CHANGING EVERYTHING

I

knew I had definitely gained some weight over the past 30 years, but in my mind the solution was simple. All I had to do was start training for a long distance triathlon again and I’d magically transported back to my racing weight of the mid 1980’s. I thought the reason that I had gained weight over the years was tied to aging-I just turned 65- and a normal slowdown of our metabolism.

In January of 2015, after finishing a workout at Orange Theory in Encinitas, CA, I spotted a mobile unit in the parking lot that was doing Body Composition Analysis (www.bodyfattest. com). They weighed you dry and then in a dunk tank to really let you know where you stand.

During that test I weighed in at a robust 184 pounds, my body fat was 24.4% and I had 44.95 pounds of fat in my body. Did I think to change my eating habits? No. Did I vow to ride, run, swim and take hot yoga more often? Absolutely.

But nothing really changed for me until, on one of my Babbittville Radio shows last July, I interviewed Dr. David Clayton, who had left Scripps Hospital to open up a fitness and nutrition center. During the interview he told me that he was tired of prescribing medication for his patients over 50 and the idea behind his fitness center was to have people combine nutrition and training to take better control of their lives.

I told Dr. Clayton that I really never thought about what I ate and there was no way I was going to become one of those eat- five- meals- a -day people who are constantly measuring their food and thinking about everything they put into their body. I asked the good doctor to give me a verbal clue, something a simple person like myself could think about before I jammed something bad into my mouth. What he said was so simple and, to me, it made all the sense in the world: “If it wasn’t around a million years ago,

don’t eat it,” Dr. Clayton insisted. “And, if it has a label it, it wasn’t around a million years ago, so don’t eat it.”

This was in July of 2015. The next day I changed everything. I stopped eating bread, grains, pizza, sugar, salt, butter, soft drinks, alcohol, dairy and gluten. My drink of choice became soda water with lime. My wife, Heidi, bought in 100%-that’s essential- and, using some of Dr. Clayton’s recipes and also creating her own, started making muffins for me using almond flour and other treats using coconut oil and coconut milk.

I started eating two of her muffins each morning with a banana along with an apple or orange.

By September I noticed that my shorts and jeans were getting loose and I was needing a belt for the first time in years.

The most amazing part of this journey was that I wasn’t training any more than I had before drastically changing my diet. I learned that the key to losing weight, in my humble opinion, is 95% diet.

I went back to the dunk tank last November and guess what? My weight had dropped from 184 to 161.4 pounds, my body fat went from 24.4% to 16% and the amount of fat in my body dropped from 44.95 pounds to 25.8 pounds.

My energy is constant, I feel like I’m eating more food than ever before and I feel so much better when I’m working out. Imagine running with two ten pound bowling balls and then running without them. I learned the hard way that without them is awesome!

The best part? Even though I’m now 65, I’m back to my racing weight from the 1980’s and racing pretty darn well. I’ve even convinced some of my fellow members of the 60 to Death age group to give the Million Year Plan a go and every one of them has lost weight immediately.

Now, I’m not saying this program will work for you. All I’m saying is that it works for me and I feel better than I have in years.

I

’m not entirely comfortable with the term “superfood.” It implies that certain foods have miraculous or supernatural properties, which is not true. It’s also unfair to the many natural, whole foods that don’t get the “superfood” label. In my opinion, there’s something super about every natural, whole food—even potatoes!

Nevertheless, there are particular foods that I notice time and time again in the diets of elite runners, and these foods really do deserve the label of “Superfoods for Runners.” Some of them are proven performance enhancers while others simply offer a convenient and tasty way to meet the special nutritional needs of endurance athletes. Here are my top ten.

COFFEE

Coffee has a whole host of health benefits.

It is proven to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, depression, liver disease, skin cancer, and type 2 diabetes.

These benefits come in part from coffee’s high concentration of antioxidants and in part from its caffeine content. Caffeine is also proven to enhance endurance performance by reducing perceived exertion. That’s right: it literally makes exercise feel easier!

