The following mind map explores the different ideas and concepts I have generated in order to come up with a number of design solutions. From this mind map I have gained a broader idea of the problems found in society that require real life solutions. As a design student, I wish to use my major design project as an example of the work I can produce; using it to get into a design school. Considering I want to be a graphic designer, the most appropriate design solution would be something along the lines of magazine design, typography or graphic fashion design. Creating a wearable, would be something I am interested in. I would like to broaden my skills in fashion design, and see where it takes me. However, I believe I should stick to something that will show my computer skills more. Jewellery design was another potential idea; however I have created jewellery in in previous projects. I believe I will benefit more if I try something new and challenge myself further. Jewellery is a very popular subject and does in fact cover fashion/ accessories; however it appears limited to me as it is only a limited aspect of fashion, whilst a magazine can offer issues such as art design and fashion. As I have previously made jewellery I feel a new direction would be more stimulating and also further test my design abilities and understanding the fashion industry. Ultimately from this mind map, I can clearly argue that magazine design would be the best idea and something I would like to work on in order to improve existing magazines. With my skills in creative design, creating a magazine
As a student of design, who wishes to pursue tertiary education and an eventual career in the industry, the most beneficial idea would be to use my HSC year as a means of preparing for future possible employment. The idea would be to examine the needs of entering a course in graphic design and work towards filling the needs of entry into the course by developing a portfolio of work that can be used in an interview situation. Based on discussions with primary sources in industry, the best way to establish credibility is showing people first-hand what I can accomplish. This would mean looking at specific course of interest and employment opportunities to better understand what is needed to succeed. By understanding the way to succeed, this project could not only fulfil my HSC needs, but also aid my ability to obtain my aspirations as a Graphic Designer.

I generated this “interests mind map to clearly map out and brainstorm all of my current interests and skills that could be used as the basis of my MDP. A lot of the ideas featured have something to do with creative art, design and fashion. If I was to pick a couple of ideas that’s stood out I would definitely say art (drawing), communication design (typography, magazines) and branding (spray paint, posters) would be my top three interests. From the 3 interests listed, I can easily base a design project around them. For instance if I was to design a magazine I could draw or paint the featured images, design the layout, font and typography as well as successfully promote and advertise it through artistic and creative marketing. This mind map was definitely beneficial for me, as it gave me a clear outline of what kind of design project I should be steering towards. The three ideas would benefit me greatly in the pursuit of my project because ultimately I need to prove to a design college that I have the potential to be a graphic designer for both individual and commercial use. If I demonstrate my skills through a magazine, it will provide me with more opportunities to develop the skills I will need to use in the future.

A problem that exists to me as an individual design student is my desire to enter the Billy Blue college of Design. Ultimately I am striving to become a graphics designer. Therefore if I am able to achieve this through my Major Design Portfolio/Project I will be able to chase my dreams of becoming a graphics designer. Thus, a need exists, not only for myself, but anybody wishing to apply to Billy Blue, to develop a portfolio of work to demonstrate my ability and eligibility to enter the college. This problem will be explored in this next section to demonstrate that achieving this goal is a design project in itself.

According to research, there are many different/specific levels of design. The different levels of design indicate how far or experienced an individual as a designer is considered in the design industry. The following terms are used to describe the levels of designer: Mac Operator/Entry Level Designer: this term is often used to describe designers who are involved in the print industry. Other terms they are recognised by include “Mac specialist,” “art worker,” “entry level designer,” or even simply “graphic designer”. Mac Operators use Desktop publishing and page layout software with a high level of proficiency. Mid-Level Designer: Mid-level designers often have a few years of experience and are involved in occupations such as Advertising agencies, marketing companies, dedicated design firms. “This is the stereotypical graphic design job.” Senior Designer: Individuals who have 6 or more years of experience can often enter into the senior designer level of design. They are the designers who consult their work with art/creative directors and report back to them on past projects or new design solutions. Art/Creative Director: Art/creative directors are the most respectable designers in the industry with 10 or more years of experience. It takes a lot of work to become an art director. Initially their job is to review and modify all major work, as it is filtered through them. “They have the ultimate say on the direction of the creative, specific artwork used, how the tasks are split up and more. They also manage a good deal of the client relations.” Graphics design is a design field that can offer many different job opportunities and design titles. The different directions in which this design field can take you include Print and digital. However, considering my design abilities I have only researched the areas of design associated with print.
