Welcome to Pentwater

The Garden Club of Pentwater and Neighboring Communities board welcomes all residents and visitors to join us in celebrating the beauty of nature. Pentwater and its surrounding towns provide us with natural beauty throughout the year. Rolling hills of agricultural produce and forest; plains, wetlands, lakes and rivers give us opportunities to view and enjoy a variety of wildlife, and of course, fauna and flowers throughout the seasons. This leads us to gardening and the opportunity to share a little bit about our gardeners and how we celebrated nature throughout the years. Over the last 87 years, members of this club worked to promote the knowledge and love of gardening. Our purpose has always been to beautify our communities while understanding and conserving our natural resources. From April through November, our members meet monthly for fellowship and educational presentations. We invite you, as residents or guests from out of town, to join us each month. Program topics vary each meeting. Landscape design, new plants introduced that year, using plants in cooking or decoration, or perhaps learning new ways to help preserve our environment such as understanding the importance

and methods of bee pollination are just a few of our educational presentations. In between meetings, we visit members’ gardens and other natural locations to informally share and foster our horticultural experiences. Our fundraisers benefit not only us, but the community. In May we conduct a spring plant sale during Saturday of Memorial Day weekend at Bell Park. Each year we provide plants from our own gardens and offer a featured plant such as lavender, helleborus, or this year a variety of herbs. Our gardeners are present to answer questions and eager to offer advice when solicited. In July, we host our very popular and well attended Blooming Arts Garden Walk. This event helps to showcase residents’ creative and exceptional gardens in the surrounding area. Musicians and artists add a special touch giving the viewer a unique and pleasant experience. From spring through fall, each month, we select and publicly recognize individual residents and businesses that actively demonstrate the philosophy and values of the garden club. They share with all of us the nurturing care and beauty of their home gardens, CONTINUED ON PAGE 19

Bringing the farm to you Up North is the hot new addition to Pentwater

BY MARY BETH CRAIN PTW WRITER Take three people, all experts in their particular fields, each with an entrepreneurial dream. Put them all together, add equal helpings of enthusiasm, vision and faith, and what do you get? The Up North Farm Market and Up North Garden Center. You may have seen this new addition to the area: a large complex just off the Monroe Road east of the Pentwater exit on U.S. 31 featuring several buildings—a farm market, garden center, feed and seed building, and a structure-inprogress, which will, with a target date of Labor Day weekend, be the new headquarters of Mike Blackmer Electric and Construction. Blackmer is, in fact, the guiding light behind Up North. A long-established Hart business owner whose company has been a thriving operation for years, he nonetheless harbored, since childhood, the secret dream of having a farm market. “I grew up in Elbridge Township, where my grandpa and grandma had a pickle farm and station, and a market,” says the friendly, soft-spoken Blackmer. “Everyone knew Blackmer Store. I was raised on a farm and in the store, so it’s in my blood. I always wanted to have a farm market. Growing things and watching them come to fruition is very rewarding. We live in such a great county with such a variety of fruits and vegetables. I have had so many customers and farmers who have supported me in my business, and it’s neat to be able to buy from them and support them. It’s an evolving thing.” So how, when and why did Up North finally make the transition from dream to reality? Through, essentially, a fortuitous series of connections and encounters with the two other principle dream catchers—Kristy Sauser and Brad Weesies. In the garden center, Brad and Kristy take time out of their busy schedules to tell the story of Up North. Although the establishment has only been open a few weeks, the phone is constantly ringing, people are steadily arriving, 2 PENTWATER THIS WEEK

and employees have a million questions. “What a wonderful idea,” a customer enthuses, gazing around the huge 6,200 sq. ft. nursery filled with flats, pots and hanging baskets of colorful flowers and plants, and carrying every product and accessory a garden could require. “It’s impressive!” “What’s most rewarding is seeing everybody who comes through this door,” grins Weesies. “The amazement, at the structure of the building and the quality of the merchandise.” Both Weesies and Sauser look so young, it’s hard to believe that they are co-owners, with Blackmer, of the new operation. Yet Weesies has five kids, the oldest 18, and Sauser, a wife of 22 years, has 10 and 12-year-old daughters who are cutting their work teeth at Up North, as they help around the center and market. Like Blackmer, the newbie entrepreneurs admit that Up North is the fulfillment of a long-cherished aspiration. Brad, a fourth-generation Weesies, had been working for years in the family business, Weesies Bros. Garden Centers and Landscaping. “My great-grandpa, who came over from the Netherlands, started Weesies,” he explains.“And I worked there ever since I can remember.” Brad had been promised a partnership in the business. But when that promise fell through, he decided that it was time to put his considerable experience to use in a venture of his own. “I had a family to provide for,” he says. “And I wanted to have something I could hand down to my sons. Something that they could count on in their future.” It was Mary Stiphany, wife of Bert Stiphany, the founder of Pentwater’s Harbor Design, who encouraged Weesies to pursue his idea and connected him with Blackmer. “Mike is very genuine,” Weesies observes. “He’s all about family, and he treats his employees like family. He encourages you, and he mentors you.”

