From The Chair Welcome to the autumn edition of the BBBF magazine. I hope that you managed to get an opportunity to recharge your batteries over the recent Eid holidays and are ready for the final quarter of another prosperous, fascinating and, at times, frantic year. No doubt everyone will be watching very carefully, over the next few months, how the volatile financial and commodity markets will impact the Middle East region.

From Her Majesty’s Ambassador
Although the credit crunch had bitten when I wrote the last foreword three months ago, only a handful of people around the world claim to have foreseen just how bad things would get in the global financial system. I won’t add to the mass of expert comment and opinion on the situation beyond observing that so far the Gulf has got off far more lightly than the UK or the US, but even here there are problems, most notably over project finance. In the UK, the Government is pursuing the twin objectives of stabilising the financial system and mitigating the worst effects of the crisis for the British people. The Summer has been a quieter time for the
Embassy on the Trade and Investment front in that there were no major visits or events. However our Trade & Investment Section has nevertheless had a busy three months. Inquiries from UK-based companies continue to flow in fast. By the end of September, half way through the financial year, the Section was already 80% of the way to its annual target in completing market reports for British clients. In September the Section hosted the annual gathering of their counterparts from all the British Diplomatic Posts in the Gulf and colleagues from London. Susan Haird, the Deputy Chief Executive of UKTI, visited Bahrain for the Conference and had her own programme of meetings with the Ministry of Trade, the Ministry of Finance, the Governor of the Central Bank, the BCCI and a number of Bahraini and British business people. There are three significant events coming up in the autumn, all in November. The second meeting of the Bahrain British Business Council (the business to business bilateral group) will take place in London. Each
meeting will focus on a specific sector: for this one the theme will be renewable energy. The second event is the World Islamic Banking Conference in Bahrain on 2325 November. This and its sister event in London in the Summer are the major ones of their kind in the world and they present an opportunity for the UK to reinforce London‘s position as a global centre of Islamic Financial Activity. As last year there will be a British pavilion. Finally we will be attending the annual Britain in The Region event in Dubai. Last year the Bahrain stand attracted a disproportionate amount of interest.
In my last Foreword I said that there had been a drop in British imports into Bahrain in the first half of the year compared to the same period in 2007 (from £112m to £99m). We have now been able to analyse the figures in detail and I am happy to say that the difference is accounted for by a single high value sale early in 2007. If we exclude this sale, the value of this year’s imports is actually greater than last year’s. A promising trend in what remains a very competitive market. Jamie Bowden British Ambassador

Why Join The BBBF? BAHRAIN The Pearl of the Gulf has had a long standing relationship with Britain and is still a major trading partner. BRITISH Trade with Bahrain is now subject to significant competition in this era of globalisation particularly from countries in Europe and from the USA.

BUSINESS between Bahrain and Britain must be promoted in order for Britain to maintain its dominant position. The BBBF has been formed to help in whatever way it can to do this and through its close cooperation with the British Embassy seeks to promote exchange of trade and good relations between Bahrain and Britain.

BBBF - Special Interest Groups 1. Human Trafficking and the new unit at the MOI that has been setup to combat this growing inhumane crime
SIG - Security As a relatively peaceful summer comes to an end here within the GCC our focus is re-directed to the rising instances of crime be it from drugs related issues to one of the biggest rising problems “road Rage” and I make no apologies in emphasizing “Rage” of which I will come back to later in this article. As I collect my thoughts on issues outside of Bahrain for this article, that may have some impact on some of us actually here in Bahrain, the bombings in Islamabad, Delhi and this mornings breaking news out of Lebanon comes to mind. All three incidents unfortunately have resulted in many casualties, both fatal and critical, and one wonders where this will all lead, whilst at the same time, business and travel has to continue. This should really be a wake up call, after the summer holidays, for each and every one of us to review our Travel Management and Hotel Security procedures with the obvious question being to each and everyone of you who may be reading this article; “Do you know your Firm’s Procedures”. Simple check lists and wallet cards containing those all important emergency contact details are a good start but bi-annual briefings and awareness training, for those heading out to those areas of concern, are very much recommended. In fact, do you know your individual roles and responsibilities in an emergency here in Bahrain, especially in the field of Business Continuity Planning (BCP). Once again I will come back to this subject in a moment. 8

