FORE WORD According to the Worldometers website there is almost 7.5 Billion people on the planet today! Where are all of these people going to live? Space is at a premium in the cities and more and more people are looking for some place to live near to where they work. Resources are tight and local governments are at a loss as to what to do, so what is the answer? We could go subterranean and utilise the numerous caves, mines and tunnels that are currently not being used any more but that could only go so far as some have poisonous atmospheres. We could build up on top of existing structures but that is limited by the structural integrity of the building foundations and can only go so far before major underpinning is required. We could go subaquatic and build colonies on the sea bed but this too is limited by the enormous pressures created at depth. We could build on the moon but the atmosphere or lack of would be a factor. All of these problems and possibilities will need to at some point in the future be looked into further as the population grows and the planets resources are stretched to breaking point. We as a species need to seriously think about where we are today and where we will be in say 100 years when the population could exceed 15 Billion. There is too much emphasis on ME, ME, ME and how much have you got compared to me? We need to change to US, US, US soon or there will be no more Me!

THE BRIEF As a part of the design team tasked by your entrepreneurial client you will be required to develop and design a flexible system that could be used to construct Live/Work units within the city and or surrounding areas (for example, flat roofs of buildings) that can also be used on such places as caravan sites, camp grounds and even back gardens and university grounds. So what is the solution? LIVING PODS Living pods can be fashioned out of almost any material and object that is large enough to accommodate a person or persons. When thought about carefully, these pods need to be all inclusive. They must be internally no bigger than 3m x 3m x 2.5m (22.5 cubic metres) and can be any shape externally. Things like Shipping containers, Sheds, Disused canal boats, Tree houses, Old bus, Campervan, Caravan, Old trailers from articulated lorries, The list can be endless as to what can be made into a living pod and the materials used. For this occasion, we will be looking at self-build from scratch, something that requires only the most basic of skills to assemble, going down the prefabricated route is an option but only if there is a high enough demand for this product, but first things first let’s look further into the list above.

CASE STUDY There are many different styles of living pod available on the market today but they all have one thing in common, they are all bigger than the size constraints issued for this project. So to get an idea of what some of the other products look like let’s get started with a shipping container.
CONTAINER POD These come in a large variety of sizes from the cute little 2740mm x 1955mm x 1727mm to the huge 13716mm x 2438mm x 2438mm. The main disadvantage of a shipping container is its sheer weight, at .49tonne for the smallest to a staggering 4.74tonne for the biggest. Containers are made of metal which is also cold, so there would need to be a lot of insulation for sound and heat but as you can see in the picture below looks are everything and with several different variations available too.
http://humble-homes.com/mobile-homes-a-transforming-shipping-container-house/
The idea is simple and effective, take an old container, cut the front side out and put in French doors, a bit furniture and bobs your uncle a metal pod, providing of course you can weld, grind, lay concrete, etc. etc. Prices can be anywhere from ÂŁ20k to convert a single container. Skill-set: - HIGH

SHED POD Shed living pods are a bit more user friendly, they are not as heavy as containers and can come in a wider variety of shapes and sizes too. From pent roof to flat roof to apex roof, they can even have curved roofs and nearly all come flat packed. They can be erected in a couple of days or can be delivered fully assembled. These start at £10k and are more budget friendly and can easily be moved if on wheels like the one pictured, but that’s more like a mobile home than a pod but each to his own. Skill-set: - MEDIUM/HIGH http://www.tinyhouseuk.co.uk/
Again, this is a simple idea, buy a shed and fit it out, not much imagination required and not an ideal solution.

BOAT POD What do you get if you take a big old boat, turn it upside down, cut the front and back of and replace them with windows and a door? A Boat Pod? It’s not a thing of beauty and prices start at £10k for the basic shell. http://www.hectorandcedric.com/projects/camping-chalet/
OK, I know it’s not a boat but if you use your imagination it could be an upside down boat, just bring out your inner child.

