Charles Laughton
On 1st July, 1899, Charles Laughton was born in Scarborough, where his parents kept a hotel. He started his working life in the family business. At the same time he was an enthusiastic actor in amateur theatrical productions in Scarborough. His talent was recognised, and his family finally allowed him to become a drama student at RADA, in 1925. Charles Laughton’s first appearances were on stage. His New York stage debut led to several film offers. He soon gave up the stage to follow a career in films. © 2013, Everyday Miracles Ltd. All rights reserved.
The Way We Were
Bus Journey to School
When I started at the secondary school, it was a bus-ride away. Until I met my Stan, I went everywhere on the bus. Stan sometimes borrowed his brother’s car, but in our early days we often travelled by bus. We usually sat at the front on the top deck. You could see for miles over the countryside. As you approached the edge of town, you could see upstairs windows and rooftops and over garden walls. It was a very different view of life from what you saw from the pavement. On the journey home we sat at the back . . . . www.dailysparkle.co.uk

Do You Remember?
!
Two British tennis players in an All England Wimbledon singles final – can you imagine that? Well it happened in the first week of July 1961. Then 29 year old Angela Mortimer met – and beat - 20 year old Christine Truman 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. The 1960s were a pinnacle of British Wimbledon success. Ann Haydon Jones won the Ladies singles in 1969; and joined up with Australian Fred Stolle to take the mixed doubles that same year. We then had to wait until 1977 when Virginia Wade took the Ladies singles. No doubt hope will still spring eternal – but I must admit I don’t think we’ll ever see this again. © 2013, Everyday Miracles Ltd. All rights reserved.
Dear Mary and Jimmy My two grandsons were very excited about their recent house-move. The older one, who is 6, told me that he now sleeps ‘upstairs upstairs’. It took a few more questions to work out that he meant, they now have bunk beds! He has the top one, and has to climb a ladder to get into bed. Both boys were very interested when I told them that when I was in the army, we had bunk beds with three layers. It seemed very strange at first, but you soon got used to it. I expect you can guess why my mate’s nickname was ‘Ham Harry’. Best wishes from George www.dailysparkle.co.uk