2. Hotel Security for the Traveller 3. US Visa Waiver Program 4. Increase in Stolen Cars and Car Break Ins 5. Increase in Road Rage incidents 6. Crisis Management Training – A Department of State’s perspective Tony Palys addresses the September gathering The past three months has seen the Special Interest Group (Security), although reduced in numbers due to the summer holidays, attend combined meetings with our colleagues from the Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC) and the Security Information Service for Business Overseas (SISBO). These meetings have seen us visiting the Kraft Foods facility in July, the Gulf Petrochemicals Industries Co. (GPIC) Club in August and, of course, the British Club in September. At all three locations we were not only subjected to some excellent presentations but also some excellent hospitality. Subject matter discussed at these meetings covered a wide range of subjects from doing business in a “Business Friendly” Bahrain to Regional and Local security, from Crime & Safety to conflict insights such as the Georgia - Russia conflict. Other areas of discussion were:
7. 2009 Combined Conference being held here in Bahrain Let me pick up on a couple of points mentioned but let me first reiterate on the point of Crisis Management Training which goes hand in hand with Business Continuity Planning (BCP) as mentioned earlier. We were very fortunate to be able to take advantage of The Private Sector Security Overseas Seminar (PSOS) which was taking place at the US Embassy here in Bahrain in September. This was made possible by the Embassy’s Regional Security Officer who in turn introduced Ruth Abramson the Program Specialist Crisis Management Training, at the US Department of State. This particular presentation was attended by 52 attendees from quite a diverse group of Finance, Hospitality, Media & Security professionals from around the GCC as well as Bahrain and visitors from the UK. The presentation went down very well and generated some excellent interaction from those attending.
This briefing, although not planned to be so, was well timed as the Central Bank of Bahrain had recently reviewed it’s requirements for the BCP plans of the Financial Institutions based here. This review concluded, amongst other things, the need to see BCP plans that actually included the roles and responsibilities of the actual individual members of staff, both primary and alternative, who are involved within the company’s plan. Also the testing regime must not only test all the technical aspects of the plan but also the response of the BCP Team staffing such a plan. Food for thought for those of us responsible for such things, watch this space!
Ruth Abramson at the British Club session Finally a couple of worrying points that are coming to light with reference to “Road Rage” incidents that seem to be spiraling and getting out of hand. Whereas for some people from Europe or further a field Road Rage is nothing new but here in Bahrain, or even in the Arab world, it is a relatively new phenomenon. We tend to forget the traditions and customs of our Arabic friends and colleagues when living and working in such a
changing time but remember for someone to “loose face” will never be accepted especially when driving and one just has to squeeze in at speed and without the use of indicators. Do keep in mind that the proverbial hand gesture that can, for some unknown reason, appear in front of you can sometimes be seen as more serious than the actual incident. If you somehow get caught up in such an incident and the Rage is directed at you remember to stay cool, calm and collected with all your thoughts and actions. Managers should consider staff briefings by the experts as part of the orientation process and maybe one day driving induction training to include what does one do in an incident or accident here in Bahrain. In summary, the combined meetings have worked well with some great networking opportunities with professionals that one may not normally have met. The presentations and briefings were wide and diverse which I hope quenched most tastes if the hospitality did not. Although it was the summer holidays the three meetings were attended by 106 personnel and although not all were BBBF members it is hoped that enough interest was generated to see some more professionals joining as fully fledged members.
Delegations and Firms looking at investing here in Bahrain by being available to conduct briefings and presentations if and when required. To assist us in our quest we are always looking for volunteer speakers and facilities to meet up in, and where possible, have a tour to understand the sometimes complex issues that have to be overcome before a secure environment is achieved. So if there is someone or an organisation that could volunteer to step forward to speak on:
- Risk Analysis & Assessments - Security Design - Crisis Management - Security Surveying - Money Laundering - Perimeter Protection - Crime & Safety - Building Design & Security - Traffic Stats - Access Management & Control - Travel Management - Hotel Security - Protection of Sensitive Information - Security & IT
- Manpower Selection & Leadership - Due Diligence - Corporate Security Training - Accreditation - Manned Guarding & Guarding Companies Or if there is someone or an organisation that could volunteer to step forward to offer a facility that could be used for a meeting and possible tour please contact Tony Palys at either: bbbf.sigs@gmail.com or osac.manama@gmail.com
A full house at the Crisis Management briefing.
Looking forward we now need to get back to our usual format at looking at ways where we can work along side established organisations so as to work towards “Best Practice” in the commercial world of Security and to assist, where possible, Trade Forum

robust economic growth underpinned by resilient domestic demand and increased intra-regional trade flows. The African economies continued to leverage off Asian economic growth and commodity demand, while the Middle East region continued to benefit from the high oil price and ample liquidity. Wholesale Banking delivered an outstanding performance with pre-tax profit jumping 38%. A feature of these results is the breadth and diversity of the Wholesale Banking business, which, whether viewed by product, by customer segment or by geography, is firing on all cylinders. The deal pipeline was strong as the Bank entered the second half. The number of clients generating over $5 million income increased by 60% in the first half year. Consumer Banking delivered good income growth of 15% while expenses grew 22%, reflecting the Bank’s strong investment programme in the franchise, resulting in pre-tax profit rising two per cent. Underlying double digit income growth of 10% was underpinned by continued strong growth in SME and
Wealth Management. Mr. Richard Meddings, Group Director Finance, said: “These results reflect the benefits of the significant investments we have made in our key markets and businesses in recent years, together with the value of a clear and consistent strategy. Our growth is broadbased, not concentrated on one region or business, and we have shown great resilience in uncertain times.” The Bank’s capital and liquidity position remained strong with Tier I capital at the top end of the target range at 8.5% and total capital at 14.9%. Almost 23% of the balance sheet was held in liquid assets, and the Bank was a net lender in the interbank market as at June 30. The acquisition of American Express Bank was completed earlier in February and 24 of the 48 markets were legally amalgamated in the first half. The Bank is on course to deliver in excess of the $100 million a year of cost savings we had initially expected, and double digit return on investment by 2009.

