How to

Accessorise Like a Pro Accessories – they’re so much fun to shop for. We love browsing round Top Shop’s handbag department, or trying on the jaunty hats in Accessorize, not to mention deciding which one of the amazing jewellery pieces in Claire’s to buy. It’s no surprise how important accessories are. They can completely change an outfit, update something you haven’t worn for a long time and transform you from casual daytime cool to night time glamour – in just a few seconds! You might have some friends who just seem to “know” how to add a cute belt or a dramatic pair of earrings and look great and now you can too.

W

e often get asked how to accessorise well so we thought we’d put together a guide to accessories and what to do to make subtle updates to your wardrobe or dramatic grand statements! Even if you are going out in just your basic harem pants and a plain top – a few carefully placed accessories will change you from looking like everyone else to turning heads! Once you know what to pair with each outfit – you’ll never forget, it’s a skill for life and accessories don’t have to be expensive either. Claire’s is really well-priced and if you want to earn some extra money to buy some more, why not do some of those chores Mum always needs help with? Perhaps offer to wash the car or even to babysit? Another way of being able to afford accessories is to learn how to make jewellery – these kits are inexpensive and it’s fun to come up with something completely original. You might even find you have a talent for it – and then you could sell your own designs. Check out Hobbycraft for their kits or search online – there are plenty to choose from.

Here are some great tips on accessorising: • Remember, less is more. Don’t overpower your clothes with loads of accessories. One or even two “statement” pieces will draw the eye, you don’t need anymore. So if you’re wearing a cute little dress for an evening out or a special occasion, a pretty necklace or large earrings will be the perfect accompaniment, perhaps one cocktail ring but no more than that. • You can never own too many bags! If you have a small budget just buy a colour that goes with everything, like tan or taupe. If you can, get a small bag for evenings out and a larger bag for the daytime. If you buy leather, ask Mum to help with protecting it, you can buy leather protector from any supermarket and this helps keep it clean especially from rain marks so it should last you a long while. • Earrings – you should have one pair of large hoops, one pair of dainty studs, one pair of dangly earrings and finally some faux sparkly diamonds for special events. Of course, you can have more but let’s call these your “basics”. • Add a belt – if you can! Belts are IN! Low slung jeans belts, wide belts to cinch in your waist or skinny belts which add a little extra special touch to any outfit – especially a playsuit or jumpsuit. • Simple outfits can carry off bold accessories. So if you’re wearing jeans and a plain t-shirt, wear a jewelled belt and a long necklace, perhaps stack some colourful bangles too.

• It’s fun to mix colour as long as your clothes are plain otherwise you can look too busy. Think about mixing colourful friendship bracelets on one arm or maybe two pendants at a time and co-ordinate with a bright bag which picks out one or two of your bracelet colours. • Don’t forget your hair – cute bows, bright headbands or something simple with a little sparkle can also add some colour pop or extra glamour to your outfit. • Your shoes are also accessories. Jazz up old trainers with new bright or patterned laces and instead of plain pumps; why not experiment with some colourful or patterned flatties? They can add instant jazz to plain jeans and a top. • Swap accessories with friends – doing this instantly updates your wardrobe! • Don’t be afraid to experiment, it’s great to be individual. Don’t throw out old accessories either – they will come back into fashion at some point. Why not ask your Mum or your Grandma if they have anything in their jewellery boxes too? Vintage is very fashionable, a cameo brooch or chunky chains can look fabulous – and everyone will want to know where you got them from whereas you’ll know you have something completely unique! You’re now the Accessory Queen.

How to

How to Have Healthy Hair When you’re a teenager as you know, your body goes through a number of hormonal changes. This can mean excess oil (not just on your face but on your scalp too) which leads to greasy hair. Other problems could be dandruff (flaky scalp) or you could suffer from dry hair which is prone to split ends. Some people have what is known as “normal” hair which is neither dry nor greasy and doesn’t suffer any problems but it’s rare for teenagers to escape any hair issues, luckily they can be controlled and normally even out as you get older!

