Ben’s interest in F1 Sidecar Racing started in 2006 with a visit to watch a friend participate; it inspired him to buy a 1989 F1 Derbyshire enabling him to try out the sport with family and friends - often spending more time on the grass than on the track!
The first time John ever got on a sidecar was in a club round at Oulton Park in 2002 with Tim Reeves just for a few laps, followed later that year by his first race (with Tim’s dad, Brian) in a BEMSEE round in France where they finished 2nd and 3rd.
In 2007 it was time to get serious and things began to take shape with the purchase of an LCR monoque chassis, team kit, vans and trailers.
Yet more podium finishes were achieved riding in the BEMSEE Championship with John Easedown. In 2003 John rode with Neal Cornwall in the British Championship finishing 3rd overall, and went one better with a 2nd overall finish riding in the European Championship with Tony Williams, also securing wins at Knockhill, Oschersleben and Froberg where they still hold the lap record. 2004 saw John race in the Eastern Airways Championship with Stuart Muldoon where they competed in the top five throughout the season.
2008 was a year of steady progress and by 2009 Ben achieved a 3rd overall position in the BMRC Championships as well as the prestigious Young Driver of the Year Award. 2010 saw the involvement of Roger Body with the British Championship, which meant sponsorship deals and fantastic organisation. This was the first official season the class had gained British Championship status and featured in the Thundersport GB Series; it also received television and media exposure on Motors TV. It was also Ben’s first full season at British level with a well-earned 9th position overall. The highlight of the year was undoubtedly a podium finish in the ‘wet’ at Donnington Park. The last two rounds were helped by having Callum Lawson as a replacement passenger who made a really positive difference to the team at the end of the season. Ben continued to work with Callum through 2011 and, with the additional support, they became a more professional team resulting in a credible 5th position finish in the British Championships with four 4th place finishes, very narrowly missing out on podium positions on a couple of occasions. August Bank Holiday was a really exciting race with a 5th place finish in the first-ever World GP in Germany. 2012 saw Ben continue to improve with a podium position in the Eastern Airways British Sidecar Championship at Snetterton, where he holds the club lap record.
That same year saw John participate in his first World Championship race in Cartagena with Billy Galros which they won! The partnership with Billy continued through 2005 when they achieved a few podium finishes and 5th overall in the World Championship, but disappointingly the pair were plagued by breakdowns in the 2006 season. Although John did not participate in full championships in the years that followed, he had many successful individual rides - a 2nd at the Lydden Burn-Up in 2008 (with Sean Hegarty), a win in Spa with Tim Reeves in the Dutch Championship and another at the 2009 Lydden Burn-Up. His last British Championship race was in 2010 at Knockhill, again with Tim Reeves, with wins in both races and they still hold the lap record. So ... what for next season? New bike purchased New, experienced and previously successful passenger, John Briggs Mentoring from four times World Champion, Tim Reeves Initial testing this year has been very positive with three 2nd place finishes achieved - one from the back of the grid! With continued focus on improving qualifying times to enable a better position on the grid, Bygrave Racing is undoubtedly well placed to have a dramatic impact on the 2014 season and ultimately to achieve Ben’s goal to be the British and World F1 Sidecar Champion.