Financial Crisis - Middle East The most recent downward cycle in the global crisis is expected to put a damper on international banks’ activities in the Gulf, at least in the short term. While the fundamentals that attracted the main players to the Gulf remain in place, bankers say, the collapse of Lehman

Wealthy private investors, “shellshocked” by the crisis in the US financial system, were now expected to become more cautious and

But institutions, including sovereign wealth funds, will be looking for opportunities. “Institutional investors recognise that after a period of turmoil there will be a time when market opportunities will be great, so they are seeing what’s happening as such a period,” Mr Long told the Financial Times. Air Industry News Gulf Air launced CSR programme in September Bahrain’s national carrier, Gulf Air, unveiled its new Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) plan in September. The airline has developed an integrated programme of research, development, education and outreach focusing on three key areas; climate change and clean air, waste management and community service, with goals to support each. The comprehensive plan, which was developed through consultations with external partners including Boeing and IATA, will see the airline launch a number of initiatives in the coming months, which will improve the environment, benefit the community and improve the airlines
operational efficiency. The goals outlined in the airlines three tier approach demonstrate Gulf Air’s commitment to not only reducing its global footprint, but to driving growth by focusing on products and innovation which benefit the local community while at the same time helping to solve global challenges such as climate change. “Since its beginnings in 1950 Gulf Air has always believed in the importance of the airlines inter-relationship with the local community. As the airline has grown over 58years from a small regional airline with one route to a global enterprise operating in more than 40 countries around the world, this value
still holds true, shaping our thinking, decisions and actions,” says Gulf Air Chief Strategy Officer Tero Taskila. “The launch of our Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative reaffirms this core value and brings it to the forefront as a key driver for our business strategy along with talent management, investing for growth and financial discipline. We also believe in offering the customer choice, as people become more environmentally and socially conscious we want to ensure that as an airline we meet these needs.” Bahraini Sameer Al Saeed, an industrial engineer by qualification, who has been working with Gulf Air Human
Resources department for several years, has been appointed to set up the CSR programme. “I am honored to be spearheading a programme that influences so many people. CSR affects everyone from those who work at Gulf Air to our suppliers and customers. It’s important to the local communities where we operate and to our investors who value responsible business behaviour. It’s important to people in other parts of the world, who expect Middle Eastern companies to operate to international values and principles. And it matters to our children and future generations who expect to live in a world which respects people and nature.” commented Mr. Al Saeed.
Gulf Air to have state-of-the-art hangar in Bahrain In support of this aim, Bahrain’s national carrier Gulf Air has signed an agreement with Bahrain Real Estate Company (Edamah) to build a multi million dollar worldclass hangar at the Bahrain International Airport as part of the airline’s growth and expansion strategy. The agreement was signed on behalf of Gulf Air by Chief Executive Officer Björn Näf and Edamah CEO Ma’amoon Al Moayyed. Edamah has already identified an international firm specialised in building hangars to design and construct the complex, which is due for completion in 2011. Construction will begin next year and once completed, the facility will be able to accommodate three modern wide-body aircrafts at any time. 14 Forum
“Gulf Air is pleased to partner with Edamah and the Bahrain Airport Company (BAC) to build this state-of-the-art maintenance facility, which will make Bahrain a key aircraft maintenance hub in the region,” said Mr. Näf after the signing.
will raise the profile of the Kingdom as a key aviation hub in the region. “Our engagement with the national airline, Gulf Air, is a natural partnership aimed at significantly contributing towards the growth and development of Bahrain.”
“This world-class maintenance facility will enable Gulf Air to continue maintaining the highest safety standards as well as keep our existing and future fleet in the best condition possible. This is an important development not only for Gulf Air but for Business Friendly Bahrain and we are delighted to be able to make a contribution to the further development and diversification of the Kingdom’s economy.”
Dr. Osama Al Ali, CEO of the Bahrain Airport Company, said the growth and expansion of the national carrier will be a boon for the nation that has already established itself as the leading financial centre in the Middle East.
Edamah CEO, Mr. Al Moayyed, agreed saying this
“BAC’s main role is to spur economic development of the Kingdom of Bahrain and we are proud to support our national carrier in its development plans that will help bring the world to Bahrain and help promote the
Kingdom to the world.” Gulf Air accounts for more than 70% of the traffic to and from Bahrain International Airport and the airline has been heavily involved in the design and construction of the new international airport with aims to make it the fastest connection hub in the world. Gulf Air Deputy CEO Ismail Karimi hailed the joint effort by the three companies owned by the Bahrain Holding Company (Mumtalakat) to set up the hangar. “We at Gulf Air are very pleased that the Mumtalakat companies are supporting the growth plans of the national carrier and we are looking forward to developing the maintenance hub together with them,” said Mr. Karimi.
Air Industry News Airbus still top of the league
many floundering Western airlines. With a waiting list of up to seven years for new planes, orders are seen as a gauge of the industry’s confidence but analysts focus on deliveries since these generate short-term revenue.
According to the Reuters News Agency, Airbus sold 31 planes in September, bringing gross orders for the first nine months of the year to 785 as the European planemaker held a lead over strike-hit Boeing in new orders and deliveries. Stripping out cancellations, Airbus reported a net total of 737 aircraft orders in the first nine months.
Airbus and the Gulf Emirate negotiate an industrial offset deal, according to industry executives.
While some airlines are having second thoughts over purchases as the global economy weakens, the Airbus tally does not yet include a 55-plane purchase from Abu Dhabi-based Etihad.
The Etihad order now being finalised includes 10 Airbus A380 superjumbos, but this will be partially offset by cancellation of an earlier order for four A380s from the same airline. At first Etihad had settled for four A380s originally used for flight testing but now it wants all brand-new jets, highlighting a growing rift in fortunes between fast-expanding carriers in the oil-rich Gulf and

