WELCOME TO THE FUZION 100 Manchester is a world-famous city with a great sporting heritage, and it’s with great pleasure that I welcome you to our city.

We have the desire and ambitions to provide world-class sporting events for our residents and visitors alike, and the Fuzion 100 Manchester Trophy 2018 will serve to deliver a number of our ambitions.

Sir Richard Leese Leader of Manchester City Council

Many of Manchester’s schools and clubs will be taking on the role of ‘ball crew’ over the course of the week. Manchester College learners, with horticultural support from Didsbury in Bloom, have worked tirelessly to dress the site. Our volunteer network has provided more than sixty-five volunteers to assist our partners at the Lawn Tennis Association to deliver the event.

Our ambitions are supported by a host of sport facilities and a citywide Metrolink network. Sport is in our blood, and we continue to work with our partners at Transport for Greater Manchester and The Northern Lawn Tennis Club to bring you an exciting world-class women’s tennis event here in Manchester. Much of the preparation for this event has been done in the hope that you will enjoy your time here in Manchester, be it as a spectator, visitor, athlete or volunteer. Finally, the very best of luck to the officials and competitors.

We are delighted to welcome you to Manchester which has traditionally been a part of the LTA’s summer grass court major events series leading up to Wimbledon. The club has a long and illustrious history, established on the current site since 1910.

This year sees the tournament partner with a new sponsor, Coco Fuzion 100, and we are delighted to work with them to showcase this women’s ITF Pro Circuit grass court event.

David Rawlinson Deputy President, Lawn Tennis Association

All our events, small or large, are a fantastic window on our sport. We hope they act as an inspiration for you all to find a tennis venue, pick up a racket and get on court. Many of you are already part of the backbone of tennis in the north-west and British tennis, and I hope that by working together we can encourage more people to try this great game and then play tennis more often.

Events like this are not delivered alone and we are only too aware of the vital contribution made by our partners in bringing a tournament like this to fruition. We thank the the ITF, our new partner Coco Fuzion 100, Manchester City Council, the Northern Lawn Tennis Club and the tournament volunteers and officials who play such an integral role, as well as all our sponsors for their continued support in growing the sport. I wish all the players, those competing from home and abroad, the very best of luck this week.

Finally we thank you the fans for your support of our great game. Enjoy the action!

MANCHESTER TROPHY On behalf of our members at The Northern, I would like to express my thanks to Fuzion 100 our 2018 Manchester Trophy title sponsor and to our partners Manchester City Council and the Lawn Tennis Association. We would like to extend a warm welcome and to all the players, officials and especially our volunteers, sponsors and enthusiastic spectators.

We are proud to welcome home club member Naomi Broady, British No 3 singles, No 1 doubles and 2017 semi-finalist. Our grateful thanks go to her for her support for the tournament and she joins an illustrious list of past players. The Manchester Silver Challenge Tray, first commissioned in 1920 has been lifted by Billie Jean King and such great British players as Anne Hobbs, Sue Barker and Jo Durie.

Neville Hewer

Chairman, The Northern Lawn Tennis Club

We are proud to host this tournament with our partners because it showcases the strength, agility and skill of women’s modern professional tennis, especially as demonstrated in the challenging art of grass court play. In addition it is a fabulous opportunity for local school children to play tennis themselves under the supervision of our coaches, as well as watch the professionals compete which we believe will inspire some local stars of the future. So enjoy your time with us, cheer on your favourite players and make a date in your diary for next year.

On behalf of the tournament team and all our partners, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the Fuzion 100 Manchester Trophy, voted ‘Manchester Event of the Year 2016’, here at The Northern Lawn Tennis Club.

We are particularly excited to welcome women’s international tennis here in 2018, with prize money of $100,000. This is the highest amount of women’s prize money that has ever been offered in the north west, and perfectly fits with the strong base of female athletes here in the Manchester area, including British No.3 tennis player Naomi Broady.

Richard Joyner Tournament Director

There are numerous people involved in the organisation of this event, and I would particularly like to thank: The Northern Lawn Tennis Club, Manchester City Council, our title sponsor Fuzion 100, Transport for Greater Manchester and all our event partners, volunteers and contractors for their hard work.

