From The Chair
Khalid Al-Zayani OBE Chairman Welcome to the autumn edition of the BBBF magazine. We have all enjoyed a long summer break but now we are back to business as demonstrated at our well attended lunch in September. Thank you for your attendance and support as ever. We were pleased to welcome Mr. Alan Rutt, country director of the British Council, as the keynote speaker at our first lunch of the season. Mr. Rutt updated the members about the role of the British Council in the community during Bahrain UK 200 anniversary year. Both companies and individual members were invited to participate in supporting the British Council s Bahrain UK 200 activities around the theme of Art and Disability. Mr. Rutt also highlighted the great opportunity provided by this initiative to promote, support, inspire and contribute to the development of special needs children in Bahrain, as well as support the British Council s mission to push creative boundaries and seek out more diverse collaborations in the local community. The ongoing Bicentenary
C e l e b r a t i o n s commemorating the bilateral relationship between the UK and Bahrain are well progressing with the BBBF members actively partaking in numerous activities. To date there have been 134 events this year and the aim is to hold at least 200 events, covering a wide range of sectors and themes, including business, education, heritage, sports, entrepreneurship, food, and fashion to name a few. To find out how you can get involved and to see the latest updates and events to come, please refer to the new website wwwbahrainuk200.com. In September, we were pleased to host a reception together with the BCCI for Dr. Liam Fox, UK s Secretary of State for International Trade, on his visit to Bahrain to boost bilateral trade and investment ties between the two kingdoms. Dr. Fox emphasised Bahrain s strategic and economic importance to the UK, and highlighted the UK government s commitment to fully capitalise on key trade and investment opportunities through fair and free trade for maximum benefit for both countries. This autumn we give a warm welcome to the forum to Christian Syme who has taken over from Heather Hopper as the New Head of UKTI. We are positive Christian will contribute to the strengthening of ties and trade between Britain and Bahrain as enthusiastically as Heather did.

For the last quarter of the year we have an exciting calendar of meetings and events lined up for you. On Friday November 18 we have our annual Poppy Ball, where we join forces with our partners BBA (British Business Association Eastern province of Saudi Arabia) from across the bridge. A very well supported event in aid of three charities (The Royal Chelsea Hospital Building Fund, The Earl Haig Poppy Fund and The Bahrain Mother & Child Welfare Society), the Poppy Ball is one the highlights of the year s social calendar in Bahrain. I look forward to seeing many of you at the Poppy Ball for what shall be a wonderful evening of commemoration and remembrance - and a lot of fun - all for a good cause. Also in November, we will once again host the Chelsea Pensioners to mark the Armistice Day. The Chelsea Pensioners will attend the laying of the wreath to commemorate fallen comrades, as well as do their usual busy round of appointments and visits to schools and clubs in Bahrain. No doubt you will see them out and about. Please give a warm welcome to them along the way. In December we hope you will be able to join us for our traditional Christmas lunch where we will be joined by HMA Simon Martin CMG. Simon will update us with his annual review of business activities for 2016 and his
musings and thoughts for the business year that lies ahead for us in 2017. Our SIG s continue to drive forward and I am delighted to announce in November we will see the launch of the new Women in Business special interest group. The SIG s continue to offer our members and guests a valuable medium for exchanging industry specific ideas. I would like to thank everyone that has supported the SIG s with enthusiasm throughout the year. I would like to sincerely thank our sponsors for their unwavering support of the forum. Their continued backing and generous encouragement allows us the financial security to increase the number of initiatives and enhances the quality and quantity of business networking events that our members benefit from and enjoy immensely. The BBBF continues to work to create and sustain a favourable business environment and strives to assist both the UK and Bahrain to benefit and enhance the common economic interests of the forum s member companies. We hope that you enjoy this Forum edition. The committee as always looks forward to seeing you and your guests at up and coming BBBF meetings and events. Kind regards
Khalid Al-Zayani

Bahrain British Business Forum The Poppy comes to Bahrain. BBBF to Host Britain s Chelsea Pensioners
Sponsored by British Airways, EuroMotors, Gulf Brands International and The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel
Ever wondered why so many British Ex-pats are wearing the red poppy? It is to commemorate Armistice which is when the First World War ended at 11.00am on the 11th Day of the 11th Month. It is remembered on Remembrance Day throughout the world and the Kingdom of Bahrain is no exception. This year s Poppy Ball sees us celebrating 200 years of bilateral relations between Bahrain and Britain. During the Chelsea Pensioners visit, these gentlemen will be wearing their distinctive red uniform. Our distinguished visitors will be attending many functions, including school visits, British Embassy functions and visits to local places of interest. The highlight of the visit will be laying a wreath at a Memorial service and as guests of honour at the Poppy Ball at the Dipomat Radisson Blu Hotel on 18th November. The Chelsea Pensioners who will be visiting represent a formidable Charity which is The Royal Hospital, Chelsea in England and is the largest home in the UK for veteran soldiers. The Chelsea Pensioners, who reside and are cared for at the hospital, each s urrender their army pension on admission. However, the costs of running the hospital far outweighs this income and as the hospital is independent of Government it relies h eavily on public funds to operate on a daily basis. In order to comply with legislation on care standards, the hospital urgently needs to upgrade many of its facilities. To fund this development plan, the Chelsea Pensioners Appeal was launched in late 2003 with the aim of raising £35 million In Scotland, the Earl Haig fund raises money through its annual Poppy Appeal and other donations to support ex-service veterans. The Edinburgh-based Lady Haig s Poppy Factory employs 24 disabled ex-Service men who hand-assemble Scotland s poppies and wreaths and is supported by the Earl Haig Fund Scotland. Each year over four million poppies and 7,000 wreaths are produced.