MY THINKING I no sooner read the brief and I knew what I wanted and how it would look. I didn’t have to go through several sketches and design tests to get where I am today. I read it, I saw it, and I built it. Wherever the Pod will be sited it needs to blend in, it needs to look like it’s always been there so colour and texture of the exterior needs to be taken into consideration so altering the colour is an easy fix dependent on location, if the pod were to be mounted on a flat roof that is predominantly grey in colour then the pod could be painted grey to match and so on. So for this pod, my pod, I have decided to place it on the edge of the forest with a south and west orientation on the local camp ground so it could easily be connected to the services. My pod will be painted a black matt colour which will help it to blend into the area plus it will also help with keeping the pod warm on the inside as black will absorb the sun’s rays and thermally heat the pod. Site access and getting materials to site would not be a problem as all of the parts are easy to handle and carry. I want something that will be easy to build by even a novice, there is no better feeling than to sit back after a project is completed and say ‘I did that’ even for a student. In The United States of America they have something called Habitat for Humanity, a charity that builds houses for the people that cannot afford to for themselves and gets them to help build it as a part of that contract (sweat equity) so why can the same thing not be done in this instance?

PARTS The way I have designed this pod is simple in the fact that all parts used are virtually off the shelf. If you lose something or just simply need to replace something, then you can simply go to your nearest DIY supply store and pick it up without any special ordering or waiting for delivery unless option variations have been taken. There is very little skill required to build this pod. If you can read assembly instructions and use a hammer and a screw-driver, then you can build this pod. The only professional help that is required is that of a certified Electrician to certify the electrics in the pod once complete. There is currently no legislation to allow for self-certification of this type as yet (2017)
SHAPE & FUNCTION I have decided that my pod will be square as there is no need for odd shapes and this will be more than adequate to meet the demands of the brief. Anything other than a square shape would require a higher skill set from the person building the pod and that would defeat the object of providing something that everyone can build and it would also increase the cost to manufacture and the cost to replace/repair if needed in the future. The pod will have relaxing space, working space, sleeping space, storage space, eating space, washing/shower space, electricity and water supply, it will be very easy to build by either one or two or three people with very little skill required. It will have a sloped roof to aid in rain dispersal. The only thing that will be needed a professional to connect & test is the electrics, everything else is simply plug n play.
PRICING At the back of this document I have provided a full breakdown of the prices of individual parts used in this project so that budgeting can be made easier. For each individual customer I will be offering variations on the basic model (customisations) what they want they can have at a price, for my pod I have a two-person sunken spa bath for me and my wife, under floor heating, and a pull down projection screen for the TV with the projector hidden in the overhead wardrobes. I have also added a pull down double bed and smart glass. All of these things cost money and all are optional. The budget model will not have the bath or underfloor heating or smart glass but will have curtains fitted as standard.

THE BASE SUPPORT The base of my pod will be that of brick pillars set onto concrete foundation pads. Each foundation pad will be approximately 762mm x 762mm x 457mm which works out at 3 cubic meters of concrete (ready mixed). In the middle of the pad will be steel reinforcement bars. The pads will also be set 75mm below any surface topping to allow for the cover over of the concrete. Next will come the brick pillars, each pillar will be 482mm x 482mm x 300mm each pillar will consist of 4 course of bricks per pillar with a 10mm joint line and have a total of 40 bricks in total. (sizes are +/- 20mm dependant on what size bricks (optional) are requested over standard engineering bricks used) The cement can either be bought ready mixed in big tubs that have additives that will make it workable for a week or so or it can be mixed by hand on site as needed. The next page shows a layout of the pads and pillars for the pod. Starting at the bottom left and following the coloured lines with the centre distance chart below it for exact placement of the pillars. Differences in land levels can be compensated for by building bigger columns, there would however be no change required in the foundation pads but there would be an obvious price increase in doing so. At this time, any service pipes or cables can be run in the ground to ease access before the pod is built.

