VISIONQUEST - PYROCLASTICFLOW Who doesn’t think gangs are intimidating? They have power in numbers and most are armed and ready to make a killing - be it in cash or cold blood. An ostensibly bogus mob mentality and tendency to shrug off or snuff out anyone outside of their circle are also at the core of their ethos. So, while Visionquest, consisting of the young and talented producers Seth Troxler, Ryan Crosson, Lee Curtiss, and Shaun Reeves is slightly intimidating, reasons for this are more due to musical prowess and enduring friendship bonds rather than cracked-out crew outfitted in one colour looking to come up mega hard or murder their enemies. The four Detroit natives are pumping life into the veins of house + techno music through their likeminded, incendiary vision for fun and radical progression in a scene so easily subject to stagnation. Witnessing Visionquest in action is a volcanic eruption
16
fueled by the bass drum in the magma chamber and the dizzying melodic overlays carrying through in their molten lava flow. A healthy dose of Berlin-imbued debauchery, which is Visionquest’s base city, playful party antics, and the laying down of tunes that are so emotive, spiritual, and engaging in nature that they bring people back to where it should always be - the heart - is the realness that these dudes create. There’s an energetic and uplifting spirit to their approach and a pleasant unpredictability in their sets that is particularly refreshing in a time when much music in the respective genre is driven by soulless bass pumps and droning, druggy loops. They’re an innovative and exciting new breed of DJ/producers equipped with eccentric personalities and razor-sharp methods to their madness. Last year their remix of Kiki’s ‘Good Voodoo’ on BPitch Control was one of the summer’s
biggest underground hits and together they have released tracks on leading labels like Crosstown Rebels, Spectral Sound, Get Physical, Circus Company, Supplement Facts, Wolf+Lamb, Wagon Repair and Minus. Both individually and together they play regularly at clubs the world over like Fabric (London), Watergate (Berlin), Cocoon (Frankfurt) and Circoloco@Dc10 (Ibiza) as well as holding their weekly ‘Soulshower’ residency at Club Der Visonaere in Berlin. Thriving off of 10 years of organising and playing parties, deeprooted friendship, and a merging of different musical backgrounds and tastes into their one of a kind sound, Visionquest strides into the future on raw enthusiasm and passion for what they make and play. Hardly an imposing gang of hooligan technoheads, finally - the cooly understated tribe of visionaries has arrived.

dining out GOOD FOODS CAN BE FOUND IN MEMORY LANE CLEAR CAFE VIENNA CAFE
Experience organic, delicious, pure and natural elements from head to toe, step your foot into Clear Café, but leave your footwear at the door. Filled with Ubudian ‘alternative’ people, you feel like saying Namaste instead of Hello here. This wooden rustic cafe is a must try. Their menu is divided into three sections: Vegetarian, Vegan, and Raw. Not just serving healthy foods with an edge, this place is also forbidding smoking inside the restaurant, and alcohol is not listed in their glossary. But you won’t need those as their full range of Asian, Mexican, and European inspired foods are so tasty and creative, you would appreciate them until your last bite. Try Sunshine Tuna or Marinated Prawn Quesadillas if you’re into sea food, or Love Burger and Lifefood Pizza if you want to have healthier express foods among other interesting fusion cooking. Drink list from earthy water infusions to juices and selection of teas, kombucha, and to the most ‘innovative’ drink: Chocolate Butterfly; blended with a mix of peanut butter in it and tastes surprisingly good! And their desserts, strawberry cheesecake and raw chocolate cake will melt in your throat chakra to give you an organic oral orgasm! Style and delicacies meets healthy food. Vienna café opened in October 2009, and it’s been offering nothing but beauty, homey, cozy, artsy, and intellectual touch for their food and atmosphere. Obviously came from the land of the Sound of Music, this café is very comforting with their vintage style as you