WELCOME
The Barossa is renowned the world over as a relaxing destination among vines, wines and food, all of which have been crafted and cared for by six generations of artisans. The Barossa Vintage Festival is the largest and longest running wine tourism festival in Australia, with the first festival held in 1947.
The Barossa Vintage Festival is a celebration – of heritage and traditions passed down through generations, of abundant produce from our soil and our makers, of creativity and artistic expression, and of rich community where tasks and tables are shared. We’d love to invite you to join us in these celebrations and be part of the fun, food and festivities.
This festival program offers both visitors and locals a chance to celebrate the 2015 vintage. A chance to listen to the stories behind some of Australia’s premium brands, as you join them to enjoy the best in food and wine among settings of music, literature, art, craft and heritage.
The festival program offers glimpses into our Barossa way of life, and we’re looking forward to sharing it with you!
Barossa be consumed …
CHRIS PFEIFFER
WHISTLER WINES. CHAIR, TOURISM BAROSSA
I’d like to thank the individuals and businesses in the Barossa community for your contribution to another fantastic vintage festival, and a sincere thank you to Festival Director Andrew Dundon and the Barossa Vintage Festival Committee, for your creativity, energy and passion for the Barossa.
CATHY WILLS
REGIONAL TOURISM MANAGER, TOURISM BAROSSA. CHAIR, BAROSSA VINTAGE FESTIVAL COMMITTEE.
This is a food, wine, arts and heritage festival like no other I have experienced. The love, dedication and passion for the festival resonates deeply throughout the generations. I feel honoured to be invited in to the homes and hearts of the community to learn stories of festivals past and to help create memories for the future. The festival is a sophisticated, communitydriven event celebrating the end of harvest and vintage. Over five days, every town of the Barossa will come alive with over 95 individual events catering for every budget and experience. I encourage you to visit and stay for a few days to absorb yourself into the Barossan way of life – you will come back changed.
ANDREW DUNDON
FESTIVAL DIRECTOR, 2015 BAROSSA VINTAGE FESTIVAL.

ZIEGENMARKT Literally meaning ‘goat market’, the Ziegenmarkt was a fresh produce and livestock market, first appearing in Tanunda during the mid-1800s. While the tradition may have faded, in 1981 it was brought back during the Vintage Festival, with Goat Square lovingly transformed into a bustling German market – complete with pheasants, sheep, hares, pigs, fruit, vegetables and small goods. In 2015 this event will include a who’s who of Barossan wine and food (produce as well as readyto-eat), a live auction and an experience that embodies the sights, sounds and tastes of a bygone era.

Wine makers will drink with you, roving players will beguile you, and a 7-piece swing band with dancers will keep you serenaded as you eat your way through a grand feast buffet. 2015 BAROSSA VINTAGE FESTIVAL
THE ARTS Making fine wines and creating beautiful food are just the surface layer of art in the Barossa. As well, music, visual arts, writing and performing have all flourished for many years.
Since early settlement both banding and singing have provided a strong musical tradition, in which instrumental groups and Church and community choirs involve people of all ages. The recently-restored Hill & Son organ in the Regional Gallery has added a brilliant dimension to our music tradition.

2015 BAROSSA VINTAGE FESTIVAL
FOOD & WINE Good food + splendid wine + fun venues + excellent hosts = a great time.
A TASTE OF TRADITION
These food and wine events run the gamut from the very grand, all stops out, to more intimate gatherings: from events drawing their inspiration from our regional food traditions to those drawing upon other cultures. These above all are about celebrating the harvest and the vintage.
Presented by Rockford Wines.
The Barossa is proud of its food and wine history. We are a rare Australian region which can claim an identifiable regional food culture thanks to our first German speaking Lutheran settlers who arrived in the Barossa from 1842. Thankfully they were of true peasant stock, meaning nothing could be wasted. So we are blessed with the on-going traditions deriving from pre-refrigeration methods of preservation...Smoking...To produce stunning bacon, hams and mettwursts. Fermentation...why wine of course and what better way to preserve the grape crop? And whilst on the subject of fermentation this leads to wonderful breads and yeast cakes. I strongly advise you to pop in to our justly famous local butchers and bakers...Yes they still exist.
Join us in our barrel cellar for an historic journey through thirty years of winemaking at Rockford. We’ve dug deep into our museum cellar and put together a comprehensive collection of wines that shows the value of our commitment to traditional winemaking. Accompanying the wines are delicious and especially chosen morsels made by Sandor Palmai using produce from our garden. Numbers are strictly limited so bookings are essential. Bookings: (08) 8563 2720 or info.contact@rockfordwines.com.au
The other element of regional food is to use locally grown produce and this is done in the Barossa as a matter of course. Martin Luther would approve. After all it was he who said, “He who loves not wine, women and song remains a fool his whole life long”!

