Unit 1016

How to carry out basic cavity walling

Cavity walls are mainly used for house building and extension work to existing homes and flats. They consist of two separate walls built with a cavity between, joined together by metal ties. In most cases the outer wall is made of brick with the inner skin made of block. The main reason for this type of construction is to protect the inside from water penetration, caused by rain and other weather elements. This unit also supports NVQ Unit VR 39 Joint Brick and Block Structures. This unit contains material that supports TAP Unit 2: Set Out for Masonry Structures and Unit 3: Erect Masonry Structures. It also contains material that supports the delivery of the five generic units.

This unit will cover the following learning outcomes: Selecting the required quantity and quality of resources to construct cavity walling and form joint finishes Constructing cavity walling straight lengths and forming joint finishes Constructing cavity walling return corners and forming joint finishes.
