Our mission is to facilitate, advocate and promote education, support and research for the prevention, treatment and cure of liver disease.
American Liver Foundation 2010 Annual Report  3
Saving Precious Lives
Fiscal Year 2012 marked another noteworthy chapter in the history of the American Liver Foundation, as we confronted a wide spectrum of liver diseases by continuing to provide much-needed education and support services, and also by vigorously improving and expanding upon them. During the fiscal year, the American Liver Foundation touched 32,519 individuals through education programs and support services. All of these nationwide efforts were driven by our mission’s central objective: The prevention, treatment and cure of more than 100 life-threatening liver diseases. In the end, it’s all about saving precious lives, isn’t it?

American Liver Foundation 2012 Annual Report 7
Education HEPATITIS C: TAKING THE DISEASE HEAD ON, IN A WIDE RANGE OF EDUCATION PLATFORMS While the American Liver Foundation’s newly-launched programs and services during FY 2012 covered many aspects of liver disease, significant efforts were focused on those individuals at risk for hepatitis C infection. Nearly 4 million people in the United States are afflicted with hepatitis C. A person can have the disease for decades without displaying symptoms. This makes the situation even more daunting. The Center for Disease Control (CDC), which describes hepatitis C as “an unrecognized health crisis in the United States,” stated in 2012 that more than 75 percent of American adults with hepatitis C are “baby boomers.” The CDC includes those born between 1945 and 1965 in this category. The CDC stresses that diagnosing hepatitis C early is key, “since the longer the virus goes undetected, the greater a person’s risk of developing serious liver disease, including liver cancer and cirrhosis. Deaths due to hepatitis C are increasing, reaching more than 15,000 in 2007.”
Hepatitis C Online Resource: With the realization that it is more critical than ever to step up hepatitis C specific awareness and understanding, the American Liver Foundation further developed the Hepatitis C Resource Program during FY 2012. A major component of this was the expansion of our online presence. In July 2012, we created and launched the “Hep C 123” program by way of a hepatitis C microsite: www.hepc.liverfoundation.org. The entire contents of the microsite are also available to visitors to our main website, www.liverfoundation.org. The microsite includes information on diagnosis, treatment and support for those living with hepatitis C. It features a dedicated Hepatitis C HelpLine, telephone support groups and a physician locator. Visitors are invited to “Enroll in Hep 123.” Those who fill out a brief online form receive, on a quarterly basis, “The 123s of Hep C,” a regular education series conveniently sent via email. In a further effort to engage visitors to the microsite, a question prominently placed on the home page asks: “Are we at risk?” It goes on to ask: “Were you born between 1945 and 1965?”
8 American Liver Foundation 2012 Annual Report
Education The site re-states the CDC’s emphasis on the importance of early diagnosis, pointing out that those born during that time period are members of “The Hepatitis C Generation.” Baby boomers are advised to heed the CDC recommendation to have a one-time screening test. In addition, they are told: “We now have new drugs that can treat and cure hepatitis C, so you should go get tested today.”
Viral Hepatitis Treatment Choices Initiative (TCI): One of our major National Education Programs during FY 2012 was the Viral Hepatitis Choices Initiative. This program specifically targets individuals who have or are at risk of hepatitis C infection. The program educates participants about the liver, hepatitis C, treatment options and management strategies. By way of the TCI program, the American Liver Foundation reached over 8,700 at-risk individuals and/ or hepatitis C patients.
Hepatitis C Brochures for Diverse Audiences:
We are pleased to report that during FY 2012, an increasing number of education materials were made available to Americans who are more comfortable receiving information in their native languages. For instance, in terms of hepatitis C education, our Hepatitis C brochure was translated into Chinese, Korean, Russian and Vietnamese. The Newly Diagnosed Hepatitis C Support Guide was updated and translated into Chinese, Russian and Spanish.
National HelpLine’s Dedicated Hepatitis C Specialist:
The American Liver Foundation’s Support Services operates a National HelpLine (1-800-GO-LIVER) that assists individuals through phone calls, emails and letters. In May 2012, the support service was enhanced by adding a dedicated specialist for hepatitis C. Over all, in FY 2012, the American Liver Foundation responded to 5,902 requests for information relating to a variety of subjects. In addition to hepatitis C specific assistance, topics included general liver disease health and wellness, treatment choices and local resources.
American Liver Foundation 2012 Annual Report 9
Education LOVE YOUR LIVER: GETTING AN EARLY START ABOUT LIVER WELLNESS To serve a younger audience in FY 2012, we reached out to middle and high school students, who were captivated by our interactive approach in teaching them about liver wellness. The program, Love Your Liver, was another one of our major National Education Programs during the financial year. Love Your Liver educates students about their liver and the action they can take to have a healthy liver and prevent liver disease. The American Liver Foundation reached nearly 18,000 students nationwide in FY 2012. Hopefully, these students will carry their newly-acquired knowledge with them throughout their lives, thereby assuring their well-being and the good health of all those with whom they come into contact. That, truly, would lend extra special meaning to our belief that you are never too young to learn about liver wellness and a healthy lifestyle. You are never too young to learn how valuable and fragile life is.
HEPATIC ENCEPHALOPATHY (HE): PAYING SERIOUS ATTENTION TO A SERIOUS DISEASE Hepatic Encephalopathy (HE) is a chronic life-threatening condition caused by a build-up of toxins to the brain. It is most often seen in people with advanced liver disease and is a major complication of cirrhosis, affecting people both mentally and physically. Among HE’s symptoms are confusion, short attention spans, forgetfulness, mood swings, anxiety and personality changes. Patients with HE can suffer from jumbled or slurred speech, shaking hands or arms, drowsiness, and even coma or death. Because of the seriousness of this liver disease, the American Liver Foundation continues to develop new resources for HE patients, their families and caregivers. In FY 2012, our Hepatic Encephalopathy brochure was updated. To reach as many populations as possible, the brochure was also translated into Chinese, Russian and Spanish.

Education THE FUTURE – EXPLORING INNOVATIVE WAYS TO CONQUER LIVER DISEASE The American Liver Foundation is always looking for new and more effective ways to accomplish its mission. A good example is Liver Matters, a national education program that was piloted in several American Liver Foundation chapters across the country at the end of FY 2012. An increase in program delivery is expected in FY 2013. Liver Matters is designed to provide health and wellness information to a wide variety of audiences, including those whose specialty is corporate wellness. The program aims to increase the awareness of the actions people can take to maximize their liver health. The vision is that Americans will take responsibility for their own lives, for the care of their livers and, ultimately, for their health in general. It is our belief that a new program like Liver Matters epitomizes the commitment of the American Liver Foundation to arrive at a time when liver disease, if not entirely conquered, will at least not be seen as a life-threatening illness. For that, much work has to be done by organizations such as ours, and by every individual whose lifestyle can mean the difference between good health, illness or premature death. As we look to the future, of this you can be absolutely certain: In our tireless efforts to save lives, the American Liver Foundation will continue to implement and further improve the quality of our education programs. For those nearly 4 million people in America who are struggling with one form or another of liver disease, that day cannot come too soon.