-5-
“The digital world.” This field includes working with advertising and communication to society, where designers print their work in order to be displayed in a variety of environments.
Package Design: A package designer’s work can be seen all around us. They fill the shelves in the supermarket with their designs on cans, bottles, bags and packets Advertising/Marketing: Advertising/marketing jobs can be both digital and print. Advertising/Branding: Within advertising/marketing comes branding. This recognises the public image of brands and companies associated with products in the consumer market.
“Advertising can and does completely shape the way consumers perceive a brand.” 1
Print Publication Designer: Magazines and newspapers were the Internet of yesterday and are still a large part of everyday information consumption for many people. Every single page in these daily, weekly, monthly, bi-monthly and annual publications has to be designed, compiled and organized by teams of Mac Operators, Graphic Designers and Creative Directors. Take a look at the number of pages in any magazine, then takes a look at the magazine section of your local bookstore to see how many there are and you’ll see that
“This is definitely a field that can only exist through the hard work of talented designers.” 1
http://thesiteslinger.com/blog/career-options-10-types-of-graphic-design-jobs-to-consider/
Logo Design: “If you’re good with a pencil and tend to be more of an artist than a designer, logo design is a perfect field for to pursue. “ The information and research from the website “The Site Slinger” is helpful in indicating what types of graphics design jobs are available for a designer to consider. It is especially relevant and helpful through this particular extract above (Print Publication Designer.) The reason I have included this extract is to demonstrate the exact definition and description of the job Print Publication designer. This is the kind of field I wish to enter when I graduate. In considering creating a magazine for my major Design project, I have discovered that a magazine in the real world is designed, compiled and organised by teams of mac operators, graphic designers and creative directors. Reflecting on this, taking on a magazine design project will be a lot of hard work, especially if I am to do it on my own. However I am willing to undertake this project and discover what it takes to be a print publication designer (in the field of graphics design.) -6-
Benefits of UNI or Private College Now that I have a better idea of all the different design fields associated with graphics design, I will now peruse to research how my chances of becoming a graphics designer could be improved by going to a private college or university. The following list contains examples of design colleges in NSW. Billy Blue School of Graphic Arts http://www.billyblue.nsw.edu.au Certificate III in Design Fundamentals - 18 weeks Advanced Diploma of Communication Design (with streams in Communication Design and Multimedia Design) - 2 years Associate Degree in Communication Design - 2 years Associate Degree in Multimedia Design - 2 years Bachelor of Design (Communication Design) - 3 years Bachelor of Design (Multimedia Design) - 3 years Northern Sydney Institute of TAFE Hornsby Certificate III Design Fundamentals Certificate IV Graphic Design Advanced Diploma of Graphic Design http://nsitwww.tafensw.edu.au Shillington College Sydney Melbourne Brisbane http://www.shillingtoncollege.com.au Certificate IV in Design 3 months full-time or 1 year part-time Entry requirements: I have picked three potential design schools to study graphics design. Ultimately my aim is to get into Billy Blue College of design. However there are other colleges such as Shillington College and Northern Sydney Institute of Tafe that offer similar courses. Billy Blue requires potential students to submit a portfolio of 6-10 pieces of creative work (completion of HSC, minimum of 64 ATAR). Billy Blue offers both diploma and bachelor of design courses. Shillington College don’t require a portfolio submission, because the aim of the course is to finish with a professional design folio. Applicants also don’t require any previous experience. To gain entry into a graphic design course (certificate IV) at NSI of Tafe, there are no entry requirements. Out of the options above, Billy blue seems to be the best option. Despite having more specific entry requirements compared to the other courses, however I think I would enjoy and benefit more from Billy blue. Therefore, if the portfolio documents the process of design in 3 products, I will then only need a minimum of 3 more creative pieces to complete my entry. Thus, my HSC MDP portfolio is clearly related to the need and beneficial for me when i enter into a design school.