Whether it be the heritage displays, church and organ recitals, kangaroos at Kaiser Stuhl or the numerous wineries and restaurants dotted around the valley with their beckoning cellar doors; there is something here for everyone.
The strength of the Barossa is in its community working together. Multicultural heritage from the 1840s with surnames persisting from those early years - Angas and Evans to Saegenschnitter and Schultz. The Barossa is like an onion, as you peel back one layer another appears which is different and has another story to tell. I encourage you to celebrate vintage with us - long lunches, shiraz and rieslings from Lyndoch to Truro, Keyneton to Greenock; the heritage of each community is unique. From Angaston’s marble built heritage to the community store in Nuriootpa, seek it out and you will be pleasantly surprised that the Barossa isn’t just about wine; but wait … there’s more.
A GLASS OF CLASS
BAROSSA COMES HOME
Presented by Wohlers.
Presented by Barossa Vintage Festival and Ahrens.
Come celebrate the festival with a ‘Glass of Class’ at the Barossa’s iconic shopping destination, Wohlers Furniture and Homewares.
It’s the end of vintage: the grapes are crushed, the harvest is done and among the 750 grape growing and wine making families of the Barossa, it’s time to get together and celebrate.
Kick back with some relaxing retail therapy and enjoy an afternoon of 20% Off* Storewide, complimentary refreshments and ppetisers, entertainment, demonstrations and door prizes. Please RSVP to lana@wohlers.com.au or (08)8563 3494. *Terms and conditions apply. See in store for details.
Set on the Tanunda Oval, Barossa Comes Home is an open-house picnic, where locals invite the rest of the world in to taste the fruits of their toils and the loves of their labour. Special features include hundreds of wine tastings, grape treadings, a market bazaar, live music, eats, drinks and children’s entertainment. Sorry, no BYO.

ZIEGENMARKT Presented by Barossa Vintage Festival.
Literally meaning ‘goat market’, the Ziegenmarkt was a fresh produce and livestock market, first appearing in Tanunda during the mid-1800s.

BAROSSA VINTAGE FESTIVAL THE FORMATIVE YEARS 1946
₋₋
The first Vintage Festival Ball.
1947
₋₋
The official Barossa Vintage Festival Committee, made up of town representatives, was formed. 2000 people attended the Festival Ball in Nuriootpa. Everyone had a ball.

1948 1949

1950
₋₋ ₋₋
1951
₋₋ ₋₋
₋₋ ₋₋
The Festival was held over 2 days and included vehicle races, the Festival Ball, a Parade from Nuriootpa to Tanunda, the inaugural Daughter of Bacchus competition and a carnival on Tanunda Oval. The Daughter of Bacchus became the Vintage Queen. King George VI was invited to attend, but cancelled his Australian visit. Tanunda Oval hosted chariot races. A rodeo was held in Angaston. This included ‘wild cow’ milking. The Festival included a man and his wonderful canine tricksters, a ‘swingy interlude’, pig sticking, tent pegging, a ‘clever lady ventriloquist’ and police horses jumping through fire.
1952
₋₋
Festival cancelled due to the death of King George VI.
1953
₋₋
Guests consumed: 3000 chops, 2000 sausages, 720 saveloys, 800 pastries, 180 rabbits, 20 fowls, 2 suckling pigs, 20 gallons of soup, 50 gallons of tea, 5000 rolls and 700 sandwiches. 35 sheep were saved for later. No one was capable of counting the wine.
1954
₋₋
Smaller, one-day festival held. Presumably everyone was still recovering from 1953.
1955-1957 1958
₋₋
No festivals held.
₋₋
Marching Girls National Championships held. Over 600 girls marched. Committee suggested spectators wear fancy dress if you were attending the Festival Parade and/or were a member of the orchestra.
₋₋
1961-2015
₋₋
Festival held biannually, originally, to alternate with the Adelaide Festival of Arts.
Thank you to Bill Biscoe and the Barossa Vintage Festival Archives
The festival expanded to three days with a ball and street party in Nuriootpa on Friday. On Saturday, everyone was put to work grape picking in Lyndoch before the Parade procession between Nuriootpa and Tanunda. The Parade ended at Tanunda Oval for a carnival and the crowning of the Festival Queen. A man lost his trousers and borrowed a policeman’s to get home to Adelaide. SA Symphony Orchestra performed. Unconfirmed reports that the aforementioned man was the Bassoonist. #bvf2015 • #barossa • barossavintagefestival.com.au 49
