pressure causes nuclear reactions to melt down. It causes war and genocide. It causes world wide economic calamity and depression. It's the cause behind the columbine massacre. It causes sane men to get married to clinically insane women and for perfectly beautiful women to knife up their face and vomit bile in the name of perfection. Pressure caused Hiroshima. Pressure killed Amy Winehouse. Pressure gives me a hard on in the morning. Pressure to be the most creative I can possibly be. Macro pressure versus micro pressures. Acupressure on the muscles to release the pressure from your brain. Pressure to make this editors note readable, entertaining and make all you fuckers happy. Pressure to rock the vote. Pressure is in art and Fashion. Pressure is in love and sex. Pressure is everywhere, behind everything we do or want or say lets unravel this shit. Lets take a closer look at pressure.

bookband we are scientists - Rockin out Deus
Chris Cain
Keith Murray
Michael Tapper
16
Of course, they're not even really scientists. They’re just in a band called “We Are Scientists.” That’s right, they’re indie rock musicians, based out of New York. And last month they rocked out Deus with a live performance that coincided with Ozlem and Sewah's birthdays (if you don't know who they are, that's fine, this is about the band anyway). Global shoe giant, Macbeth brought them to Bali for what people are claiming as the best Deus concert since Wolfmother played there last year. Man, the standard of music seems to be getting better. Who knows, we may even have regular alternative events to electronic music before we know it. Yeah, I know what your thinking, don't slag off the DJs. But, I can't get rid of that little black patch of rock denim stitched to my heart. We Are Scientists formed in Berkeley, California in 2000. Originally formed of Keith Murray on drums, Chris Cain playing bass guitar and Scott Lamb providing vocals and guitar, before Michael Tapper became drummer and Keith became vocalist and guitarist. The band's breakthrough success came with their second album With Love and Squalor which sold 100,000 copies in the first 6 months. Their second success was with Brain Thrust Mastery which charted at 11 in the UK album chart, with two top 40 singles "After Hours" and "Chick Lit." Their fourth album, Barbara, was released in the UK on the 14th June 2010.

dining out BATTLE OF FLAVORS ACROSS THE REGION TULIP (TURKISH )
Don’t be fooled by its name, Tulip restaurant & lounge does not serves Dutch food. As a matter of fact, this well-known legendary Dutch flower originally came from Turkey. They were brought to Holland from Turkey in the 16th century. Anyway, to cut our history lesson today short, this new fancy dining in Jalan Petitenget is highly recommended! Their foods are seriously good, and their cold mezza gloriously brought to you as you arrived on your table, and you won’t be able to resist them. They come in good portions, deliciously tasty, and you can actually just munch some of them with their generous bread basket as your dinner. But don’t miss out the chance to taste their meat dishes, their recommendation is Tulip Kebab, but I would suggest for you and your peeps to share a bit of everything and taste the complexity of their culinary recipes. Their service is also very good, warm, friendly, helpful and accommodating. TULIP RESTAURANT & LOUNGE Jl. Petitenget No.69, Seminyak - Bali, 0361-7858585

