House in Itaipava Internship work at CAMPO Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - 2015 Design development, technical drawings and renderings. The most distinctive aspect of the house lies on its relation with the surroundings. The site in which the construction is placed is very steep and full of greenery. Based on these characteristics, the team adopted for its mineral appearance: the house is covered by slate coating on the outside and, more importantly, consists of a simple mass that allows the house to fit properly in the sloped terrain. The slate is also present on the inside flooring, but the white walls and appearent concrete structure allow a framing of the outside landscape. The house is organized longitudinally, following three zones: the one of the entrance hall, the one of the services and vertical circulation and the one of common spaces, bedrooms, office and atelier.

House in Uberlandia Collaboration, working for Monostudio Minas Gerais, Brazil - 2016 Team: Carlos Eduardo Spencer, Marjorie Lange and Judith Augustinovic Design development, technical drawings and renderings. A quick and low-cost construction were the two main requests of a family from Minas Gerais when ordering the project for their future home in the neighborhood of Franklin Roosevelt in Uberlândia. The house is composed by three independent elements that articulate each other. The first element – the functional wall - is a stereotomic prism with a width of 1,75 meters built in structural concrete blocks and designed to house the service spaces of the house. The second is a wood frame designed to accommodate common use spaces and dormitories. This structure is plugged into the functional wall and can eventually take on new spatial configurations, according to the future needs of the family. The third element houses the first two and is constituted by a light metal structure of fast construction, provided by a local company specialized in constructions of industrial sheds. This structure has roof closures and insulation panels with expanded polyurethane foam. The functional wall is crossed by a passage that marks the path between the outer space and the central internal space of the Minas Gerais traditional house: the kitchen. In response to a family demand, the first floor has two independent access rooms that can function as small rental apartments.

Tazio Nuvolari Museum MSc - Architectural Design Studio Mantua, Italy - 2017 Team: M. Lange and E. Pediaditaki Professors: L. Spinelli, F. Bucci and M. Introini The requirement of the studio was the development of a mediatheque that also houses a museum for the famous racer Tazio Nuvolari. The building was supposed to be placed in the historical city of Mantua, near a masterpiece of the italian architect Giulio Romano, the Palazzo Te. The area was once an island (the Island of Te), a place for gatherings of the Gonzaga family, accessed by bridges, passing through the two gates of Palazzo Te. The first aspects that called the team’s attention was how the result of modifications of the site throughout time led the gates of the Palazzo Te to create a new relation with the city,. They were no longer solely crossed, nowadays, people have the opportunity to walk arround it as well. The design follows this new condition of the gate and surroundings to organize its program. Both architecture and landscape, use the same strategy to organize their spaces: the definition of a grid, the use of vertical elements as points of reference for access and services and the configuration of a skin that is articulated in order to organize the site and indicate the main entrance of the building in relation to the Palazzo Te. In the architectural design, the skin takes form of an external shading device, while in the landscape design it can be seen in the positioning of trees. 20

Desterro Convent requalification MSc - Architectural Design in Historical context studio Mantua, Italy - 2018 Team: M. Lange, F. Meneghelli and N. Zorlu Professors: B. Bogoni and E. Souto de Moura The goal of the atelier was to develop an addition to the Desterro Convent, in Lisbon. The convent used to be connected to a church, but suffered many modifications, remaining only a small cloyster and part of a bigger one. The required program was the combination of student housing with a black box: a space for events, concerts and lectures. The proposal of the studio guided by Barbara Bogoni and Eduardo Souto de Moura was to follow and develop the guidelines suggested by the invited professor Carrilho da Graça for the area. The proposal consisted of positioning the black box on what it used to be the altar of the church and the placement of the student housing following the it’s side aisles. The team decided to use structural masonry for the part of the site that used to have additions without great architectural value and to use a truss structure to provide rooms on top of the aisles, leaving space for an archeological space where the foundations of the old church could be found.

Emilio Isgrò Exhibition in Palazzo Ducale MSc - Final workshop Antico e Nuovo Mantua, Italy - 2019 Team: M. Lange, B. Venturini and C. Falcidieno Professors: L. Spinelli, M. Borsotti and A. Mazzeri The following project is the design of an exhibition space in the Vincenzo Cellars of the Palazzo Ducale in Mantova, for the works of art of the Italian artist Emilio Isgrò. The project starts from the interpretation of Cancellatura, to then define the concept of a Layered Perception. Cancellatura, a language developed by the artist, is the gesture of erasing parts of an instrument of information, such as a book, a picture, a map, or other. The information is no longer seen in its original form, disturbing the visitors’ perception: a loss of reference occurs. According to the group, Cancellatura is not limited to the act of subtracting parts. Instead, as an addition of layers, that, one on top of the other, suggests a new frame to look upon the erased work. The exhibition space is, therefore, always organized based on the superimposition of layers. The organization of these layers inside the exhibition is defined by the interpretation of each work of art and the identified values in it.

Possibilities of an elastic patio MSc - Master Thesis Research - 2019 Relators: A. Lorenzi and S. Marconcini The starting point of this master thesis is the relevance of the patio-house typology for contemporary architecture. It is acknowledged that the history of architecture shows that this type is very flexible since it was used in different continents, by different cultures and adapted to different needs as an additive process. This condition allowed architects to make various combinations with other typologies and test its flexibility. Therefore, the work aims to study the architecture resulting from these experiments and understand how the adaptations of the patio show a conscious effort regarding the relation between architecture and landscape. We have also sought to understand how the measure to which the patio is modified can affect the loss of its essence. To do so, the research will survey and compare the houses with patios designed by architects from Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, trying to understand how their interpretation of very different landscapes led to varied results, despite their common use of patios. The analysis also proposes an understanding of the instruments capable of manipulating the flexibility of the patio and how it can be explored today.