-7-
Out of the options above, Billy Blue appears to be the best option for me as a designer. Despite having more specific entry requirements compared to the other courses, they do purport to offer higher levels of education as evident in it Bachelor Degrees as well as its high reputation and connections with large design firms. While experience and opportunity will count for future career opportunities, my options would be improved with this higher level of education. The focus of this project will now be based around the Billy Blue School of Design as a potential source of inspiration as by meeting the higher requirements of this College the potential or option to study at the other schools as a second choice is still possible. Through this portfolio and my project, I can gain an understanding of the essential design needs and briefs that will be required of me in the future. Furthermore I will now how to handle and execute designs that are ensured to meets the design brief and needs of the user.

http://www.ofazomi.org/resources/where-to/get-a-design-education/public-university-vprivate-art-school-v-top-tier-art-colleg
An article from: Explores the differences between attending a private college or university, and what will improve my skills as a designer. Initially the main objective is to get a job in Graphic design. PUBLIC UNIVERSITY V. PRIVATE ART SCHOOL V. TOP TIER ART COLLEGE Ultimately according to “Ofazomi.org” despite what a designer may have in their portfolio, employers usually look into what kind of degree or bachelor you have, especially paying attention to where you have studied. Therefore it is absolutely crucial that you enter a design school that is widely recognised and respected for its reputation in the design field. For instance a top tier art college is more respected for its reputation compared to a public university. Although, public universities often tend to focus a lot on the designers portfolio and sample work, which can enhance their chances of getting into the design field. Why Public University? Public university offers you the constituent factors of design. This is beneficial as your knowledge in liberal arts will be more efficient and of higher quality. This means that you will have a deeper understanding about interconnection “the very basis of art and design.” However, a negative aspect of Public University is that you don’t get to develop and practice your artistic skill as much as you would, compare to an art school. Why Art School? “Art school offers you technique.” This means art school students will be able to further develop their skills in art and design through the simple process of practice. Art making practice consequently results in great technique. Why Top Tier? Also known as the “Ivy league” schools of art/design. Attending these schools comes with a number of privileges. However, they are often very expensive and competitive. One benefit on attending a top tier school is, prior to graduating, graduates are informed of job opportunities before anyone else. Another benefit is Ivy League artists and employers hire people who are also Ivy League graduates. Ultimately Top Tier design schools offer its students confidence in the field. This article has provided me with information as to what kind of schools is available to attend, in order to study design. Some schools offer more privileges than others, for instance public universities. Judging from the information above, I believe the best option for me as an individual would be to attend a private college of design. The reason I have decided on this is because private colleges are more known to focus solely on design, whereas a university offers a variety of different subjects or courses that may not be exactly the same design field I wish to enter.

Industry Advice In order to get a better idea of what I want to pursue after graduating, I have decided to interviewed my cousin Leisa Maait, who is in fact in the in design industry. She works as the art director of Cosmopolitan Magazine. The reason I have done this, is initially to ask her for advice, as she is experienced in the industry. As a result of this I hope to achieve a better understanding of graphic design and what requirements and skills you must have in order to be successful. “After spending more time gazing at magazine stands than studying through school, Leisa knew that she wanted to one day create mag covers of her own. She spent her early 20s working her way through the art department and at age 26; she reached her ultimate goal and became art director of Cosmopolitan. She loves what she does and says that working with the most inspiring, funny and gorgeous women makes her day job even sweeter.” http://www.cosmopolitan.com.au/community/cosmo-team/leisa-maait/
Me: What would be the best advice you could give me? Leisa: The best advice I could give you would probably be to stay focused and passionate about what you want to do. When I first started my graphic design course at Shillington, I wasn’t prepared for anything they put me through. I honestly thought I wouldn’t be able to finish the course, but I stuck to it, and that’s the most important thing. 3 months is a short time to learn a lot of content, but I was eager to start my career. Never give up on what you want to do, especially if you want to turn it into a career. I love what I do Me: Did the course you study contribute to your success today? Leisa: Yes, without the course I studied I wouldn’t be the creative arts director of cosmopolitan magazine today. The teachers were so helpful and always made sure they made time for every student. Me: When you applied for college, what was your portfolio and sample work like? Leisa: Just like anyone else would, I struggled with what to put in my portfolio. I used InDesign to desktop publish my folio. I included artworks, photography (Photoshop) typography and fashion design. All up I think I had 7 work samples. By the end of my course I Shillington I had a professional portfolio to include in my resume and was guaranteed a job in the industry.

