An explosive, revisionist history of the dark past, and darker present of the internet
Surveillance Valley The Secret Military History of the Internet
Yasha Levine
Everything we have been told about the democratic nature of the internet is a marketing pitch Beginning as a surveillance tool developed by ARPA for the Vietnam War, the internet has managed to become essential to our lives. More and more we trust it with aspects of even our most intimate existence. But it was developed, from the outset, as a weapon. Surveillance Valley investigates the unavoidable truth of the internet’s history, clearly demonstrating how the same military objectives and control systems driving the development of early internet technology are still at the heart of Silicon Valley. Amazon, Google and Facebook are now all multimillion dollar government contractors deeply involved in the defence industry. Even ‘secure’ networks like Tor have a military background. Without reading Surveillance Valley, your understanding of today’s world will be missing a vital piece of the puzzle.
YASHA LEVINE is an investigative journalist and author who has written for Wired, The Baffler, and AlterNet, among others. He has appeared on network television, including MSNBC, and has had his work profiled by the New York Observer, Vanity Fair, and the Verge.

The thrilling, true, ColdWar era story of counterespionage in Moscow and the clandestine eavesdropping arms race
The Spy in Moscow Station A Counterspy’s Hunt for a Deadly Cold War Threat
Eric Haseltine Foreword by Gen. Michael V. Hayden (Retd.), Former Director of NSA & CIA
Moscow in the late 1970s: one by one, CIA assets are disappearing. The Spy in Moscow Station tells of a time when – much like today – Russian spycraft was proving itself far ahead of the best technology the US had to offer. This is the true story of unorthodox, underdog intelligence officers who fought an uphill battle against their government to prove that the KGB had pulled off the most devastating and breathtakingly thorough penetration of US national security in history. Incorporating declassified internal CIA memos and diplomatic cables, this suspenseful narrative reads like a thriller. The book also carries a chilling warning for the present: like the State and CIA officers who were certain their ‘sweeps’ could detect any threat in Moscow, we don’t know what we don’t know. Another gripping spy story from the publishers of the Sunday Times bestselling The Billion Dollar Spy.
ERIC HASELTINE was Director of Research at the NSA and Associate Director of National Intelligence in charge of Science and Technology for the US Intelligence community. Before joining the NSA, he was Executive Vice President of Disney Imagineering. A PhD neuroscientist, he has given several popular TED talks on the future of science and is an inventor with over 70 patents and pending patents. He lives in California with his wife, Dr. Chris Gilbert. 7

More Than Happiness Buddhist and Stoic Wisdom for a Sceptical Age
Antonia Macaro In More than Happiness, Antonia Macaro delves into Buddhism and Stoicism, focusing on the elements of each philosophy that fit with our sceptical age, and those that have the potential to make the biggest impact on how we live. From accepting that some things are beyond our control, to monitoring our emotions for unhealthy reactions, to shedding attachment to material things, there is much, she argues, that we can take and much else that we’d do better to leave behind.
An inspiring, critical and practical look at what we can learn from the teachings of Buddhism and Stoicism 9781848313774
Also available:
In this synthesis of ancient wisdom, Macaro reframes the ‘good life’, asking us to see the world as it really is and to question the value of the things we desire. The goal is more than happiness: living ethically and placing value on the right things in life.

The great conundrum that has taxed the finest minds in physics
Professor Maxwell’s Duplicitous Demon How James Clerk Maxwell Unravelled the Mysteries of Electromagnetism and Matter
Brian Clegg
Asked to name a great physicist, most people would mention Newton or Einstein, Feynman or Hawking. But ask a physicist and there’s no doubt that James Clerk Maxwell will be near the top of the list. Maxwell, an unassuming Victorian Scotsman, explained how we perceive colour. He uncovered the way gases behave. And, most significantly, he transformed the way physics was undertaken in his explanation of the interaction of electricity and magnetism, revealing the nature of light and laying the groundwork for everything from Einstein’s special relativity to modern electronics. Along the way, he set up one of the most enduring challenges in physics, one that has taxed the best minds ever since. ‘Maxwell’s demon’ is a tiny but thoroughly disruptive thought experiment that suggests the second law of thermodynamics, the law that governs the flow of time itself, can be broken. This is the story of a groundbreaking scientist, a great contributor to our understanding of the way the world works, and his duplicitous demon.
BRIAN CLEGG’S most recent book is The Reality Frame (Icon, 2017). His Dice World and A Brief History of Infinity were both longlisted for the Royal Society Prize for Science Books. He has written for Nature, BBC Focus, Physics World, The Times and The Observer. 11

