MANAGER’S NOTES MATT BEARD
GOOD EVENING and welcome to Halton Stadium for today’s game against Chelsea. The two weeks since we resumed playing after the summer break have been hectic. Facing Arsenal, Lincoln and then Bristol in the space of seven days gave us little time to train. Instead, we did recovery sessions in an attempt to keep the players fresh. The squad’s fitness was really tested and they showed they are in great condition by winning at Bristol late on. They also showed that mentally we are very strong. After negative results against Arsenal and then Lincoln in the cup, it would have been easy to be despondent when we found ourselves drawing 3-3 with Bristol after being 3-1 up. Instead, we battled against strong opponents to earn the points with Gemma Bonner netting a superb winning goal. The victory made the long journey home a lot more enjoyable.
It also means that we are top of the table again, although we’ve played two more games than Arsenal. At the start of this season our aim was to finish in the top four. We’ve now reassessed those ambitions and want to earn a European place. To do so we have to continue improving and get back to the standard of defending we displayed during the first half of the season. Recently, we’ve given away goals too easily. The opposition didn’t have to work hard to score and that’s something we need to eliminate quickly. At the other end of the pitch we are creating plenty of opportunities. We just need to start converting them. Against Lincoln we had 36 attempts on goal. Their ‘keeper, Karen Bardsley, was in outstanding form. But in such situations you have to find a way to score the goals you need. That performance was similar to our league display at Chelsea back in May. We were in control throughout and went ahead, but lost 2-1. Tonight we can’t let that happen. I went to watch Chelsea against Lincoln last Sunday and, although they were defeated, they are a dangerous side. Japanese international Yuki Ogimi is a world-class player and Eniola Aluko is a great striker. Having spent some time at Chelsea I’m sure I’ll see one or two familiar faces, which will be nice. But, what’s far more important is getting the three points. Arsenal don’t play until tomorrow afternoon so a victory for us would put some pressure on them. That’s what we have to keep doing. Thank you for your support, and enjoy the game. Matt. Liverpool Ladies

CAPTAIN’S COLUMN GEMMA BONNER
HELLO and welcome to Halton Stadium for today’s match against Chelsea.
Last week was a really tough one for us. Following the mid-season break we returned to a game against current champions Arsenal and then a midweek Continental cup semi final against Lincoln which went into extra time and penalties, we ended losing both games. Four days later we were away to Bristol Academy in a crucial top of the table clash, but we really rose to the occasion and came away winning a very competitive game 4-3 to go back to top of the FA WSL table. I was relieved as much as anything to get the winning goal to help the team towards getting the win we needed. The girls have been giving me quite a bit of stick throughout the season for being the only one that hadn’t scored, so hopefully that will shut them up for a bit now! We all knew it was a massive match for us and that we had to get the three points as well as put in a great performance, and we came away with the win. The squad has always had good moral amongst the players, but to pick up the three points and go back to the top gave us a great psychological boost. After the break we lost our momentum a little. None of us really wanted the break, but saying that, it did give everyone the chance to go home, get refreshed and come back from the Euros. If you ask any of the players they will probably say the same, but it’s all coming together again now after the Bristol game. It would be hard to single out one player in the Liverpool team that has stood out this season – everyone has played their part. I don’t think anyone expected us to be in the position we are now, but we’re all here to win games and it’s a great feeling to be back at the top of the league. We all know we’ve still got a lot to do to stay there and I think we all know it’s going to be tough, but we are going to give our all. Regarding tonight’s match we are treating it the same as every other game and are well prepared . Obviously with Chelsea being my old club I’m going to be seeing a few familiar faces, and also some quality new signings. I had two really enjoyable years there but we go out to win every game and tonight will be no different. Don’t forget you can keep up to date throughout the season by following us on Twitter @LFCladies. Thank you all for your support and enjoy the match.

