Cathy's
With Janey Aged 5
Proud At 85
Cathy, what a fantastic life you've had. You were born in 1933, the year the Loch Ness monster was spotted for the first time! You were a young girl of 10 in 1943 that was the same year that both Cilla Black and Tony Blackburn were born. You were 21 and got the 'key of the door' in 1954 the very same year that Roger Bannister became the first man to break the 4 minute mile. In your adult life you worked hard as a nurse, you reached 30 in 1963, that was also the year that Dr Who and the Daleks first appeared on the BBC.

One of your greatest achievements in life was family, that must have made you very proud. In 1973 you turned 40, the year that Value Added Tax (V.A. T.) came into affect (and prices went up!) Your 50th birthday, the great halfcentury, came in 1983 the year that Lester Piggott rode Teenoso to victory for his 9th Epsom Derby win. This year you are 85 years old. You have had a very full life with some wonderful interests and hobbies. You have enjoyed needlework, golf and Australia. Cathy, what a wonderful woman you are.

Nurses in uniform

Bare Legs
I trained as a nurse when I left school. Like most hospitals, ours was very strict about uniforms. We had to wear our thick black stockings right through the summer. Matron would have had a lot to say if anyone had bare legs. I look at youngsters today in the summer, and envy their freedom. They go bare-legged so long now – well into October some of them. On a hot August day though, it would have been nice to feel the fresh air on your legs, or to wear thinner stockings.
When I trained as a nurse in the 1950s we had a very strict Matron. All our hair had to be hidden by a starched white cap. Stockings and shoes were sensible and sturdy. Our blue dresses had to come well below the knee. How different it all looked when I was in hospital for a few days recently. Lots of the nurses wore trousers and tunics. It was lovely to see their shiny clean hair, even if it had to be tied back or kept short. I bet they were dressed and out in half the time it took us, with our caps and collars and studs and pinnies.

Making a Shoe Bag
When I grew up, and when I got the hang of it, I really enjoyed sewing. I made lots of clothes, toys and things for the house. And I made quite a good job of them. But when I was at school, doing needlework lessons, I hated it. It was partly because the teacher was so fussy. I remember making a shoe bag. I sewed it and unpicked it a dozen times before she was satisfied. It should have been a quick and simple job but it took a whole term. It was the first thing I made — and very nearly the last!
On 13th September, 1982, a trial that was talked about all over the world opened in Australia. It concerned the death of a nine week old baby girl. The mother said that the child had been killed by a dingo. The first inquest said that the baby had indeed been killed by a dingo but no body was found. At a second inquest, it was ruled that the baby had been murdered by her parents. They were sent to prison, but released when a baby’s matinee jacket was found near a dingo’s lair.