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the legendary banned song Je t’aime ... moi non plus
Je T’aime The Legendary Love Story of Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg
Véronique Mortaigne
Timed to coincide with Valentine’s Day, Je T’aime is the lyrical retelling of a relationship that defined an age. Véronique Mortaigne’s brilliantly-written book skilfully identifies the pairing of Gainsbourg and Birkin as the key expression of the spirit of the age. Synonymous with love, eroticism, glamour, music, provocation, their affair would set France aflame as the sixties ebbed, and set in motion many of the ideas we have by now come to think of as specifically ‘French’. Skipping back and forth in time, Je T’aime takes the reader from the foggy Normandy landscapes where Serge and Jane retreated, to their carefree summers on the coast. En route to their superstardom in films and music, we experience their intrigues, triangular relationships, and jealous rages, the genius and the self-torture. Tenderly told, via new interviews with key players in their story, Je T’aime details the coming together of two massive personalities, who together created a model of the rebel couple for the ages.
VÉRONIQUE MORTAIGNE is a journalist and broadcaster. She has been head of music and arts at Le Monde and is the author of a dozen books, including biographies of Cesaria Evora, Manu Chao, and Johnny Halliday.

Is Earth really doomed to be destroyed by a cosmic catastrophe?
Cosmic Impact Understanding the Threat to Earth from Asteroids and Comets
Andrew May
As end-of-the-world scenarios go, an apocalyptic collision with an asteroid or comet is the new kid on the block, gaining respectability only in the last decade of the 20th century with the realisation that the dinosaurs had been wiped out by just such an impact. Now the science community is making up for lost time, with worldwide efforts to track the thousands of potentially hazardous near-Earth objects, and plans for high-tech hardware that could deflect an incoming object from a collision course – a procedure depicted, with little regard for scientific accuracy, in several Hollywood movies. Astrophysicist and science writer Andrew May disentangles fact from fiction in this fast-moving and entertaining account, covering the nature and history of comets and asteroids, the reason why some orbits are more hazardous than others, the devastating local and global effects that an impact event would produce, and – more optimistically – the way future space missions could avert a catastrophe.
ANDREW MAY is a freelance writer and science consultant. He has written on subjects as diverse as the physical sciences, military technology, British history and the paranormal. His recent books include pocket-sized biographies of Newton and Einstein, an eye-opening study of the relationship between pseudoscience and science fiction, and Destination Mars, in the Hot Science series. He lives in Somerset.

Hacking the Code of Life
The cutting-edge science that will revolutionise the way we prevent disease
How Gene Editing Will Rewrite Our Futures
Nessa Carey
Just 45 years ago, the age of gene modification was born. Researchers could create glow-in-the-dark mice, farmyard animals producing drugs in their milk, and vitamin-enhanced rice that could prevent half a million people going blind every year. But now GM is rapidly being supplanted by a new system called CRISPR or ‘gene editing’. Using this approach, scientists can manipulate the genes of almost any organism with a degree of precision, ease and speed that we could only dream of ten years ago. But is it ethical to change the genetic material of organisms in a way that might be passed on to future generations? If a person is suffering from a lethal genetic disease, is it even more unethical to deny them this option? Who controls the application of this technology, when it makes ‘biohacking’ – perhaps of one’s own genome – a real possibility? Nessa Carey’s book is a thrilling and timely snapshot of a technology that will radically alter our futures.

A Curious Journey Through Our Cosmic Family Tree
Jillian Scudder In this entralling cosmic journey through space and time, astrophysicist Jillian Scudder locates our home planet within its own ‘family tree’. Our parent the Earth and its sibling planets in our solar system formed within the same gas cloud. Without our grandparent the Sun, we would not exist, and the Sun in turn relies on the Milky Way as its home. The Milky Way rests in a larger web of galaxies that traces its origins right back to tiny fluctuations in the very early universe. Following these cosmic connections, we discover the many ties that bind us to our universe. For anyone interested in the ‘big picture’ of how the cosmos functions and how it is all connected, Jillian Scudder is the perfect guide.

