v-house Type: school project, architectural study Location: – Functions: single family house Size: 170 m2 Coaching: Ing.arch. Jakub Kynčl, Ph.D.

Form of the V-House follows the shape of surrounding terrain. One simple block (the living space) is cut into two parts – “the sleeves”. Private zone of the house is located in the upper floor. There are all bedrooms orientated to the south. “The bottom sleeve” contains an entry, a storage and technical areas (accessories of the house). Sleeves are connected with big living space (50m2) at middle level, which is the heart of the house life. The house acts like a sculpture – inconspicuous, modern and functional.

new pavilion for the SNU museum Type: architectural study, competition 2008, 1st prize Location: Banska Bystrica, Slovakia Functions: historical museum Size: 4000 m2 Team: Roman Turcan, Danica Turcanova, Andrej Turcan

Our intention was to design museum of the 21st century, which interests people of all ages. The museum, which is not based only on the history and glory of the exhibits from the World War II, but also on the effects (audio and video), 3D models and period authenticity. Our motto was: “No significant mass, just experience... The main requirement was to protect the original open-air museum (located in the park) from the weather and vandalism and hide it under the ground. We designed a huge gallery space, where everything happens. Visitors move over the system of ramps, which pass through the exposition. They cross the interior and exterior, small and high spaces. The roof is made of concrete shell. There we keep the current city park. The special triangular skylights became its new elements, which illuminate the main exibition space.

wooden passive house Type: architectural study & construction plans of the energy passive house Location: – Functions: single family house Size: 200 m2 Technical coaching: doc.Ing. Josef Chybík, CSc.

http://www.treehugger.com/passivhaus-principles.jpg

Architectural study of this house uses both design and technological principles for passive energy standard. Compact form of the house minimizes possible heat losses. There are only two parts running out of main body which make interior space more interesting. Wood was choosen as the main construction material. It allows to use entire thickness of wall for insulation and minimizes thickness of construction. It is also the most ecological material for building. The house is open to the south. Large windows of living spaces make high passive solar gains. Technical rooms are orientated to the north, because they need no sunlight. There is controlled air exchange used in the house. Fresh air sucks through ground natural exchanger, (2,5 meter under ground). More then 80% of heat is reused via heat recovery unit. Photovoltaic cells are used to warm the rooms up to desire temperature. For water heating there serve sollar panels. House is very good isolated. Achieved U-values of the construction are between 0,09 and 0,12 W/m2.K.

chapel Type: architectural study Location: Brezno, Slovakia Functions: chapel of the Catholic Church Size: 60 m2 Team: Roman Turcan, Danica Turcanova, Andrej Turcan

Catholic parish in Brezno had an idea to create a place for worship, mutual encounter and education of Roma minority. Therefore, simple and low cost construction was required, which could be built by themselves. We use the natural character of the place – the stone wall supporting the slope. It creates one of the chapel walls and its texture, which could be seen inside. The right concrete wall is in the shape of a sleek line. Southern sun flows directly to the altar through the carved cross. We can say these two walls represent the contrast between life on Earth (rough stone wall) and purity of Heaven (white concrete).

central building of the BFH university Type: school project, architectural study Location: Bern, Switzerland Functions: administrative and educational Size: 15 000 m2 Team: Désirée Hager (management), Andrej Turcan (design) Coaching: Jörg Grütter, Erich Deschwanden, Peter Schürch, Glaus Stephan

The proposal presents the central building as the center of the BFH University Campus. Here are integrated important parts of university: central library, auditoriums with capacity of 600 seats, management of BFH and canteen. These dominant functions are grouped into four “wings” (there is possibility to connect and disconnect functions) and they are interconnected by central foyer. It is used as a place of meetings and events in the building. Exchanging information was the most important factor of the building’s concept. My aim was to design enough attractive places to encourage discussion and exchange of information between students and teachers. The foyer could be used for all of these functions. The building is conceived to be open to the south, where the university park is situated. Form of the building should evoke the Alps and glaciers, which are characteristic for the region of Berner Oberland. Therefore, the shape and color of the building consists of four white blocks, irregularly embedded into each other just like mountain glaciers. The design shows the corporate identity of BFH, as a timeless, progressive and sustainable educational institution.

