The Way We Were
Yul Brynner
Retro Magazines
On July 11, 1920, Yul Brynner was born in Vladivostok. He became a famous movie star and theater actor. He was probably best known for his role as Mongkut, the King of Siam in the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, The King and I. His second best role was that of Pharaoh in The Ten Commandments. Yul Brynner won an Academy Award for his performance in the movie version of The King and I. He also played that part on stage more than 4,500 times. He shaved his head for the role and it gave him a very striking appearance. Copyright © 2013

Neither my mother nor my grandmother ever read very many magazines. They always thought it was rather extravagant to buy magazines that just had to be thrown out when you had read them. Because of that, I envied my friend Margie because her mother had the ‘Woman’s Day’ magazine delivered to her door every week! I used to read it whenever I went over to their house. Do you remember how the problems which readers sent in looking for answers to, were quite mild compared with nowadays?

Do You Remember?
Bicycle
Mrs Danvers
When I finally got a new bike it was fantastic, it had ten speeds! We lived in a hilly area and the hills were a chore to conquer on my old one speed bike. Now a click of the lever on the handlebars would put me into the lowest gear and I could easily climb any hill around. There were also flat stretches of road where I could flick it into high gear and zoom without my legs having to do so much work. I loved cruising around our neighborhood with the wind in my face and imagined I was a great Tour de France racer.

Dear Christine and Jack, Reading the article about Daphne du Maurier a few days ago made me remember how much I had enjoyed reading her book ‘Rebecca’. The movie was even better and I can still picture the sinister face of ‘Mrs. Danvers’. I felt such sympathy for that poor young woman who became the second Mrs. de Winter. Usually I prefer books and radio to movies or TV. When you see them played by actors or actresses they don’t look how you imagined them. Best wishes, from Kate