KAZU-YA (WARUNG JEPANG)
We call this warung popularity because it’s so happening right now! Despite no signboard visible anywhere around this little hidden place, they never seem to be empty, always busy! Most foreigners come here to taste their fusion of warung foods with hints of Japanese and Italian flavor. Try their choices of basic Japanese like Fish Teriyaki, Chicken Katsu, Pork Tonkatsu, and Japanese Omelet to something more worldwide fusion like Tofu Burger, Green Curry Tempe, Chicken Cotoletta, Soy Lasagna, Spinach Croquette, and a whole lot of cooked vegetable varieties. You can even find lentils and soya beans as side dish here. Located in Jalan Drupadi, behind Queens Tandoor and before Golden Village, find it sizzles during lunch hours. You’d better hurry up though, otherwise you’ll miss their worth-try unique taste, and mind you it’s a warung on demand at the moment! WARUNG KAZU-YA Jl. Drupadi I No.4, Seminyak, 087862001474
LM LAOTA (HONG KONG BARBEQUE) WARUNG GEULIS (INDONESIAN HOME COOKING )
There’s a hint of little Hong Kong as you pass Sunset road right after Simpang Siur roundabout when you notice a restaurant with a line of round lanterns irradiate shimmering golden brown hanging roasted ducks on their counter display. You may find the basic essence of typical Chinese mix rice meals here –surprisingly no noodles though. Most of them contained with pork, char-siu and schezuan styles; even their burger made of traditional Chinese cooking pork meat. LM is a new expansion from Laota, the famous authentic Chinese restaurant in Tuban area. Compare to its previous predecessor, despite the meals are quite pleasant and fulfilling, their foods variety could’ve been better. LM HONGKONG BARBECUE Jl. Sunset Road No.3C, Kuta – Bali, 0361-763859
Look no further for delicious, pleasant, and lovely Indonesian home cooking meals. Warung Geulis is exactly represents the meaning of its name, food and beauty. Famous among Umalas expats, Warung Geulis is undoubtedly the answer for those who have taste for Indonesian flavor in classic atmosphere. As you step in to this homey warung in Umalas, you’ll feel much at peace like entering an authentic old-style Indonesian house. The seating arrangement in garden kind of setting makes it even more comfy to eat and meet. You can get your International breakfast set here from 8 am to tasty Indonesian lunch menu from their counter or order a la carte. Hit their Nasi Campur Istimewa or Nasi Goreng Istimewa if you come to feast your big hunger, or for you light eaters opt for Soto Ayam and Cap Cay. There are selection of sandwiches, burgers, steaks, soups and salads as well. Don’t forget to taste their light and enjoyable almond pudding and caramel pudding to give you the sweet taste before you leave. WARUNG GEULIS Jl. Bumbak 122, Umalas – Kerobokan, Bali, 0361-2734137

THIS IS A MAN's WORLD My life without pressure leads to complacency. And yeah, personally, I can’t stand complacency; it’s a depressing state of mind for us Gemini’s. Intrinsically, pressure drills through me from my will to succeed, striving for personal betterment, and a petty thirst to be different. Externally it knocks on the door to ask whether its her turn to use the bathroom, honoring debts, crazy deadlines, facing disaster and most of all, speed-humps (they are so symbolic of interfering with the natural flow of things). Subconsciously, I’m sure everything is operating just as it should. It doesn’t change the fact that it’s a lifelong struggle to deal with the cognitive and behavioral systems that constitute how I process thoughts and react to certain circumstances and situations. It’s frustrating. Not painful like passing kidney stones, more like a repetitive strain injury that won’t go away. It’s always there and is only annoying when it gets attention. But I‘ll keep striving for betterment because I enjoy it and because the pleasure grossly outweighs the pain. I could choose to be totally unconscious, but that too might lead to complacency and avoiding the frustration would be acting out of fear of confronting myself. Just being male has it’s own burden in the world of relationships and friendships. The order of intensity is irrelevant. Relationships seem to be a path to fulfillment without the need to complete me as an individual. But, it is kinda strange how the want to have and maintain intimate relations is always there. It’s almost innate. Procreate. Should I stay or should I go now? Should I hold onto that old-school male mentality that help shaped the crappier side of how we live and relate to one another, or should I embrace the art of letting go by standing outside the door of the mind and jumping through the window of the heart? Ok, that rhetorical question wasn’t even worth asking. Oh yeah, did I forget to mention I am single, so I have to ask, what kinda girl should I be with? Who would make a perfect match? Is the concept of marriage outdated, or am I just selfish? I still believe in my heart (it seems) that the right girl is out there, but then I question this also. Is that feeling real? Of course it’s real, I am feeling it. But is that constructed socially or is it instinctive? Am I following my heart or am I just thinking I am listening to my heart. Where’s the middle ground in all this? Oh my god… this manipulative little bastard child of a mind of mine, and the pressure it bestows upon me.