From Her Majesty's Ambassador
They say that summer is the quiet period in the Gulf with many Bahrainis enjoying the ambient August sunshine in the UK, and many others dodging the heat and humidity at home. Sophie and I found ourselves in the Lake District, a world away from deserts, seas and skyscrapers. When I returned to the Bahraini summer it was as an Ambassador representing a different Britain: one that would no longer be part of the EU; with a new Prime Minister at the helm
of a new Government including Boris Johnson as Foreign Secretary and Dr Liam Fox as International Trade Secretary. Britain is leaving the European Union. But, as Liam Fox told business leaders here last month, it doesn t mean that we are leaving Europe. The Prime Minister has made very clear that Britain is not shrinking but becoming more global: confidently
and energetically engaging with trusted and historical partners around the world, including the Gulf. And we are very well placed: we are the fifthlargest economy in the world, and we will continue to be a permanent member of the UN Security Council, OECD, NATO, the Commonwealth, the G7, the G20; determined to live up to our traditions as an outwardlooking, champion of free trade and of the rules-based international system. Last month I participated in a BBBF panel discussion on the Challenges and Opportunities Following Brexit at Manama s Capital Club. There were over a hundred business and media attendees. Such significant turnout shows the keen interest from the
business community here in both the short-term challenges of Brexit, and in the opportunities it presents for the future. The atmosphere was overwhelmingly positive about the UK-Bahrain business relationship, Bahrainis inclination to see the UK as a home-from-home in Europe, and a preference for doing business through London.
Indeed, this summer I was lucky enough to be present for the signing of the $900 million contract between Gulf Air and Rolls Royce, to supply engines for the new widebody Dreamliners that Gulf Air will be flying to London more than to any other long haul destination. And while the commercial property market across London in particular is still coming to terms with Brexit, there has been a significant upswing in interest to purchase UK residential property from Bahrain and the Gulf since the referendum. On a smaller scale, but also important, I recently helped to launch British company Swan s new retro-styled range of kitchen equipment. Swan see Bahrain as the launchpad for their British-designed products across the Gulf. I envisage more BritishBahrain partnerships like this one emerging in the post-Brexit era. But, of course, Brexit is not the only thing that has happened this summer. Our Embassy is busy planning upcoming visits, in particular the visit of their Royal Highnesses the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall to Bahrain: surely the crowning event of our 200th anniversary. UK s Secretary of State for International Trade, Liam Fox, visits Bahrain to boost bilateral trade ties On Sunday 18 September, The Rt Hon Liam Fox MP, the UK s Secretary of State for International Trade and President of the Board of Trade, visited Bahrain to discuss boosting bilateral trade and investment ties as well as explore opportunities for further economic and commercial cooperation.
Salman bin Hamad Al-Khalifa, the Prime Minister HRH Sheikh Khalifa bin Salman Al-Khalifa, the Minister of Industry and Commerce HE Zayed bin Rashid Al-Zayani, the CEO of the Bahrain Economic Development Board Mr. Khalid Al-Rumaihi, and other key Ministers and business people.