Sauser, who has worked for Blackmer as a building designer since 2003, echoes Weesies’ sentiments. “To me, Mike is like a big brother. He’s great with everybody. He takes you under his wing. For him, it’s not just about work—it’s about helping you as an individual, helping you make life decisions.” Blackmer instantly tuned in to Weesies’s as-

for Mike for 14 years, and started building pole buildings in 2005. Prior to that I worked for Mike’s dad, Bob, who was president of Buildings Plus.” Since high school, Sauser had wanted to go

sets, and his enthusiasm. “Working with my hands and growing flowers is what I love to do,” Weesies says. “And I have all the connections to all the nurseries. I knew exactly what I wanted in a greenhouse structure. “Everything inside here we grew ourselves. Trees, shrubs and perennials have to be brought in, but everything else in grown in house. We started from either a rooted cutting or seed. I and one other guy did all the planting and growing, so I can keep my prices way down. It’s kind of like rewarding people for coming. They are so thankful, to have us here in Pentwater.” As for Sauser, she’s had a long time association with the Blackmer family. “I’ve known the Blackmers all my life,” she notes. “I have a degree in architectural construction and am a licensed builder. I’ve worked

Guess who’s coming to dinner? Everybody!

Centenary Methodist’s Community Dinners reach a ‘50,000 meals served’ milestone BY MARY BETH CRAIN PTW WRITER

4 PENTWATER THIS WEEK

PTW photo by Andrew Skinner

It’s another community dinner night at Pentwater’s Centenary United Methodist Church, and the social hall is, as usual, packed, with both old and young gathering for yet another free weekly meal. This evening, however, is special—it’s the final dinner of the season, and as such is somewhat bittersweet. “We’ll really miss it,” one older woman admits, as she stands in line for the picnic-style supper of hot dogs, potato salad, baked beans, coleslaw, green salad and dessert. “This is something my husband and I look forward to every week—getting together with our friends and enjoying a wonderful meal. It’s a big part of our social life.” It’s not the end of the dinners, though— they’ll resume after Labor Day. They’re just on hiatus, because, as Suzanne Ritchie, one of the event’s founders, notes, “We don’t have air conditioning and the kitchen just gets too hot in the summer. So we’re taking a break until September.” Tonight’s dinner is also a break from the standard event. The meals are traditionally a sit-down affair with volunteers waiting on tables, serving hot repasts that often border on the gourmet and include everything from rolls, salad and soup to entrees, side dishes and a dessert table bulging with all manner of sweet temptations. While this picnic dinner is selfserve, with paper plates and plastic ware, the regular dinners feature linen tablecloths, china and silver flatware—important, the founders believed, to show respect for patrons, whatever their circumstances. “We feel that the way the dinner is served is as important as the food itself,” noted Karen St. Denis in a 2010 interview. St. Denis, who, with her husband Richard, spearheaded the project, was determined from the beginning to make the dinners special. “We use china plates rather than disposables. We have the linen tablecloths and the nice place settings because we want to

promote an atmosphere of dignity.” Although the dinners were initially planned as a project to feed the hungry and financially pressed members of Oceana County, they soon grew into a community event anticipated by everyone from families to seniors who appreciated the opportunity to get out of the house, especially during the winter months, and gather with friends. “What began as a program to feed the hungry has grown into a weekly neighborhood event where neighbors and friends meet up with each other to find out what’s new and how they can support each other,” noted Karen. “Not everyone needs a free meal; many come to donate and eat with their friends. And we have parents and grandparents, kids and grandkids.” When the St. Denises first embarked on the project, they figured a small crowd might show up to the first dinner. They were, however, in for a surprise. “We patterned our idea after Scottville United Methodist Church’s free weekly dinners,”

said Karen. “When they started out, they were only serving around 12 dinners, and over time have progressed to around 100 dinners weekly. But we started out with a bang, serving over 80 dinners the first night.” That number has grown to over 200 weekly meals. And the event recently reached a milestone: to date, Centenary UM has served over 50,000 meals, including 7,500 served to Cove women’s shelter. “When we started this ministry, we had no idea how the community would respond. It’s very gratifying to know that we’ve exceeded the ‘50,000 meals served’ milestone in only seven years,” says Richard. “People don’t just come to eat—they become involved,” observes Gloria Egermeier, who’s been volunteering at the dinners since they began.“They come to serve, and do dishes, and help with the cooking. I cooked for many years, until physical problems limited my activ-

