A year after the end of the Second World War, Bill Seppelt called a special meeting to consider organising a Barossa Valley Vintage Festival; an event he had seen when studying Oenology in Europe prior to the War. In 1946, the Barossa Council area consisted of several smaller Councils however each Chairman or Clerk was invited, together with leaders of the wine industry, growers, the South Australian Tourist Bureau through its local representative Martin Dallwitz, plus several high-profile business men. Bill Seppelt detailed why and how these wine festivals were run in the European wine making areas. It was unanimously realised that such a Festival would not only promote the wine industry but also encourage greater tourism, which, in turn would make people aware of the Barossa’s culture, winemaking, old world cuisine and music. It was agreed to hold a Festival during the 1947 vintage in the form of a Vintage Ball and then the following year add the Queen Competition and Float Procession. A committee was formed and Bert Scholz was nominated as Chairman and President of the inaugural Barossa Valley Vintage Festival. I am honoured that I was a member of the committee that created the nucleus of this now highly successful Australian and world-renowned Vintage Festival 70 years ago and served as President for six years.

From the very first year we made the Barossa our home, the Vintage Festival has been part of my most treasured memories here. A week of wonderful events, rich with the handcrafted heritage and culture we all continue to draw upon as inspiration for our modern-day livelihoods, offers every opportunity to create new traditions along the way. One of the traditions our family has always associated with the Festival is watching the parade; come rain or shine, from when our girls were little, until now with their own children, we have always set up our roadside picnic, complete with a portable barbecue for locally made sausages and smoked bacon and topped off with a glass of local sparkling in hand. Good food, good wine and plenty of laughter - a true dose of the Barossa. I can’t tell you how proud I am to say I’m from the Barossa. Our region has a cachet I know others envy, but it’s not something that can be easily replicated. This love of food, wine and music, and the community’s willingness and ability to pull together as a whole, are so entrenched they are now recognised as being part of the Barossa ethic. Barossans have never been the type to need an excuse to celebrate, but the 70th birthday of our beloved Vintage Festival certainly gives us every reason to share our table - and everyone’s invited!

The Vintage Festival is a wonderful celebration – of place, of family and generational traditions, of creativity and innovation, and of the abundance produced from our soil and by our makers. The founders of the original 1947 Barossa Vintage Festival envisaged an event to showcase the Barossa’s premium wines and food traditions, celebrate its stories and inspire guests to visit from all over the world. Our vision for the 2017 is just the same! Wherever you are in the world, or if the Barossa is your home - we’d love to invite you to join the celebrations and be part of the fun, food and festivities. Take time to browse through the following pages, pencil in hand, and begin to plan your festival week itinerary. For some, this may be a brand new experience – a chance to select from more than 90 diverse events! For others, your 2017 Barossa Vintage Festival may follow a well-trodden path. My childhood festival memories are of sitting on the verandah of our house at Goat Square, Tanunda, watching the magic of the Ziegenmarkt unfold before my eyes. Where ever your festival week takes you – you’ll be sure to touch something of the spirit of our Barossa community.
It is an absolute honour to be invited to deliver the 70th Anniversary of the Barossa Vintage Festival. Not only is it South Australia’s largest regional festival but it is also a deeply personal festival for the people of the Barossa. Generations of family members all hold a cherished memory the festival and I absolutely love hearing their favourite stories from the past 70 years. The 2017 program acknowledges and respects deep Barossan traditions while also creating opportunities for new festival traditions and memory-making experiences. There’s the old favourites like the Barossa Wine Chapters Auction & Lunch, Ziegenmarkt, Long Lunches, Town Celebrations and the Barossa Scarecrows, but the 2017 program has been bolstered by marquee events including the Chook Shed Social Club, the Silver Raven Festival, Feast, Folk and Fossick at Lyndoch, and Punkt zu Punkt - a 33km hill climbing trail run through Riesling country.
I would like to say a sincere thank you to everyone in the Barossa community who has contributed to this year’s festival. And a special thanks to Festival Director Andrew Dundon and the Barossa Vintage Festival Committee, for your creativity and passion for the Barossa.
There are over 90 events in the 2017 program and over a third of them are free entry. April 19 – 23 is the perfect time to stay in the Barossa for a couple of days, take it slow and immerse yourself in the Barossan way of life. Learn from the oldtimers or seek out the vibrant young folk handcrafting new ideas in back sheds and cellars around the region. The Barossa is a truly unique region and the Barossa Vintage Festival is the perfect time to get swept away in it’s magic.

Perception is reality… “A few years ago, we moved away from timber 6 pack boxes and into gloss cardboard for our flagship Elderton wines, Ashmead and Command. On release of both wines, we instantly noticed that sales rates had decreased. It was especially noticeable in people buying the 6 packs as gifts, and it sliced a hole in our sales rate both locally and internationally. But we saw the light quick smart. Within a vintage or two we were back in custom-made timber boxes from Barossa Enterprises and Ashmead and Command haven’t looked back since. We’ve been working with Barossa Enterprises for over a decade. They do more for us than just make beautiful timber boxes. They provide us with a full service – labelling, tissue wrapping, packing and shipping our wine, plus supplying us with export pallets as well.”