The deal for a net 51 planes would bring Airbus within reach of its 2008 goal of 850 orders if it enters the backlog before year-end, though other new business has slumped since July. Airbus sold no planes in August.
Ryanair set for expansion Ryanair chief executive Michael O’Leary said on Tuesday he may help create a sister company to launch a long-haul, low-cost airline, if cheap aircraft became available next year. Ryanair, Europe’s biggest lowcost carrier, would not invest in the new airline but Ryanair shareholders including himself may be invited to participate, O’Leary said. 16 Forum
“If aircraft fleet prices collapse, it is a real possibility,” O’Leary told reporters in London. “There may be the opportunity to buy a fleet of long-haul aircraft cheaply next year,” he said, adding that a collapse of a carrier may create the opportunity for such an order, which would then take a further 18 months to deliver.
Airbus delivered 34 planes in September and 104 in the third quarter, bringing deliveries for the year so far to 349 jets. Deliveries at rival Boeing have been paralysed by a production workers’ strike, now a month old. The US jetmaker said last week it had delivered 84 planes in the third quarter, down from 109 in the same quarter of 2007. The machinists strike has dampened Boeing’s hopes of recovering as the world’s largest producer of passenger jets this year, after losing the industry’s most important crown to Airbus in 2003. In the first nine months, Boeing delivered 325 aircraft and sold a net total of 623 planes, or 625 before two cancellations. Boeing had outsold Airbus in annual new plane orders in both 2006 and 2007, as its Several airlines have gone bankrupt worldwide, hit by a combination of high oil prices and faltering economies, but analysts see Dublin-based Ryanair’s position strong as its costs are lower and cash reserves higher than most peers. O’Leary said there would be no direct connection between the two airlines except that the long-haul one may want to use Ryanair’s European
successful 787 Dreamliner dominated the fast-growing market for mid-sized and long-range twin-jets. Both manufacturers have record backlogs representing seven or eight years of production but have predicted a slowdown in demand and some cancellations or deferrals as airlines, already battered by high oil prices, grapple with lower traffic and a weak economy. In September, India’s Kingfisher Airlines cancelled two orders for the longerrange Airbus aircraft, the A340-500 worth $240 million each, Airbus figures showed. It downgraded a further five A340-500s to the A330-200, which is smaller and has a shorter range but which needs less fuel and maintenance since it has two engines instead of the A340’s four. The revision represents a list price saving of $300 million. Airbus said it had received cancellations for a total of 48 planes so far in 2008. Not all the cancellations are linked to the faltering economy, with some airlines cancelling one type of plane and switching to later models to save fuel costs. bases as hubs. O’Leary has said in the past he was looking into plans for a nofrills transatlantic airline, without providing any details. He reiterated that Ryanair expected to break even for the current year if oil stayed at $100 per barrel and yields fell by 5%. Ryanair remained unhedged for its fuel needs for the fourth quarter of its fiscal year, O’Leary said.
Enriching lives: the new face of loyalty programmes He points out that while more than 60 per cent of point redemption takes place in the travel and hospitality sector, the company has also linked with several retailers to provide an even wide range of redemption opportunities. Membership Rewards is linked with the internationally recognised charities of UNICEF, Save the Children and Red Crescent Society (Bahrain), enabling Cardmembers to donate their points for a noble cause.
We live in a new world of mass affluence, where more people have access to luxury goods and elite services than ever before. Yet, reaching out to this fast-growing customer base, and retaining their loyalty, has never been more challenging – precisely because luxury is so much more accessible than it used to be. Today, just about every company employs loyalty programmes to attract and retain customers and to gain valuable insights into consumer habits, generally offering token rewards in return. Loyalty marketing seeks to ensure that repeat customers are treated especially well. Consider that, as far back as 1929, US food company Betty Crocker introduced coupons that could be redeemed for items such as flatware. The coupons were printed on the outside of packages, and were meant to be cut out, saved and posted to the company in exchange for free knives, forks and spoons. 18 Forum
According to Premal Patel, Senior Director - Marketing for American Express Middle East and North Africa, loyalty programmes are today treading a new path. It is no longer about just a free toaster or a free dinner voucher, but more about creating a memorable experience for individuals and customising the rewards in line with their lifestyles, he adds. “Especially in the luxury segment, the nature of rewards is becoming more unique. We tend to see rewards that are more experiential; that provide not just material benefits that anyone can purchase, but also forge emotional connections. This is what today’s new affluent class is seeking most of all: intense moments of pleasure, joy or adventure; the delight of the truly new.” With over 30 years of experience in catering to high-end customers, designing premium rewards comes naturally to American Express. The company,
which offers premium payment solutions, has enhanced its focus on creating the strongest loyalty programme in the region. Recognised globally as the strongest and most recognised card-based loyalty programme, the American Express Membership Rewards programme is creating lifeenriching experiences for its customers. With no limit to earning points and no expiry of points, this programme is unique in the industry and is at the cutting-edge of the loyalty business. “For many companies a loyalty programme is simply a short-term value-addition proposition for customers. But there is a world of difference between launching a brand new programme and making it work for the long term. For American Express however, our Membership Rewards programme is a strategic priority and we don’t see it as an expense or as a short-term promotion,” says Patel.
“Consider this, for every 1,000 Membership Rewards points donation, American Express will pay US$5 directly to the Cardmembers charity of choice. A mere US$100 can buy 200 fruit tree seedlings to help a village that has lost its crop. By being part of a loyalty programme today, we can make a big difference to society”, says Patel, underlining that loyalty programmes of today not only enrich one’s own life, but also that of many.

