Oudenbosch is a small city in Noord Braabant, one of Netherland’s regions, that developed around a group of catholic educational institutes. The studio was focused on the reuse of heritage buildings. The goal of the project was to transform the city center from a segregated space into a lively compact area. After a thorough analysis, I decided to give the centre the initial educational function and transform it into a campus. I worked both on the public space and the reconversion of the buildings. For the design faze, I chose to a former cloister, that I transformed into a public library.

Row housing is a typology that hasn’t spread in Romania after the 1940s. An answer to this type of building can be modular housing. The houses can exist only as a group, as they function as a puzzle of hollow (courtyards) and solid (functions). Inspired by the oriental modular housing, I created a connection between the outdoor and indoor conditions and proposed a sequence of exterior and interior spaces. The “house” is generically the space in which an individual feels comfortable and gives him the feeling of safety. It can be an outdoor limited space or an indoor enclosed space. It is dimension-less and has no scale. It can be a nest, a cave, a chair, a room, a forest, a city, the universe.

Wooden pavillion school assignment Bucharest, 2009 coordinator: arh. Andrei Fezi

The assignment asked for a structural solution regarding a covered space. The purpose of this exercise was experimenting with wooden structures and designing a reading pavilion. The most important part of this project is creating a relationship between structure, material and interior atmosphere. A ‘forest’ of pillars is covered with a translucent ‘fan’. Although designed as an open space, the density of the structure creates an enclosed environment. While entering the pavilion the user can experience two sensations: first, a state of privacy and a forest-related comfort feeling, and then openness with clear exposure to the outside that permits both watching the landscape and being seen from the outside. The plans, sections, facade and axonometric views are hand-drawn in ink.

“Ion Mincu University of Architecture benefits from several outdoor spaces, but due to the renewal process the university was going through, these courtyards had been severely altered. Therefore, the aim of the project was to rehabilitate and turn them into public spaces once again. My team (myself together with Ramona Enache) proposed a series of interventions, re-using materials that the institution had thrown away such as wooden panels, metal frames, old doors and window frames, cardboard etc. Together we organized a workshop and invited all students to design their own type of furniture. Our initiative generated further actions and now, few years later, the courtyards have considerably improved.

2009: working with wood “the inhabitated sculpture
Working in wood meant discovering the untainted novelty of the very old things and cleaning the mind by giving up the temptations of reinforced concrete. In the first Bunesti house the tectonic positioning of the beams and the cutting in the form of a swallow tail brought about the whole exterior aspect, conferred unifying simplicity to the object and made it look more like a wood sculpture in the form of a house, a sort of dwelling-like sculpture.
112
113
2010: working with adobe “the inside-out house”
Continuing the idea of inclusion and separation, the constructive solution was a house of adobe inside a house of wood. The adobe wall is layed on continous foundations and has the shape of two concentric circles, reinforced by the radii that limit the students’ rooms. Under the wood exoskeleton, freed from any loadbearing purpose, the adobe wall is left with the role of thermal insulation. The wall raises from the ground without any interuptions, horizontal underlay or capillarity breaking layers. This was a risky choice that deviates from the usual structure of the modern walls, referring to vernacular adobe buildings and integrating the more recent ecoarchitecture principles. The fact that the wood construction never touches the adobe masonry is just an expression of the different static behaviour of the two materials and constructive systems, thus expressing the principles of the free plan.

2011/12: working with bricks “the chamber-table ” This building is made out of stone and brick with lime mortar: the same for the walls, the floor, the table. It is covered by a brick vault, built without any support, each arch leaning on the previous one. The bricks were made at a local mason, and the stones were brought up from the Vâlsan River.

Concrete Design Workshop Eindhoven, 2013 team project theme: Mies-interpretation - Detailing one of Mies’ unbuilt masterworks: the Concrete Office Building coordinator: ir. Jan Schevers
118
119
The 6th Concrete Design Competition was launched in the Netherlands with a 4-day hands-on workshop for students. In collaboration with Eindhoven University of Technology - Architectural Design and Engineering the program was set to interpret an unbuilt work of Mies van der Rohe: The Concrete Office, producing scaled concrete facade elements. Concrete comes in many shapes and textures, as well as coal and pencil drawings differ one from another depending on the technic of the artist. What inspired us was the rough texture of the original sketch of Mies van der Rohe. Imagining that the concrete was different than what Mies usually used in his buildings, we invested the non-load bearing wall with the visual properties that the non-structural elements generally have in Mies’s projects.
