‘We can stop it’: Brexit u-turn hope By Faye Brown

PRO-EU activists will be marching in the streets of Manchester this Sunday with the ultimate aim of stopping Brexit. The event will take place on the first day of the Tory Party Conference and coincides with a separate ‘Take Back Manchester’ anti-austerity festival. The protest, organised by campaign group Stop Brexit, will begin with a speakers debate in All Saints Park followed by a march to the doors of the Convention Centre, where the Conservative Party Conference will be in full swing. Peter French, founder of Stop Brexit, told Mancunian Matters: “The people in charge created a mess and ran away. Nobody took responsibility for what they did. “This is our chance not only to have our voices heard and to have speakers at the debate. “It’s also our chance to take our message right to the doors of the Conservative Party Conference whilst it’s in session and let them know just how we feel.” Alistair Campbell and A.C Grayling are amongst the promi-

nent individuals who’ll be speaking at the debate, as well as MP for Manchester Central Lucy Powell and writer and broadcaster Bonnie Greer. Mr French says the debate will readdress the misinformation given on both sides of the Referendum campaign, and offers a chance for locals to hear how Brexit will affect the country in general and the North of England in particular.

He said the march was one step in the campaign towards reversing the referendum decision, adding: “I absolutely, 100% whole heartedly believe that we can stop Brexit. I also think in time a lot of the country will come to that conclusion as well.” Greater Manchester voted to remain but, out of the area’s 10 Boroughs, 7 voted to leave. Despite the divisive result, campaigners insist they don’t wish to criticise or patronise anyone. Brenda Ashton, a spokesperson for remain group Liverpool4Europe, told MM: “We want people to have their say based on correct information, not on £350 million a week is going to the NHS type of claims”. Tens of thousands of people are expected to turn out to the march, which Mr French hopes will be the biggest student demonstration there’s been in years. In an impassioned plea for student supporters he said: “This is your future we are fighting for. You will be denied the choices that we have had if this goes ahead, so please think about that and please come and join us.”

Thousands of protestors expected to rally at Tory conference By Dan Taylor

POLICE have upped security in Manchester city centre ahead of the Conservative Party Conference this weekend. Barriers have been erected in the area around Manchester Central convention centre, where the

conference will begin on Sunday. Protest events will continue throughout the week, with actors Julie Hesmondhalgh and Maxine Peake taking part. Thousands of people are expected to turn out in protest against the Tories and their plans for leaving the European Union.

A police spokesman said: “We’ve made it clear we will do to facilitate the protesters, because that is their right, but if it gets into intimidation, then obviously we will step in.” The conference-goers will be confronted by thousands of protesters in a mass demonstration

organised by the People’s Assembly Against Austerity. Police say there will be more armed officers visible than when the party last came to Manchester in 2015, following the terror attack in May. The People’s Assembly’s national secretary, Sam Fairbairn,

says that thousands of people will be bussed in from across the country for a centrepiece march in Manchester city centre on Monday. Sam said: “Why they think it is appropriate that Manchester is a place to hold their conference and not be met with opposition I

don't know,” he said. It’s only a few weeks since Manchester Arena reopened following the May 22nd suicide bombing and the current terror threat level stands at severe. Continued page 2