An exploration of the psychological effects – the pleasures, benefits and disbenefits – of computer games
Lost in a Good Game Why We Play Video Games and What They Do To Us
Dr Pete Etchells
When Pete Etchells was thirteen, his father died from motor neurone disease. In order to cope, he immersed himself in a virtual world – first as an escape, but later to try to understand what had happened. Etchells is now a researcher into the psychological effects of video games, and was co-author on a recent paper explaining why WHO plans to classify ‘game addiction’ as a danger to public health are based on bad science and (he thinks) wrong. In this, his first book, he journeys through the history and development of video games – from Turing’s chess machine to mass multiplayer online games like World of Warcraft – via scientific study, to investigate the highs and lows of playing and get to the bottom of our relationship with games – why we do it, and what they really mean to us.
PETE ETCHELLS is a lecturer in psychology at Bath Spa University, whose field of research is the behavioural effects of videogames on the human brain. This is his first book.

A short guide to the six theories that try to explain the wild world of the quantum
Six Impossible Things The ‘Quanta of Solace’ and the Mysteries of the Subatomic World
John Gribbin
Quantum physics is strange. It tells us that a particle can be in two places at once. Indeed, that particle is also a wave, and everything in the quantum world can be described entirely in terms of waves, or entirely in terms of particles, whichever you prefer. All of this was clear by the end of the 1920s. But to the great distress of many physicists, let alone ordinary mortals, nobody has ever been able to come up with a common sense explanation of what is going on. Physicists have sought ‘quanta of solace’ in a variety of more or less convincing interpretations. Popular science master John Gribbin takes us on a delightfully mind-bending tour through the ‘big six’, from the Copenhagen interpretation via the pilot wave and many worlds approaches. All of them are crazy, and some are more crazy than others, but in this world crazy does not necessarily mean wrong, and being more crazy does not necessarily mean more wrong.
JOHN GRIBBIN’S numerous bestselling books include In Search of Schrödinger’s Cat, The Universe: A Biography, and 13.8: The Quest to Find the True Age of the Universe and the Theory of Everything. He is a Visiting Fellow at the University of Sussex, and was described as ‘one of the finest and most prolific writers of popular science around’ by the Spectator.

The history, theory and impacts of this worlddominating economic ideology
Capitalism A Graphic Guide
Sharron Shatil, Dan Cryan & Piero
Capitalism shapes every aspect of our world, beyond just our economic structures; it moulds our values and influences the way we write laws, wage wars, and even conduct personal relationships. From its beginnings to the present day, Capitalism: A Graphic Guide tells the story of capitalism’s remarkable and often ruthless rise, evolving through strife and struggle as much as innovation and enterprise. This non-fiction graphic novel explores the key developments that have shaped our modern world, from early banking to the founding of the USA, the Opium Wars, financial crashes and the rise of big data. It also introduces us to the leading proponents and critics of capitalism – including Adam Smith, Karl Marx, Theodor Adorno and Milton Friedman – providing both a theoretical and practical understanding of this fascinating subject.

An original, practical and informed guide to living with and understanding teenagers
A Practical Guide to the Psychology of Parenting Teenagers Understand Teen Behaviour
Kairen Cullen
The teenage years are complex, exciting and often turbulent. Growth, development and learning are intrinsic to this period and every teenage experience is different. For anyone who cares about a teenager’s wellbeing, development and learning, this Practical Guide offers a theoretically informed way of thinking about, understanding and actually living with teenagers. Experienced professional educational psychologist Kairen Cullen, parent of four adult children who were, of course, once teenagers, draws upon a wealth of experience as she looks at the areas of particular challenge in the teenage years, and the different psychological theories and approaches that can be used to address them. Full of case studies, practical tips and exercises, this guide focuses on the three major issues prevalent in teenage years: achievement, belonging and control, and the behaviours that fall within these categories. Underpinning everything with educational psychology literature and psychology theory in general, Dr Kairen Cullen expertly explains how the reader can develop and improve their relationships with teenagers.
KAIREN CULLEN is a registered Practitioner Educational Psychologist. She has worked independently and for Local Authorities for over four decades. At this time she is involved in writing, consultation and media-related projects. This title is the second she has written for the Icon Practical Guides series, the first being A Practical Guide to Child Psychology (2011, 2018).