with BCCI Chairman Khalid Almoayed, BBBF Committee members and other key business leaders in Bahrain. Dr. Fox reiterated Bahrain s strategic and economic importance to the UK, and thereby the UK government s commitment to fully capitalise on key trade and investment opportunities through fair and free trade for maximum benefit for both countries, underpinned by the 200 year bilateral relationship.
200th Anniversary of Bilateral Relations between the Kingdom of Bahrain and United Kingdom. The year 2016 marks the 200th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Friendship in 1816, between the Kingdom of Bahrain and the United Kingdom. Two decades of bilateral relations of cultural, diplomatic, economic and political exchange prevails to this day. Historically, Bahrain and Britain have maintained strong bilateral relations since 1607, dating back over 400 years, when Queen Elizabeth I, established the English East India Company by royal charter. Both countries in the 17th century shared economical similarities, particularly their fondness of overseas trading. Developing a partnership in the field of trade and commerce, Bahrain instantly became an essential relation to the British Empire due to its geographical location. With the introduction of the Telegraph; the only form of longdistance communication during this era, the revolutionary transmission was a crucial foundation to closing the gap and building bridges between the West and Middle East, hence, the Telegraph played a crucial role in creating an evolving platform, linking the United Kingdom and the Kingdom of Bahrain.
Above: Manama Harbour approx 1870 Since the discovery of oil in Bahrain in 1932, the first Bahraini students were educated in the United Kingdom; they were also the pioneers who built the modern nation of the Kingdom of Bahrain. The British standard was and remains critical in achieving the highest standard possible. The exposure to the western culture through travel and education was a vital factor in this strong relation. Air transport evolved immensely after World War I and the arrival of long-distance flying in Britain began, Bahrain once again became an important link for Imperial airways (known as British Airways today). Below: Imperial AirwaysÂ’ Handley Page HP4
Prepared by Capt. Ameen Budagher (formerly Gulf Air)
It took two weeks and thirty-fives stops from Croydon, London to Bahrain, through to Singapore and onwards to Brisbane. As flights were flown only during the day as air navigation was unreliable and yet to be fully developed. And bridges continue to be built to this day. The Bahrain British Business Forum (BBBF) was founded in 1995, in which I am honoured to be the first Bahraini citizen from the sixteen founding members, to what is now a leading, successful and distinguished business forum in the Kingdom of Bahrain and the Gulf Cooperation Council. The BBBF continues to strive and promote the culture and social trade between the United Kingdom, the Kingdom of Bahrain and the GCC at large. As a Bahraini, and a member of the local community, we are delighted with the achievements of the business and social BBBF events and the achievements of the forum, which we trust will continue to exceed its aims and objectives for years to come. Over ten thousand British nationals reside in the Kingdom of Bahrain, where Britons have launched British/Bahraini institutions and communities throughout the island. To name only two; the British Club Bahrain founded in 1935 and St. ChristopherÂ’s School Bahrain founded in 1961 where I had the privilege to serve as a Board of Governor for seven consecutive years. Both have played their parts in strengthening and representing the Bahraini-British unified relationship. Congratulations to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the people of Bahrain and the United Kingdom on remaining strong allies, and keeping the commitment to remain unified with a longstanding friendship and relationship.

SIG - Update It s all change ahead for our special interest groups as we move into Autumn 2016. We say goodbye to Rick Hopper at Atkins, as he and his wife Heather (formerly of UKTI) make Paula Boast a move across to the Kingdom of Acting SIG Chair Saudi Arabia. We are incredibly grateful to Rick for all of his efforts these past 2 years. As a testament to how much work he has done we have some announcements to make and which clearly demonstrate that our Special Interest Groups remain fundamental to the operation and success of the BBBF. With that in mind and of course changing market conditions and business drivers we are adding to new SIGs to the mix for BBBF members, their guests and colleagues. Our new Hospitality SIG will be taken forward by Rodney Davies of Gulf Brands International. Rodney is tasked with harnessing the full scope of hotels, leisure and of course tourism to mirror Bahrain s drive forward on this front into 2017. We are looking to a launch event for this SIG in January 2017. We add to that the Women in Business SIG which will be spearheaded by Georgina Munnik of Charles Russell Speechlys and Emilia Mateva of UKTI. The launch event for this SIG will be on 29 November at the Capital Club.
SIG - Oil, Gas & Energy
Any members wishing to assist with these new SIGs or wishing to offer a platform of education, training, market information and developments generally should contact Rodney, Georgina and Emilia. We say goodbye and thank you to Nicole Phillips of Woodserv Energy in the Banking & Finance SIG. Jonathan Trafankowski of Muharraq STP continues to take this forward but if we have anyone else who would like to be involved then please do let Jonathan know. In the Security & IT SIG David Wales of Condor is now joined by Ravi Jayasundera of Sysprov Consulting. Jill Boggiss is joined by Mike Orlov of Stepping Stone Global for the Organisational Effectiveness SIG. We say goodbye and thank you to Tom Reynolds who has looked after our Young Professionals SIG. Ava Garbutt will continue at the helm assisted now by Michael Fodor of Trowers & Hamlins and Daniel Edwin of Oak Utilities. With our goodbye to Rick Hopper we also lose our head of the Construction & Projects SIG. I will oversee in the meantime but if anyone would like to volunteer for that one then they can contact me. We will shortly announce our new Head of Special Interest Groups to replace Rick and ready for a start in Q1 2017.

For those of you, who have been away for the summer, welcome back!! Over the next 6 weeks we will be preparing and planning for our 3rd SIG for Oil, Gas and Energy meeting on the subject of Pipeline Rehabilitation Technologies. Whether an industry practitioner or not, it may come as a surprise that 50% of the world s pipelines are over 50 years old with the majority operating in the Middle East. Such ageing is at a rate quicker than Industry Operators would care to admit putting critical infrastructure and sustained operations at risk. This ageing process, coupled with the prolonged contraction of the global oil price, increases the pressure on Operators within Industry. Organisations are therefore taking drastic measures, as capital budgets are either greatly reduced or being withdrawn completely. Strategies are now more focussed on capital savings with the adoption of new and cost effective solutions and it s clearly a time for solution providers to show value with greater innovation and creativity. OAK s focus will be to look at dynamic service and repair systems, discussing choices around selection and 12 Forum

Ravi s presentation was titled Addressing Cyber Security Challenges through IT Security Governance . He identified that having a suitable information security governance model in alignment with corporate and IT governance provides a powerful link between an organisation s governing body, executive management, and those responsible for information security. Implementing an effective information security governance model with the right leadership structure is not an easy task, but failing to do so could mean the difference between a contained crisis and a devastating catastrophe when things go wrong. The symposium was attended by over 250 business and IT industry professionals.

