Betty and Ron Christians
Welcome to Pentwater
Hi everyone. We are Ron and Betty Christians. Welcome to Pentwater! This is a great place to live, or visit. We have lived in Pentwater since 2012. We love this community. It’s a wonderful place to live. Like many visitors, for many years, we would travel from Grand Rapids to Pentwater each year to camp at the Charles Mears State Park. With great joy, we would enjoy seeing the beautiful, older homes, as we rode our bikes through this quiet village. What a great slice of Americana. The magnificent trees and the wonderful flowers, made for us an easy catch, to call this place home. We still enjoy our short trips to the state park to enjoy the beach and those wonderful sunsets. We often enjoy a walk downtown. We love the variety of shops and stores. Most of the time, you can meet the dedicated store owner. What pride and enthusiasm you will see, as you walk through each store and enjoy the latest fashion or gift items. Pentwater has so much to offer for the young, and the old. The Pentwater Historical Museum, located just three blocks east from the post office, is a wonderful tour down memory lane and is filled with the history of the Pentwater area. Another great place to visit is the Pent-
water Artisan Learning Center. Members are welcome to learn and explore new talents, as they procure various artifacts for personal use. The artisan center offers woodworking, painting, pottery, glasswork, weaving, wielding and much more. Betty takes great pride in working and building up the center’s weaving department. Visitors are always welcome to stop in for a short tour of this unique facility. If you are visiting on the weekend, you may want to catch a Sunday church service in our community. Pentwater offer several types of church faiths that may be of interest you. Oh, did we mention the wonderful Pentwater Township Library on Park Street? Visitors are always welcome to stop by, and see what is new! Our local Pentwater Farmer’s Market is now open for the season, taking place on the village green Mondays and Thursdays. What a neat place to pick up fruits, vegetables and fresh flowers. The Pentwater Service Club is a wonderful, generous organization. With over 85 members, we meet once a week at the Pentwater school from September to the end of May. The club raises funds CONTINUED ON PAGE 18 PENTWATER THIS WEEK 1
Haute Couture BY AMANDA DODGE PTW WRITER
Artist Charles M. Russell once wrote that “A fine hat fits like a good friend.” A milliner, or designer of women’s hats, knows that is one of the secrets to this artform. Hats are a fashion staple in England, with it being reported that Queen Elizabeth II has worn around 5,000 of them in the past 50 years. They are very much in vogue stateside as well, as hats are the norm at the Kentucky Derby, in fashion shows and in some churches. Pentwater native Andrea Blohm has a passion for millinery fashion that has been shaped and shown at the aforementioned hat-wearing hotspots. “From an early age I had a love of fashion. I became interested in hats during my time in London. My internship was in the same building as the studio for Philip Somerville, a milliner for Queen Elizabeth II. I had the opportunity to meet him and tour his studio and shop. As I became more familiar with the art and designers, I realized that any sort of headwear design is possible,” Blohm said. After graduating from Pentwater High School in 2002, Blohm went on “to study textile and apparel design at Western Michigan University.” “I traveled to London, England in 2006 for two terms (six months) of courses at American Intercontinental University, and I did an internship with a couture bridal designer.” “I was very fortunate to have lived with good family friends and fellow Pentwater residents, Terry and Elaine Valenzano in the posh borough of Chelsea,” Blohm noted.

“From an early age I had a love of fashion.