The following is a survey conducted to find out if the is a general need for the creation of this project (magazine.) I have surveyed a number of potential target consumers, which include young females between the ages of 16-30. Q. Would you be interested in buying a magazine that is made up of art, fashion and design?
The results above, demonstrate how many people (out of 20) said they would be interested in buying my magazine (16) and how many people weren’t interested (4). The graph and results from the survey I conducted were helpful to me and my research, as I discovered how many people from my target audience were interested in the magazine I would design and create. The 4 people that weren’t interested explained to me that they didn’t like fashion magazines. Instead however they liked music. From this information, I have decided to incorporate a little bit of everything, including music, to appeal to more consumers. Perhaps I can link music and fashion together, exploring the relationship between the fashion industry and the influences they have had on the music industry or certain artists in genres such as hip hop or pop. Photographs taken from my local newsagent store, showing the lack of creative arts magazines for sale on the market.
- 11 -
The second piece of research demonstrated the array
of magazines
already available in stores. From the image to the left, it is clear that a lot of newsagencies and supermarkets sell an array of fashion, gossip and celebrity magazines. While there is little evidence of creative arts magazines, a customer would have to go to a specific store that sells them. This clearly tells me that there is a genuine need to create more magazines like this, to suit the consumer’s needs.
Out of the 20 people I interviewed, 16 of them said they would like to see more magazines like this And less like this.
An observation I have made is that many of these magazines are based on a grey background, with minimal colours. This is the sort of simplistic style that will influence my design. - 12 -
What I need to do to bring this project to reality:
Design and create at least two different major projects in order to showcase and document a portfolio to gain entry into a design college, particularly Billy Blue College of Design. As a design student, use a variety of different artistic and design skills in order to demonstrate my ability as a designer. As an aspiring graphics designer (communication designer), use a variety of different communication skills in order to display projects and speak to the college administrators and in the future, the target audience.
In order for this project to be successful and worthwhile I need to explore and research the different qualifications a graphic designer needs. I also need to know how to make a magazine of my own. I need to familiarise myself with desktop publishing and do a lot of my own artwork to include in my magazine. Finally, in order to complete my project and magazine I need to create both some form of advertisement (for promotion) and gift to give away with every purchase of the magazine.
Thus, a need exists, not only for me, but anybody wishing to apply to Billy Blue, to develop a portfolio of work to demonstrate my ability and eligibility to enter the college. This problem will be explored in this next section to demonstrate that achieving this goal is a design project in itself. With the completion of this major design portfolio and project, there are a range of different opportunities that can arise. This is especially beneficial to me as an aspiring graphic designer.
- 13 -
Other opportunities that will arise from this major design project, and will benefit me once I graduate include the following: -The portfolio I generate by the end of this project can be used to attract potential clients in the future. It can also be used as a point of sale tool. The portfolio is a way to show potential employers or clients the quality of my work, level of expertise, and to establish credibility. In the advertising and graphic design industry, it is absolutely essential that the designer has a portfolio to display. -Furthermore, I can continue to build up this portfolio post HSC to always be a tool that can be used to showcase my ability. -Potential employers or clients can use examples of my work to help determine whether they want to hire me. A designer should be careful in choosing their work to display and present, as this can affect whether or not you get the job. -By the end of this project I will have gained some experience and skills in specific software programs, print design and digital file production. Ultimately all of this skill development can be included into my rĂŠsumĂŠ. Once I have completed my design portfolio I can consider it as a graphical resume http://desktoppub.about.com/cs/freelance/a/portfolio.htm

Description
Relation to need
The function of this project is to develop an outstanding portfolio and final design solution to use in the design industry and essentially use as an entry into Billy Blue college of design. The prototypes function in this case is to successfully advertise the magazine (free with every purchase)
Ultimately I need to have a completed portfolio and product by the end of this project. This is important to the project’s success because it will initially determine whether the product is efficient and appealing to the administrators of a design college. The magazine must be finished in order for me to submit my entry as an example of my design work. The project will need to Aesthetics are be aesthetically quintessential in relation appealing in order to sell to the need. They are to the targeted audience vital in the determination and of course be of a successful project. If successful in entering a a project is not college. It needs to aesthetically appealing it resonate with the will decrease its value, administrators and satisfy amongst the niche their needs, showing market or administrators them I am capable of in this case. graphic design. The materials and technologies used in this project will range from computer generated programs and skills (graphic design, adobe Photoshop) to printing and publishing materials (paper, ink )to workshop materials (steel, metal and other tools)
Materials will contribute to the fulfilment of the design need. These days it is more common to read magazines in digital format, rather than hard copies. Thus I must cater for both digital formats and hard copies, in order to obtain a large number of impressed readers. This will then allow them to read the magazine however they prefer.
