THE WAY WE WERE
May is a lovely time in the garden. It’s true what they say that ‘April showers bring forth May’s flowers’. Is it the combination of plenty of water and more hours of sunshine that make May such a glorious month for blooms? It always seems to be a time when the scent of flowers is strong too. We had both purple and white lilacs in our garden and the smell on a May evening was delightful. Cussons used to make lilac scented soap that captured it exactly. Colours were strong too. I loved the deep heavenly blue of Anchusa in May.

DO YOU REMEMBER?
OVER TO YOU
Dear Mary and Jimmy Ma and her friends had lots of superstitions about the month of May. Ma told my sister Susie that the best thing for a pure and clear complexion was to wash her face with dew gathered on a May morning. A friend of Ma’s had a different slant telling her to 'Wash your face in the May dew and enjoy good luck'. Nan Stanley had earlier told Susie that on the first day of May girls should wash their faces in the dew and wish before sunrise. While doing this she should name some lad in her own mind. She would get her wish and he would become her sweetheart. Elvis never did make contact with her!
Have you or any of your readers been across the Humber Bridge? It was opened in 1981. It’s a huge single span suspension bridge 2,428 yards long. We lived on the Lincolnshire side of the bridge in the 1970s and 80s, so we watched it being built. It was a magnificent feat of engineering. Our lads who were schoolboys at the time were really interested to see the huge cranes that were used, and the way they lowered massive metal sections into place. Before the bridge was built you had to drive a long way inland to cross the river. Best wishes from Geoff
