“A good diamond is a possession to be prized for generations.” – Mr. Harry Winston
THE WINSTON STORY
Throughout his lifetime, Mr. Winston believed that behind every great diamond was a fascinating story. That diamonds, like people, were most precious for their individuality. And that our most meaningful moments should be marked with jewels so exquisite and rare that they would forever serve as glittering reminders of our most cherished memories. One of Mr. Winston’s greatest gifts was to impart his fascination with the beauty, the romance, the majesty and the mystique of great gemstones to a clientele that ranged from heads of state to Hollywood stars. Harry Winston’s renowned collection of rare jewels has been compared with those amassed by royal houses and governments alike. Since 1932, some of Harry Winston’s most extraordinary diamonds have played a prominent role in commemorating some of the greatest romances of our time, from expressions of love—such as the flawless pear-shaped stone presented to Elizabeth Taylor by Richard Burton; to symbols of commitment—like the legendary Lesotho III diamond engagement ring given to Jacqueline Kennedy by Aristotle Onassis; to one-of-a-kind jewels, for once in a life time celebrations. Instilled in every Harry Winston diamond is an incredible sense of pride, grounded in decades of experience and tradition. When you purchase a Harry Winston engagement ring, our legacy becomes yours.

HARRY WINSTON ENGAGEMENT RINGS
The design of each Harry Winston engagement ring begins with the diamond. Inspired by the unique beauty of every stone, Harry Winston designers and master craftsmen fashion a setting that will reveal each individual diamond’s heart and soul in a way that is at once contemporary, classic, and impeccably elegant. Constructed from platinum, our settings tightly secure the stones using the minimal amount of metal in order to maximize the fire, brilliance and scintillation of each diamond. At Harry Winston, we design our mountings proportionate to the stones, assuring a flawless fit. Our iconic split-prongs, a signature Harry Winston design motif, are meticulously sculpted and polished to blend seamlessly into the ring’s design and ensure the safety of each stone in its setting.

Harry Winston polishes all platinum surfaces of its engagement rings, including the under-bezel and ajours, to a dazzling mirror-like finish. Much consideration is given to the inside and the outside of each ring. At Harry Winston, what is unseen is as important as what is seen when it comes to our exceptionally crafted jewelry. Our specialists rigorously examine each ring to ensure that it sits correctly and comfortably on the wearer’s hand. Each ring is then engraved with the HW hallmark, as well as a description of the metal fineness. No detail is overlooked. A Harry Winston engagement ring is held to the highest and most exacting quality standards in the industry. Throughout every step of the process, we inspect each ring, beginning with the initial design and continuing to the moment before it is placed in our salon’s case. Our quality assurance professionals painstakingly pore over each ring, ensuring that it has been flawlessly crafted.

THE FIFTH C: DIAMONDS OF IMPECCABLE CHARACTER
Every Harry Winston engagement ring begins with a diamond chosen for its exceptional character and superlative quality. Each stone has been cut and polished to release all its brilliance and distinctive beauty. “No two diamonds are alike,” Harry Winston once explained. “Each diamond has a different nature. Each diamond must be handled the way you handle a person.” Our discriminating connoisseurship of gemstones has not changed, and every engagement ring we create is one of a kind.

DESIGN
A Harry Winston diamond engagement ring starts with the diamond, as each ring is designed to showcase a particularly beautiful and unique stone to its best advantage. When side stones are used in our designs, careful consideration and thorough planning go into their selection—which is made by assessing their quality, similarity to each other, and ability to aesthetically complement and enhance the center stone. The result is a ring with the impeccable balance, grace and harmony synonymous with the Harry Winston tradition.

CARAT WEIGHT, COLOR, CLARITY & CUT
When purchasing a diamond, you will hear mention of the “Four Cs.” These criteria for evaluating stones—carat weight, cut, color, and clarity—offer a useful starting point. However, diamonds that seem similar when judged by these criteria alone can vary greatly in beauty. Harry Winston selects diamonds for our engagement rings according to a more complex calculus, applying a high level of gemological expertise.
62
THE POINT IS...
THE ABCs OF “D, E AND F”
A diamond’s size is measured by weight, expressed in carats divided into points. A carat equals 100 points or 1/5 of a gram. Diamonds of higher carat weight are generally more valuable because they are found less frequently in nature. But diamonds of equal carat weight may vary greatly in value because they differ in the quality of their cut, color and clarity. Therefore weight alone is a poor guide for evaluating a diamond, since it is a complex combination of factors that determines a diamond’s beauty and quality.
Though diamonds are transparent, almost all diamonds display some slight hint of color. A diamond’s color is assessed against a scale from D through Z—based on a standardized color grading system that has been internationally accepted since the 1950s. In creating engagement rings, Harry Winston selects diamonds only from the top three grades (D, E, and F). These diamonds are deemed colorless; they are the rarest and the most valuable.