Through an understanding of pain mechanisms and relief strategies, readers will be enabled to manage their symptoms better and regain some control over their daily lives.

Buzz The Nature and Necessity of Bees
Thor Hanson Hardback edition was BBC Radio 4’s Book of the Week in July 2018
Bees are like oxygen: ubiquitous, essential, and, for the most part, unseen. From honeybees and bumbles to lesserknown diggers, miners, leafcutters, and masons, bees have long been central to our harvests, our mythologies, and our very existence. They’ve given us sweetness and light, the beauty of flowers, and as much as a third of the foodstuffs we eat. And, alarmingly, they are at risk of disappearing. As informative and enchanting as the waggle dance of a honeybee, Buzz shows us why all bees are wonders to celebrate and protect. Read this book and you’ll never overlook them again.

The Cryotron Files The Strange Death of a Pioneering Cold War Computer Scientist
Douglas Buck & Iain Dey Dudley Buck was a brilliant scientist who developed or invented several early pieces of now-common technology (e.g. microchips, flash drives) in the 1950s. He might have benefitted from them greatly, had he not died aged 32 of a mysterious heart attack, just after a highprofile group of Soviet scientists visited his lab on a Cold War-era tour of the USA. Recently discovered papers reveal Buck’s extensive career in clandestine government work, that had led to his contact with Russia’s top computer scientists. A fascinating narrative history of Cold War-era computer and tech research, which combines social historical elements to produce a brilliant portrait of America in the mid-20th century.

Six ideas that show how to see through lies, deceptions and empty rhetoric, and a warning that we currently misunderstand both intelligence and education
The Six Secrets of Intelligence Why Modern Education Doesn’t Teach us to Think For Ourselves
Craig Adams
Some people have something to say in any conversation and can spot the hidden angles of completely unrelated problems; but how do they do it? More than two thousand years ago, the greatest thinker of Ancient Greece discovered the blueprint of the human mind. Although the latest cognitive science shows his blueprint to be exactly what sharpens our reasoning, subtlety of thought, and ability to think in different ways and for ourselves, we have meanwhile replaced it with a simplistic and seductive view of intelligence, education and the mind. Condensing that blueprint to six ‘secrets’, Craig Adams uncovers the underlying patterns of every discussion and debate we’ve ever had, and shows us how to be both harder to manipulate and more skilful in any conversation or debate – no matter the topic.
CRAIG ADAMS is a former commissioning editor at Harper Collins. He worked as a teacher before becoming disillusioned with education and convinced that it needed to be put right. This is his first book. 45

In this entertaining and wide-ranging book, Peter Pugh explores the whole notion of money. The amazing full story of Apollo 11 – The Right Stuff for a new generation
Apollo 11 – The Inside Story David Whitehouse
Fifty years ago in July 1969, Apollo 11 became the first manned mission to land on the moon, and Neil Armstrong the first man to step onto its surface. US President Nixon called it the greatest week since creation. In the most authoritative book ever written about Apollo, David Whitehouse reveals the true drama behind the mission, telling the story in the words of those who took part – based around exclusive interviews with the key players. This enthralling book takes us from the early rocket pioneers to the shock America received from the Soviets’ launch of the first satellite, Sputnik; from the race to put the first person into space, through President Kennedy’s enthusiasm and later doubts, to the astronauts’ intense competition to leave the first footprint. Here is the story as told by the crew of Apollo 11 and the many other astronauts who paved the way or went to the moon themselves after Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins. Astronauts, engineers, politicians, NASA officials, Soviet rivals – all tell their own story of a great moment of human achievement.
DAVID WHITEHOUSE is a former BBC Science Correspondent and BBC Science Editor. He is the author of five books including The Sun: A Biography and Journey to the Centre of the Earth, and has written for many newspapers and magazines including The Times, the Guardian, Focus, New Scientist and the Economist. How feminism shapes the world
A Graphic Guide
Cathia Jenainati & Judy Groves
Women in Saudi Arabia are now allowed to drive; we’re starting to see women of all sizes in our magazines; and historic sexual abuse cases are making headlines and causing change. Do we still need feminism? What does it mean to be a feminist anyway? In this unique, illustrated introduction, Cathia Jenainati and Judy Groves help us to explore these questions, on a tour of the history of conscious struggle against sexist oppression – from 16th-century challenges to the idea of women as weak and irrational, to 19th- and 20th-century ‘waves’ of feminism and suffrage movements, to present-day conversations about MeToo, black feminism, and women’s rights in the Middle East. Culture, critical theory and popular action combine to give us a picture of the challenges faced and victories secured in improving women’s rights and changing attitudes towards gender. As we’ll see, there is no one, singular feminism, but Feminism: A Graphic Guide will help us to engage with the heated debates that still take place and the work still to be done.