may feel sitting in an Austrian cafe where the artists and business people randomly hang out to enjoy sip of coffee or just to stimulate creativity. They have long list of breakfast menu. ‘The Austrian’ is probably the most authentic set, consist of 3 scrambled eggs with onion, peppers, ham and pumpkin seed oil served with a basket of homemade breads. The desserts are better be tasted than read (if you’re not familiar with Austrian term that is!), Kaiserschmarn is yummilicious cut up sugared pancake with apple puree, and Eispalatschinken is pancake filled with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. Every Sunday from 10 am to 1 pm, Vienna café organize nude model drawing class with an instructor. Everyone can walk in to join and feel free to express your inner artist on paper. WARUNG PULAU KELAPA
It’s a perfect ‘Tempoe Doeloe’ Indonesian restaurant inside a warm wooden tekuk lulang (antique Java house). You mainly find Indonesian mains from East Java region, such as pecel blitar, sayur lodeh, soto ayam kampung, and rujak petis. Quite delightful vintage varieties you can enjoy here with reasonable price range, delivered by friendly kebaya dressed staffs. As simple as it may sound, nasi goreng is the best seller here as they describe its taste will dissolve slowly in your mouth leaving unforgettable traditional richness sensation. And to close your culinary experience, try es kiatna medan, a special drink made of golden orange and spice syrup with unique and exquisite combination of tastes: sweet-sour-salty. ARENA PUB & RESTAURANT
There’s something vintage about Arena, or more likely… authentic! Since first opened in 1994, it’s still standing and happening for most carnivores, serving many styles of sizzling and tasty steaks, chops, ribs, barbecued, and roasted from all over the world; American, European, Australian, and Asian. Famous among the Dutch community in Sanur -and the locals too, Arena’s wide arena is divided into 90’s looking decorated restaurant, butch-feeling bar serving various world’s beers with sport TV channel on big screens, and an area with a pool table. Their portion is huge! And the prices are mainly reasonable. Drop your diet restriction and lavish your gluttony on Hut Spot met Gehaktbal, Schweine Haxe, Bangers & Mash Aussie Sausages, Angus Beef Rib Roast Steak, and Zwiebelrost Braten among other interesting offers from their meat lovers menu. BIASA ArtSpace introduces Imago Ludens, an exhibition featuring the works of Cahyo Basuki Yopi. By presenting his first solo exhibition BIASA ArtSpace points at exploring the work and research recently undertaken by the youngest generation of Yogyakartabased artists. In fact, Yopi comes from the aesthetic lesson of Ugo Untoro with whom he shares that subjective language leading him to project the perception of life within his own imaginary landscape, on the trail of the unknown man, and somehow seeking to define himself and the outside world in relation to the mystery of the inner-self. In Yopi’s visionary universe an airplane becomes a colorful hobbyhorse, spirals and cylinders develop into imaginary vehicles as fantasy transporters to our self, or a household flat-iron is metamorphosed into a nailed medieval instrument of torture that engages both language and imagination. Thus the artist fabricates his own Cabinet of Wonders by manufacturing ready-made toys from the assemblage of different elements and materials that include wood, metal, paper, etc. In such a way, Yopi generates an inexhaustible imaginary anthology in which emotions and rationality merge into fantasy objects 20