CHELSEA LADIES made a steady start to the season and went into the mid-season break for the European Championships in fourth position.
Former Arsenal assistant Emma Hayes was appointed manager last August and brought in a string of new signings during the winter in a bid to boost the team’s performance after they finished sixth in the FA WSL last season. The Blues added England attacker Eniola Aluko, Sweden striker Sofia Jakobsson, Icelanicd duo Ólína Gudbjörg Vidarsdóttir and Edda Gardarsdóttir, as well as Brazilian midfielder Ester. After a narrow 2-1 defeat in June against an Arsenal Ladies team who have monopolised success in the English game for the past two decades, Hayes felt there were clear signs of the Blues’ development. She said: “Considering we are a new team we have made great progress. We were playing against an established team and I thought it was a good performance. We almost didn’t want the mid-season break to come as we are getting into a rhythm.” The squad was bolstered during the mid-season window with Japanese international striker Yuki Ogimi, QPR defender Sophie Fogarty and goalkeeper Marie Hourihan. • Brazilian Midfielder Ester The Blues resumed after the mid-season break with a 4-0 win over Doncaster Rovers Belles and Hayes added: “We’ve got a competitive squad now that can push on – not just for the second half of the season, but to challenge for the WSL title. If it doesn’t happen this year at least we’re going to get as close as we possibly can.
ENIOLA ALUKO
TWO TO WATCH:
England international Eniola Aluko re-joined Chelsea Ladies for a second spell at the club ahead of the 2013 season. She became the third member of Great Britain’s 2012 Olympic squad in the Chelsea ranks, joining Claire Rafferty and Dunia Susi. Aluko’s first spell at the club came in 2007, following stints at Birmingham City and Charlton Athletic, before she left for the US Women’s Professional League in 2008, enjoying spells with St Louis Athletica, Atlanta Beat and Sky Blue FC, before returning to English football for a second spell with Birmingham City. Aluko would win her second FA Cup winners medal, coming up against Chelsea to win the 2012 final on penalties. Equally comfortable playing out wide as well as a central striker, Aluko’s blistering pace and clinical eye for goal makes her a key member of the Chelsea Ladies squad.
Jakobsson also joined Chelsea Ladies ahead of the 2013 WSL campaign. A pacy centreforward, with an eye for goal and experience beyond her years, she is a regular in the Sweden national squad, having travelled to London for the 2012 Olympic games. Jakobsson was introduced to the international stage in 2006, making her debut for Sweden’s under-19 side against Kazahkstan in the same year. The striker then enjoyed a successful four-year stay at Umea, where she won two Swedish championships and was twice a runner-up in the Champions League. Her success would reach new heights in 2011, making her senior Sweden debut against England, before securing a move to Russian champions Rossiyanka. She was a part of the Swedish squad which reached the semi-finals of this summer’s European Championships.

COMMUNITY
LFC leaves charity legacy in Asia and Australia
AS PART of Liverpool FC’s recent preseason tour in Asia and Australia, the Club has left a lasting charitable legacy in the three countries the team visited.
Liverpool FC Foundation, the Club’s official charity, sent a group of community coaches on the tour to deliver a range of football related programmes designed to provide positive change to local children and adults. But these weren’t just whistle-stop programmes while Liverpool was in town. LFC has created three ‘charity partners’ in Indonesia, Australia and Thailand to continue providing support long after the squad returned to Liverpool.
Liverpool’s managing director, Ian Ayre, explains the thinking behind these long term partnerships. “LFC is world’s greatest football family. Our pre-season tour is an important part of our strategy to bring the Club closer to fans no matter how far away from Anfield they live. “As well and the first team’s training and match schedules, we committed to delivering a busy programme of activity off the pitch to provide positive change to local people through community football coaching. “It is important to us, however, that we don’t just provide this support for a day or two which is why we have created a legacy programme where we can continue to promote our charity partners’ campaigns through our global fan base via our extensive communications channels,” he added. As well as providing community-based soccer clinics in each city for disadvantaged
local people, LFC representatives and players met with each charity partner during the tour to establish their objectives and how the Club can support them going forward. For starters, LFC provided each charity with 500 tickets to a closed first team training session in each city as part of the tour while the longer term support will include sending signed LFC merchandise to help each charity raise money, give access to the Club’s website and social media channels to promote fund-raising activities, and, at the end of the season, send a batch of unused LFC kits to each charity for them to share among the people they help. The three charities that LFC is partnering are the British Council and Premier League’s Premier Skills’ Gocekz Project in Indonesia; the Reagan Milstein Foundation in Australia; and Bangkok School for the Blind in Thailand.
Lady Uraiwan Sirinupongs, Chairperson from Bangkok School for the Blind, said: “By having this charity partnership and arranging a football clinic for the blind children, we are privileged to be part of this remarkable experience with the world class football players of Liverpool. This is a great opportunity for our kids to learn and utilise the expertise from football coaches strengthening their self-esteem and confidence giving them drive to stand on their own.”