SIG Security Record temperatures have certainly left their mark this summer both around the world and at events such as the Olympics and Paralympics. I mention these two incredible events for their undoubted success and also the success of the huge security operation that swung into action ensuring a safe adventure for all those attending these two marvellous events. What a shame that that wonderful attribute of friendliness and compassion, which was very much on show at both the games, was not shared by all the warring factions around the world; that we read about every day. Calls for a Grand Strategy In Middle East, for example, does nothing to instil any confidence in enjoying peace in our time as one famous person once said; what would he be thinking now if he was still amongst us. So to this edition and what to look forward to: For those of you who may follow the BBBF daily postings on Facebook & LinkedIn will note that there is not a week that goes by that Cyber Security is not mentioned and this SIG contribution is no different. Question? Were you one of the many unfortunate Yahoo users who rushed on Friday 23rd September 2016 to close their accounts and to change their passwords due to experts warning that the fallout from one of the largest cyber breaches in history could spill beyond the internet company s services. Please see below a follow-up article on said subject. We will also be taking a look at our usual sourced articles on subjects such as Travel Security - FCO s warning on Passport theft, Card Fraud - Resulting in the loss of around £88.5m for UK cardholders. We are also featuring a new area of review and that is Healthcare Security A subject that is now very prevalent in the GCC due to the many healthcare facilities located within the Region, an interesting piece from our guest contributor with reference to Trends in Aviation Terrorism and finally our annual Christmas Message Revisited that is well worth a read.
experts warned the impact of the hack could reverberate throughout the internet. Several users said they were scrambling to change log-in information, not just Anthony Peter Palys MBE for Yahoo but for multiple internet accounts with the same passwords. Accounts at banks, retailers and elsewhere could be vulnerable. I suppose a hacker could make the connection between my Yahoo and Gmail, said Scott Braun, 47, who created a Yahoo email when he was setting up a shop on online retailer Etsy. They both use my first and last name. Not being a hacker, I don t know what their capabilities are. That concern was echoed in Washington. The seriousness of this breach at Yahoo is huge, Democratic Senator Mark Warner.

The company plans to brief Warner about the attack, his office said. Yahoo has said that it believes that the breach was perpetrated by a state-sponsored actor. SY Lee, a former Department of Homeland Security spokesman, said that would be of particular concern to the intelligence community, given the interest state-sponsored hackers have in compromising employees with security clearances.

British companies BT Group (BT.L) and Sky Plc (SKYB.L), which use Yahoo to host email for some of their broadband customers, said they were communicating with their users. Yahoo urged users to change their passwords and security questions, but some said it would be easier just to give up their accounts because they rarely use them. The company has been losing users, traffic and ad revenue in recent years and over the summer agreed to sell its core business for $4.8 billion to Verizon (VZ.N). Rachel, a 33-year-old from Newcastle, England, who asked Reuters not to use her last name, said she would be shutting down the Yahoo account she opened in 1999. Furious that the company had not protected its customers data better, she said she thought this could be yet another blow for the email service, which has been overtaken in popularity by Google s Gmail over the last decade.
Cyber Security: After Yahoo disclosed that hackers had stolen the encrypted passwords and personal details of more than 500 million accounts in 2014, thousands of users took to social media to express anger that it had taken the company two years to uncover the data breach. Several users said they were closing their accounts. We re probably just going to dump Yahoo altogether, said Rick Hollister, 56, who owns a private investigation firm in Tallahassee, Florida. They should have been more on top of this. Due to the scale of the Yahoo breach, and because users often recycle passwords and security answers across multiple services, cyber security
What do you do now... if you have an account? Yahoo is advising account holders to change their passwords, not only on their Yahoo accounts, but on all linked accounts or those which have the same or similar passwords. It says this is particularly important if you haven t changed your Yahoo password since 2014. Yahoo says it is notifying potentially affected users of the attack by email.