REINVENTION OF PASSION Design is always about new invention. The wheel keep rolling and everything required to be refreshed in order not to be called yesterday. An understanding of how the design elements work with the method of presentation, and how to manipulate them, enables designer to create different visual effect each time. That is no different with what the dynamic duo husband and wife, Helmi and Gina, brought to their pop-deco gallery, Passion. Definitely stand out from any typical modern and cultural gallery you may ever find, Passion style is rather authentic and eclectic. It may come across looking bourjois, like a luxurious pad with a drop of kitsch. The first thing I noticed in this space is a very unusual statue of life size pink poodle sitting gracefully at the main display area. Following behind are mini statues from different animals like bulls, horses, lions, goats and rabbits in such animated shapes; very fluid with a hint of futuristic. These entire animals replica are alive, polished in vibrant colors and made with unusual materials. And to add more surprise, these elements come together with strong Mediterranean infusion; folkloric carpet, vintage inspired chairs, decorative carving and print home decor in shiny lacquer finishing. Helmi is Tunisian and Gina is Indonesian, together they merge the Indonesian technique and materials with Tunisian elements of design. The result is totally out of the box, modern baroque meets tropical lounge meets futuristic pop. But there’s something about this place that despite strong fusion of different elements, it feels quite like a home. The creative flair is carried by mixing Gina’s decorative eye with Helmi’s passion of art. The man is been living a colorful life as a performing actor, choreographer, dancer, theatrical artist, show director and hotelier since the glamonstrous 80’s era. Passion is the reinvention of love and the current transformation of what they’d like to experience today, designing their passion at the same time reflecting their personal interest in interior zoo. That’s enough to answer my question on why most things that I found here are such one of a special kind! PASSION, Jl. Dewi Sri No.15, Sunset Road, Kuta, Bali 80361, 0361-9627281, www.passion4bali.com

Now despite her spotlight is dimmed a little bit, we will not forget her quirky vintage Boy George inspired look that was totally refreshing the world of style. 2. Nicole Richie Made in: US Age: 30 What about: The adopted daughter of a vintage pop star, Lionel Richie, crawling from bad-ass-chickdom into becoming a graceful super stylish socialite, married a rock star, has two babies, and turned author, fashion and jewelry designer. What else can you ask for more? 3. Alexa Chung Made in: UK Age: 28 What about: A mix breed of English and Chinese has so much under her belt, a model, a TV presenter, and a contributing editor at British Vogue. Carey Mulligan Made in: UK Age: 26 What about: Speaking about transformation, this pixie haired starlet knows how to morph from a mediocre girl next door into a new star to watch. And let’s not forget her acting performances that lead her to several movie award nominations. 5. Chloe Sevigny Made in: US Age: 37 What about: Known for her quirky style, she’s undoubtedly one talented actress with certain vintage elements as an indie lesbian in Boys Don’t Cry to constant surprising twisted appearances on the red carpet. 6. Sienna Miller Made in: UK Age: 30 What about: The ultimate boho girl, on and off with British actors, from the charming Mr. Jude Law to the surprising Mr. Rhys Ifans. Noticeably stylish, better known for rather than her acting, she’s expanding into fashion designing for Pepe Jeans, with a line called Telve8Twelve.
7. Irina Lazareanu Made in: Romania Age: 29 What about: A model with too much word to say, in a good way though! Super ‘intimate’ with Kate Moss, she even got engaged to Kate’s ex badboy boyfriend, Pete Doherty. She’s a fashion muse with sparkling personality and rock-and-roll style who moved on to music career. 8. Kate Moss Made in: UK Age: 37 What about: Now who can leave this page without including Kate Moss, the first petite supermodel who has bigger than life stories and scandals? Definitely edgier, that’s what makes her more noticeable and memorable than her sis. 11. Georgia Jagger Made in: UK Age: 19 What about: The name is the reason on why she has such trademark “family lips”. Drop the rock star’s daughter status, with a look that slightly a resemblance of Brigitte Bardot with Lauren Hutton’s gap teeth, she hog the spot within one pout. 12. Michelle Williams Made in: US Age: 31 What about: From Dawson’s Creek to nominations for Best Actress. From geek to chic. A widow of Heath Ledger and rather a quiet actress, she’s also a full time mother with style.

