Four relations between thin and thick circle composition – 2011 24” x 24” x 2.75” Archival pigment print on aluminum, installed on the substrate Dibond®

Andrzej Jakub Olejniczak was born in Łódź, Poland. After earning his Masters in Fine Arts and Graphic Design at ASP (Academy of Fine Arts), he moved to New York City, where he has lived for more than 30 years, leading his own graphic design and visual communications agency while pursuing his work as an artist. His explorations move effortlessly across form, material, and dimension, encompassing painting, photography, sculpture, digital art and 3D objects. His work is included in private collections in the US and Europe, and his product designs have been featured at the MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) Store. Olejniczak pursues his art with a mashup of opposing and complementary impulses: complexity and simplicity, clarity and illusion, precision and dreamlike impressionism. Informed by the principles of generative art, Olejniczak’s mind and vision endlessly spin out algorithms for his artistic expression — digital, analog, random, playful. His work embodies his fascination with serendipity and how it influences the creative process. He wonders: “Is there an end in this process: that is the question… my question.” Presented here are a few of the mileposts passed on his journey. Each piece holds its own secrets, and it is his hope that each also offers its own reward.

“The principles of geometry both guide me and present a point of departure. Space, light, time, and movement are my tools. The division, arrangement, and collision of planes leads me to solutions, expected and not. So I return again and again to geometric objects and forms, inspired by the endless possibilities that result from shifts and variation in perspective, color, dimension, and function.”

— Andrzej Jakub Olejniczak 13

“33 variations,” the Mirage series, premiered in 2013 at Olimpus Gallery in Łódź, Poland. Conceived as variable views of an unseen whole,* these multilayered compositions have been configured to invite the viewer to see what’s there and fill in what’s not in their own way. While the geometric logic is crisp and clear, the images are rendered with a misty, mirage-like quality, creating a feeling of vibration and subtle movement. Viewed individually, the configurations capture a moment in time, suggesting a pause in time and 14 space. Additionally, each configuration holds its own sense of rhythm and energy, along with the suggestion of the pace of movement. Whether viewed together or individually, the goal of “33 variations” is to engage the viewer in a mesmerizing journey of movement.

“Everybody has the same energy potential. The average person wastes his in a dozen little ways. I bring mine to bear on one thing only: my paintings, and everything else is sacrificed to it... myself included.” — Pablo Picasso
