Passion for wildlife Once again Torrevieja has been awarded blue flags on the beaches El Cura, Los Náufragos, Cala Piteras, Los Locos and La Mata, and also in the Real Club Náutico of Torrevieja and Marina Internacional. But there is more to the town than beaches, as we have a large natural park around the two salt lakes; and these are attracting more and more wildlife, especially birds. There are observation areas where it is possible to observe them in their natural habitat. Thanks to Terry Roebuck for these photos of some of these birds.

Torrevieja Yesterday Passion for History

Torrevieja is fortunate to have a large collection of black and white photographs recording most events, thanks to the work of photographers Darblade, Conesa, Sala, Vera, García etc. The examples here give a brief account of the first tower of La Mata originally a Roman wooden one; another is the Torre del Moro pertaining to Cabo Cervera, the Eras de la Sal warehouse, a model of which can be seen in the Sea & Salt Museum that includes the no longer standing Torre Vieja. The Inmaculada church has altered over the years, but has been in the town centre as an important part of the collective soul of the townsfolk. Salt was the prime reason for Torrevieja and a reminder is the wooden quay, where salt was laboriously carted and dumped into small boats, then rowed out to waiting ships to be manhandled on board them – an arduous task. There was no harbour, but a bay open to the elements and in bad weather ships were often shipwrecked.

Property purchasing deposits secure and guaranteed. Notary fees, taxes, power of attorney and obtaining NIE numbers explained and assistance available. Torrevieja Today But the town had a good reputation for building fine wooden sailing ships of various classes and an example is the Pascual Flores which was sunk during the Spanish civil war of 1936-39 then re-floated and after a history was bought and refurbished and today is an important part of the museum’s Floating exhibitions. Tourism has always been an important part of the town’s life and central was the paseo Vista Alegre that has had various names and been altered several times. The Casino was a centre point for cultural activities and tourists used spas to drop into the water, helped by local women. The Nuevo Cinema also provided entertainment, not only films but theatrical events as well, and the Municipal theatre has replaced this. Visitors arrived by the train or the bus and several windmills were a recognizable feature on the horizon. The colored photos can be related to the black and white ones. Today thousands come to enjoy the sea, sands, parks, culture and fiestas, by rail, bus, car and plane... and others by sea.