— Andrea Blohm
“In my second term of studies, I chose to take a millinery class and quite quickly knew that it was my niche. My instructor, Prudence, was and still is the headwear designer for Vivienne Westwood and also has her own design labels.” Upon her graduation from WMU in 2007, Blohm said that she “continued to make small headpieces and continued my millinery education on my own through studying vintage designs and various millinery books.” “As I became able to create more styles of hats and headpieces, I began to sell online and at artist markets and fairs. Since 2010, I have been selling on Etsy and my main show is the Pentwater Junior Women’s Club Fine Arts Fair,” Blohm said. “I have found that making hats is how I prefer to spend my free time. I have dabbled in making other accessories, but millinery is my passion.” Outside of millinery, Blohm moved to Ann Arbor in 2012 for “a career in automotive seating engineering at Johnson Controls, Inc. (soon to be a
new company called Adient).” She added that she currently works as Subject Matter Technical Expert support for their trim engineering group. “My daily responsibilities include side airbag design and safety requirements, global standardization and engineering support,” she said. In 2014, Blohm attended the “first Millinery Meet-Up event in Gatlinburg, Tenn. and had the opportunity to learn from instructors from the Netherlands,
Ireland and the United States. As a biennial event, I will be attending MMU again this coming October to learn from instructors from England, Australia, Ireland and the United States.” To create her head pieces Blohm uses a traditional, centuries-old method of making a woman’s hat. “For a felt or straw hat, a basic and almost flat hat shape is steamed and stretched over wooden blocks of different styles and sizes. I use vintage blocks that I’ve bought online or in antique stores. The shaped hat then dries and holds its form and is then ready for a wire to be sewn into the brim and a sizing or sweat band is sewn into the hat. Then the decorative features can be put into place,” she explained. “For smaller headpieces, the same blocking and shaping methods are used and I then use a silk or satin lining for quality and appearance.” Since first discovering millinery and trying it for herself, Blohm has made many stunning hats and

Pentwater Service Club to host ‘Meet the Candidates’ event July 13 With the Aug. 2 primary election approaching, the Pentwater Service Club is sponsoring a “Meet the Candidates” event Wednesday, July 13 at the Pentwater Friendship Center, 310 N. Rush St., beginning at 6 p.m. The service club has invited candidates in the following five contested county races: District 1 county commissioner, drain commissioner, road commissioner, sheriff and treasurer. Each candidate will be given five minutes to talk about their qualifications and the major issue they feel they will face once elected. Candidates are also invited to stay after the program
to chat informally with voters. The Aug. 2 ballot will also include three candidates running unopposed for prosecuting attorney, register of deeds and surveyor. While there’s not enough time for them to speak, moderator Larry Konopka will recognize those who attend and invite them to stay and mingle afterwards as well. According to organizers, the “Meet the Candidates” event is open to all Oceana County voters. For more information call 231-869-4338 or 231-343-3776. The Pentwater Service Club’s purpose is
to encourage and promote good citizenship, worthy local community projects and a better-informed citizenry. Between September and June, the club meets at Pentwater Public School every Thursday beginning at 11:15 a.m. Lunch follows at 12:20 p.m. Programs typically feature area leaders discussing topics of interest or local needs. The club warmly welcomes new members and more information can be found at www.serviceclub.org.

The effort to bring mental illness awareness and suicide prevention training to more primary and secondary school children in Oceana, Lake and Mason counties received a boost during a June 27 fundraiser for the Wayne Elhart BE NICE Memorial Fund at the Pentwater Yacht Club. Some $15,000 was contributed by event patrons through a raffle of a unique assortment of sculptures, furniture, art, jewelry and other items that were donated by area businesses and individuals. The Wayne Elhart We Be NICE Fund was set up last December by the Elhart family after Wayne’s battle with depression caused him to take his own life 15 months ago. The Mental Health Foundation of West Michigan has developed a “Be Nice” initiative that spreads awareness about how everyday people will encounter someone who may be struggling personally, or is affected by a family member or friend who battles depression. The “Be Nice” training deals with the importance of treating people with civility community-wide, and focuses on school-wide change through simple, daily actions. The cost to train the nearly 8,000 students attending schools in the West Shore Educational Service District is $200,000, and the Wayne Elhart We Be NICE Fund has set an ambitious goal for itself – to raise half this amount as matching dollars. The group is more than a third of the way toward its $100,000 fundraising goal. The Community Foundation for Oceana County manages the Fund. The program already has been introduced in the Pentwater and Walkerville school districts and is slated next for the Hart, Shelby and part of Ludington Public Schools. Painting, jewelry, pottery, photography, weaving, clothing, sculpture and all other media will be available. The Pentwater Tennis Club will again host its youth camp this summer for children interested in learning the game of tennis. The camp is open to children ages 6-16. Camp attendees should bring water and a tennis racket and wear a T-shirt, shorts and tennis shoes. Each child who completes the
camp will receive a T-shirt. The PTC will also host an additional camp Aug. 1-4, focusing on more competitive skill-building. Pentwater Township Library to host Karen West & Susan Ford-West: A Photographic Journey Karen West’s photographic presentations have been well received in Pentwater, and she and Susan Ford-West are returning again this year. Photographic Journey: Route 66 and the National Parks will take place Wednesday, July 13 at 7 p.m. at the Centenary United Methodist Church in Pentwater. In 2015, Karen and Susan travelled 25 days along Route 66 with a group of more than 300 during the Sisters on the Fly from Chicago to California. Karen found this trip relevant to her passion for photographing National Parks as the preservation of Route 66 is a major program of the National Park Service. Together they wrote their book, Sisters Get Their Kicks on Route 66, in Pentwater last summer and it was released in December 2015. This library program is free and open to the public.