Action I will need to undertake research in order to determine what a successful portfolio is made up of, and also develop an understanding of marketing strategies
In order to fulfil the need to be aesthetically appealing, I will conduct surveys to find out the opinions of others, especially the consumer market and targeted audience (female), which will help guide the articles and stories of interest within the project. I will also need to determine what will be visually appealing to my niche market. This will also be done through various surveys. I will need to do research on how other products like mine are made and designed so that I can successfully create my project to the best of my ability. Considering I must cater for a digital format and hardcopy, I must explore the different ways in which people can access my magazine. My first thought was to upload it to a digital magazine website (ISSUU), this way the readers can open the magazine in any device; iPads, laptops, smart phones,
- 15 -
tablets etc.
Environment
In developing a magazine for my MDP, I will have to consider the impact it will have on the environment when it is printed. It could harmfully impact the environment by utilising paper for printing, especially if it goes into mass production. However if it is also sold digitally, this will reduce the effect it will have on our natural environment.
Personal In order to finish with a interest successful project, it will
be worthwhile to include a lot of fashion art and design (my personal interests) into my magazine as this will allow me to generate a project to the best of my ability
I need to be aware of the impact my magazine will have on the environment because it is important for designers to appeal to the consumer market and ultimately a design college, in this case. Therefore if my product is environmentally friendly it will be more desirable and will give colleges an opportunity to develop a positive impression of my work. I consider sustainability to be significant throughout a project because my attitude towards the environment will impact who reads my magazine and the design colleges I apply to (Billy Blue) I need to base my project and submission into Billy Blue around my personal interests so that I am doing something I love and something I find enjoyable. This will allow me to work well. Therefore for my project I need to incorporate my personal interest. This will also show college administrators that I have a fine eye for art and design, making me suitable and eligible for a position in a design college
I will research different types of paper to print my magazine on. Something that is both appealing and environmentally friendly. As well as this I will look for alternatives to having printed hard copies of my magazine, which will include digital copies in this way, there is no paper or printing involved; which has a positive impact on the environment, our trees and lakes or rivers that would have otherwise been polluted by inks and dyes.
Gather various images, ideas, concepts and inspiration from existing sources that address art, fashion and design.

Entertai nment
Awarene ss
The underlying function and purpose of magazines is to entertain. Although I am creating a magazine to submit to a college, I would also like it to entertain the administrators. If my magazine serves it purpose to be submitted to a college, then it will also make the readers aware of my abilities, as well as other people abilities and talents that I will include as part of my magazine
To create a good impression on college administrators I will need to include aspects that are both creative and entertaining. I need this magazine to be an example of the work I can create. This relates to my need because, I must include general aspects of magazines (awareness) to make it appealing, successful and worth reading.
My magazine will need to be filled with creative images, photographs, interesting articles and many other things that will make the reader want to keep reading. This will ensure that the reader is entertained. When I am creating the different articles in my magazine I will be sure to evaluate them every so often to make sure that they remain within the brackets of being both entertaining and informative. My overall goal is to bring awareness to the community and recognition for many young talented people. Hopefully the colleges will also appreciate this.
The environment is a growing problem in our world and really needs to be looked at. We, as a global nation, cannot continue to cut down trees in discriminatively without considering the damage that we are doing. In this case, alternative methods of supplying the finished magazine to its subscription readers must be considered that is low cost, high quality and environmentally friendly. By displaying this form of ethics, it would appeal to the hard core environmentalist while still being an attractive proposition for people with little concern for the environment. While the environmental intent of the project is present, and while it could be used as a point of sale tool, it is a personal ethical standard that is being met here as it is the right thing to do to maintain the world that we live in. From what I have stated in the above table I have decided that want to create a product that is aesthetically appealing as well as minimal damage caused to the environment. Therefore after doing research I have decided to create my product in a way that will have the least impact on the environment.

Method of assessment
In order to design and create a good portfolio as well as successful products it must function to the best of its ability and fulfil the design brief.