Library ribbon cutting June 20 The Pentwater Township Library is set to open its doors Monday, June 19 to the public following the completion of its “Project Refresh” renovation. The library will celebrate its new look Tuesday, June 20 during a ribbon cutting set for 7 p.m. at the building’s parking lot enterence. The library closed in early March so new wiring, cabling for computers and plumbing could be installed. The renovation has changed the library’s interior layout and includes painting, new carpeting, new furnishings, a new public rest room and a more robust wi-fi network. “Everything has gone pretty smooth,” Pentwater Township Library Director Mary Barker said. “It’s been amazing to see it (the transition) happen.” Prior to the renovation project, library patrons were allowed to check out materials and were given a due date of June 6. Barker said that through the past three months no one has attempted to return books in the library’s drop-off box. “We would like people to hold on to library materials until we reopen,” Barker added.

New book gives historical look at Pentwater homes, buildings Historic Home Tours book on-sale at Pentwater Historical Society Museum

The Pentwater Historical Society recently announced the publication of an all-new Pentwater Historic Home Tours book. The 52-page book features full color photos and accounts of the historical homes and downtown structures. The buildings range in architectural styles from the Classic American farmhouse to ornate examples of Victorian homes. Stories have been drawn Vander Zwart from both official records and folklore. They present many little known tidbits about the homes and the families who lived in them. Today’s casual visitor would never expect that this quaint village on the shore of Lake Michigan has had more than its share of unexpected wild adventures, tragic fires, family strife, unsolved mysteries, murderous feuds, epidemics, heroic deeds, plans gone awry, lurking scam artists and even an attempt at a tar and feathering. Every story offers the reader a colorful insight into the history of this lumbering hot spot founded by Charles Mears “The Lumber Baron of West Michigan.” Amy Vander Zwart, the author and photographer, is well acquainted with Pentwater having spent many summers here as a child. Vander Zwart and her husband recently purchased an older home in the village and, upon finding all sorts of old papers and objects in the house, became interested in its past history which led her to digging into the well documented photo and historical archives at the Pentwa-

ter Historical Society Museum. She found not only a wealth of information about her home but lots of interesting stories, news articles and old photos of homes, people and events in the village and decided to collect, photograph and write the stories that became the Home Tour Book. The book includes an easy to follow guide map that shows the route of three different, informative, historical walking, or driving tours. For easy reference, each tour segment is colorcoded. The numbers on the map cross-reference the pages associated with each home or business. The starting point is at the historical society’s museum but the map is clear enough that users may jump in at any spot. Pentwater Historic Home Tours can be purchased for $10 at the museum. For those that wish to have the books mailed, there will be a $3 per book shipping and handling charge.

Flippin,’ Flyin,’ Catchin’ Pancake Breakfast The Pentwater Historical Society will host its third 3 annual pancake breakfast with Chris Cakes of Michigan from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday, June 25. Most breakfast pancakes are served to you on a plate but not here! Chris Cakes of Michigan throws them and flips them high in the air—and you get to catch them (on a plate). Sometimes they are gently tossed (to the youngsters) and then there are those that are torpedoed at you – seven in a row—fast. Can you catch them? The crowd erupts into laughter. Sometimes you’re too close and sometimes you are too far away, nonetheless, it’s fun. Not only has Chris Cakes served four presidents and 16 governors they have also set the Guinness World Record of most pancakes made in an hour and highest tossed and caught pancakes. Tickets to this fun for the whole family event are $8 for adults and $5 for children (under 2 years old eat for free). Tickets may be purchased at the Pentwater Historical Museum, 85 S. Rutledge, in Pentwater; Decors By Sandra; and Pentwater Fair Trade or by calling Deb Deward at 869-2230, Sue Castor at 869-2069 or Joan Gehringer 869-2323. Tickets may be purchased at the breakfast for $9 adults and $6 for children (under 2 years old eat for free). The historical society anticipates it will be a bright, sunny day Sunday, June 25 but in case of rain the pancake breakfast will be moved to the Pentwater Friendship Center, 310 Rush St., Pentwater. 12 PENTWATER THIS WEEK

Pentwater Chamber of Commerce Director Eva Gregwer, far left, is joined by Doc. Brown (Michelle Angell-Powell) and Marty McFly (John Negal) during the opening of the 1992 Pentwater Elementary School time capsule Sunday evening, May 28 on the Pentwater Village Green. Above, an American flag featuring initials from the Pentwater Class of 1999 and 2000. Below, Rachel Griffis’ writing from the time capsule. Bottom center, notes from Trisha Betzler’s second grade class.