SPECIAL EDITION | 2015

Dandruff

Dandruff is nothing to be worried about, it’s just dead skin cells which appear on the scalp and flake into the hair. What happens is new skin cells push the old ones to the top of your scalp and that’s when they flake off. It can be itchy but it can be controlled by using a good quality anti-dandruff shampoo. It in no way means your hair is dirty and if anything, over-washing can cause excess drying of the scalp. The best way to fight dandruff is to use a shampoo such as Head & Shoulders, The Body Shop Ginger anti-dandruff shampoo or try Neutrogena T-Gel. If you don’t see an improvement in a couple of weeks it might be worth asking your Mum to book you a GP appointment as there are medicated shampoos that can help. When using anti-dandruff shampoos don’t forget to really condition your hair because this fights the dryness on the scalp as well as keeping hair soft and shiny. If you’re prone to greasy hair too, use a gentle conditioner and be sparing at the root. If you’re not keen on the smell of the anti-dandruff shampoos then use your regular shampoo with the second wash, before conditioning – this should get rid of any bad odours. Finally, once a week try a hot oil scalp treatment after washing. This will help regulate the oil production and you’ll be so pleased with how smooth your hair feels afterwards.

Dry Hair and Split Ends

On the other end of the scale, plenty of teenagers suffer with dry hair which often leads to split ends and a feeling of brittleness. This, like other hair conditions, can be managed by using a good quality shampoo designed for dry hair and a great conditioner. You should also go to the hairdresser every 6 to 8 weeks and have a trim. This will keep the ends neat and healthy. It will also stop hair splitting and breaking. If you’re trying to grow your hair the thought of a “trim” might worry you but don’t worry – actually, regular trims will result in healthy hair that grows faster and looks more luscious! Hair can become dry and damaged from swimming (chlorine is very drying), being in the sun and using straighteners or tongs too much. Those with curly hair are often prone to dryness but by being careful when you dry your hair you can help to soften your locks. Be careful when you wash your hair; be gentle as hair can be damaged

Oily Hair

If you suffer with greasy hair you are not alone! Most teenagers go through a phase where hair can look lank and greasy even if you only washed your hair 12 hours before! This is because of your hormonal changes. You might even wonder why your best friend’s hair never looks greasy. Well, oily hair tends to affect those with fine hair more than those with very thick hair and this is because finer hair doesn’t have as much substance to soak up the oil that is produced. It will improve eventually but in the meantime there’s plenty you can do to fight the grease. Firstly, buy a good PH balanced organic shampoo because they tend to be packed with natural ingredients rather than chemicals so are designed to reduce your scalp from producing too much oil. Wash your hair every day – lightly. Really rinse out the shampoo because leaving any left will cause your scalp to dry out which can then lead to dandruff. Don’t use conditioner if your hair is really oily because it will put back the moisture into your hair and the oil will re-appear but you can apply a little to the ends if you suffer with dryness in this area as this won’t affect your scalp. Just like your skin, hair needs water too so drink at least 1.5 litres a day, it will help reduce oil and grease and it’s so good for you, there’s no excuse! Also don’t touch your hair, try and become conscious of when you do touch it. Perhaps tie it back so you aren’t playing with it and don’t over-brush it. If you notice your hair getting greasy at the roots, dot a little talcum powder into your scalp, this soaks up the oil and will stop your hair looking greasy.

when it’s wet too. Use a good conditioning treatment once a week and wrap your hair in a towel while the treatment is working. When you do dry it off, if you can resist using a hair dryer then let it dry naturally but if you do have to use a hair dryer don’t use it on the hottest setting and never hold it close to your hair. Avoid straighteners and tongs apart from for special occasions because they are so hot, they actually burn hair into place! Dry hair should only be washed once or at the most twice a week because it won’t get as greasy as oily hair. Also perms, colour and straightening products can damage hair more if it’s already splitting. If you are thinking about getting your hair professionally coloured, curled or straightened speak to a well-known professional hairdresser and ask their opinion first. Most good hairdressers offer a hair consultation to see if your hair is suitable for these treatments. Finally, Eating well will also help to reduce dryness and oiliness. A good diet including plenty of fruit and green vegetables will make hair shiny and lustrous. By reducing your sugar and snacks will also make a difference. Why not take a multi vitamin or a vitamin E tablet? Speak to Mum first because sometimes taking extra vitamins should be checked by a GP but vitamin E is known for giving you good skin and good hair.

