TODAY IN HISTORY

THE WAY WE WERE

One of the world’s most famous paintings, The Mona Lisa, by Leonardo da Vinci, was stolen on 21st August 1911. The theft was discovered the next day by a painter, Louis Beroud, when he visited the Louvre Museum which had displayed the painting for 5 years.

When soft fruit is plentiful at this time of year, I think about the way we used to bottle fruit. It meant that we had a good supply of fruit throughout the winter for pies and tarts.

There were four iron pegs where the Mona Lisa should have been on show. At first, the museum security guards thought the painting had been removed to be photographed. The Louvre, was closed for a week while they tried to solve the crime.

I gave a lot of my old cookery books to my daughter when I moved in here, and she was telling me the other day that she has just used one of Mrs Beeton’s recipes for apricots in brandy, which sounds delicious. I don’t think I ever threw a jam jar away in my life - they just got used again and again.