THE BASE The base of my pod will be made from either used or new Oak Sleepers dependent on availability. There are 6 sleepers measuring 300mm x 254mm x 3157mm which will need to be cut on site. These will simply be placed on top of the brick pillars with no fixings required due to their size and weight. But dependent on authority requirements threaded bar can be drilled down through the sleepers into the columns and epoxied into place as an anchor. Another option for the base is to use Steel girders, again these can be bought new or recycled from existing projects. Sleeper base
A variation of the pillars is to have the whole pod stand on adjustable galvanised steel feet these are 25mm thick steel with an adjustable neck to enable level adjustments up to 50mm. These in turn will have to stand on either a hard standing of some sort or individual paving slabs.

THE WALLS The walls are next to be built, these consist of 75mm x 50mm pressure treated timbers. Each wall can be built in turn making sure that each vertical upright is spaced at 400mm centres, where the ends of the walls meet each wall upright must be tripled and doubled in order to allow for fixing of interior and exterior boards. Note how one wall has three uprights fixed together and the other has 2 uprights. This would be mirrored on all four walls. Corner wall setup.
Where there are two walls to be joined together they are to be bolted together using 10mm threaded bar or bolt cut to length as required with washers and nylok lock nuts fitted to each end and countersunk on the outside so as not to impede installation of the cladding.

15 joint fixing and layout
Here we see the suggested joint fixing layout for the walls.
Once all of the walls are assembled and the floor joists are fixed it is time to wrap the whole thing in a breathable membrane or breathable roofing felt fixing it with staples. This allows the building structure to breath which will in turn help stop damp. Breathable membrane wrap

STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY With The pod floor area being 3m x 3m providing a fully open internal environment. There are no concerns with roof sag. The timbers for the ceiling are screwed to the main roof bearers which in turn have plaster board to the underside and marine ply to the outer skin which will be glued and screwed.
CLADDING Next it is all externally clad using pressure treated 100mm x 22mm rough sawn timber cladding with a 17mm overlap to the next board working up using 65mm galvanised nails or 65mm coated screws. The overlap is sufficient to cast off any rain water that may fall upon it. This is to be carried out to all four walls all the way around. Below is a picture of how the cladding should look after installation. Cladding overlap view

ROOF & CEILING The main structure of the roof is supplied by the 9, 4.9-meter-long joists that are 300mm x 75mm. These are spaced at 355mm centres along the top of the walls and screw down through the sides into the walls. Making sure that each joist overhangs the rear wall by 330mm to allow for water runoff and 1630mm to the front for canopy. A cross brace joist can then be fitted front and back to help keep spacing and prevent lateral movement. Once this is complete then internal noggins can be placed in between as well as front and back before the Marine Ply wood roof is fitted and fixed every 300mm with galvanised screws. Two rolls of black roofing felt are to be used and secured using brush on adhesive making sure all joints and seems are painted over with the adhesive. Inside the ceiling can be fitted which consists of 15mm square edge plasterboards fixed at 100mm intervals with all screw holes filled and sanded when dry before painting. Below is the finished roof.

SUB FLOOR Sub Floor
The next part to add is the sub flooring which is to be screwed down at 150mm intervals so that it reduces movement, squeaking and shrinkage and as a requirement if fitting underfloor heating and or ceramic tiles. Each crossed line indicates the exact screw placement that must be used in order to prevent squeaking and warping. Again the use of 75mm galvanised chipboard screws and an appropriate builder’s adhesive, would be advised.