student housing - cejl Type: school project, strategy planning and architectural study Location: Brno, Czech Republic Functions: student housing and commercial facilities Size: 2800 m2 Coaching: Ing.arch. David Mikulášek

Youth complex is located in the heart of the problematic area in the Bratislavska street, with high level of social poor population and high criminality. This district is unpopular for the citizens and it is becoming a social ghetto. Our task was to make some city interventions to make this place viable and more attractive for living. Student characters creates a connection between poor people of this district and so-called middle class. They should be a starting group to create mixture of people and make the place more liveable. I use two neighbouring plots for my project. The green one for relax zone and public space and the other one for student housing. That is the idea of “1 + 1 = 3”. The housing is a combination of positive attributes of student dormitory (economic room space, the concentration of fellow students, student services) and living in an apartment (privacy, comfort). Structural concrete system divides each floor into two zones: private and social. Student rooms are facing south and common area north (kitchen, studio and living room). These areas are connected to each other; on one hand the unused communication space fades, and on the other hand it creates a fully active and usable space.

student center - porici Type: bachelor thesis, architectural study Location: Brno, Czech republic Functions: student housing & facilities Size: 9700 m2 Coaching: Ing.arch. Pavel Jura Technical consultation: doc.Ing. Miloslav Meixner, Ing. Monika Petříčková, Ing. Petr Suchánek

The tasked space program for project of student center was very difficult. The main part should be for living (min. 200 beds) and for food facilities. On this small plot there was no more space for the other activities. Therefore, the proposal had to be very economic, but on the other hand also attractive for students. The main aim of the project was mutual communication and activity between its users – students. That is why the diagonal stairway hall became the dominant conceptual element of the dormitory. It connects all public spaces of each floor and creates the main communication element of the building. There are concentrated all student activities and they are showed to the street through the glass facade. The hall begins at the entrance foyer and passes each platform cascading to the top. This concept expresses the sentence: “The path is the goal.” This means that it is not important what happens at the end, but what you experience on the journey. In the second block of the building, there are sports facilities. It is conceived as a light transparent pavilion. Just as the stair hall, it is the place of numerous activities. It is open with largescale exterior glazing, which offers an interesting evening performance. The roof of this block is used as a lounge terrace for student grill parties, with the fantastic view of city panorama. Although the building of student center is small, it offers many opportunities in different spaces for activities and carefree student life. 44

re:present bb - waterfront of the river hron Type: architectural study Location: Banska Bystrica, Slovakia Functions: waterfront, river parade, leasure and sport facilities Size: 13 500 m2 Team: Roman Turcan, Danica Turcanova, Andrej Turcan

River Hron, which flows through the city center, is “lost”. It is difficult to see, closed to all funcions, with no use. Therefore, we have created this city intervention as an impulse for the city council and citizens. We have designed a new waterfront - new sport, culture and leisure center of the city. Our intention was to bring atractivity and activity to this place, using the advantages of the river as a strong urban element, and also support travelling in region. A “culture island” and an amphitheatre dominates in this area, which are used for open air concerts and performances. Around these two, there is located a small dock for tourist boats. Sport and food facilities are situated over the river passage.

masterplan for BFH university campus Type: school project, urban and strategy planning Location: Bern, Switzerland Size: 100 000 m2 Team: Désirée Hager, Niklaus Yang, Tatjana Stehli, Andrej Turcan Coaching: Jörg Grütter, Erich Deschwanden, Peter Schürch, Glaus Stephan

Weyermannshaus Ost – an old industry area, needs new usage. After many years, it becomes a part of city residental area. What kind of new function can appear here? Living, work, education...? After the study of regional situation and problems, we have decided to create a new university campus. Berner Fachhochschule (BFH), the biggest university of canton Bern, wants to group faculties to one place and strengthen their cooperation and concurention on the market. A university park becomes central element of the campus, because it spreads between the faculties. Pavilion form of faculties enables variable usage of the interiors and public spaces all around. In the whole campus, traffic is eliminated and only bikes and pedestrians are supported. Design shows the corporate identity of BFH as a timeless, progressive and sustainable educational institution.