I hope you have an enjoyable time here at the Fuzion 100 Manchester Trophy, and good luck to all our competitors in what promises to be a great week of tennis.

PARTICIPATION LEGACY PROJECT

The Fuzion 100 Manchester Trophy event will host a Participation Legacy Project in 2018 which aims to get more people playing tennis more often in Manchester.

The programme kicks off this year with a Schools Roadshow two weeks before the tournament where The Northern Lawn Tennis Club and Crosssports will work together to engage 1000 pupils from local schools in Manchester. The target of the campaign is to then grow the Northern mini tennis programme by 100 new players. This ambitious offer will use high energy coaching and inflatable tennis activities to inspire the young people to play. Alongside this, during the tournament week there will be an extensive programme of participation activity onsite. The Quorn Family Tennis Cup starts off the programme on Sunday during qualifying. The event is a red ball competition where pairs of one adult / one child play together in a fun format. The pairs taking part are the winners of local club events that have taken place previously across the North West.

On Monday there will be a day promoting the She Rallies initiative which aims to get more women and girls into playing and delivering tennis activity. In the morning female teachers, coaches and activators will attend a Starter Teen Tennis workshop that will send

10

thenorthern.co.uk

them away with lots of new ideas for their venue. In the afternoon, girls from local schools will take part in a Double Trouble Tournament -a great fun team event. Local schools and community groups will be onsite from Tuesday to Friday to take part in coaching clinics and to watch professional tennis live in the stands.

Wednesday evening will host a Team Challenge event which is a fun, team competition aimed at mini and junior players in club programmes who are new or inexperienced to competition. For those attending the event as a spectator, you can take part in the Metrolink Fastest serve competition each day. There will also be a Cardio Tennis taster session on Saturday afternoon and a Tennis Xpress taster session on Sunday afternoon that you can drop in and try.

Other activities will include a local Inter Club event, Tennis Tykes and Junior warm up event before the finals. Growing tennis in Manchester is the number one priority of the programme and the interest gained from the legacy activities will be directed to a varied tennis offer in the parks, clubs and education sites across the city.

PRIZE MONEY In 2017 the Manchester Trophy was upgraded to a women’s ITF

Pro Circuit $100K event, which saw the Singles winner receiving

$15,200 in prize money, and the Doubles winners sharing a prize

money pot of $5,573 which constituted the highest ever on offer

at a women’s professional tennis event in the north west. In 2018

the Fuzion 100 Manchester Trophy continues to be one of a select

group of $100K prize money events.

$100K events are the highest prize money level available on the ITF Pro Circuit with only 11 scheduled across the world for 2018. Great Britain has the highest number with four events which make up the Fuzion 100

Trophy Series of grass court events in Surbiton (2-10 June), Manchester, Ilkley (16-24 June) and Southsea (26-29 June).

The Fuzion 100 Trophy Series provides vital grass-court play in the lead up to The Championships, Wimbledon where many of the players appearing in Manchester will go on to play.

Women’s $100K events are only one level below the WTA tour, and as a result there are a number of top 100 players who regularly compete at this level.

We hope you enjoy watching this elite level of women’s tennis on the ITF

Pro Circuit here in Manchester. For further information on the ITF Pro Circuit visit www.itftennis.com/procircuit

event. For the past few months, the College’s learners have been completing work on the site, dressing for the event, as well as building and painting planters.

They have helped to give the tournament a fitting feel for the

‘Wimbledon of the North’, and have made the Northern Lawn Tennis Club look in-bloom.

NAOMI BROADY INTERVIEW As a local girl from Stockport and of course British No.3 how does it feel to have home advantage?

It makes such a huge difference to have home court advantage. People always say that Wimbledon is my home tournament but it’s actually so far away from home so it makes such a big difference to have a real home crowd and have all the support behind me.

How does it feel to be the face of the Manchester Trophy for the second year running?

I was so excited when I was asked to be the face of the Manchester Trophy again. The Northern has been my home club since I was young so I’m so excited.

