Pink & Green Bowl set for Friday Hesperia appears back on track after pounding rival Holton By Andy Roberts Herald-Journal Writer

Hesperia’s Gerrit Yates (6) breaks free for a long touchdown run against Holton Friday night. Yates had nearly 200 yards rushing on only nine carries in Hesperia’s 54-6 win.

The Pink and Green Bowl is slated to highlight this week’s Oceana County football slate. Either Hart or Shelby will pick up its first win of the season Friday night, and for both teams, one of those would be very welcome. From Hart’s perspective, the Pirates enter the game hoping to pick things up defensively. Hart has given up 50 points or more in three consecutive games, most recently Friday’s 52-14 loss at Whitehall. The Pirates started with a bang in the game as Brady Tate took the opening kickoff back for a touchdown. Hart’s best offense to this point in the season has been Tate on kick returns, as he’s taken one back in two consecutive games.

Hart girls squeak out win in WMC opener Herald-Journal Writer

WALKERVILLE — Walkerville senior cross-country runner Perrin Kirwin was so determined to race in his final jamboree at his home course that he moved a scheduled doctor appointment up to make it happen. The move paid off for Kirwin, who despite losing steam late in the race still finished in third place at last Wednesday’s West Michigan D League jamboree at Walkerville. Kirwin suffered a meniscus tear during boys basketball season and, closing in on his recovery date, the senior wanted to race at his home meet. Although the team will also host the WMD championship meet, it was important for him to recontinued on 3b

WEEK 5 KICKOFF

“There were a few good blocks, and Brady Tate is a good athlete and he has good vision,” Hart coach Rick Witteveen said. “He sees the field very well. He made a couple of good cuts and was off to the races.” That, however, was the end of the highlights for Hart, as the Pirates were shredded by Whitehall’s excellent running game. Vikings’ star back Joe Dowdell averaged over 16 yards per carry on his nine attempts, and Whitehall had three other players top 60 yards rushing. “We had mental breakdowns in staying true to their assignments,” Witteveen said. “Whitehall runs that veer exceptionally well. Defensive ends have to take the quarterback and leave the outside back

alone, and the linebackers have to (do the reverse).” The Pirates enter this week’s game looking for their first win in the series since 2004. The Tigers’ current 0-4 mark, and the fact that lack of bodies forced them to forfeit last week’s game against Oakridge, would seem to indicate Hart has a chance to break that losing stretch, but Witteveen isn’t treating his team like the favorite. “Our kids have to come with the right mindset and keep working hard to improve and carry out the game plan, and hopefully things will go our way,” Witteveen said. “We have to own the line of scrimmage. If we don’t own the line of scrimmage, it’ll be a long night on both sides of the ball.” Shelby, meanwhile, is coming off that most dreaded of things, an off week. As mentioned, the Tigers were forced

HART — To use Hart coach Terry Tatro’s word, it became clear after Tuesday’s opening West Michigan Conference jamboree that the battle for the WMC girls’ title will be a “dogfight”. Hart took first place at the jamboree by just five points over longtime power and defending league champion Whitehall, 31-36, setting the early standard. The Pirates’ top trio — Adelyn Ackley, Alayna Ackley and Sierra Albus — did what they’ve become accustomed to doing, taking the top three spots in the race. But the Vikings had the next five finishers between the two teams. “Going in, my goal was to have a couple of our girls break