ALMONDS

A 2014 study conducted by Chinese and American researchers found that daily consumption of whole almonds by trained cyclists and triathletes improved performance by 8.4 percent. This effect was attributed to the high concentration of antioxidants in almonds.

BEETS

Beets are rich in dietary nitrates, which work as natural vasodilators in the body. Studies have shown that consuming beet juice before exercise increases blood flow and enhances performance.

Fish is proven to improve the functioning of the brain and the cardiovascular system, both of which are critical to endurance performance.

Albacore tuna is a great source of the essential fatty acids that are responsible for these benefits and it has the added benefits of being popular, easy to find, and relatively inexpensive.

DARK CHOCOLATE

Life is no fun without dessert. But some desserts are healthier than others. The healthiest of all is dark chocolate, which improves heart health. And believe it or not, people who eat dark chocolate frequently actually tend to be slightly thinner than those who eat it less often!

Like quinoa, sweet potato is a high-carb food that helps runners meet their energy needs but is also packed with other goodies. One serving offers 27 grams of carbohydrate, more than double the amount of vitamin A as you need in a day, the super antioxidant beta-carotene, and a variety of other phytonutrients.

It can be difficult to get all of the carbohydrate you need as a runner without eating grains.

Quinoa, an increasingly popular grain from South America, offers a whopping 54 grams of carbs per half-cup serving. But it also contains a lot more protein, unsaturated fat, and antioxidants than most other grains.

SPINACH

According to a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control, spinach is the fifth-most nutrient-dense food on the planet. So why am I talking about spinach here instead of the four foods (beet greens, chard, Chinese cabbage, and watercress) that came in ahead of it? Because spinach tastes better and is more familiar to most people. Plus, it’s incredibly versatile: Eat in raw in salads, cooked as a side dish, or blend it into a fruit smoothie and drink it.

Tart cherries contain special compounds that function as natural anti-inflammatories in the body. That’s a good thing for runners, who experience mild inflammation after every run as a result of muscle damage incurred during the workout. These compounds are especially concentrated in tart cherry juice, which is proven to help runners recover faster between runs.

In one study, recreational runners were given either cherry juice or a placebo for five days before running a marathon. Afterward, The runners who’d gotten the cherry juice exhibited less muscle damage and lower levels of inflammation. They also recovered their muscle strength significantly quicker.

YOGURT

An important part of getting race ready is getting down to your ideal racing weight. Yogurt can help you do that. According to a large study conducted by researchers at Harvard Medical School, yogurt is the single most slimming food in the American diet. They found that people who eat yogurt most frequently gain the least weight throughout their adulthood. The slimming effect of yogurt has been linked to the bacteria it contains, known as probiotics. These bacteria affect the digestive bacteria that live in the human gut in ways that inhibit the storage of body fat. These same bacteria make yogurt more digestible for people who are lactose intolerant and therefore can’t consume other dairy products such as milk. !

TrainingPlace TOP CYCLING ROUTES IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

f you are a cyclist in California, you’ve ridden on the Historic Pacific Coast Highway 101. It’s easily the most popular cycling route on the west coast. While the majesty of the ocean and beach are synonymous with California, head east and you’ll find some fantastic riding with these top cycling routes in San Diego, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara.

If it’s your first time leaving the friendly confines of the coast, I suggest one of the rides recommended for beginners. Many of the rides require a great deal of bike handling skill and include interaction with traffic on open roads – be sure that you are prepared to deal with both.

SAN DIEGO SWAMI’S LOOP

The 38 mile long Swami’s loop is home to the similarly named World Famous Swami’s Ride on Saturdays that starts from Nytro multisport in Encinitas. Whether it’s Saturday with the group or a weekday with friends, you’ll always find cyclists using this route as part of their training. The route turns east through LaCosta before turning south into Elfin Forest and east to Escondido where you can refill your water bottle at the “Church” spicket—the regrouping location of many rides on this course. Riders then head back along Del Dios and through Rancho Santa Fe to the coast.

