Hart finally beats Shelby

Late 2-point conversion the difference in 20-19 Hart win, first in series since 2004 By Andy Roberts Herald-Journal Writer

“I’m very happy for the kids... To win your first game and to win it like that is huge for us as a football team.”

The streak is over. For the first time since 2004, the Hart football team knocked off Shelby in a 20-19 Pink and Green Bowl thriller Friday night. — Rick Witteveen The Pirates took their first Hart football coach and final lead of the game with 58 seconds left. (It probably helped For Witteveen, his reasoning Hart to within 19-18, coach for going for the two-pointer was simple. “I don’t like overtime,” Witteveen said. “You just never know (in overtime). You have the opportunity to take care of it then and there, you do it. Too many bad things can happen (in overtime).” Tanner connected with Angel Aguilar with the conversion pass, and the Pirates had secured a milestone victory. It was the first West Michigan Conference win for Hart (14, 1-3 WMC) since 2011, and only its third overall since then. “It was a bunch of happy young men, and rightfully so,” Witteveen said of the postgame atmosphere. “I told them to feel good about it, but not be satisfied with it. If we don’t use it to build on, we’re not moving in the right direction. It was a great growth point.” While Shelby (0-5, 0-4 WMC) held Hart’s running game largely in check, the Pirates’ quarterback Tanner made up for it with his best career

game. He connected on 10 of 17 throws for 242 yards and three touchdowns. Tanner did throw two interceptions, but that didn’t matter to the celebrating Hart faithful that had made the short trip south. “I’m very happy for the kids,” Witteveen said. “Us driving home discipline and technique is starting to pay off.

We need to keep improving. To win your first game and to win it like that is huge for us as a football team.” Shelby took an early 12-0 lead with two lengthy touchdown drives in the first quarter, and Hart, though it was moving the ball, committed some crucial turnovers early on. The Pirates remained con-

fident, though, even when they entered the locker room still down 12-0. That confidence paid off when Hart almost immediately scored a touchdown to open the second half on a Tanner to Jesse McGhan strike. Aguilar

Tigers score Pink and Green win in 0T By Andy Roberts Herald-Journal Writer

SHELBY — As the conditions grew worse and worse on a cold, rainy night in Shelby, the Hart and Shelby soccer teams didn’t let up one bit. For 80 minutes of regulation and over nine minutes of overtime, the two squads battled without a goal. Finally, in the final minute of the first overtime period, the ball squirted free from Hart keeper Damian Gonzalez and Shelby’s Nick Eisenlohr raced in to pound it home, the winning margin in the Tigers’ 1-0 triumph. Eisenlohr was able to grab

the ball after an Enrique Vences corner kick bounced off Gonzalez’ mitts and wasn’t cleared by the Hart defense in time. The Pink and Green battle was every bit a rivalry showdown, with Hart (7-6, 1-4 West Michigan Conference) managing to fend off Shelby’s offensive advances through regulation. “It’s in big red marker on both our calendars,” Shelby coach Pete Peterson said. “It’s the big game in this county. You can throw the records away. This was probably fun to watch. It wasn’t fun to coach, because they never are when they’re close.

“We were (ahead) 12-3 for shots on goal, and it was only a matter of time before one of them was going to go in, just on sheer numbers. They were doing what they needed to do to stay in the game.” What Hart needed to do, it turns out, was play a 4-4-2 defensively minded set that

looked familiar to the Tigers because it was the same set they often play. “One of the comments made to me by my own team was, ‘Hey, are they running the same 4-4-2 defense with a diamond in the middle (that we use)?’” Peterson said. “There’s reasons why you run that, and

they were doing a pretty good job.” Shelby (11-0-1, 5-0 WMC) owned the better scoring chances through regulation, but Hart was able to keep the Tigers largely at bay. Early in the second half, Fernando Cabrera nearly broke loose for a goal, but Gonzalez came out to meet

him, throwing Cabrera’s shot attempt off just enough that it drifted to the left of the net. It was just one of several important plays Gonzalez made to keep the score deadlocked. “I tell you what, Damian back there made some saves

