There was standing room only at Golden Township’s Planning Commission meeting Tuesday evening, June 28 after the board invited residents to respond to recommendations for a proposed, stand-alone rental ordinance. Planning commission member Michael Cook chaired the nearly two-and-a-half-hour meeting, and remained congenial and courteous throughout despite tension between those for and against the ordinance. Cook told the 100-plus people attending that the six-page ordinance has been in the works since 2010,
Hart Main Street hires new manager
Julie Kreilick hopes to restore the vitality in the downtown Hart The Hart Main Street Board recently announce the hiring of a new manager. Julie Kreilick will join the Hart Kreilick Main Street movement as program manager starting Monday, July 25; the start of a new fiscal year for Hart Main Street. Kreilick brings with her extensive experience with the Main Street Program in Fremont, Ohio including economic development and retail recruitment. She also has 25 years experience as a successful business owner in downtown Fremont, Ohio. “I am very excited to join the Hart Main Street program to continue with the great work that has been done to revitalize downtown Hart,” Kreilick said. “I also look forward to bringing new ideas, energy, enthusiasm and growth to Hart as we work together building community!” Adding that she looks forward to meeting downtown business owners and community members. Kreilick and her husband, Ted, have recently purchased a home in the Pentwater area after being away from Oceana County for more than 30 years. They look forward to being near family and renewing friendships, as well as, making new friends. “I would like to say that finding a Hart Main Street Manager was an interesting project. We were very lucky to receive the caliber of persons interested in the position,” HMS Board Chair Anne Hardy said. “Ms. Kreilick was offered the Hart Main Street Manager position following interviews by the HMS Executive Committee because of her experience as a well-rounded small business owner, her familiarity with the Main Street approach and her previous involvement in city government. Camper accidentally shoots self in hand

SILVER LAKE — A 48-year-old Macomb, Mich. man might be criminally charged after he accidentally shot himself at a Silver Lake area campground July 3. According to the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 8:48 p.m. the man was handling his 9mm pistol while staying at the Jellystone Campground at 8239 W. Hazel Rd. near Silver Lake. The sheriff’s office indicates that the injured man did not think the gun was loaded when he shot himself across his left hand.

Hesperia kicks-off sesquicentennial celebration with History Trail dedication The Village of Hesperia’s summer long celebration honoring 150 years of Hesperia got underway over the fourth of July weekend. Sesquicentennial organizers gathered Monday, July 4 for a dedication ceremony for the village’s new History Trail at Webster Park. The History Trail features 13 information plaques placed around the park that tell the history of Hesperia. Plaque topics include, Daniel Weaver, Thaddeus Waters, the library, the Alpha Creamery Company, the Hesperia Free Fair, Patricia St.Clair, farmers, the rail road that wasn’t, the “Hesperia Movement,” Hesperia school, the logging industry, the dam and lumber mills.

Former Oceana’s Herald-Journal owner and President Maxine Huggard of Shelby died early Tuesday morning, July 5, in Blacksburg, Va. She was 94. Huggard was the granddaughter of Oceana Herald founder Harry M. Royal, who began the Shelby newspaper in 1888. She spent her lifetime in the newspaper business eventually sucHuggard ceeding her father, Rex Royal, as owner, editor and publisher. She and business partner Richard Lound ran the newspaper until 1981 when they formed a new partnership with former Hart Journal owner and Editor Lowell G. Rinker and created the current day Oceana’s Herald-Journal. Huggard and Lound also went on to form the White Lake Beacon in 1983 to serve the Whitehall/Montague area and later bought out Rinker’s interest in Oceana’s Herald-Journal in 1993. They sold their newspaper holdings to Shoreline Media Inc. in 1999. The newspapers are currently owned by Community Me-
