In Small Plains, Kansas during a terrible blizzard the body of a naked, frozen, teenage girl is found by the sheriff and his two sons. The body is taken to the office of the local doctor where something terrible happens that is witnessed by the son of the local judge, who is not seen by the sheriff or Book info the doctor. Title: The Virgin of Mitch goes home and tells Small Plains his father, the judge, what he Author: Nancy Pickard has seen. His father tells him Genre: Fiction/Mystery to go to bed and not say anyPublished: 2006 thing to anyone and Mitch Pages: 335 who is used to following his fathers directions does just that. Three hours later he is awakened by his parents. With his packed suitcases and other possessions Mitch is hustled out of town with an entire new plan for his life and the warning that he must never contact any of his friends or tell them of his whereabouts. He must never speak of this to anyone and forget what he saw because he is in great danger. His parents provide a wonderful place for him to finish his last three months of high school and a wonderful college education for him, which he takes full advantage of, but he never goes home, not even for holidays. Now 17 years later after the death of his mother, Mitch comes home. The mysterious dead girl, whose body no one ever claimed and was never identified, was buried by the good will of the entire town with a headstone provided by the towns people that read “ The Virgin of Small Plains.” People would bring flowers to her grave and tell her their troubles. Then the miracles began to happen. Just small things at first, but when a tornado goes through the town and brings a miracle it causes media attention. Mitch decides he has to find out the facts and the reason for the girls death even if it means letting out the long covered secrets of people he once loved and those he still loves. There are some enormous twists and turns this story takes that show the reader how much can be missed by trying to protect someone at the price of honesty and what sad mistakes you can make by not communicating with those you love. This is an “I can’t wait to see what happens next” kind of read, but take a fun day and do read it.