Bahrain Construction Update Monorail plan approved
Mott MacDonald is design engineer for new 44 storey tower in Bahrain Mott MacDonald has been appointed by Ithmaar Development Company as design engineer on a new tower building valued at around £100 million. The tower which will contain offices, residential apartments as well as a fourstar hotel is to be built on reclaimed land in Al Seef District and set to become one of the tallest buildings in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
Newspapers across the region reported early in October that Bahrain’s Government has approved a monorail train network to ease traffic flow. A cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa has approved the landmark scheme to overhaul public transportation by introducing the ‘Monorail Metro’. The Works Ministry has already been commissioned to conduct an extensive feasibility study into the first phase of the project. “The initiative stems from the Government’s resolve to decongest Bahrain’s roads and pre-empt mounting traffic

challenges,’ Cabinet Affairs Minister Shaikh Ahmed bin Ateyatala Al Khalifa said. The proposed monorail is the brainchild of a consortium of world-renowned firms who have studied the plight and character of Bahrain’s traffic network and come out with a string of options and alternatives. Malaysian firm Scomi Engineering is conducting a feasibility study for the threephase project and global projects vice-president V Kanesan told one reporter that work could start within the next two years. He added that the entire project, measuring 83km, could be completed by 2030. These figures are contrary to those reported in a UAE daily newspaper in September which claimed Pakistan had agreed to provide 15,000 to 20,000 workers a month to Bahrain. Mr Gilani discounted the reported figures and said that although a formal agreement to exchange labour between the two nations was in the pipeline, nothing was expected to be finalised until the end of the year.
Mott MacDonald’s project team are to provide designs for all civil, structural, mechanical and electrical engineering. We have some new additions to our Committee – welcome to Michael (Rolly) Rollings as Events Secretary and Zane Thirlwall who will be our Business Development focal point. We also said our goodbyes to BBA Secretary, Donna Steven who has moved on to Germany – a big thanks to Donna for all her hard work on our behalf. Fortunately, we have quickly found an excellent replacement in Pamela Baxter who has already started to make her mark on the office administration. It has been a quiet year on the business front but in October we hope to re-start our successful series of roles as foreign diplomats and participate in a simulated session of an intergovernmental organisation. Participants research a country, take on roles as diplomats, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult, and then develop solutions to world problems. The Silent Diseases
So you don t feel well. You have a headache, or a pain in the side or a twinge in the neck, you get out of breath walking upstairs, have indigestion or heartburn, or toothache or maybe you can t sleep. The thought of going to the office makes you feel worse. So what do you do now? Rush to the Doctor for a cure, take a painkiller or do you ignore it until it goes away? Quite often we are our own Doctors and ignore those little niggles. Well that s fine as no-one knows your body better than you. But how do you know if you have something that is more serious than just a niggle? That depends on your own approach to life, whether you have been ill in the past and especially how well you know your body. In these days when the standard of medical care is excellent in most parts of the world, and information on illnesses, diet, exercise and behaviour is freely available on the internet, we should be more aware of health warning signs. But there are some serious illnesses that do not give a warning. These are sometimes referred to as Silent Killers.

