PROJECT DESCRIPTION
GATSBY’S JOURNEY
TO BEGIN WITH...
FIRST AND FOREMOST, THIS LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE PROJECT IS A SOLUTION. THE INTERVENTIONS I’VE DESIGNED, ALTHOUGH INTEGRAL TO THE PROJECT, SIMPLY FORM SITES OF INTEREST ON WHAT IS AN EXPLORATORY JOURNEY ABOVE THE CITY, MANIFESTED IN A CONVENIENT STAIRWAY TO KELBURN CAMPUS.
FOR ME, GOOD DESIGN STARTS WITH A GOOD COLOUR SCHEME. THE MAJORITY OF THIS PROJECT IS PRESENTED IN BLACK WHITE AND GOLD. BLACK AND WHITE REFLECT FOR ME THE NATURE OF JAY GATSBY - A MAN WITH TWO SIDES, AND THE GOLD REPRESENTS THE OPULENCE AND GRANDEUR OF THE ERA GATSBY THRIVED IN.
THE JOURNEY UPHILL IS A METAPHOR FOR JAY GATSBY’S JOURNEY THROUGH LIFE - FROM POVERTY AND DISADVANTAGE, TO SOARING HEIGHTS OF SUCCESS, TO THE HUMBLING REALITY OF THE INSIGNIFICANCE OF A HUMAN LIFE, THE DIFFERENT SITES SHOWCASED ALONGSIDE THEIR LANDSCAPE INTERVENTIONS TELL GATSBY’S STORY IN METAPHOR. ALTHOUGH THIS PATHWAY’S PRIMARY USE WOULD BE AS A CONVENIENT WAY OF CLIMBING THE KELBURN HILL, PRACTICALITY ASIDE, THE INTENTION IS ALSO TO TAKE PEOPLE ON A SHORT PATH OF ISOLATED SELF REFLECTION, TO EXPERIENCE A REPRESENTATION OF THE WAVELENGTH OF LIFE IN A HIGHLY CONDENSED, 2-METRE-WIDE JOURNEY - STRUGGLE, REWARD, REFLECTION. FROM DEPTH, TO PEAK, TO PLATEAU.
THE INTENTION THE INTENTION OF THIS LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE PROJECT WAS TO CREATE AN EXPERIENCE - AN IMAGINATIVE JOURNEY MANIFESTED IN A PHYSICAL JOURNEY. THIS DESIRE FOR THE INTENTION OF “JOURNEYING” LED TO ME CHOOSING KELBURN HILL AS A SITE, WHERE THERE WAS POTENTIAL FOR A JOURNEY UP OR DOWN THE STEEP HILLSIDE.
1. DEPTH THE FIRST SECTION OF THE LANDSCAPE PROJECT IS A STAIRWAY UP THE SIDE OF THE HILL. THE STAIRWAY REPRESENTS GATSBY’S STRUGGLE IN THE EARLY PART OF HIS LIFE. THE STAIRWAY EVENTUALLY REACHES THE TREECANOPY HEIGHT AND THE USER IS SUDDENLY FLOATING ABOVE THE EARTH, SUSPENDED IN BRANCHES, LEAVES AND SKY.
2. PEAK AFTER CLIMBING THE HILLSIDE AND GRADUALLY APPROACHING THE TOP, THE USER ARRIVES AT A SMALL LOOKOUT WITH INCREDIBLE VIEWS OVER WELLINGTON CITY. THIS REPRESENTS THE HEIGHTS OF SUCCESS IN GATSBY’S LIFE. I CHOSE THE SITE BECAUSE OF ITS BREATHTAKING VIEW AND ISOLATION FROM THE BUSINESS AND CLUTTER OF BOTH THE UNIVERSITY AND CITY.
3. PLATEAU AFTER ANOTHER SHORT WALK, THE USER REACHES THE TOP OF THE HILL - THE PLATEAU. I CHOSE TO DESIGN A SMALL GARDEN AT THE TOP TO REPRESENT THE PEACE AND SOLITUDE THAT COMES WITH REFLECTING UPON ONE’S OWN JOURNEY - AS GATSBY IS FORCED TO DO IN HIS OWN LIFE. THE CENTREPIECE OF THE GARDEN IS A STEEL SCULPTURE THAT ACTS AS A MIRROR - LITERAL REFLECTION.
STYLE AND PROCESS I STARTED DESIGNING BY SKETCHING THE SITES AND CONCEPTING IDEAS OF HOW TO UNLOCK THEIR POTENTIAL. THIS MOVED INTO DEVELOPING OF THE INTERVENTIONS THROUGH DIGITAL MODELLING, AND RESOLVED WITH RENDERING THE MODELS INTO PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE LANDSCAPE. THE ARCHITECTURAL STYLE IS SIMPLE AND SOLID. THE PATHWAY TAKES GENTLE CURVES, BUT THERE IS A STRAIGHT GEOMETRIC EDGE REPRESENTED THROUGHOUT BY TALL, SQUARE, DISCONNECTED BALUSTERS. THE MIRROR SCULPTURE AT SITE 3 IMITATES THE WOODEN BALUSTERS, VERTICALLY FRAGMENTED AS A SERIES OF STEEL POLES. THE MAJOR MATERIALS USED ARE PRE-CAST CONCRETE, LOCAL TIMBER, AND HIGHLY-POLISHED STAINLESS STEEL. THEY ARE ALL OF A STRONG AND STURDY NATURE, WHICH REPRESENTS GATSBY’S RESOLUTE ATTITUDE AND DETERMINATION THROUGHOUT HIS LIFE.
