INTRODUCTION ANDREW JONES STUDENT ARCHITECT
I am interested in an architectural internship, which will allow me to work and learn alongside industry professionals. I am confident, inquisitive and eager to learn new skills. In addition, I am excited in adding professional tools and tricks into my own design process to further my education as an aspiring architect. I am currently starting my Masters of SOCIAL MEDIA

P I N N A C L E S S H E LT E R The following project was an investigation into curiosity and adventure, in a time of seemingly mundane civil architecture, the aim of this project was to provoke a sense of adventure and exploration through architecture. The structures simple program of a shelter allows the occupant to use it how they see fit, encouraging people to sit, walk, climb or pass by. The project’s longevity is up to the natural movement of the Nambung dune system, that will slowly turn the shelter into a ruin and eventually cover the whole structure up. Like the pinnacles the structure sits next to it will eventually be uncovered and have a new purpose again. The project is situation in the Nambung National Park and is away from typical foot traffic. A small sun shelter guides the way to the shelter like a clue, creating curiosity and feeding the sense of adventure and exploration.

K I B E R A S LU M P R O J E C T This project aimed to create an accessible modular housing system that replace parts of the Kibera slum in Nairobi, Kenya. The population of the slums are famously entrepreneurial and make the most of everything that is available to them. The design of the modules encourages the ground floor to be opened to the street and act as a shop front to create self-employment and community economy. Due to limited access into slum, the modules are made up of lightweight materials accessible in slum, that can be recycled and carried in by the local work force. Fired brick, which is created in the slum is used for the ground floor whilst recycled timber and sheet metal creates the upper story. The structure inspired by similar houses made in the slum allows a sense of familiarity and can be welcomed into the community. The sustainability of the project relies on the can-do spirit of the slum and the people pride of ownership. When proud of something you made and own the longevity and success of the project is dramatically increased.

T H E K O O R L I N Y C U LT U R A L CENTRE The Koorliny Cultural Centre was designed to create a space for and give back to the local indigenous community. Koorliny meaning walking in Noongar language describes the concept of the design. A building made for walking; patrons are encouraged into using the central internal walkway system as a means of a journey to the roof top terrace. The building located on High Street, is bold and serves to conform yet challenge the historical context of Fremantle and the colonial history it has. The Round House was used as a holding prison for aboriginal peoples and is situated close to the site. A design aims to create a new attraction for the Fremantle, a building that serves for those to tell stories and a place that they can be heard.

TORRE DE CUARENTENA The design looks at the past to inform the future, focusing on abstracting the Mediterranean apartment block and improving on its concepts through nature like and community. The Hollow nature of the tower with the aid of a large light well emphasis’s the south light through-out the building and its internals. Strategic subtractions within the façade allow morning and afternoon light to stretch into the environment. During Quarantine the human aspect focuses on the living conditions whilst in lockdown. Natural light, fresh air, an open balcony and space to work and study for every apartment was classified as essentials for every resident. The internal circulation of each floor becomes and space where residents can engage with one another creating an amphitheatre of energy, similar to that on the streets of Ourense. During lockdown the role of Agriculture is important, the term new rural is used to describe the symbiotic relationship between technology and farming. The building is surrounded by crops which are tended to all year round. Autonomous harvesters, drone sprayers continue to function during lockdown. Creating a surplus of raw ingredients and supplies. The balcony system is designed to allow for drone supply deliver catering for every apartment and medical facility. The project aims to marry the past by looking at the building environment of Ourense and the future with the innovative techniques of new rural concept.