How to

How to

Plan the Perfect Sleepover Yay! Your Mum has agreed you can have a sleepover with your BFF’s so now it’s time to plan a night you’ll all never forget! Even if you’ve had loads of sleepovers before there’s always room for more great ideas. We’ve pulled together a list of the things you should think about to make sure your sleepover is the best you’ve ever had and the best your friends have ever been to. As a suggestion, when you’ve agreed how many friends you can have with your Mum make sure that it’s a nice even number because with odd numbers sometimes someone can feel left out and you want everyone to have as much fun as possible. The Invites

Once you’ve decided on the date and times, it’s time to create the invitations. The best start time is normally after dinner (so around 7.00pm) and pick-up the after breakfast, late morning the next day. Why not design your own invitation? You can do something yourself on your computer or print off a design that has already been created, just fill in the details. Try Evite.com or Paperlesspost.com and email all your invitations – it’s so cool and easy and saves time too.

Theme

Have you thought about a theme? You don’t have to have one but if you want some ideas here’s a few. • For those of you who still love princesses, do a Princess theme where everyone comes in a Disney Princess pyjama set and you can all make crowns and tiaras. • How about Crazy Pyjamas where all your friends come in the craziest sleep-set combinations?

8

SPECIAL EDITION | 2015

• Another suggestion could be a Talent Show and everyone has to come to your slumber party with a party piece – you could video them too! • Perhaps consider a Music Party where you come as your favourite pop star or you could all come as one of the band! Have Mum and Dad give a prize to the best dressed of course. • Another cute idea is a Backwards theme where everyone wears their nightwear backwards, so much fun – make sure everything is backwards, including the sleeping bags and the bed linen! Even have name tags with everyone’s names written…backwards! • If Mum says it’s ok you could do your own Makeover party and take it in turns to give manicures and pedicures, even experiment with make-up and hairstyles. • How about a Cookery party where you could all bake cupcakes (to have later on) with Mum’s help. You could even give everyone a chef ’s hat and apron (they can be found cheaply on Ebay).

grumpybutgorgeous.com

Goodie Bags

This is a sweet idea that you can do if you want to. Why not make your own goodie bags? Buy some white paper bags with handles and you can decorate each one yourself. Fill with a mini toothbrush, mini toothpaste, a small bag of sweets, a lip gloss and a cute hand mirror or similar (these are just suggestions) and drop in a thank you card too.

Games

As well as a theme it’s good to have a selection of game ideas so you never get bored. You might want to make a schedule of what’s going to happen when – you don’t have to stick to it but it’s good to have something planned so your night is organised. Here are some game ideas for sleepovers: Where’s the Alarm Clock? Hide an alarm clock in someone’s sleeping bag set it at a certain time to go off and when it does everyone has to find it – the winner gets a prize! Chatterbox Game Put loads of different words written on pieces of folded paper into a box or bowl. The words should be simple, for example; drink, cup, pencil, chair, TV, picture, car etc. Take it in turns to take a piece of paper out and talk about the word for 2 minutes at a time without changing the topic or hesitating for longer than 10 seconds. When their time is up it’s the next person’s turn. Limbo Dancing See who can go the lowest using a long stick or even a piece of string tied held by someone at each end. Have a Hula Contest See who can hula for the longest! A Sack Race Using pillow cases – why not have a “sack race”? Plan a Treasure Hunt Hide various items around the house (use the rooms you’re allowed in!) and give everyone a list of clues – the first person to collect everything, or the person to collect the most wins a prize! Pass the Hat Try passing a hat around a circle of friends without using your hands! Whose Voice is it? Before the party record snippets of famous voices and run a quiz for everyone to guess which they are.

A Movie

You’ll all start to get tired after the games and theme ideas so this is a good time for a movie. Have bowls of popcorn, cupcakes and maybe some fresh fruit cut up then sit down to enjoy a good movie with a cup of hot chocolate and a dollop of cream on top. Here are a few ideas for great Sleepover movies: • Disney’s Enchanted • Annie • Night at the Museum • Diary of a Wimpy Kid • Frozen • Tangled • The Bee Movie • The Book of Life • A Bug’s Life • Toy Story • Nanny McPhee • Mrs Doubtfire Oooh there’s a YAWN – now it’s surely time for bed!