In an increasingly ageing society, medicine, hygiene and nutrition have reduced the impact of acute and life-threatening illnesses. So we are living longer, but the chance of developing or contracting a chronic illness is increasing and sometimes we have no knowledge of the illness until it s too late. Let’s consider some of these. The first three are common for men and women. High Blood Pressure or hypertension Blood pressure is a measure of the force with which blood is pumped through your body. High blood pressure is when you have a reading of 140/ 90 or higher. Unrecognised high blood pressure can be deadly and the first sign might be when you have a heart attack or stroke. Quite often you may have no symptoms at all and even if you do have signs such as headaches, blurred vision or dizziness but there are many other reasons for these , so it can be easy to ignore them. So the simple solution is get it checked regularly. High Cholesterol Cholesterol is the fat that floats through your blood
and clogs up your arteries if you re not careful. But we need it in moderate amounts. The danger is that high cholesterol levels can lead to cardiovascular disease and heart attack and these can come without warning. You will have heard about the good (HDL) and the bad (LDL). Whilst your total cholesterol reading should be 200 mg/dl (6.5 mmol/L) or lower you need to check the individual readings to assess the overall risk. Diabetes If you are diabetic your body does not make enough insulin so you can t convert glucose into the energy fuel you need. You can get diabetes at any age and the Type 2 Diabetes, as it is known, increases with age. The danger is that you may not know you have it. Symptoms are slow and gradually appear so you get used to feeling thirsty and a little tired. You think it s normal for your age but if you leave it untreated for a year then blurred vision or foot ulcers will force you to go a Doctor. So if you do feel thirsty for no reason or are tired get a simple blood test and urine test to rule it out. The next two are more common among ladies Osteoporosis In this condition bones become more porous and weaken making them more likely to fracture or break. This occurs naturally with age as the body loses more bone than it makes. It can also be caused by lack of physical activity, lack of Vitamin D or low calcium. But the worrying aspect is that there are no obvious, physical signs of osteoporosis, because no
one can see the bones getting thinner . It can go unnoticed for years without causing any symptoms. Quite often the first sign is when you fall and break a bone. So if you are concerned the answer is to take a bone density test. Thyroidism The thyroid gland is the gland in your throat that helps control growth and metabolism. If it s under active you ll feel tired and lethargic and put on weight and if it s overactive you ll lose weight. Again it may not be obvious what is wrong so if you re unsure get it checked. And the last one is definitely for Gentlemen. Prostate Cancer The prostate is a small gland beneath your bladder. It s now the most common cancer among men with nearly 160,000 men in Europe diagnosed with prostate cancer each year. Again the warning signs on the body are not always apparent so to be sure if you are over the age of 50 you should take a simple blood test to check if your prostate is working normally. The prostate produces protein and by taking a Prostate Specific Antigen Test (PSA) you can find out if there is anything abnormal. So look after your health and take the tests. Remember preventing an illness is a lot easier than curing it.
The Last Gasp From the 1st October in the UK, shocking pictures highlighting the danger of smoking are to be put on cigarette packets to try and persuade people to kick the habit. The graphic images, which include the corpse of a lung cancer victim and a tumour growing from a victim’s neck, will be shown on all tobacco products by 2009. It is part of the latest Government campaign to try and cut the rates of smoking. Alan Johnson, the Health Secretary, said the drive will “potentially save thousands of lives and others will be spared the misery of watching family and friends die prematurely from smoke related illnesses.”
One picture shows a baby in an incubator, warning that smoke can harm children. Another warns that smoking causes impotence by showing a drooping cigarette to symbolise erectile dysfunction. The move has been welcomed by anti-smoking campaigners who hope the images will be as shocking as possible. Jean King, director of tobacco control at Cancer Research UK, said: “The evidence from Canada, Brazil and elsewhere is clear. “Graphic picture warnings inform people of the risks of smoking and help encourage people to reduce their smoking or quit altogether.”
The legislation followed after smoking became banned in public places and one year after the minimum age for buying tobacco in England and Wales was increased from 16 to 18.
FOREST, the smokers’ lobby group, say the images were “gratuitously offensive” and claimed smokers were victimised by the new rules and accused Government of targeting a minority group.