Who: Where: Ku De Ta When: August 3 to September 28 Meet-the-Artist Soiree: August 10 at 5:00 PM Contact: Beth@moduloprojects.com
This August and September, Modulo brings a little nakedness to the walls of Ku De Ta with her exhibit “Graphic Nudity.” The exhibit will feature a series of figurative nude paintings in Modulo’s characteristic geometric style, using shapes and angles with overlapping lines to convey form, depth, light and shadow. The works are a study in how the female body can be represented with a bare minimum of visual cues yet still be recognizable and even sensual. They explore not only physical nudity but also emotional nakedness as well: the hope and expectation yet vulnerability and insecurity felt when in love. “Graphic Nudity” is Modulo’s follow-up to her 2010 exhibit “Delusions of Order.” She was the featured artist in the June 2011 issue of I-Magazine, and is currently working on several commissions as well as planning an exhibit in Europe in early 2012. She has lived in Bali on and off for six years, and her paintings can be found in collections worldwide. 32

infra-red chakra scrubs If you’ve ever driven in heavy traffic, pet a Bali dog, brushed your teeth with tap water, swam on the ocean in the Kuta to Canggu region, or imbibed anything with name resembling ‘jungle juice’ then you need to visit the Wellness Spa. Located on Jalan Dyanapura, it is in the perfect spot to detox both after toxing and again after you retox. Let’s face it, our island isn’t a pristine environment, and life in paradise can be hectic and stressful at times. A team from I-Magazine descended upon the Wellness Spa late one afternoon, and by ten at night the post-spa high was beginning to fade after a few sangrias. Three hours postWellness I was already planning to pass out on the doorstep so I could paradoxically get back to some semblance of delicious normal as soon as possible in the morning. We indulged, nay, regaled in the infra-red and chakra balancing treatments. Wellness Spa offers a range of treatments such as scrubs, mani pedi’s, Ayurveda, hot stone massages, hair extensions and laser shit. First though, we were tested with an Electro Meridian Imager, which looked like a car battery hooked up to jumper cables attached to a computer. Turns out it was painless, and with a few clicks of the scanner it put out report on my meridians, yin and yang, energy reserve levels and other fascinating, useful, and dishearteningly unbalanced information. The ladies were gentle and professional, the ambiance was pristine and get-away exotica chic. The infa-red chamber heated up my core, and in addition to losing that last kilo in water weight, I had a post-sweat endorphin rush. The chakra balancing left me feeling centered and calm yet elevated. The I-Magazine team spent nearly an hour in the spa relaxing room afterwards sipping minty chlorophyll and chatting about life, energy, Burning Man, and arguing about who was going to get up first. I thought addiction only ran in half of my family, and I could be counted on as a co-dependant enabler. But the Wellness Spa. Well. Is there such a thing as infa-red chakra scrub detox rehab?