If my product fulfils the needs of the consumer it is therefore successfully designed and created. Develop an understanding of how similar products are developed and function. To assess the success of the magazines function I will ask my cousin (Leisa Maait) who is a professional designer in the magazine industry, and has been through the process of applying to design colleges, to review my magazine. This will then let me know if it is oh a high standard and ready for submission. Survey people/ intended users on prototype idea and current designs to determine whether they think it is aesthetically pleasing or not. If 80% or more people agree on the fact that my magazine is aesthetically appealing then I will know that I have fulfilled the design need. Make changes to the design if needed. (If statistics are under 80%)
My magazine, jewellery and advertisement must be aesthetically appealing and appropriate to the consumer market as well as college administrators, who are the intended users for my project. The quality of my graphic designing skills in the magazine is what will determine how successful it is when I come to use it after HSC. The materials and resources I use must be new and innovative
I believe expanding my magazine, perhaps digitally will allow me to fulfil the design need for Billy Blue. The magazine can then be read using different materials. I will work out how many people prefer digital formats or hard copies. Make a magazine using materials Collect samples of different environmentally that do not have great impact on friendly materials and see which works best the environment. Know where with my design. In doing this I will be fulfilling your items come from and how the design need; to impress college they are harvested. Personal interest
Entertainment
Awareness
Incorporate my interest of art and graphics in my design to ensure the best possible outcome. Ensure that it is beautiful and appealing
Create a magazine that incorporates fashion, design and art that is appealing and incorporate a range of different technologies Consider time management and create my product to the best of my ability.
My project (magazine) is supposed to entertain the reader. For a successful final outcome I need to make sure it does this
In order to determine whether it is entertaining for the reader and target audience I will conduct surveys. These surveys will help me determine whether my project is successful or not.
Another function of my magazine is to make people aware of the different art, design and fashion that our world has to offer.
Similarly, I will have to conduct surveys to the target audience to clarify whether my magazine will offer the reader awareness of all things creative. The brief requires me to make a good impression and summation of my skills, for further opportunities in the future, including job opportunities.
To complete my product to the best of my ability, I have considered what I have stated in the above table; assessment criteria, and I am going to carry out the method of assessment so that I know my product will be successful. Each design factor is very significant to my project especially function, aesthetics and materials. So long as my project is appropriate and fulfils my design need then I will have a great chance of entering Billy Blue. And to do this I must satisfy each of the above design factors
- 19 -
The following is a life cycle analysis of the steps that will need to be taken to bring the design solution to life.
- 20 -
1. Establishing the need One of the most important steps in a design process is establishing the need. Without a need to a project, the final solution will be insignificant and irrelevant. At this stage, as a designer the need is the first step to a design process. 2. Mind map of potential ideas This mind map helps me to brainstorm all the different/possible ideas I can pursue for my design project. Within the mind maps, I have included rough sketches of ideas. I will then evaluate the mind map in order to help me pick three ideas for my design project. 3. Research relevance to need Researching the relevance to the need is a step that includes both primary and secondary research. To gain better knowledge and justification of doing this project both forms of research will be undertaken. For primary research I will interview and survey people that are in the design industry or have experience. For the secondary research I will find helpful websites that inform me of all of the different processes or design situations I can be faced with whilst developing my project. 4. Final Drawings My final drawings will include some magazine layout ideas and design concepts for the pendant I will be making as part of my magazine promotion as well as an advertisement campaign design. The drawings will be annotated so the idea is clearly identifiable. Most of my remaining design concepts will be computer generated. 5. Experiments Experiments help determine whether my materials, tools and techniques will work or be useful to helping me solve the problem to my design need. From each experiment conducted I will evaluate whether it was successful. If not, then more experiments will be conducted until my desired outcome is achieved. 6. Promotion The promotion of my project (magazine) will help appeal to the audience it’s targeted towards and ultimately show the college that I am proactive in all aspects of design and marketing. Promotion is an important aspect of magazines because it attracts a larger audience. The two promotion ideas I have include, a small bus shelter advertisement and a metal pendant (charm bracelet.) The advertisement will be created from an artistic display with Perspex and maybe a light box system. The pendant will be in the form of a charm, with my logo design and brand name engraved on it. Other possible ideas include free give aways such as tote bags with art prints, Iphone cases or T-shirts. 7. Prototype For my project, I will be making a prototype of the metal pendant. In order to do this I will use the program Rhino, to computer generate my design and have it printed using the 3D printing CAD machine.
