Process_Anomalies for two soprano saxophones op. 7

about the piece Process_Anomalies started out as a short post-Minimalist duet for two oboes during the summer of 2014. Given its punchy character, however, PA ended up being rescored for saxophone duet. As the piece evolved and expanded, it came to signify as a little portrait of present-day technology. Today’s technology at its extreme: sometimes running amuck and out of control (such as the scattered gibberish that seethingly spews forth on your laptop’s green screen upon downloading some virus), and other times remarkably ingenious and exceptionally elegant (like those clever smart phone apps which enable you to efficiently accomplish more in the day than you had previously thought). Constant mutation and evolution are the subjects of Process_Anomalies, resulting in both infernal and inspired ends. Many thanks to Anthony Suter, Kelsey Broersma, Nicolai Gervasi-Monarrez, and the Composition Studio at the University of Redlands. Chino Hills, CA. 10NOV14

about the composer Harnessing the chugging, energetic sounds of contemporary Post-Minimalism as a starting point, Andres R. Luz (b. 1974) derives his artistic idiom from the rich legacy of music history stretching back to Medieval and Renaissance stylistic practices, up to those of present day Post-Modernism. Among the many influences that inform his music, Mr. Luz cites folkloric aspects of his FilipinoAmerican background which have served as the source inspiration of a number of his works, including his concertante piece for marimba solo and mixed ensemble, bulacan_polymorphic (2011), and [Micro/Industrious] for oboe and piano (2012). Mr. Luz studied with Jeffrey Miller at California State University, East Bay, and is presently pursuing the Master of Music Compositon, studying with Anthony Suter, at the University of Redlands in Redlands, CA.