Have you adjusted or adapted to any new training styles in the past 12 months?

We’ve been working on my serve a lot during the past year, it’s been quite up and down. But other than that it’s more of the same, I’m really trying to zone in on what my game style is and keep focussing on that and keep improving on each and every area that I can.

At what age were you introduced to tennis?

I first started playing tennis when I was seven years old, just around the corner from The Northern at a small local tennis club. We played in the rain and

thunder so I don’t really have the best memories from my early days of tennis. When I started it was never supposed to be something I would do

professionally, it was just one of the extracurricular activities we did, we also did gymnastics, swimming like most young children do.

What is the highlight of your career?

I have a few highlights, I won a round at Wimbledon a couple of years ago, that was amazing. I played in the mixed doubles with my brother (Liam) at

Wimbledon last year, that was great and we managed to win a round. In April I won my first WTA title in doubles (in Acapulco, Mexico) so that was really

special having been on tour for so long, to finally get a WTA title.

Your brother Liam who plays in the professional ranks, do you train together and who is the most competitive?

Liam and I don’t actually train together, if he’s home and I’m home I think the last time we played together was over a year ago, probably over Christmas we

just had a casual hit together. The men’s and the women’s games are so different and I always like to say that I’d beat him so we don’t play together.

It’s no secret that you and Heather Watson have a great doubles partnership on the court, what makes you so compatible as a doubles pair?

Heather (Watson) and I always say that we’re so honest with each other, we’ve known each other since we were so young. We played one of our first ever

matches against each other, I think she was eight and I was ten, she was about the height of the net, she was tiny. So we’ve known each other for so long

we’re really honest with each other, sometimes quite brutally, but then we’re always able to have a laugh because we’re such good friends so I think our

chemistry really makes a difference when we’re on court.

Last year you came within touching distance of making the final at the Manchester Trophy, can you go one step further this year?

I lost such a close match last year in the semi-finals of the Manchester Trophy to Zarina Diyas who went on to win the tournament and then did really well

at Wimbledon. So that was a tough draw but who knows what will happen this year, it will depend on the rest of the field and of course how I play myself as

well. We had such great weather last year so I’m just hoping for another great tournament this year and I’m really looking forward to it.

TROPHY HUNTING Tennis now has a British grass-court swing below the main ATP/WTA pro tours. It’s called the Fuzion 100 Trophy Series and, as a breeding ground for future star players, it’s invaluable.

If you want a snapshot of the British grass-court tennis scene, then the Fuzion 100 Trophy Series is a wonderful place to start. Now in its third year, it runs throughout June and features some of the oldest clubs, one of the newest, and certainly some of the most prestigious in the country. Its wide geographical spread – from Ilkley in West Yorkshire, via Manchester and Nottingham, to Surbiton in the London suburbs and Southsea in Hampshire – means that tennis fans from all over England can get their grasscourt fix in the run-up to Wimbledon.

George Donnelly is the LTA’s Tournament Lead overseeing the whole series. He explains what a great opportunity it is for players and fans alike. “It’s a chance to see many international players, male and female, ranked between 50 and 150 in the world, as they prepare for Wimbledon,” he says. “Many of them at this level are the future stars of the game. Thanks to serious investment in the venues, this year they will have better facilities than before, and more prize money.” Indeed, the prize money fund for the entire series has almost tripled, rising from $300,000 in 2016 to $850,000 this year.

Donnelly points out how the different events can inspire local players to take up tennis. “With five tournaments in the series now, it means we have a much better platform to showcase tennis across the UK and encourage local people to pick up a racket and try out tennis for themselves.”

The first tournament in the series, from 2 to 10 June, is the Fuzion 100 Surbiton Trophy, at Surbiton Racket and Fitness Club in south London. Here, on the club’s 11 grass courts, there will be both an ITF women’s event and an ATP Challenger for the men. Established in 1881, this club has quite a history. Among the tennis legends who have played here are Fred Perry, Stefan Edberg, Pat Cash, Jim Courier, Tim Henman, Boris Becker, Michael Chang, Andy Roddick and Roger Federer.

