ROCKAWAY BOARDWALK Queens, NY NV5 Global Inc., Completed 2017

2

The newly reconstructed Rockaway Boardwalk in Queens, NY, which was destroyed during Superstorm Sandy, is decked with light blue and sand-colored concrete planks undulating to mimic the ocean waves that lie to the south. Designated bike lanes and a multitude of curved, ADA-compliant ramps allow patrons physical and visual access to the waterfront along the length of the boardwalk. The project was completed in five phases, and the new boardalk spans over five miles of open beachfront.

PS 153 Site Plan

Due to budget constraints and unknown subsurface conditions present at many of the NYC School Construction Authority's project sites, the designs for these playgrounds were unable to use traditional surface materials or play equipment requiring more than minimal amounts of excavation. Instead, each playground design made extensive use of colorful sports surfacing to create thematic supergraphics, multi-purpose tracks and painted games, as well as moveable play equipment that allows students to use imagination and cooperation to create their own unique play experience.

Site Plan

This design for the NYCHA-owned Beach 41st Street housing complex, located in Far Rockaway in Queens, NY, takes the existing playgrounds and community spaces scattered throughout the site and combines them into one interconnected play environment, providing a range of play opportunities and experiences for each stage of childhood development. Using the site context and waterfront views as inspiration, the brightly-colored surface patterns throughout the design are intended to express the movement of ocean waves and forms of marine life.

The installation

8

This environmental art installation uses sculptural metal poles resembling seed pods to create places for birds to perch. As the birds deposit their seed-laden droppings on the ground below, over time a landscape will appear created by the birds themselves, filled with their favorite seed-producing plants.