Travel Security: Hustlers steal passports from British tourists abroad:
The Foreign Office has warned holidaymakers about the techniques used by hustlers to steal passports after more than 21,000 British tourists lost or had theirs stolen abroad last year. Consulates around the world had to issue more than 30,000 emergency travel documents to globe-trotting Britons stuck overseas. A new passport costs £72.50, while an emergency document is £100. That means Brits spent around £4.5m on replacing their vital travel documents in order to get home. James Freedman, a fraud and crime expert, has joined forces with the FCO which has launched an online campaign called #PassportAware to advise Brits on how to avoid being targeted by thieves. The four most common scams include someone posing as an official or police officer and asking to look at your passport before walking off with it, as well as pickpocketing by distraction. Thieves will also target hotel front desks while holidaymakers are busy checking-in, filling out forms or paying their bills. Tourists are also advised to be on their guard while relaxing and to not tempt thieves by leaving bags out of sight and draping coats over the back of seats, making it easy for criminals to reach into pockets. Mr Freedman said criminals and conmen are always evolving their tricks , but a few simple precautions can help people stay safe. Only carry what you really need and keep cash and other valuables in a secure pocket or bag, he said. Above all, trust your instincts and be aware of anyone invading your personal space. The FCO advise making photocopies of passports for identification, locking documents in a hotel safe and ensuring they are not visible when carrying them. Card Fraud: UK card fraud rose 18% in 2015, marking the sharpest increase across Europe in 2015, resulting in the loss of around £88.5m for UK cardholders. Analysts from analytic software company FICO say the rise in card fraud across the UK has been fuelled by a rise in online shopping as well as personal data being stolen through cybercrime. E-commerce spending in the UK has nearly quadrupled since 2007, so you see why this is such a target for criminals, said FICO s fraud consultant, Martin Warwick. When executive dashboards in either retailers or
card issuers start flashing red in terms of unacceptable fraud losses, change will have to take place , Mr Warwick added. The data from Euromonitor International shows that card fraud rose in 10 of the 19 countries studied, with Greece, Denmark, France and Russia posting the highest increases after the UK. Card fraud increased by 10% compared to figures for 2014, in part due to the successful rollout of chip and PIN payment, and the digital revolution. Kendrick Sands, senior analyst at Euromonitor said the projected increase in online payments suggests additional security measures will be required throughout Europe . If greater security measures are not adopted to combat card not present fraud, the broader advance of card payments over paper alternatives could be negatively impacted, Mr Sands added. For a market that has made the transition of consumer payments from paper to card and electronic alternatives a priority in recent years, increasing the security of transactions must remain a priority to increase consumer confidence in payments. FICO is recommending that the financial services industry will either have to find a way to make data useless to criminals or make more use of fraud detection analysis. Healthcare Security: An insight & a warning! Healthcare organisations are facing a new and unique set of challenges. Their recently-digitized healthcare records have turned out to be extremely valuable to criminals while hospitals, clinics, and other organisations are still learning how to protect them. Plus, healthcare organisations have additional challenges to face on top of that. Patient safety is top priority for hospitals, assisted living centres and nursing homes, but these facilities are under constant pressure to also balance patient safety with managing costs and constant visitor traffic, open access in multiple buildings, hectic emergency departments, confidentiality requirements, governmental standards and patient satisfaction surveys. For example doctors offices, insurance companies, and other related organisations, a large number of people need access to patient records to do their jobs. Some of these employees are temporary, or visiting from partner organisations, or have recently changed roles so access control needs to be maintained to maintain proper security. Mobile device issues - Healthcare organizations have sensitive data spread across a number of devices, not just servers and desktops but also laptops, mobile devices, and specialized devices for inputting medical record data. All devices with sensitive data should be able to be encrypted at all times and have the ability to remotely wipe devices when lost. According to the most recent Healthcare Breach Report from Bitglass, 68% of all healthcare data breaches since 2010 were due to device theft or loss. The inability to successfully handle these responsibilities can earn a healthcare facility an unsafe reputation. To help manage all that goes into running a safe healthcare organization, you need a security services provider who is responsive and has expertise in the unique security challenges of the healthcare environment. themselves. The recruitment of these employees is mostly done via social networks, especially Facebook, which can provide an almost unlimited supply of potential recruits. It should be noted that the recruitment can also be carried out in traditional ways, via other circles of acquaintances such as worshippers in mosques, family, friends and more.
The paper discusses a wide range of trends, ranging from airline attacks to the potential deployment of UAVs around airports for terrorist purposes. The potential of the latter was shown earlier this year when Dubai International Airport was forced to close down due to an UAV (human error and not a terrorist motive were identified as the cause of the incident). However, one of the most interesting points relates to security screenings, an issue that goes beyond the aviation industry. The ICT report raises the following concerns: One of the main trends emerging from recent terror attacks is the attempt to make use of personnel employed by the aviation industry to aid or execute an attack. In many cases, terrorist organisations choose to recruit airport employees in order to transfer weapons to secure areas by bypassing security measures or to carry out the attack 18 Forum

than ever to bolster their anti-bribery regimes, many still lack the tools and early warning systems that could help flag these risks in advance.
The Christmas Message – Revisited In a study carried out by the International Institute for Counter-Terrorism (ICT) in 2015, Facebook profiles were discovered that belonged to employees of airports throughout Europe who had access to secure areas of commercial and cargo flights and who had posted Islamic-jihadist content . It is hard to believe that the aviation industry (with its strong security and business continuity guidelines) is alone in facing these issues. This ICT message is therefore also a wake-up call for other businesses with a presence in strategically important areas (infrastructure, O&G, transport, finance and public affairs) that screening of social media and other sources matters for screening purposes. Food For Thought: Company’s Compliance Programme A Legal Week Intelligence and Kroll survey of in-house lawyers, partners and senior executives has found that while almost 90% of respondents said their company s compliance programme specifically addresses bribery and corruption, the extent to which safeguards are put in place to detect and prevent those risks varied greatly. Falling foul of bribery and corruption charges can be disastrous for any business. Indeed, for some it can taint their entire industry. Legal and compliance teams face constant pressures to stay one step ahead of the game and snuff out any misconduct before it takes place. But while companies are doing more

