TREXLER PARK PLANTING DESIGN PRINCIPLES, This first phase of the new planting plan for Trexler Park, whlle replacing diseased and senescent trees, is principally intended to reinforce and enhance the original design. In addition, where opportunities for enrichment of the visual experience exist, the vegetation patterns are used to accentuate certain types of views and Vistas, reinforce spatial definition, and buffer parts of the park from adjacent incompatible uses. To illustrate some of these ideas, different types of views are shown on the plan, and further explained in a series of annotated perspective diagrams. The planting plan is shown as a series of generic planting areas, indicated by different symbols. Each planting area is intended to perform a specific function, for example, reinforce and close the edge of an existing woodland, or infill an area with new woodland. Instead of a specific planting plan that shows tree positions, typical 'menus' are offered for each generiC area. The menus offer alternative planting pallettes and typical planting patterns. Each menu can be applied in the area shown by the appropriate symbol. An integral part of the plan are grading and minor path changes. The system wlll allow for an installation that is flexible and repeatable, and gives considerable discretion to the Park Director and his staff in the choice of plants and the actual configurations of planting.
