TODAY IN HISTORY
THE WAY WE WERE
One of the world’s most famous paintings, The Mona Lisa, by Leonardo da Vinci, was stolen on 21st August 1911. The theft was discovered the next day by a painter, Louis Beroud, when he visited the Louvre Museum which had displayed the painting for 5 years.
When soft fruit is plentiful at this time of year, I think about the way we used to bottle fruit. It meant that we had a good supply of fruit throughout the winter for pies and tarts.
There were four iron pegs where the Mona Lisa should have been on show. At first, the museum security guards thought the painting had been removed to be photographed. The Louvre, was closed for a week while they tried to solve the crime.
I gave a lot of my old cookery books to my daughter when I moved in here, and she was telling me the other day that she has just used one of Mrs Beeton’s recipes for apricots in brandy, which sounds delicious. I don’t think I ever threw a jam jar away in my life - they just got used again and again.

DO YOU REMEMBER?
Do you remember the excitement in the air when the circus was coming to town? First the posters would go up on the fences and end walls of the rows of terraced houses where we lived. The circus always came to our town during the summer holidays, and we loved it. My favourites were the performing elephants. I loved the way they went down on their knees, or retrieved things with their trunks. The tigers used to roar very loudly! My sister liked watching the trapeze artistes best. We all loved the clowns, and we played at circuses in the back garden long after they’d all left town.
OVER TO YOU
Dear Mary and Jack Did you ever bath your children in the kitchen sink, or the wash basin, when they were small enough to fit? When we went to stay at my grandparents’ house for a week every summer, my Aunty Doris used to bath me in the sink, because otherwise it would have been the tin bath in the living room, and that took too much hot water! Fortunately, by the time I was too big to fit in the sink, Grandma had a nice new inside bathroom. Best wishes, Jenny