Humans - The weakest link in the cyber security chain
Every year companies spend millions on cyber security ensuring their important data is well protected from prying eyes. With an ever growing and evolving cyber threat, organisations must constantly ensure they are up to date with the latest malware and virus protection or have downloaded the latest firmware upgrade to ensure they will not be hit by the latest trending attacks.
One of the key findings highlighted in the IBM Cost of Data Breach Study was that Improvements in data governance initiatives will reduce the cost of data breach. Incident response plans, the appointment of a CISO (Chief Information Security Officer), employee training and awareness programs and a business continuity management strategy result in cost savings .
According to the study by IBM/Ponemon Cost of Data Breach Study: Global Analysis - The average cost paid for each lost or stolen record containing sensitive and confidential information increased 6%, jumping from $145 in 2014 to $154 in 2015. These costs are linked to increased costs in items such as loss of customer confidence, company downtime as well as an increase in costs of recovery. Combine these findings with the Breach Level Index (BLI) statistics that 22 records were compromised every second (1.9 million every day) in 2015 and it shows Cyber-crime has now become a very profitable and attractive profession. Nobody needs to rob a bank with a gun anymore, not when they can do it with a computer from the safety and comfort of their own home!
As the front line operative on your computer, you are the first line of defence. In the current Cyber-crime era it is now yours and your colleagues job to protect your organisational data and information, not just the IT departments. If you feel underprepared for this task then perhaps you should ask your company security or IT department for a briefing on potential threats and weaknesses within your company IT infrastructure, or look online as there is now a huge amount of up to date research available which can get you quickly up to speed o n c u r re n t C y b e r- c r i m e threats and trends.
Huge budgets and resources are often plunged into online data protection and other expensive technical tools to help safeguard company s data, but when was the last time your company spent the appropriate time or money arming you? Have you ever been trained to spot a cyber attack? Or block a spammer? Do you know the difference between a phishing attack and a Trojan horse?! IBM s 2014 Cyber Security Index tells us that 95% of all security incidents involve human error. So it is actually you and I, the trusted employee , that is more often than not the cause of any major data breach, whether we know about it or not! As with most criminal activities a hacker will always aim for the softest target, the lowest hanging fruit and unfortunately, when it comes to cyber security, that usually means us, the user . At this point a few thoughts may cross your mind, this doesn t apply to my company , our critical information is not important to anyone else . Unfortunately though, your critical data is always important to someone. The FBI estimate that cyber criminals collected $209 million in the first three months of 2016 by extorting businesses and institutions to unlock computer services. Ransomware, as this type of Cyber threat is commonly known, does not have to break into your data vault to steal your information, it just has to find a way to put a second lock on it so you can t access it either. Once it has locked it up, you either pay for it to be unlocked, or you lose it. 22 Forum

If you receive emails from unknown sources then do not open them, especially if they have attachments Encrypt your confidential data Take regular backups of your data on an external hard disk/drive and keep these backups unconnected to your system Report suspicious activity to your local administrator or CISO Cyber-crime is now everywhere, it is not a case of if you or your company will get hit any more, it is now a case of when. Edward Rose Chairman, BBA(EP) Since the publication of Saudi Arabia s Vision 2030 in April 2016 and the National Transformation Program 2020 ("NTP") in June (see http://vision2030.gov.sa/en), the business community has been waiting for signs from the Government about when, and in which sectors, the first wave of new projects will commence. The Deputy Crown Prince has been busy over the summer publicising the opportunities afforded by Saudi s economic and social reform plans to many of the Kingdom s key international partners. He visited the United States and France in June, and then China, Japan and South Korea during the time of the G20 meetings which were hosted by China in September. It is expected that trips to the UK, Germany
Saudi Snippets Nuclear Energy
The Cabinet, in its weekly meeting in October, reiterated Saudi Arabia s belief in the legitimate right of Middle Eastern countries to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, under supervision of and according to the International Agency for Atomic Energy standards. 30 Forum
Domestically, the NTP indicates that priority sectors for expenditure will be those overseen by the Ministries of Housing, Health and Education. Significant funding also appears available to support a further range of projects for the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu to implement. Few schemes have however yet been explicitly launched under the NTP, although several announcements about new projects have emanated from the utilities sector (electricity, water and solar developments), the real estate / housing sector, and the airports sector. Certain of these schemes may be procured on a public-private partnership or build-operatetransfer basis. The twin impacts on the country of an oil price which is still sitting below US$50 per barrel and the cost of a war which is still underway in Yemen are most likely causing certain of the NTP s spending plans to be reassessed. Saudi has been drawing down further against its foreign reserves this year, while also launching various offerings of sovereign bonds, so the overall economic picture remains complex. The The Kingdom gave voice to this belief just before the 71st UN General Assembly meeting discussing the importance of implementing the Agreement on Barring the Use of Chemical Weapons in Syria. The Cabinet also reviewed the outcome of the Arab League s extraordinary meeting, to discuss the serious situation in the Syrian city of Aleppo.

