01

topography design

A Topography is one of the most important aspects that has to be considered in designing an architectural object. The various shapes of land affect how building sit and how the users do their activities. Through this assignment, I learn the importance of topography and how to modify it in order to achieve a stronger design.

conceptual ideas

This assignment is about generating a concept from a Mesquite Tree. The concept will later be used on the next project for developing an inhabit wall design.

23 concepts BRANCHES STRUCTURE The main concept of the design is the branches structure of the Mesquite Tree. Branches connect several important parts of the tree. This idea is implemented to the circulation of the wall design. GEOMETRIC FORMS The design of the wall is highly influenced by the design of the park itself, which is using strong geometric shapes. NATURE EXPERIENCE The green wall and the water circulation inside the wall allow the user to experience the nature. VIEWS The user can see all directions once he/she inhabits the second level

The ideas from the last assignment are developed into the design of an inhabit wall. This project consists of three development steps in order to get the final design, which is built into a plaster model.

assignment 8 concepts STRUCTURE OF THE BRANCHES Using the Mesquite tree’s branches structure as the main concept of the wall.

CIRCULATION The idea of branches that split into several different directions but serve as one function is used as the idea of the circulation of the wall.

STRUCTURE OF THE BRANCHES UNIQUE Using the SHAPES Mesquite tree’s branches structure as the main concept of the wall. The branches of the Mesquite tree create unique random patterns. These patterns are simplified, and then applied to the design of the wall.

CIRCULATION The idea of branches that split into several different directions but serve as one function is used as the idea of the circulation of the wall. LIGHT AND SHADOW Using light and shadow that are created by the branches as the concept of limiting the light that enter to create more private atmosphere inside the space.

UNIQUE SHAPES The branches of the Mesquite tree create unique random patterns. These patterns are simplified, and then applied to the design of the wall.

In designing the actual wall, I found some difficulties since I haven’t experienced this kind of structu before. I decided to walk around ASU Tempe Campus to find similar experience. I paid attention to various kind of walls affected me and the other users. By combining the experience that I got from ing around campus and my conceptual model idea I created my first study model. My idea was to create a wall that provide shade and has a water feature, that draw the users to the Mesquite tree

SPACE DIVISION

EXPLORATION OF SPACE

The wall is divided into three spaces based on the experience of the senses.

The users have to explore the spaces in order to find the unique experiences on each level.

- 1st level : focuses on the sound of the water flows - 2nd level : people can touch and study the Mesquite tree - 3rd level : people can see the surrounding views of the entire park

VIEWS The visitors won’t be able to see the views until they reach the top floor. After that, they will get complete views of the plantation, canal, and the sunset

CIRCULATION

FOCAL POINT

Applying the idea of Mesquite branches ,that spread into multiple directions and connect every part of the tree, as the circulation of the wall.

The wall is intended to be the main foci of the site. For that reason, it has monumental size and monolithic shape to attract the visitors.