Breakfast Ideas

Pancakes always go down well and are so easy to make, Mum can buy lots of fresh fruit such as strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and bananas to serve with them. Don’t forget fresh whipped cream and maple syrup – yum! Or suggest Mum makes French toast either with salt and pepper or sweet with sugar. Also totally delish is bowls of strawberry yoghurt topped with a splodge of honey and a sprinkling of raisins. For drinks how about some fruit smoothies designed to beat the tiredness!

Things to Remember

• A camera or smartphone to take photographs so you never forget your party, don’t forget the group pics either • If you’re allowed, set up an Instagram group for your sleepover and post your pics! • Give each of your friends their own space in your bedroom for them to keep their stuff, this helps everyone know where their own things are We hope you have an amazing time at your sleepover we’re sure using some of our ideas it will be a really brilliant night! Don’t forget to give mum a hand clearing up when all your friends have gone, she’ll really appreciate it.

Spring Style

Style

It’s still so cold outside and in some places of the country there’s even been snow (yes, up to 6cm!) on the ground, so while we’re all wrapping up in our winter coats, wearing thick woolly jumpers, scarves and gloves the shops are full of Spring clothes. Funny how that happens! Still, in just a few weeks Spring will be here (we hope) and the weather should take a turn for the better. We just love Spring – don’t you? The days are longer, it starts to get warmer – pretty flowers start to shoot up and everyone has a spring in their step, wonder if that’s why it’s called SPRING?!

S

o while we’re getting ready for Spring – it’s time to re-vamp our wardrobes. Firstly, why not spend an afternoon going through all your Spring clothes from last year. Try everything on (it’s fun too!) and get rid of anything that doesn’t fit anymore (bet you’ve grown since last year), either give it to your younger sister if you have one, swap with a friend or bag it up for charity. Anything that you love but needs repairing, leave in one pile and ask Mum really nicely if she can help mend any holes in seams, fix buttons, replace zips

10

SPECIAL EDITION | 2015

etc. There may be some clothes that you can recycle too, by that we mean old jeans that are too short but fit round the waist, why not cut them down to shorts? If you have a plain t shirt you could trim the sleeves and add some lace (so fashionable too). Or those plain white t shirts that are going grey, well, if they still fit you could dye them another colour! Ask Mum to buy Dylon you can get it in most supermarkets. You can also add diamante, jewels and cute patches to jeans and denim jackets and before you know it – you have a new wardrobe for Spring!

grumpybutgorgeous.com

Of course – you’ll probably want to add some newbies to your collection so here’s what’s hot for Spring 2015. • Shirtdresses….they are, as they sound, a shirt that’s long enough to be a dress. Accessorise them with a skinny belt and you could even change the buttons to something loud and fun if you want to. • Checks! Gingham, plaid, criss-crosses – whatever you want to call it, it’s in but be careful not to mix your checks as it won’t work. Wear a plain top with a checked mini-skirt or try out gingham plimsolls with plain white laces. Claire’s Accessories have plenty of fun hair accessories so you can rock the checked look with a plaid hairband if you’d rather not overdo it! • Yellow! It’s the colour of Spring 2015 so make sure your wardrobe has a couple of yellow pieces, this could be a pretty vest top, a cardigan or even yellow pumps. If you’re not a fan of yellow why not buy a skinny yellow belt or a pair of earrings so you can still be fashion forward… • Another big colour for Spring is blue mixed with white. It’s an easy one to follow, a white t-shirt with blue jeans is always in style but how about mixing a mid-blue t-shirt or top with jeans. Plain t-shirts are always cool but look for patterned styles too, perhaps with broderie or lacy panels as these are very on-trend. • Black and White (otherwise known as MONOCHROME in fashion world). This one’s easy. You’ve probably got plenty of black and white pieces already but if not, get the basics, black trousers, white shirt or t-shirt…perhaps a little black dress for a night out! Or mix the trends and get a white shirtdress with a black belt then you’re doing two fashion statements at once – GO YOU! • Culottes… (“What are they?” We hear you say!) Ask your Mum, she probably rocked a pair of these in the 1980’s! They are like a mix of a mid-length skirt with trousers….so they might look like a skirt but they’re not. Try a pair – see if they work for you. Mum might even have a pair hidden at the back of her wardrobe or at Grandma’s house… • All white now! Yes, dressing head to toe in white is a fashion statement for 2015 and can look really neat and clean but it doesn’t stay clean for long so save this for when you have a special occasion, it’s not for running round the park! • Accessorise with tie-belts. These are big news for Spring and they’re just pieces of colourful fabric that you can tie at the side, either in a knot or a big, fussy bow. • Sliders…yes, we know these were popular last year but they’re still in for 2015 so recycle last year’s pair, if they were plain you can add some gemstones or have a look at what’s in your favourite shoe shop. They’re so comfy too. • One shoulder tops and dresses. Perfect for a night out! The one-shoulder look is IN. Try it with leggings, jeans, cropped trousers and pumps or go for a sassy oneshoulder dress, great for the school disco! • MILITARY! Get with the army and buy some khaki. Military style jackets are very fashionable and work perfectly over your jeans and t shirt as well as cute little skirts. So there you have it! Why not go through your wardrobe with your BFF, swap what doesn’t fit if you’re a different size and then together, take your bin liner full of unwanted items to the charity shop? With Mum’s permission, you can then head off to your fave department store for some Spring style and retail therapy!

