MAROON, GOLD & GREEN Texas State is committed to reducing the energy use on campus. Help us make the difference in your new home by cutting down and water and electricity usage. IN YOUR ROOM… • • • • • •

Turn off the lights when you leave your room. Set the air conditioner so that it will not come on as much when you are not in your room. Unplug appliances when not in use. Plugged-in appliances use energy even if they are turned off. Turn off your computer monitor if you aren't going to use it for more than 20 minutes. Turn off the whole system if you're not going to use it for more than two hours. Avoid printing when possible. Recycle!! (paper, cans, glass, aluminum, batteries and plastics.)

IN THE COMMON AREAS… • •

If you are the last person out of a common area such as a community bathroom or study lounge, turn off those lights as well. Pick up trash when you see it. This is your home now. Help keep it clean.

IN THE LAUNDRY ROOM… • • • •

Only run the clothes washer and dryer when fully loaded. When possible, use cold water to wash clothes. Up to 90 percent of the cost of washing clothes comes from heating the water. Clean the clothes dryer filter after each load. A dirty lint screen can cause your dryer to use up to 30 percent more energy and it can be a fire hazard. Do not over-dry clothes; use minimum amount of time necessary to dry them.

IN THE BATHROOM… • • •

Limit time in the shower to help conserve water. Turn off the water when you are brushing your teeth or shaving. Report leaks immediately.

IN YOUR CAR… • • • •

Drive less. Walk, carpool or take public transit. Check tire pressure, and keep the car tuned and well maintained. Drive the posted speed limit. High speeds and “gassing it” uses more gasoline. Buy a fuel-efficient car. The average American driver will expend 5,600 less pounds of carbon monoxide gases per year by driving a car that gets at least 32 miles to the gallon.

WHEN OUT ON CAMPUS… • •

Dispose of cigarette butts properly. These, like most human-made trash, are not biodegradable. Pick up trash when you see it. Even in cities, most trash eventually finds its way to the oceans.