MISS KITTY’S VINTAGE RE-COLLECTION MEMORIES FROM A NOT SO DISTANT PAST IN THE LIFE OF OUR OWN SEX GODDESS AND GURU EXTRAORDINAIRE WORDS MISS KITTY
descended on the catwalk directly from hell almost two decades the army of later. top model bitches W
hen Diaz told me he was putting together The Vintage issue for I-Magazine and wanted me to contribute some life stories, I was highly offended. You can never ask a girl to publicly reveal her age or give away the slightest hint for the Harvard graduate to right guess how old she is. Honestly, if anyone told me the first decade of the new millennium were vintage years I would slap their tits with my Kiki de Montparnasse branded whip! So, are we talking about the austere Nineties? The flamboyant Eighties? The punkish Seventies? Or the glorious Sixties? My vision is all blurry now… a 3,5 kg lanky baby girl had just come into the world. I can’t go that far behind…
Circa late 1970’s
If you’re reading this and you’re less than 30 well, sorry darling, you will not have a first hand experience of the late Seventies. When LIFE was just excessive! In those days, I was modeling in Milan with the likes of Pat Cleveland, Iman and Jerry Hall (bless them!) before

incredibly padded shoulder – the type Joan Collins would wear in Dynasty– high heels and no underwear. I had just left a photo shoot and was walking back to my pad in Brera when my eyes caught Brad, a twenty-something guy from New York. Brad was the kind of guy all girls dream of having: a natural swimmer body, a killer smile and hands that would make the best masseur shy away in shame. I followed him to the Big Apple and I discovered later, his charms had gotten him a job in a very prestigious New York club: he was a professional stripper, you know the kind, the one that is normally assaulted by bunches of screaming women – and sometimes men, depending on the night – who enjoy a handful of “le paquet” by stuffing dollar notes into his skimpy bikini. I’m not normally jealous of my lovers but I challenge any women out there to patiently sit at home waiting for HIM to finish his job thinking that by the time he gets back his nether region has been touched by hundreds of sweaty, needy, wrinkled hands. It was too much even for me.
Circa 1980’s
Gianni and Donatella (Versace), Domenico and Stefano (Dolce and Gabbana), among others, were just starting and the general feeling was that everything was possible, success was easy and so was abundance, whether it took the form of money, drugs or sex partners.
So, there I was, in New York City at its best. And it was not long before I had a close encounter with my anal-yst, Henry. That’s right, you heard it well. It’s New York, what do you expect? Do you know anyone who doesn’t see a shrink there? I, for a minute, thought I would volunteer to create the “A Shrink for Every New Yorker Fund”!
Imagine: me walking down via Montenapoleone in a business suit with
Henry was a special shrink though. He liked to anal-yse me in the comfort of his bedroom.
attracted to him because of his ‘muladhara’ interest in chakra or tantric sex. thereabouts. Wait, it’s not what you think! Of course we did have sex but, he had some kind of weird “deformation professionelle” as the French call it: his obsession with work would result in love-making dressed with orders to talk about myself, the relationship with my mother, my father, my younger sister. To top it up, Henry had a penchant for having protruding objects inserted into his, ehm… what you may call it,
By me! When it happened the first time, he asked me politely with embarrassment and I played along.
He assured me that he was not gay and had no interest in trying with a flesh banana. Anything within reach that was cylindrical and would fit instantly became a sex toy. Every week I’d go to sex shops and find new toys to quench his thirst for sucking up the world from his lower mouth! And I did it out of love. ‘Till I realized that his compulsive obsession was overtaking everything else in our relationship. One freezing cold New York winter morning, I decided to leave him with a note wrapped around a cucumber, to make sure he’d find it, and slipped out of his penthouse in the Upper East. I got a modeling job in Madrid and left New York afterward.
Circa early 1990’s
I was attending Almodovar’s parties with the rest of Pedro’s gang: Alaska, Bibi, Carmen and the hot boy from Malaga who would later make it big in the States. At one party, I was chatting to the Duchess of Alba when Carlos lit up my cigarette. Carlos was half British-half Spanish, his father had been a secret agent for the British Government, escaped from the Nazis with the help of the British Embassy in Spain.
I was
He was a frequent traveler to Rajasthan in India where he had been initiated to yoga, meditation and tantric practices. I was fascinated by someone who wanted to connect with me at a deeper level. He soon became my guru. We looked stunning together, in our kaftans and turbans. It was in one of those trips to India that I decided to leave him and the ashram where we were staying. He was perfectly happy to be inebriated by the spirit of togetherness that he had found there where group sex and cosmic love were dominant. I was just one of the many. In fact, he didn’t even bat an eyelid when I told him I was moving out.