Alex valenzuela aka valence So your first fashion range in New York got snapped up pretty quick, when was that, and what happened? My first fashion range was Arlequin and based out of NewYork from 2004 onwards. We were producing in Argentina and had our showroom at M.A.O. PR. Within a month of having the showroom we had Britney Spears & Christina Aguilera interested in out collection. After our first runway show that year we had a steady base of celebrity clientele. We had a strong run for about five years and than split the brand up. You've had your designs shot by Dave La Chapelle. How was that experience? Me and my partners had a dream of David La Chapelle shooting our clothes but never really thought it would happen. One day we get a phone call and were being asked by stylist Patti Wilson if we can get our clothes over to the set. The shoot was for Deutch Magazine showcasing Courtney Love and eight Russian models. We happened next was a tornado of chaos by of course Miss Love. She was high as a kite and decided to roll around in one of our dresses. At one point she ran out of the set with a bloody foot. She stepped on a rusty nail and babbled about promoting us on her tour and that only her neighnor Nicole could wear our clothes. Despite the fact that I thought Courtney was talking shit, Nicole Kidman’s stylist called us up the following week saying shed like to purchase from our collection. The whole story was regurgitated through the National Enquirer. And Courtney Love went to jail wearing one of your skirts? Yeah that same week she had a show and thoughtfully decided to throw a mic stand into the audience and crack someone’s head open. She than went onto David Letterman showed her tits and was escorted off to jail. She was wearing our blood, soot and cocaine covered skirt the whole time. 36
What's happening these days? These days Im juggling projects. Preparing to launch my clothing brand V.V.M.(Valence Vs Modulo), bringing the Komodo Folktale show to Jakarta, some freelance, and of course I-Magazine. To me versatility is key, so long as you work well with everything you do. The recent art exhibition on the Komodo mythology was Fashion or art? Which one takes preference? The exhibition was just art. I don’t have a particular preference because to me both fashion and art blur into eachother. However I am more keen to work on visuals, whether its for garment prints, a painting that tells a story or graphics that are just point blank weird and surreal. How long has VVM (Valance Versus Modulo) been around and who is the team? V.V.M. was started last year by myself (Valence) and artist Beth Radford (Modulo). We felt comfortable with each others aesthetics even though they are very different. That’s the beauty of it, She works with mathematical permutations to generate and graph her work and I play with abstraction of images and graphics to pull out raw, dark, sometimes chaotic images. Where's the latest collection going? As fas as VVM, our collection is being finalized with the printwear to balance out the leather works. With art it's long over due to share my more personal work, which leans into abstract characters, augmented figures, mixed media drawings & paintings, photography and the blurring of whats what.

Where have you stocked Ernte around the globe? Maxfield in LA, Colette in Paris, Barney's in NY, Loveless in Tokyo, Etc. Any other labels you are involved with? I helped begin a fantastic project [with Marcelle Laboux] named Monarc1 and am now working on something named Parts of Four. More on that later... What's the connection between you and Rick Owens? How did it come about? We help rick develop some of his metal & silver components, like belt buckles, closures and other things. I met Rick in Paris some years ago and we have been friends since. Working with him has had a huge influence on my work. He is a machine. You have had such huge success with the fashion, now it seems your focus is jewelry, can you elaborate why the new direction? There were a lot of changes a few years back, but the main factor was the death of Tiffa (co-founder of Ernte). She was responsible for so much of the fashion aspects that it felt impossible to progress in the same intensity alone. I have always loved jewelry and objects, it just feels much more natural to me.

Your intense taxidermy is like nothing else we've seen. Where's the inspiration for this coming from? I guess it is the raw abstraction of the animal form that I find most amazing. Animal magic. It is impossible to replicate so somehow freezing it in metal is deeply satisfying. The alchemy in the process is really something unique. You also have done installations at Collette in Paris, Hong Kong among others. What is the response to this multimedia approach to your instore installations? The responses to the installations were always really good, people love to see that sort of faceting in a brand. Something telling a story and giving context to the products. That sort of sculptural work is my favorite part. Whats your favorite part of the design process? Sketching free form ideas, that first moment when you are not limited by real world constraints. Whats your take on pressure in fashion design and how to deal with it? Whisky! But really, it is relentless.