WHY WEIGHT MUST BE SACRIFICED FOR BRILLIANCE
FLUORESCENCE
In gemology, fluorescence refers to the property some diamonds have of glowing when exposed to ultraviolet light. When such diamonds are observed under incandescent or natural light, they can often have a milky appearance—even when they have good clarity. Harry Winston accepts only diamonds with zero to faint fluorescence, and carries no diamonds whose appearance in daylight is compromised by this unique property.
TO BE PERFECTLY CLEAR
Almost all diamonds have slight internal and surface characteristics, most of them too small to be seen by the unaided eye. When viewed using a magnification of 10X, they can take various forms such as tiny crystals, clouds or feathers. To determine a diamond’s clarity grade, a gemologist will consider its size, location, quantity and nature. Diamonds possessing no such characteristics are categorized as Flawless (FL) or Internally Flawless (IF). In general, the greater the imperfections are in number and size, the lower the clarity grade. Harry Winston diamonds are selected from the clarity grades of Flawless through VS2, where no inclusions are visible to the naked eye.
The beauty of a diamond’s sparkle is the result of how well it has been cut. The aspects of cut that contribute most to a diamond’s beauty are proportion, symmetry and polish. Although nature determines the characteristics of a piece of diamond rough, the hands of the master cutter release its fire and brilliance. When a diamond is cut to exacting proportions—neither too deep nor too shallow—light will reflect inside the stone from one mirror-like facet to another and reappear to the eye in a flash of spectral colors. Harry Winston diamonds are cut and polished to maximize their beauty—even though such a strict standard requires sacrificing much more of a rough diamond’s weight.

SYMMETRY
Everywhere in nature, symmetry is a key to beauty. Nowhere is this more true than in a diamond cut to exacting standards. The geometry of the table, girdle, crown, and pavilion facets is what dictates the diamond’s brilliance and beauty, ensuring that it will catch the eye from every angle. Harry Winston believes that recognizing beauty in a diamond is an art as much as a science, and our expert gemologists carefully evaluate the nature of every stone.
POLISH
The surface of a diamond is the threshold through which light enters the stone. Even relatively minor surface abrasions can interfere with the stone’s ability to properly interact with light. It is a trademark of Harry Winston excellence that every stone is polished to a perfect finish. The polish of our diamonds is evaluated both before and after they are placed in their final settings.
69
GIA CERTIFICATE
Every Harry Winston diamond engagement ring is accompanied by a certificate from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), that details its high quality in each of the 4C categories and assigns it a unique identification number. The GIA is a non-profit institution, and operates independently of the diamond trade. A GIA certificate is the most internationally recognized and accepted grading documentation in the industry.
70
PLATINUM
Through the use of platinum, Harry Winston pioneered the idea and the technology to minimize the appearance of metal in jewelry so that diamonds appear to float on the skin. The most durable of precious metals, its light color is the perfect, nearly invisible, complement to the burst of light created by our diamonds. Platinum is the perfect showcase to maximize the fire, brilliance and scintillation of a diamond.

ETHICAL DIAMOND SOURCING
Harry Winston is committed to ensuring that all aspects of its business—including the sale of rough diamonds, the purchase of polished diamonds and other gemstones, and the purchase of precious metals—reflect the highest standards of conduct. Harry Winston purchases from suppliers who adhere to industry standards on ethical, environmental and social practices throughout the diamond jewelry supply chain.

Supporting local communities and giving hope to those in need is a longstanding House tradition that began with our founder, Mr. Harry Winston. From 1949-1953, Mr. Winston organized an exhibition known as “The Court of Jewels”—a magnificent traveling collection featuring his most impressive and historic gems—which toured key cities across America raising money for local charitable causes. Today, we continue this legacy of giving through The Harry Winston Brilliant Futures™ Charitable Program. Within this program, the company is proud to support organizations in our local salon communities that strive to give young people access to a quality education and the skills necessary to be successful in life, provide access to cultural and artistic enrichment, and enable healthy futures. ©2015 Harry Winston, Inc.