Prompared

Perfectly Prepared for the Prom

Everyone gets excited once the date for the Prom has been set – and as it gets closer no doubt you and your friends can talk about nothing else. Many Proms in the UK are held in June (although some do happen earlier) – we got the Prom bug from our American friends and it’s really popular nowadays for schools up and down the country to plan a Prom. We bet you can’t wait to get prepared for your amazing night but it can be a daunting task after all, there’s just SO much to think about – where do you start? With our handy guide, you don’t need to worry at all. We take you through some important steps along the way so you can be perfectly prepared for your Prom.

N

ow the date is in your diary, things you should think about when planning your prom are of course your dress. Whether or not you have a date or you’re going with your BFF’s you want to look super gorgeous – and you will. If you want to save up for the extras (such as accessories, a hair appointment, having your nails done) why not offer to do some household chores and ask to get paid? Or perhaps even some babysitting? Do this a couple of months in advance and you’ll have a purse full of money especially for your Prom. Have you started shopping for that all-important Prom dress (and you can never start too early)? Organise a day in the diary to go shopping with your friends, or go with your Mum. Whoever you do go with make sure you’re with someone who will tell you exactly how great you look in the dresses you try on and who will tell you honestly which looks the best. There are plenty of websites for Prom dresses for hire as well, which are an excellent option as you don’t have to spend a lot of money on a dress you’ll only wear once. Try havingaballdresshire.co.uk

12

SPECIAL EDITION | 2015

or girlmeetsdress.com or why not Google Prom Dresses for Hire – most of these websites even dry clean your dress after wear – it couldn’t be easier! Once you’ve found the Prom dress of your dreams and it’s hanging in your wardrobe don’t forget those all-important accessories, we’re talking about the diamante sandals to match and the little touches that make you look like the beauty you are, such as earrings, a dainty necklace, a little clutch bag…even hair accessories (just so important to get

grumpybutgorgeous.com

everything just right!). When buying shoes just because you’ve seen a really fantastic pair do make sure they’re comfortable because there’s nothing worse than blisters and not being able to dance all night! After you’ve bought them, wear them around the house if you can to get used to how they feel. Have you tried everything on together and are you really pleased with the look? No doubt you look sensational, bet you can’t wait to show off your outfit to all your friends, you’ve probably played around with your look, maybe experimented with your make-up and hair – but is it absolutely PERFECT? You could get your best friends round to have a look or if you ‘d rather keep it a surprise then let Mum help with making sure everything looks just right. It might be wise to ask what others are wearing, you wouldn’t want your bestie wearing exactly the same as you (and you both love the same things – right?) Experiment with hairstyles too – if your dress has a halter neck then show off the neckline by having an up-do, if it’s off the shoulders then wearing it long and loose or half up will look super. Maybe Mum will let you take a trip to the hairdresser on the special day – in which case you might want a trial run to make sure the hairdresser gets your hair absolutely perfect. If you are going to the hairdressers then ask if they do a special Prom package. If not, ask Mum to help you experiment with rollers and tongs (be careful though, too much heat can damage your hair).