The Southern Invasion
UNEARTHED @ SEPPELTSFIELD
Presented by schild estate wines
Presented by seppeltsfield wines
Schild Estate are set to invade the Northerners this Vintage Festival, bringing with them their new mobile pop up cellar door and food friends, to bring wine tasting and delectables to Bethany Reserve.
70 years ago, Hilton Mervyn (Bill) Seppelt cofounded the very first Barossa Vintage Festival. Hilton was also credited with establishing Seppeltsfield’s remarkable Sherry collection, having secretly obtained flor-yeast culture from a Spanish Bodega in the 1930s.
Taste the full range of Schild Estate wines and treat yourself to a selection of gourmet food truck cuisine, to give you the boost you need to carry on the festivities at the Silver Raven Festival. A free family friendly event, reminisce with us about the years (and vintages) gone by, and join the Schild family in celebrating another Vintage Fest!
To honour Hilton, we invite you to a night of Spanish-style cuisine, as part of our unearthed@seppeltsfield pop-up restaurant series. Held in the Seppeltsfield 1882 Vinegar Haus, expect Spanish tapas-style delights by Executive Chef Owen Andrews and a wine lounge featuring Sherry-spiked contemporary cocktails and live music.

Come along and enjoy great-tasting Barossa Coffee Roasters’ coffee, home-made baked goods, or some regional produce as you admire the artworks and ponder a purchase from a selection of books, handicrafts, preserves, and biscuits.
Hardy and brother Bert were third generation Doddridges working this Blacksmith Shop. In 1965, when in his eighties, Hardy shod his last horse. He kept working other parts of the ‘smithy’ until the 1970s. Doddridge’s Blacksmith Shop shod cart and riding horses, and made wrought iron for carts, buggies, ploughs and tools. Built in 1876, this is one of the very few remaining main street ‘smithies’ in South Australia.

HERITAGE & COMMUNITY Historic Pipe Organs & Bells Tour
Old Union Chapel Display
Visit a number of churches and discover the unique organ and bell heritage of the Barossa. There will be a short recital and guide talk at each location. The Barossa Region is home to a total of 25 pipe organs, found in churches, halls and homes. The earliest was built circa 1840 and the latest in 2011. The contrasting size and sound of the instruments creates a very interesting organ landscape. Transport between venues is by private car.
The Union Chapel at Angaston was opened on 28th February 1844 for any denomination to use for a variety of different occasions. The chapel and land was given to the community by George Fife Angas, who was a dedicated believer in religious freedom. Over the years it has had many uses including a public meeting facility, dried fruit storage, a home when buildings were scarce after World War 2, a shearing shed and a garage.

HERITAGE & COMMUNITY The Mount lofty ranges agrarian landscape world heritage bid
You may already be aware that early European arrivals in the Barossa were fleeing religious persecution in their native Silesia and Prussia. However, the richness of this story comes to life when the narratives of two key characters intertwine: those of the pioneering George Fife Angas and the indefatigable Pastor August Ludwig Christian Kavel. Picture the meeting: the unwaveringly devout Lutheran Pastor, seeking safe harbour for his flock and the steely Scottish industrialist - recently acquired of vast swathes of the new colony of South Australia - seeking an industrious, frugal workforce to drive the economic engine of his new southern outpost. Angas was an astute, successful business man but he was also deeply committed to the ideals of religious freedom and tolerance and he gave voice to these convictions through his sponsorship of the settlers who would become the first Barossans. By pre-emptively surveying and setting out whole towns before their new inhabitants arrived – including making provision for schools, churches and communal village grazing land - he ensured the planned, orderly settlement of the Barossa region. In doing so, he gave life to the grand philosophical ambitions of thinkers such as John Stuart Mill and Jeremy Bentham who advocated for a systematic colonisation model, not practiced since the time of the ancient Greeks. Their lofty aspirations were literally brought down to earth in the rich, alluvial loam of the Barossa Valley, which was divided according to the medieval Silesian concept of Hufendorf. This pragmatic, precise village design ensured that every household was able to provide for their own needs, had equal access to water and the main road, and could graze their livestock on the village common. The distinctive nature of this planned settlement – and its practical expression of the utopian ideals upon which it was based - is adequately unique to form the basis of the current Mt Lofty Ranges World Heritage Bid. The gifts of the settlers’ tenacity, frugality, devotion and sheer capacity for hard work the likes of which few of us today can comprehend, can be seen and heard across the Barossa today. Fifth, sixth and seventh generation descendants worship in the churches built by hands and faith of their ancestors in services of thanksgiving and devotion which would not be unfamiliar to their founding congregations (albeit that they’re now in English).
