A design for the Italian pavilion in the Dubai 2020 Exhibition. The concept for the pavilion originated from a two-dimensional sketch about urban grids in ancient cities. These shapes in plan, if extruded, create a “district“ of freestanding buildings that form different urban blocks. This recreated a very Italian feeling, of being in a town with very narrow street and tall buildings, in a way, that one is almost completely surrounded by the built environment.

Reflecting on a communal type of living in a traditional context, the project’s volumes result from a close analysis of Salemi’s urban fabric and orientation. Elements such as entrances raised from the ground, covered entryways and vertical windows are some of the elements that form the architectural language of the complex.

the perpetual human progress

The idea that men could build their way into godliness through their own devices is what had motivated the tragically unsuccessful erection of the tower of Babel. The Naos envisions a structure designated for the culmination of civilization: when people live in harmony and unity and have a loyal relationship with the planet. In the wake of current environmental and societal issues, we have created a structure that will house evidences of global human development throughout history. Situated in the symbolical valley between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, the Naos tower is meant to never be completed, endlessly under construction, with newer generations adding more to it. And thus, it will continue to represent the unity of people in the pursuit of a common goal. Among the functions that the tower will accommodate are cultural, linguistic, religious institutions, a vast archive and server farm, science departments, etc. The tower is designed as a self-sustaining system, inserted in the natural landscape of Mesopotamia and built with the latest sustainability technologies. Carbon concrete structure is the “skeleton” that will be the foundation for the primary element of the project – the module. Modules are inserted as generations pass by, perpetually updating and developing the structure, always with the environment in mind. The portion of the building integrated in the landscape will take advantage of the thermal regulation of the earth, while solar and wind systems will generate electricity. Sustainable practices such as daylighting, rainwater collection and reuse of gray water are implemented throughout the project. The excavated local material as well as recycled materials are the main construction units. While the Naos prototype is planned for modern-day Iraq, it will be the beginning of an ambitious goal to dramatically reimagine the building industry; the Naos is a model that could be easily adapted to different scales, functions, locations, all while maintaining it’s zero-waste philosophy.