Circa mid -1990s…
In the two years that we were together we traveled to many places and he showered me with gifts.
But something was missing. I felt like a part of me was dead.
My social life was non-existent; we were so much into each other that we had forgotten about the world outside. And the world came knocking on my door, one stormy and rainy Tuesday. Gianni had been shot dead outside his Miami house. I packed a small suitcase and flew to the US to be with his family. It was 1997. At the funeral I met Karim…But, wait! That’s too recent to be considered “vintage”!
And I found myself jetting over to Hong Kong, nouvelle Suzie Wong in town. Life was sweet in Lan Kwai Fong, the nightspot area. Coincidentally, in a bar called “La Dolce Vita”, one night I was approached by a famous local photographer, Robert. Robert was halfChinese half Portuguese from Macao (“le mix c’est chic”, to paraphrase the great band ‘The Chic’… Can it get anymore vintage than this?). The next day he invited me for lunch at his mansion in Repulse Bay and sent his Rolls to pick me up. Once in the house I had to use the ladies and I was very intrigued by the little round mirror hanging at an angle above the WC. Now, sitting down as a civilized lady it wouldn’t serve any purpose but what would do that for the standing Mannekepis??? Would that be used to reinforce his manhood or help him hit the bowl right in the center? I avoided the subject.

Ten Ways to avoid being A ‘Vintage’ Superstar There’s a tweaking and flinching feeling when our name, which used to be the headliner, shifts away from front page to somewhere near the obituaries. Moving to the next level of “maturity” can be a hard-fought thing. Some embrace it gracefully, but what if you’ve rocketed to fame and then soon forgotten, but still refuse to have your name carved on the has-been gravestone? Would you consider a “return”? Tiffany, a teen idol from the 80’s tried to make a comeback by posing nude for Playboy. Sadly, no one gave a damn about the exhibition of her “fire floss”. God bless your hair colorist, girl. And I love you, NKOTB, as we danced to your tunes back in our high school uniforms, but sorry - today it’s more about Glee, OK? Before our star’s popularity is washed away, there are ways to preserve that shining factor. Especially for those who are not married to a rich partner, nor morphed into socialite-dom as the later stage of stardom. Some approach may sound similar to what occurs here in our pop culture society. Learn from the Hollywood steps to stay memorable, either in your regional fan club basis or just in your Facebook circle. 1. Have your own TV reality show Be it quality or trashy, audiences love to be entertained by watching their idols’ animated lives as weird newlyweds, giving breakup tips, or living in the fabulous lane. Hello Shannen Doherty and Kimora! 2. Be the TV comedy series comeback queen (as long as luck is with you) Teri Hatcher turned her desperation into not so Desperate Housewives, and Brooke Shield moved from quiet Blue Lagoon to busy Lipstick Jungle.
