game. He connected on 10 of 17 throws for 242 yards and three touchdowns. Tanner did throw two interceptions, but that didn’t matter to the celebrating Hart faithful that had made the short trip south. “I’m very happy for the kids,” Witteveen said. “Us driving home discipline and technique is starting to pay off.

SHELBY — As the conditions grew worse and worse on a cold, rainy night in Shelby, the Hart and Shelby soccer teams didn’t let up one bit. For 80 minutes of regulation and over nine minutes of overtime, the two squads battled without a goal. Finally, in the final minute of the first overtime period, the ball squirted free from Hart keeper Damian Gonzalez and Shelby’s Nick Eisenlohr raced in to pound it home, the winning margin in the Tigers’ 1-0 triumph. Eisenlohr was able to grab
the ball after an Enrique Vences corner kick bounced off Gonzalez’ mitts and wasn’t cleared by the Hart defense in time. The Pink and Green battle was every bit a rivalry showdown, with Hart (7-6, 1-4 West Michigan Conference) managing to fend off Shelby’s offensive advances through regulation. “It’s in big red marker on both our calendars,” Shelby coach Pete Peterson said. “It’s the big game in this county. You can throw the records away. This was probably fun to watch. It wasn’t fun to coach, because they never are when they’re close.

“We were (ahead) 12-3 for shots on goal, and it was only a matter of time before one of them was going to go in, just on sheer numbers. They were doing what they needed to do to stay in the game.” What Hart needed to do, it turns out, was play a 4-4-2 defensively minded set that
looked familiar to the Tigers because it was the same set they often play. “One of the comments made to me by my own team was, ‘Hey, are they running the same 4-4-2 defense with a diamond in the middle (that we use)?’” Peterson said. “There’s reasons why you run that, and
they were doing a pretty good job.” Shelby (11-0-1, 5-0 WMC) owned the better scoring chances through regulation, but Hart was able to keep the Tigers largely at bay. Early in the second half, Fernando Cabrera nearly broke loose for a goal, but Gonzalez came out to meet
him, throwing Cabrera’s shot attempt off just enough that it drifted to the left of the net. It was just one of several important plays Gonzalez made to keep the score deadlocked. “I tell you what, Damian back there made some saves