From 10 to 17 June, the series moves to The Northern Lawn Tennis & Squash Club in south Manchester, where its seven grass courts (including two protected from rain by inflatable covers, and two with flat covers) will host an ITF women’s tournament. Like Surbiton, The Northern was also established in 1881. In its time it has been graced by many of the world’s greatest players and has hosted major Davis Cup ties. The legendary Pete Sampras won his very first grass-court tournament here in 1990. In 2016 this tournament won the Event of the Year

18

thenorthern.co.uk

category at the annual Manchester Sports Awards. “The quality of the club’s grass courts has often found it referred to as ‘the Wimbledon of the North’,” the LTA website states.

During the same week as Manchester’s event there is a men’s ATP Challenger at Nottingham Tennis Centre. (A WTA tournament runs alongside this but is separate to the Fuzion 100 Trophy Series.) With its 13 courts, this venue near the city’s university has hosted some of the world’s very best players during its history, both in ATP and Davis Cup events.

From 16 to 24 June the series then moves north to Ilkley Lawn Tennis & Squash Club. Here, the Fuzion 100 Ilkley Trophy includes a women’s ITF tournament and a men’s ATP Challenger. As well as its 12 grass courts, the club has a new clubhouse and fitness suite, opened last year as part of a £2.5million investment programme. Ilkley also won Bradford Metropolitan Event of the Year for 2016.

“Established in 1880, the club occupies a unique location by the River Wharfe in very picturesque surroundings looking up to the panoramic backdrop of the worldfamous Ilkley Moor,” states the LTA website. “Ilkley is a jewel of the North, situated on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. If you think Wimbledon village and put it on the edge of beautiful countryside with a true Yorkshire welcome, you will be imagining Ilkley Lawn Tennis & Squash Club.”

The final series tournament, staged the week before Wimbledon starts, is the Fuzion 100 Southsea Trophy. It’s an ITF women’s event at Canoe Lake Leisure, a new venue in the Hampshire town of Southsea. There are ten new grass courts there, as well as a brand-new pavilion. Unlike the other four tournaments in the series, Southsea is free for spectators to attend. Ticket sales across the series as a whole are very healthy. Last year saw 5,200 ticket sales, and Donnelly says that this year will substantially eclipse that figure.

“I’m excited about the interest these events are having on a local level,” he says. “I’m confident of sell-out days at a number of events.

World-class venues for sport and culture, and an incredible sporting history.

Bring your event to Manchester, sportsevents@manchester.gov.uk

HEADY DAYS FOR WOMEN’S SPORT By Eleanor Preston These are heady days for women’s sport in this country, and nowhere is that more true than in Manchester. Sport has always been part of the lifeblood of Manchester, from being home to two of the most famous and successful football teams in the world, to its successful hosting of the 2002 Commonwealth Games and the fantastic legacy of venues and training facilities that followed. Fewer places can boast a stronger sporting pedigree.

Not surprisingly, Manchester has been front and centre in the campaign to support and encourage the growth of women’s sport, and the tennis tournament that you are part of today is not only an emblem of that but has the opportunity to inspire the next generation of Manchester’s sportswomen as well.

Women’s football has long been a big part of that success story thanks to Manchester City women’s team. The team trains and plays at the team’s high tech and globally renowned football academy adjacent to the Etihad Stadium. With top level strength and conditioning advice, expert technical and tactical training and a rigid fitness regime, the Club has produced some of the best female athletes in the world. No wonder Manchester City Women’s Football Club are the current FA women’s Super League champions. The ancient football rivalry between City and Manchester United, the red half of the sport’s most enduring equation, took a new and exciting twist this year when United announced the creation of its own women’s football team. The Club recently appointed former England captain Casey Stoney as manager in a move which is set to raise the profile and pedigree of the Manchester United women’s team even further. Stoney, 36, won 130 caps and captained the Great Britain team at the 2012 London Olympics.