QUEERFESSION: ONANDLIFULFI VING LLSINFAMIGLE,LYFINEXPECTATI DING A SOULMATE, DEALI N G WI T H SCANDALS, DI SC RI M I N ATI O N ON When you're a 30-something single gentleman who fancy the company of other gentlemen but still afraid to say so, it won’t be surprising to be constantly "poked" by your folks or by close family members, “Where’s your girlfriend?” or even more hauntingly, "When are you going to get married?"
speak up and bare the ugly truth, as we’re ‘trained’ to suppress our feelings and not show our emotions, making it even harder to express our inner selves to others. In the end, we just build this auto-antipathy to investing our time getting involved with someone else.
Being a single gay in today’s life falls into a new urban social category and has even lately spread like a religion. With today's lifestyle being totally more open-minded and liberating from that of our parents, we have choices beyond their comprehension which they never had, but still this nerve-slicing question can be quite challenging when it's being asked repeatedly. Is it possible we will ever get away with it -- that is, being happily gay and single? Is it really a choice or are we somehow designed to be a single person; not wanting to share our love or to be wanted, or is it simply a curse?
In this fierce humankind, finding a soul mate is like working in a gold mine. It'll take patience, care and skill to filter tons of black sand to finally find your tiny piece of gold. But to start with, can we be relaxed and open ourselves up without being too concerned about our "image, etc"?
While our habitat is struggling with urbanization problems, with overpopulation, lack of jobs, sickening traffic jams, never-ending battles over politics and religion, terrible pollution and bad fashion as some of the challenges, it is so true that in a city where millions of people live, most queers find it hard to admit their status and to find their compatible partner.
The general publicity about gay still labels gays as being shameful, embarrassing, and ‘comic’, placing more pressure on those in the gay community not willing to come out to ‘hide and not be proud’. But who can hide away their desires for too long when we live in the golden G-age with so many choices and ways to realize our secrets from backstreet secret hook ups, internet chat rooms for every fetish, sex scandals and betrayal which are common G-cases.
Every single is first busy surviving on their own, struggling against their own ambition, achievements, family, career, image, satisfaction, comfort zone, monthly income, and the list goes on. Even finding love and exploring future possibilities is becoming like applying for a job. When we meet a new person we like, we unconsciously present ourselves according to the image we want to display. It will be all sugar-coated at the beginning, as we would rather pretend and show only the good side of our personality. Special measures are always required for us to spill the truth about ourselves! We are also probably a little psyched ourselves, filling our minds with enthusiasm about him/her, and refusing to see their flaws. And when things go wrong, all our high expectations just collapse, but we can hardly 66
There are so many complexities going on under every gay person’s skin with the major one, the fear of being judged and discriminated against by society or one’s peers; many gays prefer to ‘shut up’ and go about living two lives, or staying put inside that closet.
These days trying to hide a corpse inside your wardrobe for too long until the stink can be smelt by your neighbor is not an option; lately gay existence here is becoming too noticeable and people are starting to question why the gay smell of suspicion has been replaced with the smell of freedom and pride which is ‘gayer’ nowadays than the days gone by. It’s getting G-hot in ‘eeere…! Just stroll along further into Dhyana Pura street at night, a whole new scope of gay lifestyle is swinging exhilaratingly with parties, clubs, and cruising spots. The boys here get raunchier and sweatier, their bubble-butts shaking fiercely on the floor doing their G-dance with their G-drink,
G-cigarette, flashing their latest G-hair style. Some compete to climb onto the tables to boogie-woogie as well; here everyone wants to hog the spotlight and many of them seem can’t afford to buy a top with sleeve anymore, welcome to G-world. Maybe after tired being silenced all this time, the G-neration, especially in Indonesia, have finally reached their peak just want to be drop their hair wax with all those concealers and loosen up their flat front pants and screaming free G-independet! Are we ready and gradually opening up more to accepting our gay community? Whatever my gag is, the local gay movement today evidently has made huge progress in its position of ‘behind the screen’ to ‘front page darling’. But still, there are a lot less fortunate gay guys and gals who commit to their parental dream to get married with their opposite sex for various reasons, such as hiding their true personas or to please their parents; to them this is face-saving and destined to be a hellride of unhappiness and deception and of never-ending lies to their partners. They follow all of their family's expectations -- but not their own. Why abuse your own happiness? So who's to blame for such a situation? Papas -- please stop asking, we can't stand the sound. Mammas -- please stop begging, your voice is painful and it's tearing us down. And aunties, just shuddup please. Let us work around our life and love schedule, it may take time due to "urban trauma", but give it a go for your children and let them make their own choices. Understand that we are still owed the same rights to live happily and be treated fairly as does anyone else in our multi cultural society. So stop judging and associating gay life as being a negative when most often you don’t know us unless its stereotype front page stuff? Just like most of you, we regard a gay lifestyle as straight although most often we have a bit more of a flare for ‘creativity’ and ‘flexibility’ *wink* Give the new G-era in Indonesia a chance to breathe, anyone?