sculpting and shaping lace and other materials that I rarely work with.” Blohm added that she is also a leader of the “Milliners of Etsy” team and they have contests within their group, which includes members from all over the world. “I won honorable mention for a hat early this past spring. However, I rarely enter contests as I’m too critical of my work. I did win best hat at Big Hart Brewery’s Kentucky Derby party this year, though.” Blohm has sent hats all around the world, including shipping to England, Australia, Israel and more. “I’ve also had many hats worn at

headpieces, but she said in terms of her favorite, it will always be the first one she ever made. “My favorite piece will always be my first hat that I made in London. It’s a hand blocked and hand sewn, cream colored rabbit fur felt cloche (bellshaped hat) with a burgundy velvet band,” Blohm recalled. “I find that I have a new favorite with each collection I create. This summer, my favorite piece is a hand pleated and sculpted green straw and silk headpiece. Upcoming designs will include more fur felts for fall and winter. After my new studies at the Millinery MeetUp, I will be able to work with

the Kentucky Derby,” she said. “My most memorable compliment was from Stephen Jones, a world renowned milliner from London. Jones is a favorite milliner of mine and I was starstruck when I met him at a luncheon in Detroit,” Blohm exclaimed. “We chatted, he autographed a limited edition book for me and then he said that he adored my hat, of course I was wearing one of my own.” Blohm said that she has also participated in a few fashion shows, with the largest being the Milliners of Etsy, “The Hat and the Little Black Dress.” “The show was in 2013 in Three Oaks, Mich. and my collection of hats were worn by young women from the Chicago Ballet. Most recently I had a collection of hats commissioned by Graham Sanford in the Fusion Fashion Show in Pentwater.” She was able to return to Pentwater for the Fusion Fashion Show and show off her headpieces that, according to the show’s program, were “created from molded bamboo reed and straw brimming.” As mentioned previously, Blohm has her own Etsy shop, etsy. com/shop/andreablohmmillinery, where customers can order ready to wear pieces or contact her to create a custom piece.
Blohm finds that her “creations sell best in person at markets and fairs as people are able to touch them and try them on.” Blohm will be at the Pentwater Junior Women’s Club 52nd Fine Arts Fair Saturday, July 9 from 9 a.m. to 5 p. m. and will also be at the Ann Arbor Sunday Artisan’s Market, every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Kerrytown Marketplace later this summer through the fall. Though she and her hats have traveled the world, she holds Pentwater dear to her heart. “I grew up in Pentwater. My mom’s family is native to town and my dad’s family is from Shelby. I’m proud to have such deep roots to the area,” Blohm said. “Pentwater will always be a very special place to me. Growing up in a village like Pentwater allowed me to become the person I am today. Creativity and individuality were encouraged and embraced and a strong work ethic was very necessary during the summer season. I have proudly carried that through into my engineering career and my millinery business. “I hope to be able to call it home again sometime in the future and continue my craft in the town I love.”

Band musicians are local residents and visitors, therefore, arrive a few minutes early to be given music. Music selected based on who arrives prior to the concert starting. Band size varies along with the selection played.