While Mancunians undoubtedly love their football, there are plenty of other incredible female athletes and teams to celebrate in the city. Manchester Thunder is one of the highest achieving teams in the Vitality Netball Superleague and fields a string of capped internationals in its squads season after season. Indeed Helen Housby, who so memorably shot the last-minute winning goal to give England the gold in the Commonwealth Games in April, is a Thunder alumnus. England’s victorious coach Tracey Neville left Thunder to coach England. Teams such as Stockport Scarlets (women’s rugby) and athletes such as former squash world champion and former World No.1 Laura Massaro are all part of the surge of women’s sport in Manchester. In tennis, Stockport’s Naomi Broady, will have a starring role in her home tournament here at the Northern. Broady was a semi-finalist at last year’s Manchester Trophy and established herself as not just a fan favourite with the local crowd but also showed the grass-court prowess that will be a threat to whomever she plays at Wimbledon in three weeks’ time. You can read Naomi’s thoughts in her own words on page 17 in this programme.

Manchester’s sports facilities, most of which are based at Sportscity, are the envy of cities around the world. Sportcity was developed for the 2002 Commonwealth Games and while the centrepiece is undoubtedly the 48,000 seat City of Manchester Stadium, the site also features the National Squash Centre, the 6,500 seat Manchester Regional Arena, English Institute of Sport, Manchester Velodrome and the Tennis Centre as well as a state-of-the-art gymnasium. It hosts over 400 events each year and receives over 4,500,000 visits annually.

Sportswomen are a big part of that, just as they are a big part of Manchester’s sporting success. Showcasing world class women’s sport, like the tennis you’ll see at this week’s Fuzion-100 Manchester Trophy, is what Manchester does best.

“AMONGST THE BEST GR Each year, the club is visited by the Sports Turf Research Institute. The conclusions of their June 2017 report stated that “The grass courts at The Northern were in excellent condition… these courts are amongst the best grass courts, aside from those at The All England Lawn Tennis Club, in the UK”. We caught up with Des Ruchwaldy, The Northern’s Head

Groundsman, whilst he was preparing the 7 grass courts for the 2018

Manchester Trophy to ask him a few questions about how Des and

his team go about preparing the courts for 9 days of tournament play. Des, who joined The Northern 17 years ago, explains what goes into

the preparations. “At the end of every September, we do a full

renovation of all of the grass courts. A process that involves the

courts being sprayed off before being scarified, seeded and

topdressed before Autumn sets in”.

“The ground at The Northern is clay loam – ideal for consistent ball

bounce, but not so good in the winter as it doesn’t drain well and gets waterlogged easily so making it difficult to work on before the Spring”.

The scale of the task is enormous - each year, the club purchases 480kg of dwarf ryegrass seed which is put onto the courts in the

Autumn and the Spring. In addition to this, 40 tonnes of clay loam is

used for the renovation each September.

Work begins on the grass courts in March (subject to the weather of

course) when Des and team start to cylinder mow the grass to a

height of 16mm. In the week before the tournament, the grass is cut

to 8mm and then down to 6mm or 7mm for the tournament itself.

“I was delighted when The Northern got the pre-Wimbledon grass

tournament back in 2015” said Des. “My mission each year is to

produce first class surfaces for the enjoyment of the members and

its great to have professional players from all over the world playing

in Manchester.

“One of the biggest changes at the club in the last 2 years is the

introduction of rain covers for 4 of the grass courts” said Des. With

the financial support of the LTA, the club has installed concrete ring

beams running parallel to the tram lines of the court to secure flat covers on the grass courts. In 2017, this meant that members were

able to play on the grass courts 25% more of the time during the

summer season.

Des’ team for the tournament itself is 12 strong as he is joined by 10

students from MMU. The preparation takes a week of hard work

before the tournament starts and then it’s a long week for the team.

The load out after the tournament finishes on Sunday takes 24 hours and the grass courts are ready for play by the members again on the Tuesday after the tournament.

Other people think that we are really good at what we do, which is demonstrated by the awards that The Northern often wins.

THYME FOR GREAT FOOD The Northern is delighted to have teamed up with local business Thyme Out, who will be looking after all of the outside catering during the 2018 tournament week after a very successful debut in 2017 with great feedback from visitors to the tournament. Thyme Outside is the sister company of Thyme Out Food Co – a well-established casual eatery based in West Didsbury. Launched in 2006 by chef Ben Hayes, Thyme Out has always offered a catering service alongside its ever popular brunch and casual dining dishes. With a background in preparing catering and traiteur style food, Ben and Thyme Out’s style of home-produced catering presented with flair quickly took off.

