Culture research
In African culture, the “self” is not separate from the world, it is united and intermingled with the natural and social environment. It is through relations with one’s community and surroundings that an individual becomes a person of volition, whose actions and decisions affect the entire group rather than just oneself.
There is a Xhosa proverb that is common to all African cultures and languages, “Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu,” (“A person is a person through persons”).
Depicting the history of Africa is a challenge due to the scarcity of written sources, with many researchers having to rely solely on oral history to determine details of the continent’s past.
Notable African values include large family practice, hard work, respect for senior members of the society, extended family system, religion, value for private property, language and many others. The African family is the nucleus of existence, which places premium on children. The more children you have the more important in the society you are considered to be. Large families are considered to be important for cheap labor in the chain of production. Hard work is a trait the average African man loves to pride himself. Laziness is synonymous with a life of poverty. The type of occupation is not as important as the fact that one is engaged in something. Finally ownership of property is widely respected in Africa. To a large extent, the African exclusively equates property to land ownership. In majority of the societies, land is owned at the family level from where it is distributed to members of the family.

Next Steps Build around a tree Incremental building temporarywall_permanentwall - small scale modularity One tree to another tree - large scale modularity Fog water harvesting from roof Draw up the plan - strategy - programmatic Keep researching your own interest to the architecture framework - disasters/tree type/society type/ drone incorporation etc
Questions Drone incorporation? 500m? For now stay behind, later maybe add in
Constraints Stay behind 500m2 for now Ignore Flooding Focus to the emergency operation centre, extensions are add in
Parachute as building material - option

WHY CIRCLE? ●
●
● ●
Responding to the context - wild trees to utilise for immediate natural first-stage enclosure + as a structural and planning anchor While squares (kinda) out of context / havent got reason why in terms of conceptually Widely available trees (assuming) The system is very simple to build + sourcing local material
