Message from the Organizing Committee

Dear IFMSA Family,

It is with great pleasure, passion and motivation that we invite you to apply to be part of the Training 4 All (T4All) journey, between the 1st and 5th of September 2021, in Guimarães, Portugal.

Capacity Building is one of the milestones of IFMSA Mission and Vision, aiming to empower students to be the leaders of today, whilst inspiring them to take action at a local level, reaching not only communities, but also individuals. We believe that it is up to each one of us collectively, as National Member Organizations, to do what it is within our reach to provide IFMSA members with opportunities that enable them to develop the needed skills and competencies to promote change in the health arena.

With these thoughts in mind, we decided to organize the eighth edition of our SRT. Even though the world is living in an extraordinary time, where COVID-19 insists on threatening and disrupting our daily life, T4All OC 2021 aims to bring you the most memorable edition, with an amazing social and cultural program and brand new training topics to be covered as relevant as Health Emergencies.

Portugal is a country well known for its people and the warm welcoming that characterizes them. It is a country filled with astonishing natural landscapes, perfect for sightseeing and sharing experiences and moments whilst enjoying the company of like-minded people.

Are you ready to turn your world upside down and reinvent yourself? Join us in Guimarães, The Founding of a New Tomorrow.

ANEM - Portugal

The Portuguese Medical Students’ International Committee (ANEM - Portugal), founded in 1983, represents and engages more than 12000 medical students from 8 Local Committees. ANEM - Portugal envisions sustainable medical and healthcare systems, capable of promoting high standards of health and well-being in Portugal.

The Federation work is divided into several areas of action such as Public Health, Medical Education, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, Medical Ethics & Human Rights, Research and Professional Exchanges and Capacity Building.

ANEM-Portugal has been part of the International Federation of Medical Students Associations (IFMSA) since 1983, actively engaging in its work and representing Portuguese Medical Students in IFMSA General Assemblies. For the past years, driven by our passion for Capacity Building, the vision that we are helping IFMSA to increase its impact, as well as engaging and connecting more members worldwide, ANEM - Portugal has organized several editions of its famous Sub Regional Training, Training4All.

Over the past 37 years, the Federation has developed initiatives, projects and campaigns, and has advocated for the pressing issues that matter to achieve ANEM - Portugal’s vision, working closely with the Directorate-General of Health, Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education and Ministry of Health.

IFMSA and Sub Regional Trainings

The International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations was founded in 1951 as an organization of medical students, for medical students and by medical students. For more than 60 years, the Federation has not only been a dynamic platform of opportunities for the future physicians but has also served as their voice at the international level.

Every single activity in IFMSA aims to empower medical students from around the world to be agents for positive change in their communities. It is in IFMSA’s projects, trainings, activities, campaigns and workshops that magic happens.

A Sub Regional Training (SRT) - such as T4All - is an international meeting supported by the IFMSA, where members and motivated students from a (sub)region or sometimes even further away can meet and participate in trainings, workshops and small working groups.

From

A to P: Advocacy and Policy-Making on Health, Environment and Climate Change

Climate Change is one of the greatest Global Health threats of the 21st century, impacting the health of humans, animals and the environment. It can lead to an increase in extreme weather events and natural disasters that contribute to the emergence of new diseases and raise tensions within the populations due to the depletion of resources. As future health professionals, we need to address Global Health. So, this training's main goal is to empower medical students worldwide with sufficient knowledge on Health, Environment and Climate Change to become global advocates for a future healthier, greener and more sustainable world.

FITI: From Idea To Impact

FITI provides the opportunity to develop and strengthen activity management skills. By centering our training in the three stages of project management, we aim to empower medical students to lead projects and activities that positively impact their community and to give them the knowledge and skills to take on health leadership roles.

Health Workforce: The Key for Strengthening Health Systems

We are facing a health workforce crisis that is evolving towards insufficient human resources to address the health of the growing population, with longer lifespans and a higher prevalence of diseases. Adversities such as brain drain, worker retention, and access to specialties are leading to the ongoing crisis of quality, quantity, socio-economic conditions and distribution of healthcare professionals.

8

It is urgent to implement the right policies on a national and international level, invest in education and job creation in the health sector and establish strong interdisciplinary and multisectoral collaboration to achieve equality, universal health coverage and social cohesion.

As a sustainable health workforce has a significant role in achieving universal health coverage and strengthening health systems worldwide, this workshop is an opportunity to deepen participants' understanding of the challenges regarding Human Resources for Health and equip them with the tools to take an active role in this field.

ITDM: International Training on Disaster Medicine

The increasing number of disasters over the last century emphasized the necessity to address the lack of training in the medical management of disaster response. Training the health forces, implementing disaster risk reduction approaches and disseminating information on disaster risk in the communities will strengthen health systems, making them more resilient to disasters.

As the future health workers are willing to respond to public health emergencies and disasters but lack the competencies and skills to do so, this training aims to complement the medical curriculum by providing the basic knowledge on disaster medicine and humanitarian health, and respect towards the sanctuary of health services, with a holistic humanitarian approach of health in the larger setting of disaster management.

City of Guimarães

Guimarães is regarded fondly as the birthplace of Portugal, as it was here that the first king, Afonso Henriques, was born and it was briefly the capital city of the fledgling country in 1096. The historical centre in the area that was within the Guimarães city walls, is associated with the formation and identity of Portugal, and was classified a World Heritage site based on the originality and authenticity applied in its restoration. The city still has a harmonious, well-preserved heritage that is evident in the graceful iron verandas, granite balconies and porticos, mansions, arches connecting the narrow streets, paving slabs smoothed by time, towers and cloisters. For a moment you might imagine yourself to be in a mediaeval setting, where the nobility built their houses over time.

13

Transportation

Portugal is the westernmost country of mainland Europe, situated at the south west point of Europe, in the Iberian Peninsula. It is bordered on the East and North by Spain and on the West and South by the Atlantic Ocean, therefore the easiest way to reach the country is by plane.

We highly recommend participants to arrive in Oporto, at the Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport, since this is the closest airport to the city of Guimarães. The OC will assure your transportation on the arrival day from the Airport to the accommodation/venue on the arrival day and from accommodation/venue to the Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport on the departure day. Selected applicants will be notified by email with more details regarding transportation.

If this is not the most viable option, you can also arrive at the Humberto Delgado Airport, in Lisbon, or Faro International Airport, in Faro. In case you prefer these options you will have to take a train at Oriente Train Station, in Lisbon, or Faro Train Station, in Faro, to Oporto or directly to Guimarães (CP Website).

Nevertheless, if you have any issues regarding this topic, feel free to contact the OC and we will clarify your doubts.