WOMEN’S RELIGIOUS OUTFITS GO SINFUL The fasting month is here again, and for those adult Muslims must remember as kids to celebrate Idul Fitri means getting together at our grandparents' house, and each one of us would proudly flaunt our new outfits, specially bought for the occasion. As we're all grown up now, we pay less attention to this "new Lebaran outfit" custom. Renewed spirit is more important than new outfits when celebrating the day of victory. After all, why bother with a new dress when half the city has been playing dress up for the past month?
There are two types of jilbab women, first are those who wear a loose-fitting jilbab which falls to the waist, pinched under the chin, paired with rather straight and loose outfits which silhouette the body. Then there are those who sport a modified version, wrapped tightly around the head, ornamented with embroidery, corsage or other decorations. These can have a brim like a cap and are usually paired with fitted or semi-fitted outfits.
This is what I call "playing seasonal dress up". During the fasting month, most females, in all walks of life, from ticket girl to sales girl, from door greeter to front desk officer, from child to celebrity, all wear "a hint" of Moslem attire, which reflects how Muslim women should look. During this period, more women than usual use a head scarf, better known as a kerudung or a jilbab, to cover their hair.
What I don't understand though, is what I see as a new twist in Muslim wear. I often feel there's no common sense connection between the creative touch and the rationale behind wearing them. Some women wear jilbab only during fasting month, which makes it seem like a seasonal trend, rather than the salvation of a life time.
68
So what's happening with these new Muslim fashion trends? Look at designers' creations of modern Muslim wear; the jilbab looks exaggeratedly contemporary, similar to the work of cutting edge London hat designer Philip Treacy. Meanwhile the accompanying tight-fitting kebayas (Indonesian traditional long torso) are made with see-through lace, embellished with glaring crystal beads. Then there are the shocking choices of colored shawls, and wait! Let's not forget the super-thick foundation, glossy lipstick and smokey eyeshadow to top it off. I believe that religion shouldn't be catered to by fashion at all. It can't cut both ways -you can't satisfy the requirements of both. Either to wear religious garments that follows the established rules, or follows popular trends.
In Islam, the idea of covering up is directed at akil baliq (woman who have reached puberty) who are "ready": those who have proved a strong commitment to the faith, with consistent modesty and obedience to the Koran. Among the instructions, women are guided to dress modestly by covering up, in order not to attract too much attention, especially from men who are not their muhrim (close relative of the opposite sex with whom marriage is forbidden).
or decorative items that attract attention; not wearing thin materials and, finally, not showing off the curves of the body.
I don't think I'm the only one who gets choked up looking at the matching of bizarre garments -- fitted T-shirts, pencil pants, shorter hemlines, sheer and heavily decorated materials -- with jilbab. But what can I say? Do modern women want to appear religiously stylish (or stylishly religious?) even though it's probably not strictly in line with the Koran's commandments on how religious outfits should be worn? Those commandments include: covering up the whole physique, except for face and hands; not wearing items which act solely as accessories; not wearing flashy
On some occasions people seem to use religious attire only as a paradoxical fashion statement. Perhaps in the case of Muslim women's, these over-the-top designer outfits are just the parody we all enjoy? There are many other things that branch out from this Muslim fashion degeneration, like the Muslim swimsuit and jilbab for babies. I don't know about you, but I just think they're a bit unnecessary. I understand the need for adjustments when applying old traditions to the modern world. The rational modification of religious wear, including proper fit, choice of materials and modest use of bling-bling should be considered carefully. In the end which one will appear more revealing? Which one has the greater need to be concealed? Your hair or the curves of your body?

