ABOUT THE DESIGNER MORGAN STATE UNIVERSITY, MD BSAED 2016

HABARI I am in love with the design process and the exploration of new ideas. I am proud and happy to call myself a designer and spend my days crafting and drawing as a design impetus. It is my intention to join a school with a progressive culture that encourages, and facilitates free thought, conceptualization, and iterative experimentation. This is a collection of my works over 3.5 years in Architecture School.

ruid hill Park is a newly activated multi-use recreational park north of Baltimore city. As recent developmnet in the area draws people to the vicinity, the park is seeing an increase in attendance. With ample playgrounds, the Maryland zoo, a rich variance of trees and greenery, along with a running track around the Druid Hill Reservoir, it allows for a whole host of activities. This influx of people and renewed attention to the park, created the opportunity for a Pavilion born out of abstracting the sights and sounds within the park.

BRINGING LIFE TO TIVOLY AVE

8

Tivoly avenue | Baltimore, MD Project site.

T

he revival experiments by introducing novel form to the streetscape and increasing diversity of residential building types. The tapered walls take away the need for a party-wall and introduces 2 new facades for fenestration to further illuminate the interior. The apartments to the rear of the lot are reclaimed shipping containers re-purposed, retrofitted and stacked to function as structure for the apartments. This cost and time effective construction has the potential to be a trend-setter in providing low-cost durable living solutions for underserved communities without compromising the quality of the living environment. The revival challenges compromised open/ communal space of the rowhouse and apartment housing types by studying density and diversity of housing through formal spatial transformations.

New view from Tivoly ave. The rising forms give the street a defining character. Sightlines into the rear yard are established.

The rear yard provides a safe, and ‘personal’ space for the residents. There is plenty of opportunity for interaction between people on their decks and people within the space. This closeness aims to promote Social Capital.

Park Heights | Baltimore, MD Project site.

I

n our redevelopment plan for Park Heights, we focused on creating unity and cohesion as well as improving the quality of life in Park Heights. We achieved this by making three moves: lessening the impact of Park Heights ave as a divider on the site, creating a more harmonious relationship with the context, and improving community health by introducing urban farming and trade.

Transportation Main transit through Park heights. Park heights Ave is 6 lane road catering multiple forms of transit.

Intersections Intersections are concentration nodes that connect the neighborhood to the Park heights Ave. They are meeting points and carry potential to unite the two sides of the neighborhood.

RFQ

Area undergoing significant transformation via the acquisition and demolition of a 62-acre area centered on Park Heights and Woodland Avenues. Baltimore City is pursuing redevelopment of the area by replacing blighted blocks with economically viable development.

Density The area as a whole is predominantly residential with different levels of occupation. High density neighborhoods tend to be more stable while the lower desnse areas struggle with vacant units.

PROCESS | DESIGN

Raised health walk idea In an effort to boost community health and create a sense of entry into the neighborhood, a raised green path corssing Park Heights Ave was conceptualized. It did not make the final design.

Preliminary conceptualization of a green path A green path is suggested to connect the two community green spaces of opposite side of Park Heights Ave. Potentially, it would also link to the proposed urban farm.

RFQ Redesign diagram The new Park Heights is more connected to its context with a more fluent urban fabric. Park heights Ave is is split into two, lessening it’s impact on the neighborhood and creating the opportunity to integrate storm water management in-between the transit ways.

German Park | Reservoir Hill, Baltimore, MD Project site.

a Community Core seeks to revitalize Afieldctivating German Park by introducing a multi-functional house as well as a new program to diversify

the park’s use, promote civic engagement, and activate it as a community core. The re-design also introduces new interactive activities such as chess, exercise machines, and grilling stations ideally used by more than one person at a time. The quaint Field House contains a library and clear views onto Whitelock street. This community based approach seeks to foster community cohesion and hopefully begin to unite the divided neighborhood.