DOORS & INTERNAL WALLS Now that the floor, cladding and roof are all fitted it is now time to make my pod secure by fitting the sliding doors. Again I have opted for two doors but one would suffice. Each door is made of aluminium and is double glazed argon gas filled and has a 5 point locking system. Each door from Duration can also be fully slid back on its own independent track to allow for maximum space. There is also a door stop in each track at the top and bottom. The glass units are also fitted with SMART glass technology, a small voltage is applied to the glass to make it go clear and when the voltage is removed the glass goes opaque. This removes the need for window dressings such as curtains or blinds but again this is optional. Sliding glass doors.
INSULATION Now that all of the walls are clad and the doors are on it is time to insulate and board the internal walls. Using Knauf 100mm Loft Roll Insulation from Wickes, 4 rolls will suffice. This should be fitted between all of the uprights before boarding with 12 x square edge 2400mm x 1200mm x 12.5mm plasterboards which are to be butt joined and screwed at 300mm intervals. Once complete any type of wall finish can be added from wallpaper to tile to painted finish. The choice is down to the owner. Andrew J Tilly 07024074

HEATING My pod heating will be supplemented by the addition of an electric underfloor heating system for the winter months by fitting a heating mat system under the finished floor treatment. It consists of an electrical mat that heats up a specific floor area giving an ambient temperature to any room its fitted in. A thermostat on the wall ensures a nice even temperature but it has to be laid in a specific fashion as shown below following the manufacturers exact instructions. underfloor heating layout
Thermostats come in all shapes and sizes as shown below from the basic switch style with rotary temperature selector to the super modern touch screen type. All do the same job and all vary in price.

DECKING My pod shall have decking covering two sides so that in the summer months on a sunny evening I/we can sit out enjoying a nice glass of sweet cider. The decking shall consist of the following. 12 x 1800mm x 100mm x 100mm posts 27.5m x 100mm x 50mm handrail 2 x stringers 16 x 4.2m x 25mm x 100mm decking boards 13 x 3.1m x 25mm x 100mm decking boards 55m x 125mm x 50mm treated decking joists
BATHROOM The bathroom consists of an all in one shower tray that has a close coupled toilet and cistern fitted to the wall and resting on the tray so in the event of a flood from the toilet the water will escape down the drain of the tray. There is an 8.5kw electric shower mounted on the cubicle wall (shower size (Kwh) optional) The tray measures 2000mm x 900mm x 250mm and can be made to measure Bathroom section view
The walls are covered with 150mm x 150mm ceramic tiles (approximately 500) with a 3mm grout space. There is also a 100mm VENTAXIA SELV extractor fan mounted in the ceiling above the tray with a built in timer and internal low voltage light. Turn on the light and the fan starts, turn off the light and the fan will continue to run for the set timed period. This will help

remove any moisture or bad smells in the cubicle from showering or using the toilet. All seams will be sealed with silicone making the cubicle virtually water tight. My pod also contains a hand made solid oak two person soak tub hidden in the floor. When in use it is covered by a hatch in the floor which simply pulls up and rests against the wall out of the way. The tub is solid oak and coated in multiple layers of fiberglass and resin to make it water resistant. It is filled by a flush fitting tap in the top of the tub and drained in the usual way in the floor.
KITCHEN The kitchen needs to incorporate a food prep area, a sink, a washer and a fridge/freezer to keep food fresh. This could be achieved by fitting an all in one unit. A company in Sweden called KITCHOO can supply this and the company will manufacture bespoke units by request. They also come in several option styles as standard, these include (washer/dishwasher, fridge/dishwasher, fridge/drawers) etc. For my pod I have chosen one that combines a washing machine to the bottom left cupboard, a fridge with freezer compartment to the bottom right cupboard, a built in stainless steel sink with pop-up tap and a built in double electric hob to the top right and a draining board in the middle of the two. Above all of this there is a double cupboard for dry goods storage and an under cupboard microwave oven. The upper cupboard has a strip of low voltage LED lights fitted to aid in prep and work There is a cover/splashback over the sink, when not in use this can be folded down and the unit can then double as a work Andrew J Tilly 07024074