68
3. Be the judge for a TV talent contest As the old saying goes, “Those who can’t do, teach.” What else could be better than to use your leftover fame or skill to bitch out contestant hopefuls of fierce talent competitions? Agree, Paula Abdul and Janice Dickinson? 4. Be a designer for lines of fashion or accessories This is more a way to maintain cash flow rather than a comeback move. Many celebrities extend their names and tastes into retail kingdom. High five, J-Lo, MaryKate and Ashley Olsen. 5. Have a scandalous sex or drunk videotape on the Internet That sounds easy, the only thing you need is low self-esteem and super-thick skin. Right, Paris Hilton and David Hasselhoff? 6. Have a painful divorce Despite being tearful, a nasty divorce can result in another chance at front page coverage. Share a box of tissues with Pamela Anderson and Denise Richards. 7. Be a yo-yo dieter, balloon up and soon get bony again Flabby up yourself and then three months later surprise your fans with the new slim fit you! Drop that donut now, Janet Jackson and Kristie Alley! 8. Be a politician, social activist, UN goodwill ambassador or something Turning star status into the world of conservative suits will make politics nothing but sexy. Let’s march with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Geri Halliwell. 9. Get involved in philanthropic activities Who said looking fabulous can only be obtained on the red carpet? Drew Barrymore
and Heather “ex-McCartney” Mills love to be photographed generously at charity events! 10. Change your relationship status every week in your Facebook profile Sure, everyone can do this, as you probably get sick of witnessing it on your Facebook newsfeeds lately. One outstanding metamorphosis from a fashion icon who made a comeback in style as reassured, graceful and successful entrepreneur is Christy Turlington, an 80’s supermodel who quit her model-dom in 1994 while then BFF Linda Evangelista was still unwilling to get out of bed for less than a thousand dollars. Fashionistas had a hunch that Christy left the runway too soon, but the woman pursued higher studies at NYU and reinvented herself years later as a prominent voice of yoga, followed by the launch of her ayurvedic skincare line Sundari and her yoga apparel line Nuala. Darn, isn’t it privileged of her while often we still catch her notorious fellow model Naomi Campbell partying up a storm with snow “accidentally” stuck in her nose? Perhaps the best way to be a memorable vintage star is we must unplug our fame cable before the light gets dimmer, eh Has-Been-ers? As Madonna said, “Reinvent yourself” (…before you turn into a pumpkin!)

NO NUKES!!! NUCLEAR PLANTS ARE INCREDIBLY COMPLEX TECHNOLOGICAL DEVICES FOR LOCATING EARTHQUAKE FAULTS. DAVID BROWER. News stories from around the world seem to be really giving the 2012 doomsayers plenty of material which they can claim as evidence that the end of the world as predicted in the Mayan calendar is bearing down upon us. We are witnessing a major geopolitical change in the Middle East/ North Africa where courageous protestors have brought down the dictatorial governments of Egypt and Tunisia. There is major civil unrest happening in Bahrain and Yemen which looks like it could have the potential to spill over into Saudi Arabia and other gulf states where populations are calling for the expulsion of corrupt entrenched governments and monarchies. We could also be witnessing what appears to be the start of a bloody civil war in Libya with NATO starting to enforce a no fly zone. This has been thrown into the mix of the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the drone attacks in Pakistan which seem to be weekly killing innocents and all the saber rattling going on in the US in regards to Iran, and let’s not overlook the ongoing plight of the Palestinians and Israelis continuing to kill each other in the name of religion and over land. The west is struggling to come out of the worst economic recession since the 30’s great depression, with many commentators saying that a double dip recession is likely or even worse, that we could be leading into another depression. Food prices are at record highs which many believe was one of the motivating factors leading to the unrest in the Middle East and North Africa. All this turmoil in these oil rich states will no doubt send oil prices up leading to a negative flow on effect for all the economies of the world resulting in a worrying scenario for a sustained global economic recovery. However, all these appear almost minor compared to the tragedy unfolding in Japan where nature’s fury has unleashed destruction on an apocalyptic scale. The footage of the Tsunami plowing down anything in its path, tossing cars and trucks

about like Lego toys, wiping out anything that stood in its way was depressingly frightening to view. It is almost like watching scenes from a disaster movie with incredible realistic special effects, but this is a film that is all too horribly real, one can only imagine the horror felt by the poor people caught this watery wall of death, or how survivors now have to deal with the absolute destruction of all their worldly possessions. It seems though that the real horror of all this destruction and loss of life is only just beginning with the melt down of a number of nuclear power reactors, most notably the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear reactor which is still in the danger zone and far from being brought under control. It is too early to determine the scale of this tragedy and what the long term effects due to radiation will be, but the latest reports seem to be painting a frightening bleak picture. The idea of an invisible poison that can be released by a meltdown must have a terrifying aspect to the Japanese psyche after experiencing these effects first hand after the atomic bombs that ended the Second World War only a generation ago. Internationally, the pro nuclear lobbyers were very quick to jump to the defense of their industry and its safety record even before the true picture of what was actually unfolding on the ground. Many were loudly claiming this incident should not put people of the idea of nuclear power as it is SAFE, CLEAN & GREEN. Boris Johnson even wrote that the preachers and moralizers of the Anti Nuke movement were taking advantage of a situation and they were being reactionaries (The Times/ The Age 15.03.2011). Brendan O’Neill wrote in The Australian (15.03.2011) to defend the safety of the nuclear industry and that the reactor Fukushima Daiichi had safety checks that would stop any major disaster from occurring, and that the so called left media were again exaggerating the threat posed.