On the week of the Prom, you might want to indulge in a special treatment for your hair too so it is extra soft and shiny. Maybe have a light face mask using gentle products so your skin is glowing and get a good eight or nine hours sleep every night so you really feel and look your best. If you’re allowed to, have a manicure and choose a colour that complements your dress. It’s really good fun to get your girlfriends together the day before if you can and give each other a manicure and pedicure too! Experiment with make-up. Don’t try something new before knowing if it suits you. Too much make up can sometimes make you look unrecognisable so stick with what you know and perhaps buy a new lipstick or something sparkly to update your make-up bag. Many make-up counters in department stores can help you with what will look great, if you describe your dress (perhaps take a photo with your smartphone to show them) and how you want to look, they will have some suggestions. Then you can spend some of your babysitting or chore money! If there’s a group of you going together you might be able (with permission) to book a limo to take you to and from the Prom – that way you can really arrive in style. On the night, make sure you eat and drink something before you leave your house – it may sound silly but it’s important so you don’t get light headed when you’re doing all that dancing and you might forget to eat during the evening…. If you’re going with a date that’s great but if not – you’ll have a ball with your best friends but one thing to remember is photographs! Get someone (Mum or Dad) to take pictures of you on your own, with your date (if you’re going with someone) or with your friends. You’ll want to capture the Prom night forever. Your Prom should be a night you talk about for years to come – enjoy the run-up to the big date and above all make the most of every second because you should feel like a movie star!

Big Party

The Zit Battle! OMG! You’ve got a big party tomorrow night and all you can see when you look in the mirror is the beginning of a zit appearing on your chin…. what are you going to do? Well firstly, don’t panic! Remember, you are not alone. Teenage spots can affect anyone from as young as 9 years old up to and into adulthood (in fact 8 out of 10 pre-teens and teens suffer with spots). We don’t mean to sound depressing, it’s a fact of life but the good news is, it can be prevented as much as possible and those pesky spots can also be covered up with a little bit of make-up.

Why do you get spots?

Well – it’s normal to get spots, whether you suffer with the occasional pimple or if you think you have lots blackheads, white heads and those that appear under the skin – it is mainly down to your hormones changing. We bet it’s not as bad as you think! As you approach teenage years your body produces more oil especially your face, back and even your neck which is why these areas are particularly affected. Your pores get

14

clogged up with this extra oil which then leads to spots. So it’s important to know that it won’t affect you forever and there are things you can do to help keep your skin zit-free. Of course, there are occasions when some teenagers suffer quite badly with acne and this is when it may be a good idea to get your Mum to book an appointment with the doctor and get a prescription lotion or medicine to help clear it up, only in really bad cases though.

grumpybutgorgeous.com

How to care for your skin

There are plenty of excellent creams and face washes you can buy from a pharmacy to help keep spots away but some of them can be extra-drying for skin so before you turn to Clearasil try our tips for a clear skin: • Wash your face using a gentle cleanser. Try the Body Shop as they have an excellent range of gentle cleansers such as Vitamin E and Aloe, or Dermalogica Clear Start which is aimed at teenagers. Clinique have a special facial soap (Anti-Blemish Solutions) which has been created for spot prone young skins. If you do have a skin that gets spots regularly then a Tea Tree based cleanser helps to unclog pores. • If you are prone to spots then after cleansing, apply a topical spot treatment such as Neutrogena’s Visibly Clear range and if you feel you need something stronger then use a Clearasil or Witch Doctor treatment available from a pharmacy such as Boots, you can also buy neat Witch Hazel and using a cotton bud dab a tiny amount on each spot twice a day. If you have a prescription such as salicylic acid, apply it gently after cleansing. • Always clean your face from make-up – otherwise old make-up just collects bacteria which clogs pores and causes spots. • Use a very mild moisturiser. Especially if you are using acne medication as this can dry out your skin. Don’t worry, a gentle moisturiser such as Simple or the Body Shop Vitamin E will not give you spots but make sure it isn’t too thick and creamy and you only need a small amount once a day.