1992 time capsule opened in Pentwater BY AMANDA DODGE PTW WRITER “We just got back from 1992,” John Nagel, dressed as Marty McFly from the 80s movie Back to the Future, announced to the hundreds of people that had gathered on the Pentwater Village Green Sunday, May 28. All were present to watch Nagel, Eva Gregwer and Michelle Angell-Powell open a time capsule that was buried 25 years ago by the elementary students of Pentwater schools. “Let’s pop the cap on this bad boy,” Angell-Powell, dressed as Doctor Emmett Brown, exclaimed. The seal on the capsule, had been broken before the evening’s festivities had begun, so AngellPowell and Gregwer were able to easily open it and remove the contents. First they removed a small American Flag that had the initials of the school’s class of 1999 and 14 PENTWATER THIS WEEK

2000, who were in fifth and sixth grade at the time, inside the stars of the flag. Then they pulled out some photographs of many of the children that have grown up and remained a vital part of Pentwater and its downtown. Next was homework from Mary Stiphany’s fourth grade class, dated Sept. 16, 1992. Amongst the homework were

math papers and cursive practice. As Angell-Powell and Gregwer continued to remove items representing kindergarten through sixth grade at Pentwater, their art, their writings, their thoughts on the future, when one large rolled up piece of poster board stood out. Upon it, Trisha Betzler’s second grade class wrote about what life in 1992 was like. Gregwer read

aloud each line and who wrote it. “There is much political and social change,” Gregwer said that these words belonged Betzler, then she read the students’ comments. “We are building a new playground... Math is fun...This is our playground. We spent $40,000 on, don’t tear it down...The world is happy...School is fun.” Gregwer said after the capsule was opened that the items would be mounted on a board and would be on display to coincide with Pentwater’s current sesquicentennial and the filling of a new time capsule that is set to be opened in 50 years, on Pentwater’s bi-centennial. See the Pentwater Chamber of Commerce’s website and Facebook page for more information on where to view the time capsule’s contents. JUNE 13 - JUNE 27

We have a new couple who were so appreciative of the experience that they’re now lending their services doing dishes. We have a wonderful, committed group of people.” As many as three dozen volunteers from Centenary and St. James Episcopal Church participate in the dinners, serving and doing various other tasks. “It couldn’t happen without the dedication of the volunteers,” says the church’s pastor, Melanie Young. Suzanne Ritchie and her husband George, who have been active for years in the Pentwater community, are also dedicated volunteers. “We helped start the dinners,” Suzanne recalls. “I went with Karen to Scottville and saw how they did it, and we came back and implemented the idea here. I helped with all phases of the cooking, and George has been a dishwasher since day one.” “My area of expertise,” George wryly observes. “We never thought it would grow like this,” Suzanne reflects. “At first we didn’t know how we’d pay for it. But Karen is an expert at creating recipes and utilizing food. And donations have covered most of the expenses.” The community dinner, which is served Wednesdays from 4:30 to 6 p.m., runs from September through May. There is no charge, although people are welcome to donate whatever they feel they can afford.

colorful window box displays and container gardens. As a good neighbor, we annually support college scholarships given through Michigan Garden Club of which we are a member. Locally we purchase trees for village streets and provide for support of area parks and preserves. Helping individuals or families in need has always been a priority for the club by donating financially or through food donations. In addition, we formally recognized and supported those who protect us and our wonderful resources, our military. We dedicated a Blue Star Memorial at the Oceana County Courthouse in Hart. Our members appreciate the support we received over the years from the wonderful citizens of Pentwater and neighboring communities. We look forward to continue helping beautify our towns and share gardening expertise with our neighbors and young people. Doing our part to educate and help preserve the wildlife and those wonderful rolling hills, natural forests, wetlands and waterways is an investment in the future. Please join us as we “Share and Care, Laugh and Learn” in this wonderful world of west Michigan. Welcome to our garden club!