desk. This option is the most expensive, obtaining a separate washer and fridge and adding a 1000mm sink base unit and some alterations would be more cost effective. These units are made of 19mm melamine faced chipboard.
BEDROOM/LOUNGE This area needs to incorporate the storage space, living space, sleeping space and entertainment space. All of this can be achieved with one simple piece of furniture! A MURPHY UNIT. This is a combination bed, settee and wardrobe unit. When in normal daytime use, there is a settee, two single wardrobes and eight overhead storage units which can be used for any combination of uses. When night time comes, simply remove the cushions from the settee, pull down the handle and the bed simply folds down making the settee base and the shelf the support legs for the bed. Simple! When finished, make the bed, lift up the base and replace the cushions. Each of the eight storage units are of equal size and can be used to store any variety of things. The second left bottom unit however houses the TV projector and Apple TV control box and DVD player. The wardrobes also contain additional storage features for shoes etc. Murphy bed unit
This picture shows all of the doors open and the bed in the upright position turning it into a settee where it can be used to have informal meals or to just

relax, read a book, open the doors and take in the sounds and sites or simply watch TV, or a DVD.
BEDROOM/LOUNGE cont. Below (right) we can see what the wardrobes look like in the closed position with the bed down. This unit is also made of melamine faced chipboard but 12.5mm instead of 19mm and the doors are shown with or without handles, if no handles are wanted then push to release hinges can be fitted. Murphy bed down with doors open
Murphy bed down with doors closed
FLOOR COVERINGS There are again numerous options for the floor covering, but for my pod I have chosen a short pile carpet tile that is easy to lay, easy to clean and easy replace if damaged. Alternatives are tile, carpet, laminated wood flooring, vinyl flooring.

POD PLACEMENT Because my pod has 2 glass sides and a roof of solar cells it is important to get the placement of the pod correct. It is vitally important that the corner post for the doors be orientated to a westerly direction thus having the sun shine on the pod roof from first light all the way through to late afternoon/early evening and allowing for the enjoyment of the sunset on the deck.
POWER and WATER At the rear of the pod will be a utilities box, in the left side there will be a water meter and stop tap and site connection hose, a cold water connection to a 2.7Kw water heater as well as a separate cold water connection to the 8.5Kw electric shower and the sink. In the event that there is no mains water, an optional under pod water tank and water pump can be added to provide water to the pod. The water heater will easily supply spa bath and sink and washing machine with no problems. All piping will be plastic Hep20 which can easily be ran in the walls. In the right side of the box is the Electricity. This consists of an 8-way consumer unit with 100A RCD main switch and connections for the shower (40A), radial sockets (20A), electric hob (16A), under floor heating (16A), lighting (10A), water heater & optional pump (10A). All wiring will be to the current standards and consist of 2.5mm2 Twin & Earth for the power outlets and 1.0mm2 for the lighting circuits. As an extra precaution a 10mm x 1000mm earth rod will be sunk into the ground by the pod and connected to the distribution board. There will be a connection unit and trailing extension lead for plugging into the site power supply if needed as an emergency. There is also the option of using a portable generator to power the pod. Both of these options will be attached via a rotary selector switch so that only one method of powering the pod can be utilised at any one time. On the roof of the pod is a solar cell array from Solarcentury, this in turn will be connected to Tesla’s own Powerwall 2 device which supplies the whole pod with electrical power and has a back-up battery system that can power the pod indefinitely with its 14Kwh energy storage and it’s 7Kwh power output. When it’s not being used it’s automatically charging itself.

LIGHTING To light my Pod, I wanted something that was economic, powerful enough to light up the whole living/working space with as little room taken up as possible and to be clean. the obvious solution to this is RGB LED lighting. RGB is a mix of Red, Green & Blue Primary Colour LED’s on a sticky back ribbon e.g led’s 1, 4, 7 & 10 etc. is Red, led’s 2, 5, 8, 11 etc. are Green and 3, 6, 9, 12 etc. is Blue. All three on together create White light but any combination of the three can give virtually any colour desirable.
In my pod I will use RGB LED ribbon lighting attached to a lighting pelmet which is just two bits of wood fitted around the pod walls and painted the same colour as the walls to blend in. Here we can see a section view of the Lighting Pelmet and how it would be made up. The whole profile would be no bigger than 25mm (B, F) by 30mm (A) and fixed to the walls every 50mm (G). The white strip represents the RGB LED strip. A 24Volt transformer would be mounted in the Electric box outside and controlled by a credit card sized remote, As the walls are fitted with wardrobes and a cupboard above the sink there would effectively be 8m of usable lighting which would provide approximately 6512 (l/ln m) and use 14.4 (lm/w) power which is more than enough to light up the pod for any purpose. The lighting also comes with a control unit that can dim the lights as well as flash and fade Andrew J Tilly 07024074