Ironically when I had finished reading this article The Australian website had been updated with the front page claiming that there had been a dramatic escalation in the escape of harmful radiation and that levels were now high enough to be a major danger to people’s health. Good one Brendan! It does get a bit tiresome when this industry continually boasts its green safety attributes when it is an industry which has to bury its toxic waste (which stays toxic for thousands of years) underground and can kill thousands if there is an accident or malfunction, very safe and green? If the Egyptians who built the pyramids had used nuclear power we would still be living with the toxic waste it produced today, is this a legacy we wish to leave our future generations? As I write it appears that this nuclear disaster is going to be almost on the same scale as the Chernobyl meltdown in the Ukraine. Even taking this into account the Australian pro nuclear right wing columnist Andrew Bolt when defending the nuclear power industry claimed on the ABC’s television program, ‘Insiders’ that only about 50 people lost their lives with the Chernobyl explosion and meltdown (the official figure is 57 due to the initial blast). Lies, lies and statistics hey, for he did not go on to mention that more than 300,000 people had to be resettled, or that a 2002 study undertaken by the UN’s Committee of the effects of atomic radiation found that up to 4000 people had been diagnosed with cancer due to radiation exposure. Even these figures seem conservative as a book published in 2010 by the New York Academy of Sciences, ‘Chernobyl: Consequences of catastrophe for the people and environment claims that the death toll from Chernobyl at around 985,000 due to radiation levels, much higher than what the Soviet government claimed at the time. In Australia, Nuclear power has always been an issue surrounded by controversy with

the majority of the population seemingly against the idea; this is despite the belief that Australia has at least up to 50% of the world’s uranium. In recent years there has definitely been a push by the Business Council of Australia joining forces with the nuclear power lobby and the powerful mining industry telling the Australian public that nuclear power is essential for future population and economic growth. Australia is one of the most seismically stable places on the globe; it has a stable transparent system of government and is a wealthy modern country with minimal corruption and a small population, yet the idea of nuclear power plants finds little support amongst the majority of the population due to concerns of accidents and the toxic waste. Indonesia is one of the most unstable seismatic countries on earth with earthquakes or tremors seemingly almost a daily occurrence. In recent years has suffered major earthquakes and the resulting Tsunami’s which have killed 100’s of thousands. Although the government is now democratically elected, Indonesia still has a long way to go before it could be classed as stable and transparent, the level of corruption is still rated as one of the highest in the world through every level of government and private industry. Java is one of the most densely populated spots on earth. Yet, even with all these factors and after the tragedy unfolding in Japan, Indonesia is still determined to go ahead with their nuclear program. Indonesia has been undergoing feasibility studies for nuclear power since 1954 and became a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in 1957. After various studies, the latest being in 2002 which was prepared by the National Atomic Energy Agency (BATAN) and assisted by the IAEA have all concluded that Indonesia should go ahead with the construction of a nuclear power plant, the site mentioned for a proposed plant is the Muria Peninsula in Central Java (The Jakarta Post 15/03/2011). Indonesia, especially Java has huge energy needs for its 135 million inhabitants which consumes more than 80% of the nation’s electricity but has no natural resources of its own and has to import most of its energy requirements from other regions or overseas. Spokesman for the Indonesian National Nuclear Energy Agency has stated that despite the risks and concerns posed by the nuclear crisis in Japan, that he is far more concerned about the country’s energy