News from the BIC Australian V8 ‘Desert 400’ Supercars returns to Bahrain for the third time Gripping action in 2007
Motorsport fans, families and friends can look forward to another great weekend of excitement at Bahrain International Circuit, this November 6-7-8, as the Desert 400 returns for the third consecutive year. Having been voted “Best V8 Event of the Year” in 2007, and beat all of last year’s host circuits in Australasia, BIC will be hosting its second largest international race, the famous Australian “Desert 400 V8 Supercars”. The beginning was in Adelaide, 2006 As the Gulf Air Bahrain Formula One Grand Prix came to a close this April, preparations at BIC began immediately to host the Australian V8 event from the 6th to 8th November – the only
round out of 15 outside Australia and New Zealand. BIC first achieved this precedent in November 2006 when it hosted the first “Desert 400”, after holding a promotional launch event for the Australian community who give greater importance to the Australian race than to Formula One. BIC’s move to send a large delegation to Adelaide during the championship tournament in November 2006 and the addition of a huge Bahraini heritage tent at the Adelaide Circuit, captured the imagination of the Australian public. This resulted in high international ticket sales for the first “V8 Supercars” in Bahrain when hundreds of Australians from around the world came to witness the first Australian race to be held on Bahraini soil.
In 2007, BIC hosted the Australian V8 “Desert 400” race for the second time. This event witnessed the determination of the participating teams and competing drivers of both Ford and Holden cars to win the title of the only race held outside of Australasia. After three days of excitement, fierce competition and entertainment for more than 35,000 spectators attending the event, Mark Winterbottom of the “Ford Performance Racing” team triumphed. He won the title of the “Desert 400” race after winning the first and second races and coming third in the final race. Best Race in 2007 The positive impressions voiced by the teams and drivers about the second ”Desert 400” in Bahrain led the Australian V8 Championship to award the ’Best Event of the Year’ prize to BIC. Championship officials stated that the “Desert 400” received this award for being the most exciting and competitive tournament in the 2007 season, beating the other 13 tournaments. Martin Whitaker, Chief Executive Officer at Bahrain International Circuit, said, “This award is a great achievement for Bahrain. BIC has proved its eligibility among a large number of circuits that host various legs of the Australian V8 Supercars Championship Series. Most of the Australian circuits have an attendance of more than

In light of these facts, BIC bringing this award back to Bahrain is fantastic.” “Asian Porsche Cup” leads support races Australian V8 Desert 400 will be a special date for thrill seekers and racing fanatics to watch their favourite international drivers compete. The V8 race weekend will see the ‘Desert 400’ round headline the Australian festival, a celebration that is held every year at BIC. This November 6-7-8 spectators can come and watch top international Australian drivers compete as Bahrain’s finest also go head-to-head in the sidelining events. Based on the success of the marine e-cargo system in the UAE since its launch one year ago, RSA has implemented the service in Oman and Saudi Arabia, as these markets play a key role in the company’s future growth plans in the region.
RSA Launches new Marine e-Cargo system in Bahrain RSA recently announced the launch of its marine e-cargo system in Bahrain. The e-cargo system, a comprehensive web-based Marine Cargo certificate production facility, is one of the fastest systems of its kind in the Middle East at the moment. The system, which combines cutting-edge technology with a fast turnaround time, will expand on the success of RSA’s marine portfolio in Bahrain and thus expand the company’s commercial business. Marine insurance has proven to be a highly successful commercial insurance segment over the past few years. The marine cargo market in Bahrain is worth BD7,083,000 and the market is growing at an annual rate of approximately 21% driven primarily by the construction
boom and the establishment of Bahrain as a trading hub. Mark Cooper, CEO for RSA KSA & Bahrain commented: “Marine insurance will play a key role in our business over the next three years. Historically, our marine portfolio has been very profitable, due in large part to the increase in construction and engineering projects in Bahrain, as well as the significant growth in trade.” “RSA felt that there was a definite gap in the market for a leading distribution platform that was easy for brokers to use, and we feel that the new e-cargo solution fits this need perfectly.” RSA’s new marine e-cargo system went live in September with the signing of a broker agreement with
World Memory competition back in Bahrain With registrations now closed for the 17th World Memory Championships, the event is already making history by being the largest international gathering ever of the world’s top memorisers. Seventy four competitors are registered from fifteen countries. The largest team is coming from China where the benefits of Mind Sport of Memory are being taken very seriously. Second largest team is from Germany where for over a decade, the current reigning memory champion, Dr Gunther Karsten, has championed the sport and has been an inspiration to a new generation of memorisers. The UK and Nigerian teams are next in
size, both fielding teams of 6. The USA has four competitors, its largest team to date. Much interest has been generated by the decision of two top competitors to come out of retirement to compete once again. Former two times World Memory Champion Andi Bell from the UK, and top women’s competitor, and World Silver Medallist, Astird Plessl. Interestingly the last time they all met for competition was at the 2003 World Memory Championships. In that competition the scores were Andi Bell - 6701, Astird Plessl - 6673, Ben Pridmore - 6367 and Dr Gunther
Karsten - 6276. It is anybody’s call what will happen when they all meet once again for the world’s most comprehensive test of memory. The contrast between the rigid discipline of the German champion and the almost happy go lucky preparations of Pridmore could hardly be greater. While Karsten spent hundreds of hours in the gym before last years contest working towards his ideal of a healthy mind in a healthy body, Pridmore could be seen in his local Derby pub, singing karaoke and quaffing pints of bitter. However, deep down Pridmore is a memory genius whose cunningly thought out systems enabled
him this summer to smash the world record for the fastest time ever for memorisation of a single deck of shuffled cards. If 25 seconds for such a feat might be considered the 4 minute mile of the brain, then Pridmore’s time of 24.68 seconds comfortably smashed it. This earned Pridmore another starring TV role in the ITV series on genius, as well as a huge write-up in the SUN newspaper, a journal not generally noted for its concentration on matters cerebral. The eyes of the world will be on the Gulf Hotel in Bahrain from October 24th to 26th. Forum