Providing corporate catering for clients such as Siemens and Cisco from day one, soon followed by private event catering and wedding catering, it soon made sense to launch a dedicated outside catering arm to the business – and so Thyme Outside was born.

After servicing catering orders from the kitchens at Thyme Out in Didsbury for 10 years, and sometimes having to turn away business due to lack of space and preparation facilities, the time came to expand the catering operation into new premises. Now preparing and overseeing all Thyme Outside orders from a dedicated catering kitchen in Heaton Mersey, things have gone from strength to strength. With greater capacity, state of the art facilities, office space and a tasting room, Thyme Outside is now better placed to serve both existing and new clients.

Gabriella Taylor

Southampton’s Gabriella Taylor has enjoyed a breakthrough year already in 2018, winning three ITF Pro Circuit events in Australia, the $25,000 Launceston in early February, the $25,000 Perth in late February and the $25,000 Mildura in March and achieving a career-high ranking of 171 in May. Despite training in Marbella, Spain the 21-year-old claims grass is her favourite surface and will be looking forward to getting the lawns of The Northern under feet. In 2017 Taylor reached the quarter-final at the Manchester Trophy, narrowly losing out to eventual finalist Aleksandra Krunic.

#BACKTHEBRITS Naomi Broady

A proud Mancunian, our poster star Naomi Broady is currently ranked 120 in the world rankings and has had a successful 2018, winning her first WTA Tour doubles title in Mexico in April. The Northern is Naomi’s home club and when she’s not on the road her home is just down the road in Stockport. Grass suits Naomi’s game perfectly and her booming serve helped propel her to the semifinals at the Manchester Trophy last year. We’ll all be cheering for her to go one further in 2018.

Great Britain’s players likely to appear in the Fuzion 100 Trophy Series

Harriet Dart

Katie Boulter

Leicestershire’s Katie Boulter first made the tennis world take notice when she reached the final of the 2014 Australian Open junior doubles event. Since then the 21-year-old has been making great strides up the rankings, from 2016 when she ended the year at 366 to year-end 2017 when she had risen to 199. Boulter’s great form has continued into 2018 when she came through qualifying to reach the main draw of the WTA’s Miami Open and followed up with two ITF Pro Circuit tournament wins in Portugal and Japan to reach a career-high ranking of 152 in May, the Brit also made her Fed Cup debut in February in Estonia.

Londoner Harriet Dart has not been without setbacks in her career, a very talented junior she was progressing well when in October 2015 a foot injury forced her out of tennis for six months. In September 2016 she suffered a serious hip injury and in January 2017 she contracted pneumonia, before making her comeback in March. However, hopefully her bad luck is behind her and since her return in 2017 she claimed her third ITF Pro Circuit singles title at $15,000 Istanbul and reached the semi-finals of the Aegon Surbiton Trophy. In April 2018 she added another singles title at the $25,000 Altenkirchen in Turkey as well as the doubles title and reached a career high ranking of 194 in May.

Katie Swan

Bristol’s Katie Swan has been one to watch since 2013 when she began competing in junior tournaments in the Caribbean, South America and the USA. Her first junior doubles title came in June that year in El Salvador. The 20-year-old went on to reach No.2 in the ITF Junior Rankings and in 2015 made it to the final of the Australian Open junior singles event. The same year she went on to win her first two ITF pro-circuit titles, the $10,000 Sharm El Sheikh and $10,000 Madrid. In 2016 Swan became Britain's youngest ever Fed Cup player and secured her first WTA main draw victory at 2016 Hawaii Open. Since then she has won a further three ITF Pro Circuit events, reached a career high ranking of 238 in May and been signed to Andy Murray’s 77 Sports Management agency.

thenorthern.co.uk

Katy Dunne

Katy Dunne began playing tennis aged five at her local tennis club in St Albans, Hertfordshire and as a junior represented Great Britain in consecutive age groups from 12U to 18U, winning the 16U AEGON British Junior National Championships in 2010. Since those early years she has made steady progress up the rankings and in 2017 claimed her first $60,000 ITF Pro-Circuit doubles title with Tammi Patterson. In May 2018 Katy reached a career high singles ranking of world number 214.

