METAMORPHOSIS a spatial analysis of A temporary, “movable” installation, a “post-dramatfranz kafka’s acclaimed novel ic theatrical exhibition” for Franz Kafka’s MetamorProject team: A.Themeli Category: Academic Supervisor: P.Macklin, P. Flanagan Year: 2014

phosis is proposed. A series of chambers offer to the visitor a spatial experience based on the acclaimed novel. Here, the lines of the book are transformed into space, sound, material, movement. The project raises questions about the relationship between literature and architecture, between narrative and space. The objective of the project is to identify the importance of storytelling in the context of interior design and at the same time, investigate the relationship between spectator and spectacle, in order to challenge the traditional ways of perceiving an event and propose a new way of experiencing the happening.

PERFORM SPACE Project team: A.Themeli Category: Academic Supervisor: P.Macklin, P. Flanagan Year: 2014

The idea presumes that the space will be used and inhabited temporarily by individuals or group of artists who are in need of a performance space. The cylindicar form of the building encourages its association with the circular form of the ancient theater. In the meantime, the juxtaposition of the folded human body with the circular form and the cocoon formation indicates exciting relations insofar as the centrality of our body, the dimensionality of our movements and the interpretation of our skin as the minimum architectural space. In search of a design paradigm that articulates space while integrates in a theatrical context, the idea of scaffolding, both as structural and dramatic element, is investigated.

of heterotopia in the Briggait and design a route in which the visitor just like Alice in the Rabbit hole will experience different and versatile feelings. The proposal is a building within the building that consists of multiple, small heterotopias. Depending on the space use, there will be a play with the ceiling’s height, width and lighting in order to highlight the different, multiple experiences and feelings in each space. My aim is to force people to experience and perceive the space using their body. I force them to traverse the floor and be attracted from the route, to enjoy the building, get advantage of the pace in order to stand in more places, just like a trip inside the Briggait. Another intention is to unite the market hall with the dynamic, linear patio in order to design something that stands between the human scale and the building’s scale. project is mostly close-shaped with some openings in the spots where the facilities are found, in order to generate views to the building and allow natural light to enter. Moreover, when looking from the outside, the triangular tessalation of the project generates more shades and emphasizes the presence of light in the Briggait.

By the year 2020, senior citizens will comprise 25% of the total Greek population. One of the most important issues that architecture has to confront, is the relationship between the elderly and space. We propose a new way of designing Houses for Elderly people. Our potential location, based on a realistic scenario is Leonidion, a steeply slopped area with lush vegetation and a panoramic view. The housing units, can accomodate up to 30 residents. These units are supplemented by public spaces such as a lobby, restaurant and a spa. In order to offer various options to the residents, we designed two different workshops. Another important aspect of the design proposal, is the use of different materials. Natural stone, raw concrete, coloured stucco and glass are combined in order to produce a contemporary architectural experience that also refers to and respects the past.

The project concerned the creation of a light, dismantlable construction made of wood. The plot is located in a forest camp. The proposal is simple and straightforward; a single spaced room of 20m2, 0.8 meters above the ground, using a horizontal grid of 0.6 m for the construction. Emphasis is given to the exterior skin of the proposal, a wooden curtain that embraces the space and allows light to enter the interior.

monitoring. When we use the credit card, we converse in the telephone or navigate in the internet, we leave traces. These traces we cannot see them, however they exist. The predominance of software against hardware, changes dramatically the environment, in in which we live and move. How however this influences the architecture? Object of this lecture is the transformation of the significance of space, from the application of proceeding of new surveillance. By the term ‘’new surveillance’’ we define the surveillance which is based on new technologies, practised in everyday life and it is automated and can proceed to classifications( because it aims groups of people and not individuals). The movie ‘’The Conversation’’ and our contact with Michel Foucault’s work on surveillance theory and panopticism, was our incentive for developing our first thoughts on this topic. This lecture tries to impose questions that relate to architecture and surveillance, to the liquidity between public and private space and the contribution of emergent technologies to the reconsideration of space. We will try to make it by following the sequent structure: The presentation is divided in 2 parts: The first part concerns the spatial side of surveillance. It begins with a description of surveillance through the ages. A special reference to Panopticon is also done. Panopticon, a project that even not realised, stands out as a masterpiece of architectural synthesis and surveillance practice. We present Foucault’s theory on contemporary panopticism, an aspect that transfers us to modern societies and to CCTV phenomenon. In the second part of the lecture, we analyse the present and future of surveillance, the no-material side . To understand it, the transformation of body and space in contemporary world is depicted. Moreover, a reference to Internet and Cyberspace in general is done. We result to Electronic Panopticon, a term that combines all previous matters under one simple idea: In our times, the idea of Jeremy Bentham for panopticism is installed more than ever in our society’s stucture. We are all parts of a system that stands as the equal of the panoptic prison. But here, the architectural elements are replaced by new media and technologies.

a house for sylvia plath Project team: A.Themeli, G.Karampelas, M.Kapsimali Category: Competition Year: 2014

A house for Sylvia Plath and her two children is proposed. Located in London, the house is sited in the area of Camden, in an empty plot of the neighborhoud where Sylvia lived after her divorce from her husband. Partly inspired by the bell jar - Sylvia’s one and only novel- as well as by a quote of her where she describes the different aspects of her life as different figs on the branches of a tree, a house that reflects the author’s fragility and illustrates all her different roles is designed. At the base of the tree-inspired form of the house, lies the author’s workspace. The rooms of the house are organised around a central void which provides views, daylight and ventilation. At the same time, it symbolizes the author’s inner self and her ambivalence between the roles of the woman, the lover, the mother and the artist.