27
so you can have a romantic colour fade effect or bright white working light or flashing to music. KEY: lm = lumens. ln m = linear meter. W = watts. RGB = Red Green Blue. LED = Light Emitting Diode. (1 lumen = 1 lux and a standard house only needs 150 lux) and a standard 60w lightbulb puts out 900 lm.
SOCKETS There will be seven double sockets available in my pod two behind the lid for the sink and hob (these will only be usable when the lid is down to comply with IEE regs. and water) One will be behind the kitchen unit to provide power for the washer and fridge and there will be one at both sides of the bed mounted at 500mm from the floor and two in the projector cupboard for the entertainment systems.
ENTERTAINMENT This will be provided by a drop down projection screen mounted in the ceiling by the door opposite the bed end. A projector unit will be mounted in the overhead cupboard which will be attached to an Apple TV box and a DVD player and a digital radio receiver and an amplifier. Sound will be provided by four 8ohm 100w ceiling mounted speakers.
DRAINAGE As this pod will be site based there will be a standard connection to the site drainage system but in the event of this not being possible then a septic tank can be laid under the pod and attached to the pod drains, this will need to be emptied on a regular basis by a specialist contractor. If the pod were to be sited on a flat roof, then the simple addition of a macerator would be required to break down any solid waste matter to enable travel down a small bore pipe network. The roof will drain towards the rear of the pod and any excess water will drain into a soakaway trench that will be dug along the full width of the pod at 500mm distance. This in turn will be filled in with a soakaway box, covered in a drainage cloth and back filled and covered as is appropriate.

PRICE Like most things it costs money to build and money to buy the price for this pod as is would be around £25 to £30k but that is going for expensive options like a soak bath, all in one built in kitchen unit, projector TV etc. going for basics would knock the price down to under £20k. If this were to become a popular product with a high demand, then it could be put into full production with bigger discounts being sought for multiple orders and put to mass production.
OPTIONAL EXTRAS A list of optional extras could be as follows. External Hot tub. Wheel chair access ramp or lift. Under floor heating. All in one built in units as opposed to off the shelf. Pull down/motorised projection screen. Apple TV. DVD player. Single bed unit. One sliding door as opposed to two. Full surround decking. Pergola. Solid oak hand-made two person soak tub. Water pump and water tank. Power generator. Decorative base trellis. The list is endless and is only restricted by one’s imagination and bank balance.

COLOURS
As stated earlier there is a range of colours that the Pod can be painted by request or that can be supplied for self-application. These would be supplied by permachink.com and are available in the following colours.
REFLECTION This has been an interesting journey and something that I have really enjoyed doing. I have always wanted to have my own pod and money permitting someday I will. I believe that I have met the brief 100%, I have provided a sleeping/eating/relaxing space by use of a pull down system with storage space all round. I have provided a washing/shower area with the all in one cubicle and the all in one kitchen unit also with over-head storage. The pod itself is very easy to build with no special skills required other than to have the electrics certified as everything else is plug and play. The cost in my opinion is reasonable considering the optional extras that I have specified. Everything used is virtually off the shelf so therefore easily obtainable and renewable. Speaking with my wife about this project and we both agree that we would have no problem in living in this pod on a permanent basis. I am in no doubt that this design all be it my design would be a practical and affordable LIVING POD solution. During the course of this assignment I have found myself wanting to build this more and more and the more I want it the more ideas I come up with. This may be something that I can pursue after graduation. Andrew J Tilly 07024074
