Panthers dominate second half, beat Walkerville at holiday tournament Jake Palmer triples spark Hesperia after slow start By  Andy  Roberts HERALD-JOURNAL WRITER

WALKERVILLE — Jake Palmer isn’t usually the person whose long-distance shooting sparks Hesperia boys basketball. Tuesday afternoon, however, Palmer’s triples woke the

Panthers up. The senior broke open a close game with three-pointers on consecutive possessions, and the Panthers turned on the jets and rolled to a 71-47 win RYHU :DONHUYLOOH RQ WKH ÀUVW day of the Wildcats’ holiday tournament.

Wildcat girls win, Panthers play best game of year in defeat By  Andy  Roberts HERALD-JOURNAL WRITER

WALKERVILLE — It was a win-win feeling for both Hesperia and Walkerville Tuesday night after the Wildcats beat the Panthers 43-24 to close day one of the Walkerville holiday tournament.

The Wildcats picked up a needed win, racing out to a 17-3 lead after a quarter and cruising from there. And the Panthers played easily their best game of the season, doubling their previous season high in scoring and giving up fewer points than they had in a game. “Before the game, we said,

let’s get a good game here over the break and get us on a good note, Hesperia coach Scott Force said. “Hopefully, it’s a positive and we’ll see we’re going in the right direction. It felt good to get on the scoreboard a little bit. Early in the game, the Wildcats’ three-quarter court pres-

WALKERVILLE — Hart and Holton played a physical, back-and-forth battle much of the way Tuesday night to open up the Walkerville holiday girls tournament, but as Hart often does, it relied on Baylee Draper to carry things home. Draper posted 14 of her 26 points in the fourth quarter and piled up 20 rebounds, continuing her dominating season, as Hart pulled away late to defeat Holton 50-39. “Her rebounding picked up

The Pirates fed Draper repeatedly down the stretch, especially on the fast breaks caused by their relentless defensive pressure, to keep Holton at bay. Holton actually led early in the third quarter after coming out of the locker room with consecutive and-one baskets, and maintained the edge much of the frame. However, the Pi-

rates banked in a three-pointer late in the quarter to take the lead and never gave it up. Hart started slowly offensively but was able to counteract it with its always-strong defense. “We tend to struggle in the Ă€UVW FRXSOH RI TXDUWHUV WR JHW things moving,â€? Hovey said. coach Lee Oomen said. “When we did get opportunities to take care of the ball and finish, we didn’t. Shooting 20 percent from the field, you’re not going to win many games.” Once the Panthers had things more under control in the second half following a 14-4 spurt to start the third, Gordon turned to Dominick Varela and Paul Lopez for offense. Both responded, as Varela scored 11 points, all in the second half, and Lopez had eight. Gordon said it was the first time Lopez, a foreign-exchange student, had scored, but it certainly didn’t look like it as Lopez looked smooth in creating his own shots. “He played well, and Dominick played a good game too,” Gordon said. “Mark (Workman) did a nice job on the boards. Some of his putbacks were big for us too, and just his running up and down the court.” Workman had 10 points to go with his strong rebounding. The Wildcats, meanwhile, don’t need to look too hard to find the source of their struggles: offense and turnovers. However, Trent Speer had a solid performance for Walkerville, leading all scorers with 20 points. Jared Talsma added 12 points. Gordon said his team, which isn’t off to the kind of fast start

perhaps expected of them after returning a good deal of last year’s impressive group, should figure things out as the season progresses. “It’s just a matter of more chemistry and gelling,” Gordon said. “I think we have all the pieces, it’s just a matter of everyone knowing what their responsibility is and being able to help with others’ responsibilities too.”

girls around into different positions and playing some younger players to give the Wildcats some more experience where they needed it. Walkerville did, though, rely on Emily Merten again for offense and defense. Merten scored 15 points and provided assists on some of Kylie Masta’s team-leading 16, and the junior guard was a terror defensively, racing into passing lanes on several occasions. “She’s been really good,” Pascavis said. “In that 1-3-1 press, she really anticipates passes. She has a lot of steals for us. She’s been carrying the team the last couple of weeks.” Walkerville led by as many as 22 points before Hesperia

began clawing back. Gaining confidence with each shot, the Panthers even got a near half-court buzzer-beater from Caragan Frees, a JV call-up, to end the third quarter and got as close as 12 in the fourth. “We tend to have problems getting the ball to the hoop, but today they fell for us a little bit, so that was nice,” Force said. “I was happy with everyone today.” Mandy Purdy continued her season-long rebounding success and led the Panthers in scoring, with nine points. Walkerville, meanwhile, didn’t struggle too much with turnovers this time, but Pascavis knows eliminating that issue will be the key to his team’s

from Page 1b season. “Against better teams, you can’t turn it over,” Pascavis said. “This team here (Hesperia) only has one senior. Against teams with seniors and leadership, you turn it over and you go into the tank a little bit.” The Wildcats will look for the sweep against Holton Wednesday, who will enter the game smarting from a loss to Hart. “They’ll full-court press the whole game based on what they did against Hart,” Pascavis said. “They’re pretty big inside, so it’ll be a challenge for us. Hopefully we’ll get hot from the outside.”

she still was able to return and continue that consistent effort. “She causes a little havoc for the other team,” Hovey said. “We got some turnovers on traveling from the press there. She runs all over and plays where we want her to be.” Hart did struggle at the free throw line, as usual, hitting only 11 of 28 attempts. Holton was briefly able to creep back into things in the fourth quarter by hitting a few of its own charity shots, but the Pirates’ defense was too strong to allow things to get truly interesting. It was a nice feather in Hart’s cap to come away with the win

over Holton, which won a district championship a season ago. “We needed a good win, and it feels good to come away with one tonight,” Hovey said. Hart beats Devils off for nine more in the third as his team raced into the lead en route to a total of 18. His dribble penetration was a key factor in his success, Jerry said. “I keep telling him to stop settling for jump shots,” Jerry said. “He’s a good shooter, but sometimes he just needs to get to the hole and see the ball go in to get himself going.” The Pirates’ tough defense was also vital to the run, as Hart was able to get a fair amount of easy scoring chances off turnovers. Eisenlohr was on the receiving end of one of those chances after Angel Salgado lofted a nice pass to him to lead him away from a defender on a fast break. The game was close heading into the final few minutes, with the Pirates clinging to a 46-45 lead. Senior Brett Bonstell, for the second time this year, found himself with a wide open threepointer in a key spot, and again Bonstell delivered the triple, keeping Holton at bay. The Pirates would maintain a twopossession edge the rest of the way. “He seemed a little hesitant on this one,” Jerry said. “He wasn’t sure if he should take it, but he was so wide open he just stepped into it. He was one of the guys that brought energy in the first half. Him taking the shot, I didn’t have a problem with it.” The Pirates headed into a tougher matchup Wednesday against Hesperia, hoping to

sweep the Walkerville tournament. The Panthers’ talented guards present a tough matchup for a small Hart backcourt. “If we come out like we did today, it won’t be a seven-point deficit at halftime, it’ll be a 27-point deficit,” Jerry said.

“We have to come out with more energy tomorrow.” VanderLaan had 14 points for Hart, and Alex Dodson had 10. Bonstell chipped in nine. Kevin Slowik scored 15 for the Red Devils.