With undulating terrain and respectable hills, this is a great course to spin through or get a hard effort in.

Recommended for: Beginners, Novice, and Expert Cyclist.

GREAT WESTERN LOOP The Great Western Loop is a popular east county cycling route in San Diego. This 42 mile loop takes cyclists through Willow Glen, Dehesa, Japatul, Lyons Valley, and Jamul featuring elevation gains that will make you feel like your climbing the mountains of the Tour de France.

One of the highlights of this ride is stopping to regroup with riders at the Lyons Valley Trading Post. The donkey across from the store named Black Jack, is a welcome mid ride distraction and part of the tradition of this ride—just please don’t feed him human food.

LOS ANGELES THE DONUT LOOP The Donut Loop in Palos Verdes is one of the oldest routes in Southern California dating back to when it started in front of a donut shop. The route is 28 miles long, and covers the Palos Verdes peninsula from east to west.

This loop is good for a weekend warrior or any

cyclist or triathlete training for a race. This ride is a solid rolling loop that is as challenging as it is with gorgeous views of Catalina, Point Vicente Lighthouse, Fort MacArthur, and the open space of the peninsula itself.

Recommend for: Beginners, Novice and Expert Cyclists

GLENDORA ROAD/ MT. BALDY You may be familiar with this ride if you’re a fan of the Tour of California. The 44 mile route is one of the most famous climbs in SoCal – Glendora Mountain Road to Mount Baldy ski area. The road hugs a tight slope with incredible views while weaving in and out of the mountainside. The climb includes 3 miles of grades that range from 10-16% that resemble the Alps. You can get a welcomed respite during your ride—late in the climb— by stopping at the ski resort for a snack before heading on up towards the summit.

SANTA MONICA TUNA CANYON

SANTA BARBARA GIBRALTAR ROAD

With it’s many canyons, and winding climbs and descents, the Santa Monica Mountains are the antithesis of what comes to mind when you mention SoCal. Between Mullholland, Topanga, and the many other routes through the mountains, my favorite is the 27 mile loop of Tuna Canyon. Ride this route in the spring, and you’ll see tons of wildflowers, and very few cars or homes.

To get to Tuna Canyon, head east on Piuma Canyon Rd road through the steep canyons that will take you up to Saddle Peak Rd. where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the SoCal shoreline.

From this point on, Tuna Canyon will reward you with an epic descent. Tuna Canyon is a cyclist’s nirvana—a one way, slaloming road, that hugs the pristine canyon’s every bend.

The road spills you out onto the Coast Hwy where you can head over to Malibu Farms for a post ride meal, or explore one of the other canyons leading up into the mountains. Recommended for: Novice to Expert Cyclists

If you look east in Santa Barbara you’ll see mountains, and that’s exactly where Gibraltar Road goes—into the mountains.

I like to start at Tucker’s Grove for this 22 mile ride so that I can get a few miles in to warm up before I hit reach the This is a relentless climb with 8 miles of inclines ranging from 6-12% grade.

Save some gears as the top half is steeper than the bottom half on this climb. At the top of the climb, you’ll roll onto Camino Cielo and its breathtaking views spanning 360 degrees of Santa Barbara County.

The return trip down to the coast is a fun one on an old stage road that will keep your heart rate high and test your handling skills.

Depending on your preference, finish up by heading over to Handlebar Roasters or Hollister Brewery for the perfect atmosphere to revel in your achievement.

Recommended for: Seasoned Novices and Expert Cyclists

HONORABLE MENTIONS Henshaw Loop– 100+ mile route in San Diego includes Palomar Mountain, and very pro cyclist or triathlete uses this to route as part of their training.

Thousand Palms/Dillon Road – 20 miles of non stop pedaling on this often windy ride.