SAPU COMMUNITY: Sweeping Indonesia Clean
“Bersatu kita teguh, bercerai kita runtuh” is one renowned Indonesian national slogan. It means together we’ll be stronger than being alone. This expression is often likened to a broom stick; a single palm leaf rib is more breakable compare to when it comes in a stack, which can be functional to sweep the floor and the garden or even to chuck a stray cat out of your home territory! The simple ideology is applied by a group of environmentally concerned makers, designers, friends, sewer’s, trash collectors, artists, musicians, scientists and writers, mainly from central Java, Indonesia and Australia. Their mission: to sweep Indonesia clean. They use art and design as a tool to help spread an environmental message as well as provide sustainable livelihoods for its members. Many of them met through the
70
local Indonesian NGO; Komunitas TUK – Tanam Untuk Kehidupan (’Planting for Life’) - an environmentally concerned community of artists and volunteers established in 2006 and based in Salatiga, Central Java. Sapu community held their first exhibition of recycling waste materials such as inner tubes from bike tires, forgotten bits of everyday use, plastic drink bottles, old magazines, 2nd, 3rd hand clothing and pet food packaging into consumable products in 2010 in Jogjakarta. Since they received good response from the public, they continue their creativity and turn it into ‘commercialism with a mission’. They produce series of jewelries, bags, wallets, t-shirts and collectable items online with their prices range from Aus $ 6 to Aus $ 45. The profit goes to support environmental Clean Up programs such
as cleaning water waste river ways, children’s workshop, environmental forums, reforestation, and building installation art works in some disaster areas in Indonesia. Check out their online store at www. sapustore.com. There are always new designs as there is always new and ever growing trash. With a strong emphasis on grass roots community, capacity building and skill sharing, Sapu community aims to spread the word of environmental care through removing items out of the waste stream and transforming them into innovative, designed and stylish products using environmentally sustainable production techniques.

NATURE WORKS FOCUS: OREGANO (ORIGANUM VULGARE) RECIPE: GREEN DREAM HOW TO:
INGREDIENTS: • 1 celery stick • 1/2 green apple (Granny Smith) • 2 oregano sprigs • 1/2 green chilli • 1 lime (20ml) • sugar cane syrup (20ml) • pure water (50ml) • ice
• Cut the celery, apple & chilli and place in a mixing glass. • Muddle well until a pulp is created. • Place 1 oregano sprig in the palm of your hand, slap to release oils & add to mixture. • Add the lime juice, sugar cane syrup & water. • Add ice & shake well. • Strain into drinking glass over ice. • Garnish with an oregano sprig & serve. Enjoy!
Of the 60+ species of oregano, or oregano-like plants, relatively few actually possess significant medicinal powers. To be medicinal, it must be wild, mountaingrown, Greek or Mediterranean oregano, free of all chemicals and pesticides. Three oregano products that do contain significant medicinal powers are oil of oregano, oregano juice and crushed wild oregano. Part of the mint family, this aromatic, warm & slightly bitter herb varies in intensity. It is easily recognizable by the characteristic square stem and alternating pairings of leaves. A closely related plant is marjoram from Asia Minor, which, however, differs significantly in taste, because phenolic compounds are missing in its essential oil. In addition to being a popular culinary herb, the oil made from oregano boasts numerous and varied health benefits. Its active ingredient, carvacol, is a natural compound that fights bacteria, fungus, parasites and viruses. It is used both internally and externally to treat all kinds of infections, and there is an ever increasing amount of scientific evidence to prove its effectiveness. Oregano oil benefits include its antibacterial, antimicrobial and disinfectant properties. It is used to treat a variety of ailments from the flu to skin infections. Externally, conditions for which the oil of oregano are useful for include dandruff & hair loss. It is also valued against skin conditions such as acne, atheletes foot & ingrown toenails. It is beneficial against arthritis, neuritis & rhinitis. Internally, it assists in the aiding of canker sores, cavities & sore throat. Oregano was a favorite medicinal prescription of the ancient Greek physicians centuries ago, especially for skin infections & wounds, after which, the Greeks began adding it to almost all of their main meals. The word 'oregano' derived from the ancient Greek word meaning 'joy/delight of the mountains' as it grew wild on the hills and mountainsides along the Mediterranean. Did you know that oregano has from 3 to 30 times higher antioxidant activity than other herbs? Oregano has 42 times more antioxidant activity than apples, 30 times more than potatoes, 12 times more than oranges and 4 times more than blueberries.