Getting to the heart of the AI debate
Artificial Intelligence Modern Magic or Dangerous Future?
Yorik Wilks
Artificial intelligence has long been a mainstay of science fiction and increasingly it feels as if AI is entering our everyday lives, with technology like Apple’s Siri now prominent, and self-driving cars almost upon us. But what do we actually mean when we talk about ‘AI’? Are the sentient machines of 2001 or The Matrix a real possibility or will real-world artificial intelligence look and feel very different? What has it done for us so far? And what technologies could it yield in the future? AI expert Yorick Wilks takes a journey through the history of artificial intelligence up to the present day, examining its origins, controversies and achievements, as well as looking into just how it works. He also considers the future, assessing whether these technologies could menace our way of life, but also how we are all likely to benefit from AI applications in the years to come. Entertaining, enlightening, and keenly argued, this is the essential one-stop guide to the AI debate.
YORICK WILKS is an emeritus Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the University of Sheffield, a research associate of the Oxford Internet Institute and a Senior Research Scientist at the Florida Institute of Human and Machine Cognition. His books include Artificial Companions (Benjamins, 2010) and Artificial Believers: The Ascription of Belief (with Afzal Ballim, Psychology Press, 1991).

Quantum Economics The New Science of Money
David Orrell A decade after the financial crisis, there is a growing consensus that economics has failed and needs to go back to the drawing board. David Orrell argues that it has been trying to solve the wrong problem all along. Just as physicists learn about matter by studying the exchange of particles at the subatomic level, so economics should begin by analysing the nature of money-based transactions.
The emerging science of quantum economics can help us create a ‘real-world’ economics that actually works for us all
From quantum physics to the dualistic properties of money, via the emerging areas of quantum finance and quantum cognition, this profoundly important book reveals that quantum economics is to neoclassical economics what quantum physics is to classical physics – a genuine turning point in our understanding.

The famous white Lipizzaner stallions of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna are scattered across rural Austria and Czechoslovakia in areas soon to be swallowed up by Soviet forces – there, doubtless, to become rations for the Red Army. Their only hope lies with the Americans: what if a small, highly mobile US task force could be sent deep behind German lines to rescue the horses before the Soviets arrive. So begins Operation Cowboy: GIs will join forces with a cadre of disillusioned Wehrmacht to save the world’s finest horses from fanatical SS and the ruthless Red Army in an extraordinary battle during the last few days of the war in Europe.

Also important is Saussure’s argument that meanings are determined by difference: no sign has meaning apart from its differential relationship to other signs. For example, the signifier “cat” signifies the mental concept of a four-legged, furry animal because the signifier cat is not equivalent with the signifiers bat or mat, etc., rather than because the word “cat” contains any essential or inherent dimension of cattiness. As for the signifier “bat”, is it a piece of sporting equipment or an animal? Saussure’s linguistics implies a suspension of language’s referential function: it presents language as a self-contained system of signs that operates according to certain principles. Meaning is arrived at negatively, rather than positively. A cat is a cat because it’s a cat. Can you really be so sure about that?