PENALTY HEARTACHE FOR REDS Liverpool Ladies 1 - Lincoln Ladies 1 (Lincoln win 4-2 on pens) FA Continental Cup semi-final • Wednesday 7 August 2013
LIVERPOOL Ladies suffered cruel fate as they lost 4-2 on penalties in the semi-final of the Continental Cup.
Matt Beard’s side had made the perfect start at the Halton Stadium when goal machine Natasha Dowie fired the Reds in front with their first attack. However, Lincoln equalised after 49 minutes when new signings Aileen Whelan and Courtney Sweetman-Kirk combined with the latter providing a neat finish to level the scores. There were no more goals and even half-an-hour’s extra-time could not separate the teams although Dowie and
Amanda Da Costa came close to ending Lincoln’s resistance. The game went to penalties. England international goalkeeper Karen Bardsley had enjoyed a fine game for Lincoln and she proved to be the hero in the shootout as she saved from Natasha Dowie and Louise Fors. It was a heartbreaking way for Matt Beard’s side to lose after they lost in the Women’s FA Cup at the same stage earlier in the season. SARAH FINDS LFC TOO GOOD TO MISS
“
The Liverpool name was something I couldn’t turn down.
”
SARAH GREGORIUS joined LFC last month after playing for two seasons in Germany with SC 07 Bad Neuenahr. Despite the Bundesliga being one of the strongest European leagues, the forward had no hesitation in moving to England. Liverpool pair Nicole Rolser and Corina Schroder were formerly teammates with Gregorius in Germany. “It made it a lot less daunting about coming over here,” she says. “They have only said good things about the club and the city. Although this is a new team, there is a good spirit here already. Good players and good management are here. But they are all good people as well. “I’ve been following the league and I’ve seen how Liverpool have been doing. The results have been impressive. But I alsowanted to be a part of a team that was pushing new ground. This was an option that provided that opportunity. The Liverpool name, though, was something I couldn’t turn down.” Gregorius believes the standard in England has the potential to be as strong as Germany. “The training sessions here [at Liverpool] 22
Liverpool Ladies
The FA WSL
have been at a really high tempo – a really high standard. I certainly don’t feel like I’m taking a step back. The games have been very competitive so far. One of the big things about the German league is that there’s a lot of depth. The bottom team can beat the top team. There’s always a lot of competitiveness and it’s not unusual for the title to go down to the final few weeks of the season. “Germany won the European Championships with a depleted squad because of injuries. That shows you the depth of the competition within the domestic league, I suppose. I will be curious to see whether this will be the same in England. Over time, I think it can.” Born in New Zealand, Gregorius has 47 caps for her country, scoring 17 goals. She appeared at the 2011 Women’s’ World Cup, held in Germany. “I’ve always treated my football career as an adventure. I’ve never looked too far into the future. When I left New Zealand, I left with an open mind. In a way, I’m surprised that my career has taken me here because growing up, you only hope that one day a club with the history of Liverpool asks you to sign forthem. Especially when you’re so far away in a country like New Zealand.” At Liverpool, Gregorius believes the club can achieve success in the short and the long-term. “It’s a young team. Hopefully shows that the club is embarking on a long-term project. But the club has also tried to sign some big players too. To me that indicates that the club is trying to be successful in the short-term too. From what I’ve seen, there’s no reason why that can’t happen. It seems the club has struck a pretty good balance in its approach.”

REDS PAIR TARGET ENGLAND SUCCESS
LIVERPOOL LADIES duo Ellie Stewart and Katie Zelem will be aiming to fire England to glory when the 2013 UEFA Under 19s European Championships get underway next week. The Reds’ recent signings are part of Mo Marley’s squad aiming for glory when the tournament kicks off in Wales on Monday. The Young Lions face Denmark, France and host nation Wales from 19-25 August. England start against France at Richmond Park in Carmarthen on Monday (7pm). Marley’s charges made it to the finals despite losing 5-4 to Serbia in their opening qualifier in April, going on to beat Hungary and Norway in their next two games. The head coach says her players are relishing the chance to appear in a Euro finals virtually on their own doorstep. She told Uefa.com: “It was important to make sure we were here, because it feels a bit more like a home tournament for us, with Wales being so close. “It’s not very often the players’ parents and family, their club friends and people associated with them actually get to come and see them play. It’s a big thing for the players. “First and foremost we are just glad to be here [because] it looked like we weren’t going to qualify, but then there is [2014 FIFA U20 Women’s] World Cup qualification at stake, so the big task is to get out of the group.” England’s group games: Monday – England v France (Carmarthen) Thursday – Wales v England (Carmarthen) Sunday – Denmark v England (Llanelli) The semi-finals will be played on 28 August and the final on 31 August. 26

CHELSEA BOSS HAS LIVERPOOL LINKS Did you know that the lady in the Chelsea dugout has links to this city?
Camden-born Emma Hayes studied for a degree in European studies, Spanish and sociology at Liverpool University, which she followed with a Masters in intelligence and international affairs at Salford. She first managed in America, overseeing affairs at Long Island Lady Riders and Iona College before joining Arsenal as assistant manager. She recently told The Independent that she rejected the chance to follow Vic Akers as Gunners manager as “we had won everything and I didn’t feel challenged.” Like Liverpool, Chelsea’s ladies team enjoys strong support from the men’s section and last year she discussed the challenge of managing a club with high expectations with then manager and ex-Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez.