Walkerville narrowly drops battle of Wildcats at Montague Haligus scores for ‘Cats By Andy Roberts Herald-Journal Writer

MONTAGUE — Walkerville played a tough game against Montague Thursday on the road, but the hosts won the battle of Wildcats, 2-1, on a late penalty kick goal. The game was tied at one with 11 minutes to go when Montague’s Elliot Kennedy was awarded a penalty kick after a foul in the box. Kennedy beat Walkerville keeper Emilio Mendoza for the winning score. Still, there were plenty of positives from coach Marc Pascavis, starting with the player who scored for Walkerville, Adrian Haligus. “Adrian had a really good game,” Pascavis said. “I had him playing one on one with (Kennedy). He was all over the field and did a really good job. All our defensive players played really good. We’ve improved a lot the last couple of weeks.” Haligus scored with 6:28 left in the first half, answering an early Montague goal. He got into the clear by executing a great series of moves to shake off the hosts’ defenders, and then beat Montague keeper David Rumsey one-on-one. Rumsey, though, came up with a game-saving play later in the game, stopping a Walkerville breakaway by deflecting a shot that was headed above his head on a line in the second half. Walkerville missed an opportunity early in the second half as well when Carl Tanner’s shot attempt sailed just over the net. “We had three or four really good chances to score, but just couldn’t put it in the back of the net,” Pascavis said. “We moved the ball around really well. We were faster than them. Their defense was a little slower than our forwards, so we took advantage of that a little bit.” Mendoza was another bright spot, as he put the clamps on

the net and largely kept Montague’s offense at bay despite a strong showing from the men in blue. “He had a really good game,” Pascavis said. “We’ve been switching him out with Diego (Rivera) here and there, but he stepped up today. He squeezed the ball and played good positioning.” Overall, Pascavis said he felt the team is steadily improving and he’s pleased with what he

has seen. “I am (happy),” Pascavis said. “We did really well offensively and defensively. We stepped up and had a really good game. “We’re doing pretty good. We had a setback last week against a good Hart team. (Montague is) a little more comparable as far as skill goes. When we’ve played teams that are our level, they’ve stepped up and played really good.”

where I’m thinking, ‘How is he even getting to that ball?’” Peterson said. “He’s nice, he’s aggressive, he comes out and picks them up.” For Hart, the loss was its third against the teams in the top tier of the conference, but the results have gotten progressively better. The Pirates opened the year with a threegoal loss to current first-place team North Muskegon, lost by two to Whitehall earlier this month and now have a onegoal loss to Shelby. The common denominator in those performances is offensive struggles. Hart, which had only three shots on goal Tuesday, scored just once in those three games, against the Norsemen. However, the progress is encouraging to coach Brenda Seguin. “That’s been our problem all year,” Seguin said of the offense. “I know the boys aren’t happy we lost, but to play that caliber of team and take them to overtime, I’m pretty happy with the way we played. We can see progression from the beginning of the season.” Of course, it didn’t help that Hart was facing an elite defense in Shelby. The Tigers have surrendered only four goals all year, and Peterson said the perfectionist attitude

by his players has a lot to do with their terrific performance in goal prevention. “They pride themselves on not getting beat,” Peterson said. “They don’t want to get scored on. Our defense is fast everywhere. It’s hard to get around them, it’s hard to get through them. “Just when you think you’ve got one guy beat...I watched Mackenzie (Wagner) go and cover Jorge (Cavazos) on the back side, and I saw Jorge do the same thing in the middle for Conner (Zaverl), and Conner was all in the middle. You’re going to win a lot of games like

that.” Shelby is itself hoping for some progression leading into Monday’s WMC regular-season finale against the Norsemen on the road. The game will determine the top seed in the upcoming league tournament. “That game is going to mean a whole bunch,” Peterson said. “Whoever wins that game will be sitting in the catbird’s seat for the tournament. I like our chances. I know they’re good, that Justice (Sikkema) is awesome and they have a couple good players playing beside him. But I’ll take this team and we’ll go to battle.”