Bahrain News TNT’s new tagline marks new era of clarity ‘sure we can spells out long-time unspoken brand promise Just do it. Connecting people. What you just read aren’t two random phrases. They are, in fact, some of the most powerful words in global business today. Chances are you not only recognise them, but that you can identify the companies and products behind them. You probably knew, for instance, that it’s Nike urging you to get out there and just do it, assuring you that its sportswear will help you conquer any physical challenge. And whether your mobile phone is made by Nokia or not, you know that the Finnish electronics giant makes all kinds of devices for connecting people. Good taglines define value, evoke emotion. Those two phrases – each from a leader in its industry – demonstrate the power of a good tagline. Not only do they pack a lot of information about a company’s business into a few words, good taglines can also evoke a bit of emotion on the part of consumers. Think about it for a moment. Don’t you have some clear feelings about each of those companies and their products right now? Simply reading those lines can influence ideas and feelings. The companies behind those lines are able to capture consumers’ attention because they have 44 Forum
successfully defined the value they offer, and they clearly and consistently communicate that value in all they do. While taglines are just one way of sending the message, they are perhaps the most visible one. TNT’s new tagline integral to company identity Achieving that high level of brand clarity in the minds of customers is a goal shared by thousands of companies in today’s crowded global marketplace. Your company is probably no exception, and according to Ahmed Gamal - Country General Manager, neither is TNT. “That’s why we introduced a new tagline – ‘sure we can’ – which now appears alongside our logo, replacing the previous business description “Global Express and Mail,” said Gamal. ‘Sure we can’ sums up can-do attitude, ambition “Like those other successful phrases, TNT’s new tagline captures the essence who we are as a company,” he said. “It sums up the can-do attitude TNT people have always demonstrated, and it reflects TNT’s ambitions” to: · expertly run its global networks · renowned customer experience · lead the industry’s environmental efforts through its work with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). Above all, said Gamal, ‘sure we can’ conveys TNT’s

promise to customers. “It’s a clear statement of the value we offer: a ‘can-do’ approach to everything we do in our work, everyday.” While the new tagline can already be seen on TNT trucks and planes, as well as the company’s recently refreshed website at www.tnt.com, it will be unveiled more widely in the first quarter of 2009. That’s when, according to Gamal, TNT will launch a global brand campaign aimed at communicating its value to the entire world. Reality check: Words match deeds Gamal may not be ready to place ‘sure we can’ in the league of Nike’s ‘Just do it’ quite yet, but he is convinced that the tagline passes the reality test. “‘Sure we can’ is not just a cute slogan.” The line was derived from in-depth research into what distinguishes TNT from other express providers. “The research revealed that our ‘can-do’ attitude makes us unique among our competitors,” he said. Customer feedback confirms those findings. The results are consistent with those TNT has been getting for years from both internal and independent customer surveys. That consistency, said Gamal, is what makes TNT sure its message is on target. “The concept of ‘sure we can’ is not new at TNT” he said. “What is new is that now we’re talking about it. We’ve lived it for years. Now we’re also putting it into words.”
The 44 year old former beauty queen and self styled pit-bull-withlipstick has put a previously unknown author into the top 20 of the best seller list. Kaylene Johnson’s book “Sarah: How a small town girl Turned Alaska’s Political Establishment on its ear” has been rushed into print to meet the demand to find out more about someone who could become the world’s most powerful woman. Sarah Palin was an unknown to the vast majority of Americans before John McCain chose her as his running mate and since then the world has been clamouring for more. Attractive, conservative, Yankee-ish and much, much younger than McCain, Palin has helped to change the feel of the entire presidential campaign. At 159 pages it’s an easy book to tackle and no more than a account of her history. The book may not change your life but standyby - she might.