I-Magazine Party @ JP's Warung Sideways. Bombing old-school hip-hop, DJ Steffi’s sexed up set for ‘shits n giggles’ rocked out for an extended play cause everyone was just luvin’ it. Andy and Ozlem backed it up and Jack Ker and Chris Penny who make up the duo Goody Gumdrops left people speechless with what to do on the dance floor. The twins Bo and Dust wrapped it up with a drum n bass mashup. And such was the un-announced oneyear anniversary of I-Magazine…

Bali base fashion label SKIN is known for its message about environment to keep it green. The materials used in their clothes and accessories are nature friendly and/or recycle things. It doesn’t mean they don’t make fashionable statement to the max out of their noble concept. Some remarkable items from their new jewelry collection are these ancient looking carved jade and terracotta pendants and rings. They remind me like those archetypical antique jewelries you will find in Lara Croft’s treasure box from her tomb breaking expedition somewhere in the deep of the jungle in Thailand. Well as a matter of fact, these carved jade and terracotta are brought from Siam land, and assembled in Bali by adding silver and leather string on them. There are series of dragon and Buddha carving, they’re bold enough to hang around your neck or wrap around your finger without looking too cheesy and seriously spiritual, but more likely fashionably spiritual! High scores for Surf Film Festival 2011
Ombak Bali is an independent international surf film festival screening the latest and best surf films and documentaries from around the world in Bali, Indonesia. It is a platform where national and international surf film makers can expose their films to an interested public. Over four days Ombak Bali Surf Film Festival took centre stage right on the beach in Seminyak. Popular beach hang out La Plancha, was packed with surf, cinema and party lovers from sunset till sunrise. The stars shone brightly, waves pounded on the shore, trees shimmered with neon lights and the atmosphere was infused with the laid back vibe that Bali is famous for. The 4th edition of the festival had a sweet film line-up that drew a crowd of more than 700 people each evening. Festival hits were SPLINTERS, RIO BRE AKS, WHO´S J.O.B and Moroccan big wave film SANA
SAIDA. The crowd was inspired by the two Skeleton Sea shorties; FREE FLIP FLOP and ALBATROSS EXHIBITIONIST and completely blown away by the breath taking images of SURFING DOLPHINS and WAY OF THE OCEAN. INNERSECTION producer Nathan Myers closed off the festival with his all time favorite sections of 2010-11. Director Greg Huglin attended the festival this year to present his film ‘Surfing Dolphins´: his verdict, “Amazing venue, great sound and top notch presentation.”

La Plancha One Year Anniversary Party La Barca Grand Opening 12th August 2011, Seminyak Beach I leave in state of sweat and alcohol. Vague memories of riding home shoeless, another lost pair of sandals somewhere on the beach. At least my helmet wasn’t stolen. Something comforting about riding home under the safety of tiny token plastic helmet wrapped over my blurry skull. It seems like only yesterday La Plancha opened. The funky little Spanish beach bar and restaurant that has laid down some of the best parties on the island is having their first birthday. Not going to miss this one. Could well be the party of the year. 92
26th August 2011, Batu Belig Beach It’s the new fresh cocktail flyby at sunset location at Batu Belig beach. Spread your wings and fly. If you can’t fly, then don’t try… It’s a beautiful feeling to soar through the skys. Ok, enough of the fluffy clichés. The cheap version is drink enough of all fresh fruit cocktails at sunset and you might feel like you’re flying your motorbike on the way home. La Barca is the big sister of La Plancha. Beautiful wood finishings, super insanely good food, and the location is quieter and more chilled. It’s opening on the 13th, so check it out before the debauchery of the Grand Opening.