To pop or not to pop that is the question

Honestly? Try not to pop a spot – it could lead to scarring and you will wish you never started squeezing! If you absolutely have to squeeze a spot wash your hands thoroughly and clean your face. Use tissues wrapped round your fingers and ever so gently squeeze. If there is no movement in the spot – STOP! Never force it, your spot will get bigger, more uncomfortable and look worse. You would be better off covering it up….

How to hide a spot

We bet all your friends hide their spots so you won’t be the first! On a clean face, dap the tiniest amount of concealer (we like Rimmel or you can use a medicated stick such as Boots Tea Tree & Witch Hazel which helps to reduce the spot too) onto your spot. You can also dust a small amount of powder over the top to “set” it in place.

Other Zit Tips

Above all – don’t worry, it is completely normal to get spots. You can also keep your pillowcase clean and ask Mum to wash it every other day too and change your flannels and towels regularly. Eat sensibly too. Greasy foods can lead to a more oily skin so lay off the chips! Eat green vegetables like broccoli, spinach and cabbage and have plenty of fruit. One other fantastic tip is to drink lots of water because it cleanses your body from the inside. Aim for at least 1 litre a day. Finally – go to the party or any other special occasion you have and forget about your spot! We bet that cute guy you like also gets spots – it doesn’t put you off him does it?

Celebrity Crushes

ow there are a lot of handsome guys out in the world of the A-list, not to mention the fantastic boy bands that we adore listening to. Every time there’s a movie release you rush out to be one of the first in line to see your Hollywood idol in action, and if One Direction release a new single – the web crashes because we’re all busy trying to download it! It set us wondering who are the most gorgeous so we’ve enjoyed scouring the web to come up with our list of the hottest celebrity crushes! In no particular order (it’s just too hard to choose!), here’s our ten most wanted!

Zac Efron

We bet this comes as no surprise – this handsome young man from California has sparkly blue eyes and a mop of thick dark hair! He started getting noticed by his fans in High School Musical (have you seen all of them?) and has since starred in a number of Hollywood Box Office smash movies. Age fact: He’s 27 and he celebrates his birthday on 18th October. Other facts about Zac include him working really hard at school

SPECIAL EDITION | 2015

although he spent a lot of his time making his classmates laugh too! He’s got a movie coming out later on this year called We are Your Friends. Before you get all dreamy-eyed, we should let you know that he’s got a girlfriend though, Sami Miro (lucky lady) but we can still dream!

Robert Pattinson

2

We couldn’t possibly list Top Ten Celebrity Crushes without including the gorgeous Robert Pattinson (AKA Edward Cullen) star of the Twilight series. British born Robert grew up in South London and played many acting roles from childhood, becoming an actor at the Barnes Theatre Company. Seven years ago Robert was offered one of the starring roles in the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer and became famous for playing Edward Cullen. He’s even produced his own film, Remember Me in 2010 and he’s a musician too so he’s handsome and multi-talented! Robert’s birthday is in May when he’ll be 29 and we’ve just heard a rumour that he’s got engaged to Twilight

co-star Kristin Stewart – but that could be Hollywood gossip (here’s hoping!)

Harry Styles

Resident bad boy of One Direction – it’s no wonder Harry Styles is so popular with the girls! He’s cute, cheeky and has a mop of thick curly dark hair. His big grin makes us melt! As if you didn’t already know, Harry was first noticed on the X-Factor in 2010 when he auditioned as a solo artist but he was brought back into the competition and mixed with four other contestants to form the now world-famous One Direction. He’s a true Brit too and was born in Redditch in 1994 which makes him almost 21. The band has now released four albums and here’s a fact you might not know, the band’s first single, What Makes You Beautiful has sold over 5 million copies worldwide – have you got yours? Harry has had plenty of girlfriends – among them he dated Taylor Swift but rumours are that he’s single at the moment…we think there’s quite a queue though!