needs in the near future. He claimed that the public’s safety will be ensured as the plants will be built outside of earthquake zones and in accordance with IAEA guidelines. However, Richard Tanner, a nuclear safety and security researcher at the Nautilus Institute in Melbourne states ”the proposed site for a nuclear power plant on the Muria Peninsula off the north coast of Java is a high risk location. Firstly, it is on the edge of a volcano. Secondly, there are seismic risks in the area. Thirdly, the planning for the Muria plant has been based on Japanese earthquake guidelines of 30 years ago” (www.voanews.com). One can only imagine in horror the case of a major nuclear accident in Java being the most densely populated spot on earth. Not even taking into account the risks posed by the nuclear power industry, the idea that it supplies cheap energy is debatable as the industry generally needs huge initial capital investment which is often loaned by governments (tax payers) and insurance companies will not cover Nuclear power plants, so if there is a incident again the tax payers are liable. Since its inception more than 50 years ago, the U.S. nuclear power industry has been propped up by a generous array of government subsidies that have supported its development and operations. Despite that support, the industry is still not economically viable, according to a report released by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS). The report, "Nuclear Power: Still Not Viable Without Subsidies," found that more than 30 subsidies have supported every stage of the nuclear fuel cycle, from uranium mining to long-term waste storage. Added together, these subsidies often have exceeded the average market price of the power produced."Despite the fact that the nuclear power industry has benefited from decades of government support, the technology is still uneconomic, so the industry is demanding a lot more from taxpayers to build new reactors," said Ellen Vancko, manager of UCS's Nuclear Energy and Climate Change Project (www. nuclearpowerdaily.com).
Yucca Mountains in Nevada. The expense of storage really cannot be accurately estimated as the waste is with us forever! The energy needs of the global economy will continue to rise and the traditional energy sources of coal and oil will need to be replaced over time as they will become scarcer and eventually run out, never mind the contribution they make towards Co2 released into the atmosphere which is the primary cause of global climate change. However nuclear power is not the answer as the costs and risks are just too high. Industry and government have to invest in clean renewable energy technologies to meet future needs, although we may not have the technology yet, with investment and research I am sure we will, we have to. PEACE.
5 good reasons against Nuclear power: 1. Nuclear energy is not a fast enough response to climate change as reactors take too long to build. 2. They are too expensive and rely on government subsidies, and insurance companies will not insure nuclear reactors. 3. Waste, after 55 years of nuclear power there is still no safe way to permanently manage or store the toxic radioactive waste. 4. Weapons, nuclear power programs help countries gain the ability to produce nuclear weapons. There is also the rogue state factor coup etc, or the use by terrorist groups. 5. Renewable green energy. The nuclear industry with its massive government subsidies makes it difficult for competing clean renewable energy sources to enter the market. It creates an unfair and unbalanced playing field. (The Age, Ian Lowe. 20/03/2011)
Nuclear waste storage is perhaps the biggest expense faced by the nuclear power industry as any viable long term storage solution has yet to be found, mainly because the time period for storage runs into thousands of years. Some plans and methods for storage include burying the waste under the sea, burying it underground or shooting it into space. Generally the most accepted option is burying it underground in geological stable areas such as the USA’s storage area in the 71

WITNESS THE FEMALE ENERGY The Bali Spirit Festival 2011
It was almost like dying and being re-incarnated as myself again but in a slightly altered reality. All seemed familiar at first, but at second glance, I realized I was in heaven; full of clear-eyed light carrying goddesses. I quickly realized there is a strong feminine power emerging here in Bali. It’s nothing like the old cliché feminine movement of striving for equality, the measurement of, gauged against men. It’s about women rising to power within themselves, shining, glowing, resonating and bathing in their own feminine form completely detached from the constraints of a male patriarchal society.