FREEFORM parkbench Type: A*lab design project Functions: sitting & playing Size: 3 m2 Coaching: Jacques W端thrich

The idea of this project is based on the cooperation of modern 3D modeling programs and CNC machines. It means that currently designer is able to create the desired product easily with using the IT technologies. The task was to create an interesting and simple object for sitting, which is economic. After the study of various supporting systems and folding structures, I have designed this Freeform park bench based on the zig-zag principle. Its volume increases by means of stretching, which also saves material and creates an interesting form for sitting, leisure and relax. For this design I have written special Grasshopper script. This can be applied on the desired form to create zig-zag principle. Then this 3D form can be unfold into a 2D plan and sent to the CNC cutting machine. The final product is easily portable and could be put together in production or on the spot. Construction material (plywood strips) are connected by iron rivets (equivalent: plastic or composite bands). The product guarantees diversity of forms and attractiveness of environment.

root Type: school project, conceptual study Size: 100 m2 Funktions: gallery, music bar, culture space... Coaching: Ing.arch. Iva Poslusna, Ph.D.

Idea: unstick the surface My intention was to design an underground space, where the light dynamically creates its own atmosphere. Original shape of the skylights release light rays into the interior in the shape of triangle. As the sun is moving during the day, this shape changes and makes space more interesting. Skylights are finished with architectural concrete. The roof is designed as a green roof. I wanteed to connect architecture at the underground level with the surrounding terrain.

virtual history museum Type: WEB design Size: virtual reality Coaching: Ing.arch. Jan Kratochvil

Motto: “Experience the past with the future technology, right now!” The current web is no longer sufficient. With the advent of 3D technologies and virtual reality, there are conditions for the boom of “virtual worlds” on the internet. My intention was to bring human history to the reality. “One learns best on his own experience.” The main idea is to experience life in given historical period, to meet famous celebrities or just to experience the spirit of the past times. I have designed a virtual web site. Menu contains the ability to enter 3 main parts of the museum: 1. Hall of encyclopedic history with the spiral ramp and events, 2. Hall of celebrities and 3. Hall of conterporary events. Main ideological element of web environment is the “gate” - entrance to the space and time. The light is always used as a navigation: spiral, axis, lines, which lead visitors in the virtual space. They move just like in the real museum only with mouse handling. Virtual museum of history is a social space, where you can meet friends and join “adventures to the history.” Video link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_eRvgr1QHwU

sf interactive "social" fasade Type: constructive & design facade element Size: (depends on use) Type of use: facades of student housing, hotels, headquarters of social network companies,...

Information technologies have even greater role in our lives. Their huge development causes changes not only in global scale (“Global Village”), but also in our individual life. Personal contacts have changed to virtual. New social networks are being born and people spend more and more time online. To bring these virtual feelings and activities back to reality, I have invented new form of facade. It is about connection between the user acount and fasade. Via LED lighting, user’s feelings and activities can be shown directly on the facade. Special sofware monitoring user’s status assigns it a color, depending on his activities. This way the interactive, changeable facade works, which makes building really lively. With the standardized color palette students will be able to recognize what they do, and this way they could join their common interests and build friendships.

Traditional ceremony “Marena” is back. Students of Faculty of Architecture BUT in Brno make an invitation party for the new students. This year the topic was “Guards and Prisoners”. I have cut this short movie for the main ceremony in the music club Fleda in Brno. It was projected onto the backdrop of scene during the ceremony. It shows some associations in lives of architects and prisoners in our society. Enjoy the video :)) Video link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_IgtYHNZlo
