ANDRÉS BADILLA QUESADA

ABOUT ANDRÉS I am Andrés Badilla, an architecture student at Universidad Veritas since 2014. I am in my last career courses, taking the fourteenth class of design, out of a total of fifteen. During my studies, I have learned that architecture requires a little dose of talent combined with a large dose of hard work and dedication. I like to read, I like to research, I do not like to remain with doubts. In the past I worked as an assistant and a drawer at Fournier y Rojas Arquitectos (http://www.foroarq.net), a design and architecture firm. Currently, I am working on my graduate project about a Penitentiary Psychiatric Hospital, in Pavas, San José, Costa Rica. With nothing else to add, I let my work speak for me.

9AVE / 806 TOWER The 9ave | 806 tower is a 60 stories building located in Hells Kitchen, West Midtown, Manhattan, NYC. The project is based on the 80/20 concept, where 20% of the efforts produce 80% of the results. Therefore, the way in which the program and the volume form of the building are distributed, as well as other small details, corresponds to a proportion based on 80/20. The program of first use is in the lower parts of the building (20%) and the program of an extended stay is in the upper parts (80%). In the first volume there is a plaza, restaurants, leisure, cultural spaces and nurseries. In the second and largest volume are located offices, teamwork, start ups and finally the hotel in the highest part.

VIZCAYA SMART COMMUNITY CENTER / This community center consists of two equal volumes but in a 1:2 relation, their proximity makes them almost one but that little distance that separates them creates the intentional division of their programs. Taking advantage of the site’s conditions, the volumes are located in order to create an experience in the project’s access, meaning that from the first contact with the place the user will be able to distinguish the tension between the two volumes. The former with the objective to draw in the young people who are at social risk. Some situations contribute in particular to the user’s experience, one of them is the cooperative association (symbiosis) in which two elements like the building and the inside garden benefits from each other’s proximity, creating spatial relations between them, integrating the public and the private. Another would be, for example, the presence of different levels in the buildings that also allows the user to take advantage of the views and to produce a tour experience across the ramps.

LIMÓN / MICROSOFT The premise was to design one little office for Microsoft using a Steel module and since we live in the Tropic, I decided to design it in the province of Limón, Costa Rica. It is a humid area with very high temperatures, so I explore the bioclimatic architecture and provide the project with shade and cross ventilation.

UCR / TRAIN STATION The project aims to be a reinterpretation of the train station located opposite the faculty of architecture of the University of Costa Rica. The intention was to use a prefabricated modular roof assembled on site and suspended by cables from eight steel and concrete masts.

ATTACHMENT IN MOTION /

As projected, La Sabana in San José and nearby areas will increase its population by at least 220% by the year 2047, therefore new challenges will arise. Among them are the need to increase the percentage of public spaces available to the inhabitants and a better connection with them. Another challenge is the need to mobilize this amount of population in a fast, safe and pleasant way. In the area there is a disconnection between the largest public space in San José and the surrounding areas. La Sabana is literally a green island surrounded by a sea of concrete and even worse by a road abyss dominated by the vehicle. The project aims to facilitate the connection of the public space with the private one, creating an uninterrupted flow for the pedestrian. It also aims to be a threshold between the natural and artificial, preparing the user for this transition by stimulating their senses. All the above with the intention of returning a public space that has been denied for years to the pedestrian.

MOLECULE STUDIO This project presents the design of a studio similar to the Investigation for Innovation Center (CINNO, its Spanish acronym ), under some premises, for example, to use only 15m2 of constructed area and to include the aforementioned fundamentals of architecture, such as the window, the access, the stairway and other functional elements like the bathroom, and all that would be needed to develop the activity proposed in the program.

[02]

The developed discourse arises from the idea of breaking the regular form of studios, where the worktable is always in the center and everything is developed from that point. The form in which the project is inspired is borne from the molecular geometries of chemistry, specifically from “plane trigonometry”, where all the molecules turn around a central molecule, arranged in this case in 120° angles. In this project I propose to use the center of the space as a point from which it is possible to access any of the activities that people would like to practice in this place, either laser cutting machines, 3D printers, worktable, bathroom or the stairway that leads to a rest and work place, located in the upper side of the studio. CULTURAL CENTER SAN ANTONIO ESCAZU / Located in the mountains of San Antonio of Escazú and with privileged views of the Central Valley, the Cultural Center of Escazú has three main buildings that promote the district’s culture: - A Mascarade workshop - An art gallery for artists and local artisans. - A music school In order to mirror its character as a promoter of local culture, the building pretend to be a landmark that stands out in the landscape of the place and its architectural language intends to merge with the city’s language. The building mixes the concrete with the wood and the cobbled floor to emulate, in the best possible way, the ambience of a handcraft studio. The project combines the necessary buildings with a path of three public squares that lead into an amphitheater. The route is designed to attract larger flows of pedestrians coming from the adjacent school and the Catholic temple of San Antonio, located diagonal to this project.

ATMOSPHERES OF FREEDOM / How do we design architectural spaces destined to promote health in Costa Rica? What considerations are taken in their design process? In the 60s and 70s, public health spaces enjoyed a time when attention was paid to investment in infrastructure and quality design according to the standards of the time. From the 1980s to the present, the public health system has decreased its investment in infrastructure as a result of a decrease in public spending. Currently, a large part of the budget is wasted on maintenance of structures that have completed their useful life and have no possibility of modernization. As a consequence, most of them have spaces with poor design and without attention to scientific data that can contribute to human well-being. An architectural project based on “Design based on scientific evidence” is then approached, thus allowing informed decision making, improvement in the quality of care, stay and recovery of patients. The project to be addressed will be the Care Center for Psychiatric Patients in Conflict with the Law (CAPEMCOL), created in 2009 after a resolution of the Constitutional Chamber and which is currently in a temporary location awaiting the design and construction of its definitive headquarters. The patients of this care center are under a security measure classified as “temporary or permanent insurance” depending on the evolution of their disease, for having committed an unlawful act not guilty. Therefore, the ultimate goal of the site is to create an atmosphere of recovery where the patient can prepare to return to society.