Government seems intent on identifying additional sources of savings and income if recent publicity about cuts to public sector pay and a substantial increase in visa fees are reliable indications of the authorities current fiscal thinking. There is talk of a tax on the remittances of expatriate workers being applied in 2017, while the introduction of VAT at a rate of 5% is on the cards for 2018. In short, while the prospect of significant new project work means that Saudi Arabia can no doubt be seen as an investment destination which is full of potential, it would appear that the net cost of conducting business in the Kingdom may soon increase. This was certainly one of the themes which emerged from the very-well organised Opportunity Arabia XIII conference, held by the Middle East Association on 20 September 2016 in London, at which I and Jeff Stewart (General Secretary of the BBA(EP)) were both asked to speak. There was a keen level of discussion

Its fortunes will remain critical to Bahrain and the wider GCC as well. Investors, contractors and consultants will all need to remain flexible. The BBA(EP), for its part, will endeavour to remain a source of information, guidance and perspective during an era when the Kingdom may well experience an unprecedented level of reform. The BBA(EP) has been active with social and business functions over the summer and autumn months, and we look forward to cohosting the Poppy Ball on 18 November. Please contact us with any questions you may have about establishing and maintaining commercial links with the Eastern Province. As many as 221 women will be hired only in one division (kitchen) in Jeddah. Saudia Catering, a subsidiary of Saudi Arabian Airlines, has already 120 women employed in the fields of retail and logistics.

The greater the number of people who know CPR, the better someone s chances of surviving. CPR is the act of pushing hard and fast on the chest and giving breaths. It is given to someone whose heart has stopped pumping blood.
To give CPR: follow these steps: 1. Make sure the person is lying on his back, on a firm, flat surface. 2. Move clothes out of the way. 3. Put the heel of one hand on the lower half of the breastbone. Put the heel of your other hand on top of the first hand. 4. East Innovations wins 2016 WMA WebAward 30C. Wind South Southeast 9 10 knots. Scattered Cloud. for Best Leisure Website It s warm on course today, cool off with our famous on-course cold towels! Visit the site when it s raining, snowing, windy, clear, hot, or cold. Whatever the weather is, a corresponding and personalised message is displayed to the user. Three. The site was designed and project managed in Bahrain, it was developed in the Ukraine and launched for our client in Azerbaijan. It was completed on time and on budget. All of which is testament to the fact that a distributed team can provide access to some of the very best talent by removing the limitations of geographic borders. Four. We ve just won the 2016 Web Marketing Association WebAward, Best Leisure Website for our work. Scoring 63.5 out of a potential 70 points, the Dreamland site came in at 7.5 points higher than the average for the industry and 8.2 points higher than the WebAwards average for 2016. We knew this project was going to be special from the beginning. Early last year, we got a call from Phil Jones. Phil is the General Manager of a brand new, IMG managed, DYE Design 18 hole championship golf course in Azerbaijan Dreamland Golf Club. We d worked with Phil previously when he was the Director of Golf at the Royal Golf Club in Bahrain. During the course of our 4 year partnership, we designed and developed 3 websites for the club and successfully transitioned the majority of their marketing from a traditional brochures and billboards approach to being digital first leveraging social and email marketing, online advertising and analytics. When Phil called us, the club house was still under construction. Only 9 of the final 18 holes had been completed but based on the results we d achieved at the Royal Golf Club, he knew that digital presented the best solution to reach the right people and to raise awareness of the facility as quickly and effectively as possible. We designed, developed and rolled out a number of email marketing campaigns but started with the website. We wanted to create an anchor to support all other marketing and there are four stand out features that we re really proud of. One. The main hero image on the homepage changes depending on when you visit. Navigate to the site during the day and you ll get one of three different shots of the course, showing the lush green grass under a bright blue sky. Visit over night and you ll see one of a selection of evening shots, showing the course or club house lit up beautifully under the stars. Two. Also on the homepage, we developed a module that combines marketing messages with a live weather report. For example, visit the site on a hot day and it may show the following message:
Creating Dreamland Golf Club has been an immensely rewarding project for our team here in Baku, working with East Innovations gave us the opportunity to use their extensive knowledge and support to create a very special website. The site is featured in Azerbaijani, Russian and English languages, which was a substantial task for our team in creating accurate content as some of the golf terminology is not easily translated. I am delighted to see the efforts of all have been recognised with this award. Phil Jones, General Manager Dreamland Golf Club The WebAward program is the longest running annual website award competition dedicated to naming the best web sites in 96 industries while setting the standard of excellence for all website development. Run by the Web Marketing Association, it was founded in 1997 to help set a high standard for Internet marketing and development of the best websites on the World Wide Web. Staffed by volunteers, the organisation is made up of Internet marketing, online advertising, PR, and top web site design professionals who share an interest in improving the quality of online advertising, internet marketing, and website promotion. We re delighted to have won a WebAward. Our priority is to deliver for our clients and their communities first but to be recognised by an international body like the WMA is fantastic. It s always been an aim of mine that East should support our clients to stand shoulder to shoulder with their peers and international competitors. It s an incredible boost to receive the WebAward for Best Leisure Website and I ve already cleared a space at the studio for the trophy. - Mark Warman, Managing Director of East Innovations Forum 41