BRITISH TENNIS AWARDS The British Tennis Awards celebrate the achievements made by outstanding individuals and venues in British Tennis throughout the past year. They present us all with a great opportunity to say thank you to everyone in the clubs, parks, schools and community venues within England, Scotland and Wales who give so much to our sport. British Tennis includes the many thousands of inspirational individuals involved in tennis, dedicating their precious time and energy; 25,000 volunteers, 4,400 coaches and 940 officials. The awards highlight the incredible achievements of some 20,000 schools, 2,700 clubs and over 9,700 LTA approved tournaments. The extraordinary contribution of these individuals and venues helps to bring fans and players closer to the game we all love.

Not only are we recognising the generous time that our award winners give to us, but also the genuine impact they make to tennis, enriching people’s lives and making it possible to achieve the LTA’s mission of getting more people playing more often.

Being recognised through the British Tennis Awards means so much to the people who win; at every single stage of the process. So think of someone you know, someone who has encouraged, motivated, inspired or supported you in the past year, and nominate them for next years awards. It is really easy and it will mean more to them than you might think.

2017 CHAMPIONS

2017 Singles Champion - Zarina Diyas Kazakhstan’s Zarina Diyas has very fond memories of Manchester and has a lot to thank the Manchester Trophy for. The 2017 singles title at the Manchester Trophy signalled the start of a meteoric rise back up the rankings to a current position of 53 following a six month injury lay-off due to wrist surgery in 2016. The twenty four year old began last year’s tournament ranked 207 despite having previously reached a career high ranking of 31 in 2015. Following her win in the Manchester final against Serbia’s Alexandra Krunic….. her ranking rose to 133 and the award of a much coveted Wild Card into the Singles Main Draw at The Championships, Wimbledon gave her an additional boost that she capitalised on, reaching the third round at the All England Club, eventually losing out to Croatia’s Petra Martic 67(6) 16.

50

thenorthern.co.uk

Success continued in 2017 at the Japan Open where Diyas came through qualifying to reach the main draw and went on to score victories against higher-ranked players such as local favourite Misaki Doi, top 30 player Zhang Shuai, compatriot Yulia Putintseva and defending champion Christina McHale to reach final. She eventually beat fellow qualifier Miyu Kato 6-2, 7-5 to win her first ever WTA title.

2018 has continued in a similar vein with strong performances at WTA events in Dubai, Miami and Stuttgart, including a win over Grand Slam champion and former World No.2 Svetlana Kuznetsova, all of which have seen the Kazakh re-establish herself firmly back in the top 100 and heading higher all the time. We can say it all started here at The Northern!

2017 Singles Runner Up - Aleksandra Krunic

Serbia’s Aleksandra Krunic is another player who has not looked back since the final of the 2017 Manchester Trophy. The Serb returned to the Top 100 for the first time since 2015 following her final appearance in Manchester and has continued to progress up the rankings to her current position on 47. Along the way the twenty-five-year old has scored wins over Wimbledon Champion Garbine Muguruza in Brisbane, Australia in December and Great Britain’s Wimbledon semi-finalist Johanna Konta in the first round of the 2017 US Open.

2017 Doubles Champions - Magdalena Frech & An-Sophie Mestach

The 2017 Manchester Trophy Doubles Championships Magdalena Frech from Poland and An-Sophie Mestach from Belgium had never played together before arriving at The Northern last year. However much to their own surprise they progressed to the final defeating the second seeds in the first round and then overcoming higher ranked opposition in the final. Despite not having the opportunity to play together again both Frech and Mestach have gone on to achieve further success, Mestach winning two further doubles titles, one in Turkey and a second in Las Vegas alongside Great Britain’s Laura Robson. Frech has achieved singles success winning two titles back-to-back in Germany in August 2017.