CAPTAIN FANTASTIC! WONDER STRIKE WINS IT Bristol Academy 3 - Liverpool Ladies 4
FFA Women’s Super League • Saturday 10 August 2013
LIVERPOOL Ladies returned to the top of the FAWSL table after a thrilling encounter at Bristol Academy last Saturday. The game ebbed and flowed from end to end before captain Gemma Bonner smashed home a dramatic late winner. Ann-Marie Heatherson gave the home side the lead in the 21st minute with a scrambled effort that went in off the heel of recalled Reds goalkeeper Sarah Quantrill. But Liverpool levelled within six minutes from a Louise Fors penalty after Nicole Rolser had been tripped in the area. And Rolser gave Matt Beard’s side the lead on the stroke of half-time when she headed home from close-range following a Fors corner. Liverpool looked to have put themselves in command in the 57th minute when Katrin Omarsdottir produced a wonder strike from 25-yards after being teed up by Fara Williams. But Bristol showed why they are challenging at the top of the table themselves by clawing their way back into the game with two goals inside as many minutes.
Spanish duo Laura Del Rio and Natalia Sanchon scored in quick succession to set up a nail-biting finale. With four minutes remaining, Bonner produced a moment of magic. Sarah Gregorius was dispossessed in the area and the clearance fell to the Liverpool captain 30-yards from goal. She produced a fine first touch before unleashing a fierce drive that Bristol Academy Siobhan Chamberlain was powerless to keep out. Matt Beard sad afterwards: “It was a great game – end to end – and I’m just delighted we got the winner. It puts us right back in contention for the title and hopefully it will kick start the rest of our season.” Liverpool: Quantrill, Bronze, Engen, Bonner (c), Schroder, Fors (Gregorious 83), Williams, Omarsdottir, Rosler (Easton 75); Da Costa; Dowie (Longhurst 88). Subs (not used): Laws, Holbrook, Zelem, Riccio

IN MY LIFE SARAH QUANTRILL
It’s got to be the 4-0 win against Arsenal at the Emirates. You don’t beat Arsenal very often and to do so by that scoreline on their own ground was memorable.
Probably one in that game at the Emirates. They had a header from a corner and I saved it off the line but Fara got the credit for it! Everyone said that she headed it off the line but I actually saved it.
I started off as a striker and then when I was about 10 we had a game and the goalkeeper got injured so I got chucked in goal and that’s where I’ve been since. It’s worked out all right!
When I first started off at Arsenal 24 was my number and when I went to Chelsea it changed to 18. Then Beardy offered me the chance to have 24 again so I thought I’d take it. It doesn’t really bother me what number I am though.
I like pretty much any chart music. The only thing I’m not too keen on is the heavy metal stuff. 28

I’ve never actually been to one but perhaps I will do this year. I wouldn’t mind seeing Rihanna and I’ve heard that Pink is pretty good in concert too.
Love and Basketball was a pretty good one.
I always think the Algarve in Portugal is a nice place to go to.
I used to work in the coffee shop at Sainsbury’s. I then worked on the fish counter. It was horrible to start off with but it was okay once you got used to the smell!
Lucy Bronze. She’ll put music on in the changing room and be dancing around while you’re getting changed! She’s a good character and will make you laugh by doing silly things.
That would be Amanda or Whitney. Those Americans seem like they know everything!
I finished a course in sports studies at the University of Hertfordshire just before I joined Liverpool, so I may be able to go into sports coaching or sports development at some point.
I’d maybe go into the Police. Our exteammate Lizzie Ince has just joined and maybe after football that would be an interesting career to go into.
Back home in Norwich I’ve got a German Shepherd called Candy.
I heard a few stories about that on the news. I think it’s good in putting Norwich on the map more and helping people realise where it is. People often ask me where I’m from and when I say ‘Norwich’ they don’t really know where it is. So maybe the publicity about the film will help in that respect, but I’ll probably not go and see it!
I’m alright at making spaghetti bolognese and I try my hand at pasta dishes as well..
She’ll hate me for saying this but Katrin. She really can sing. She plays the guitar as well so we were trying to persuade her to audition for X-Factor but she wouldn’t do it.
There’s four of us who live in Wavertree. I’m with Katrin, Sarah Gregorius and Kate Longhurst, who I knew from Chelsea. It’s great to have that camaraderie.