o as the summer heat starts to dissipate all thoughts naturally begin to drift towards how best your company can prepare for the Bahrain Triathlon on 10th December 2016. The Bahrain Ironman is in its 3rd year and, despite last years ill found choice of location and inability to conduct a swim, this year the race is moving back to the Financial Harbour and will start at the Four Seasons Hotel and finish at the F1 track. For those not familiar with the sport it consists of a 1.9KM open water swim, 90KM bike and a 21 KM run. The good news is that it can be completed as a relay with teams of up to 3 and there are male, female and mixed categories. Full details can be found via Google or at Ironman Bahrain Training for the event is vital. Surprisingly swimming facilities are hard to find on the Island with probably the best being the Shk Khalifa Sports City 50M pool or the Rugby Club, although the Chillier is under repair. Cycling benefits from the new 10KM cycle track near Zallaq Beach, and it s now floodlit, while running can be done with the Bahrain Road Runners on a Monday and Wednesday evening or early Friday morning. Training plans are available each week through a Bahrain Triathlon Club weekly column in the GDN but if you want the full plan you will have to join the club, currently membership is 20BD and the discount you get for the Bahrain Ironman covers this charge. Training for Triathlon is all about balancing your available training time and requirements for the sport. Too many think they have to train for 3 separate events rather than one Swim, Bike and Run. Most of your training will be complementary and improve your overall fitness. At this early stage in your training cycle donÂ’t over train and take into account the heat and humidity. My supporters and I donate to: http://operationchildlife.com/ The doctors from RCSI travelling to underdeveloped countries are my good friends. Countries like Tanzania, Vietnam and the likes don t have developed healthcare and the mission of Operation Childlife is to deliver professional healthcare available in European countries like Ireland free of charge and to operate on children who need help. They don t get paid for doing this, in fact they pay for their own travel to save lives. So I am helping with donations which buy them a ticket to travel and save a child s life. BREXIT (again) So the vote has been cast and the turmoil in the UK has settled down. (a bit) So what will it mean for the people of the UK and the relationships with other countries all over the world... The truth is NOBOBY KNOWS! Although about 17.5 million voted to leave, this represented only 37.5% of those entitled to vote indicating that about 62.5% did not vote for this course to be taken.
Speaking on a French radio station early in September, former Prime Minister Tony Blair said “We have done something rather bizarre with Brexit...It’s like moving house without having seen the new house. We have made an agreement to exchange, but we don’t yet know the terms of Brexit, we don’t know the costs or the consequences.” The vote to leave, Mr Blair said, had been a reaction against austerity, globalisation and immigration.
.
Asked whether it was possible the decision could be reversed with the UK staying in the EU, Mr Blair said at the moment, this was unlikely “But the debate continues, and I think it is possible, yes.” 52 Forum
that future Labour governments will match EU structural funding currently worth 10.8 billion euros (£9.3 billion) from 2014 to 2020. Two months after the vote A leading national newspaper suggested that Nicola Sturgeon should press for all EU powers that relate to devolved policy areas to be “automatically” transferred to Edinburgh, including controls over farming, fishing, employment law, consumer protection, social policy and the environment.
Former SNP Minister, Alex Neil urged Ms Sturgeon to seize the “golden opportunity” to act in a way that could pave the way for full Scottish independence “by 2020”. In Wales, Plaid Cymru has accused rival parties of “deluded arrogance”, claiming they want the UK to leave the European single market after Brexit.
Meanwhile speaking at the Labour Party conference, Shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry, guaranteed
Wales would be likely to benefit from the scheme. Currently it is allocated 2.4 billion euros (£2.1bn) under the current sevenyear programme. In Northern Ireland where 56% of voters wanted to remain the debate continues.
The shadow Northern Ireland secretary Dave Anderson has said the vote to leave the European Union has put the border at risk, severely damaged the economy and gives sustenance to those who want to break up the UK.
Also in Northern Ireland, Attorney General John Larkin QC will be involved in landmark legal bids to stop the UK’s planned departure from the European Union after a preliminary hearing at the High Court in Belfast. Different Legal challenges are already underway including claims that leaving the EU would inflict damage on the peace process as
And Finally well as that invoking Article 50 without first securing Parlimentary authorisation would be unlawful. Elsewhere, an article in The Guardian says “ When the wound-licking is done, the more important matter will be what kind of relationship Britain should have with the EU after the divorce.
Wolfgang Schäuble, Germany’s powerful but testy finance minister, has just got shirty with the foreign secretary’s blithe suggestion that there was not necessarily a trade off between the single market and freedom of movement inside the EU. That will not necessarily please Angela Merkel, who has phrased her response to Brexit with deliberate calm. “She knows punishment beatings won’t help get this sorted,” a confidant in the Kanzleramt says
As we go to press the latest statement from No. 10 is that Theresa May alone will decide the terms of Britains departure.