Ryan Reynolds

4

Canadian born Ryan Reynolds has been acting for many years. Born in October, 1976 he’s probably the oldest on our list. Even though he’s from Canada he has an Irish background (you can tell by his twinkling eyes) and he is the youngest of four brothers. He’s starred in many movies and has acted in a number of TV series and in April 2011 was voted one of PEOPLE’S Most Beautiful (it’s not surprising really) with his classic good looks and winning smile we completely agree. He’s due to star in The Croods in 2017 and there are 5 (yes 5!) movies all waiting to be released over the next year starring the delectable Ryan.

5

Dayo Okeniyi

7

Nigerian born Dayo has recently become hot Hollywood property! He is now world renowned for playing Thresh in The Hunger Games and only moved to the USA in 2003. Not only is he a pretty face – he’s intelligent too with a degree in visual communications. He’s 26 years old and before finding fame in The Hunger Games he acted in two short films. Now, he’s in demand with his recent movie Endless Love being another success and his soon to be released Terminator Genisys movie is due out this year – we’ll be certain to see that one. With dark, brooding good looks and a strong, muscly body he’s definitely made our shortlist!

Taylor Lautner

9

Justin Bieber

Our list wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the fabulously cute Justin Bieber. Can you believe he’s already 20? It feels like we’ve all known him forever! His first album released in 2009 went platinum worldwide – since then all of his music has been headline news and he has a number of best-selling albums, music awards and tours. He’s performed on the X-Factor in the UK and in the USA and he’s even had a voice-only role on the Simpson’s. We don’t know for sure if Justin has a girlfriend but there is a rumour he might have – still, it’s not confirmed so perhaps there’s hope!

Olly Murs

Don’t you just love Olly Murs? Clean cut, charming, handsome and with a cheeky smile he has to be on your list because he’s definitely one of our favourites! As if you didn’t know, he first found fame on the X-Factor in 2009, he didn’t win, he came second but despite not winning he’s become world famous! Olly was 30 last year and in the past 5 years he’s released 4 albums including his latest, Never Been Better. He’s sold over 10 million records around the world. We’re proud he’s British and he’s actually from Essex. Here are a couple of lesser known facts about Olly, he’s modelled for European clothing store New Yorker and for Robbie Williams’ menswear label, Farrell. It’s not surprising really; he’s just so good looking! We have to report that Olly has a serious girlfriend; model Francesca Thomas (BIG sigh…).

6

8

It’s another Twilight entrant – Taylor played the lovesick werewolf Jacob Black in Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight Series and was Edward Cullen’s rival (Robert Pattinson) for Bella Swan’s affections (that’s one lucky girl!) It’s hard for us to choose between the two, with Jacob Black’s brooding good looks and muscly physique – so we would find it a tough call too Bella! American born Taylor is also a martial arts master (not surprising considering his muscles!) and is 22 years old. He’s from Michigan in the US and started acting in 2001 with a number of TV series roles under his belt. We are told he has a girlfriend, actress Marie Avgeropoulos who stars in cult TV series 100. Never mind there’s always another celebrity crush…

Riker Lynch

We thought we were low on fair haired Celebrity Crushes so we had to include the divine looking Riker Lynch with his square jaw and floppy, blond hair. It’s no surprise that another Glee star is on this list – they’re all hot! In Glee, Riker played Jeff and made his debut in season 2. Interesting fact: Riker also has a band called R5 with his siblings and plays the bass, his two brothers are called Ross, Rocky and his sister is called Rydel (are you beginning to see a pattern?) Riker is from Littleton in Colorado, America and is 23 years old (his birthday is in November which makes him a Scorpio). Since Glee he’s played in a few movies, most recently City of Jerks. We think he’s single…!

David Henrie

Our final entrant in our top list is David Henrie who comes from sunny surfing paradise, California. He’s famous for acting in How I Met Your Mother, Wizards of Waverly Place and for being Larry in That’s So Raven. Born in 1989, he’s 25 years old, his dad is part English so you never know, we could see David in England one of these days. He’s played many Disney roles and is currently filming a movie called Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 which will hopefully be out later on this year. We aren’t sure who he is dating but he does seem to spend a lot of time with Selena Gomez – still, nothing is confirmed so fingers crossed! It was so hard to reduce our list to ten – there are so many more hot Celebrity Crushes – maybe next time we’ll have some more for you.
