TODAY IN HISTORY

On 6th September 1948, Princess Juliana of the Netherlands became Queen. Her mother, Queen Wilhelmina, abdicated. This picture shows them together. During the Second World War, Princess Juliana had lived in exile, in Ottawa, Canada, with her family. She and her husband, Prince Bernard had four daughters. Queen Juliana brought them up in a way that allowed them to have experience of ordinary life. Her eldest daughter, Beatrix, became Queen when Juliana abdicated in 1980.

SEPTEMBER 2010

THE WAY WE WERE

I seem to have acquired a large collection of scarves. I like them because they add a bit of colour to a plain outfit. When I was younger we always seemed to wear them as headscarves - something I never do these days. The Queen still appears in photographs wearing a headscarf, especially photos of her out in the countryside or on holiday. There used to be a fashion for crossing the scarf under your chin and tying the ends, trapping the triangle at the back. I haven’t seen anyone doing that for ages, have you?

DO YOU REMEMBER?

This is a very familiar image of Queen Victoria. It’s on the cover of a book I got from the Library, about all the major building projects that were carried out during her reign. Queen Victoria’s offspring married into practically every royal family in Europe. They already had strong connections with Germany since Prince Albert, their father, was German. Queen Victoria became the longest reigning British monarch in 1896, and she still had several years to go because she lived until 1901. What a lot of changes she must have seen in her lifetime.

OVER TO YOU

Dear Mary and Jack Have you noticed that they have changed the packaging for Smarties, and they’ve changed the colours too. I used to like the orange ones best because they actually tasted like orange, but blues were a close second. The colours are very wishy washy now, and the cardboard tube isn’t nearly as good for making things with or so my grandson tells me. I suppose this is another example of the ‘new improved’ version the advertisers claim when there are changes. Best wishes George

Carers Notes Monday September 6th, 2010

PAGE 1 Today in History [left hand column] - Queen Juliana Background: The picture shows Princess Juliana of the Netherlands as a little girl, with her mother Queen Wilhelmina. Queen Wilhelmina abdicated, i.e she gave up being Queen, in 1948. ‘The Netherlands’ is another name for Holland. In the UK monarchs usually reign until they die, although King Edward VIII abdicated in 1938. Linked to Do you Remember, p2, and Singalong, p3. Questions: Do you think it is a good idea for the King or Queen to abdicate? Can you remember when King Edward VIII abdicated? What did the newspapers say about it? The Way We Were [right hand column] - Headscarves. Background: Fashionable in the 60s, especially tied round the back. Questions: When would you have worn a headscarf? What shape were they? How big were they? What were they made of? What did the fabric feel like? What was your favourite colour and pattern? Did you mind getting your hair wet if it was raining? PAGE 2 Do You Remember [left hand column] - Queen Victoria Background: Queen Victoria became the longest reigning English monarch in September 1896. The years of her reign were times of great developments particularly in manufacturing, public buildings, railways etc. She was married to a German Prince, Albert, and they had 9 children. He died in 1861 and Queen Victoria mourned him for the rest of her life. When Victoria died in 1901, their son Prince Edward became King Edward VII. Linked to Today in History, p1, and Singalong, p3. Questions: What other Queens do you know of? Do you think it’s better to have a King or a Queen? Is it an easy job or a hard job do you think? Can you think of any famous buildings that were built during Queen Victoria’s reign? Over to You [right hand column] Smarties Background: Smarties have been around since the 1950s, in a distinctive cylindrical tube. They were very brightly coloured, until people started worrying about the effect of E numbers. Blue Smarties were introduced later. The orange ones tasted of orange but the others didn’t have much flavour. Red ones could be licked and used to make your lips red, like lipstick. Questions: Do you like Smarties? What are they made of? Which ones did you like best? What could you use the empty tube for? Did you like the red ones? PAGE 3 Quiz [left hand column] Items of decoration, linked to Do You Remember, p2 Singalong [right hand column] The National Anthem, God Save the Queen. Linked to Today in History p1, and Do You Remember, p2.