- 21 -
8. Finance plan A finance plan will be generated in order for me to plan how much I need to spend on my project. I will also establish my budget and available money to spend on the project. 9. Magazine (Practical) To create my magazine, I will need to use a program/ desktop publisher to create my layout. I will also explore layouts and typography. In the process of my magazine, I will have to decide how I’m going to print and publish it. 10. Pendant The pendant is a form of promotion and advertising that will be used as a free giveaway with every purchase of my magazine. 11. Developing solution The final solution will be able to fulfil the need of my major design project. The solution will consist of a magazine, pendant and advertisement. 12. Ongoing & final evaluation Throughout my MDP I will write ongoing evaluations to constantly refer to. The life cycle analysis above was helpful for mapping out exactly what I need to do along the course of this project, and in exactly what order I need to do it. In order for all of this work to really happen, I must make sure that I continually refer back to this life cycle analysis to make my project come to life. I need to follow the steps, as they are an outline of how to develop my project and portfolio. If I am to successfully complete this task I need to overcome some major problems that can potentially act as a barrier. Some of the problems include, time management (which I need to work on), transportation (materials and large scale projects), obtaining the correct materials and methods of carrying out my project, e.g. Finding a publishing and printing company to print my magazine. All of these are potential obstacles to achieving a successful project. However, in following this life cycle analysis I will be prepared for almost anything I am faced with. Furthermore if I lose, or run out of time, I will have to sacrifice some small steps within the development of this project in order to have a final solution on time. - 22 -

Evaluation: The above time management plan is an appropriate form of assessment as it accurately indicates the time required for the project to be completed to the best of my abilities. It also describes the different stages of project management so that the viewer can get a clear understanding of how I managed and planned the project. By this point it is clear to me that I need to carefully plan my time and make sure I get certain aspects of the project done by a specific time. In this case I have to make sure my solution to the design need is finalised before HSC trials.

Benefits/Hindrance to development
T4W6 Finish up to and including project management
During week 6 my goal was to complete project management. However I only got around to finishing the project proposal, and started working on my time and action plan (journal)
This has already proved to be a hindrance to the development of my project as I am already behind, and should be up completed the project management. From this point onwards I need to manage my time more efficiently.
T4 W7
Complete a time and finance plan
I commenced my time and action plan with my teacher. However, I have not yet completed it
I have already proven to myself that if I don’t keep up with the work I will fall behind. In relation to the development I need to get more organised if I want to finish my project. Therefore in order to catch up I will, set aside a day, where I will complete this task in at least 2 hours.
T4 W8
Begin with project development and realisation
Whilst I’m still working on my time and action plan, I have done my best to commence the project development and realisation. I have created a page of existing ideas to get a better understanding of what’s already out there
During this week, I found the work I had done, had contributed greatly to the development of my project. In completing a mind map of existing ideas, I got a clearer Idea of what I want my project to be.
T4 W9
Exploration of existing ideas and degree of difference
Design inspiration and degree of difference
Unaware of this, I had actually worked slightly ahead of myself, by completing the exploration of existing ideas the week before. This was beneficial for me because it was one less thing to worry about
This week I did commence my idea generation; my favourite part of the folio.
I believe the idea generation section of the portfolio is one of the most important to the projects development and success. Once I have established what kind of project I want to do, it becomes much easier to complete the portfolio.

Xmas Continue with idea In the Christmas holidays, I didn’t spend much time working on my Holid generation portfolio. However, I completed ay two different drawings/sketches. 1. Pendant design 2. Bus shelter advertisement
I’m disappointed with myself that I didn’t spend more time on the development of my portfolio, considering I had six weeks. However, Christmas was very bus, and my family went away for the holidays. Otherwise I could have been more organised with my portfolio, and wouldn’t have to worry about doing it last minute.
Start on T1W1 rough/concept sketches
I had already previously started some sketches in the Christmas holidays, so I didn’t have to do much more this week
This benefited me because I had more time to focus on my other subjects, as well as complete parts of the portfolio that I had left unfinished (such as the degree if difference)
Reflect on design factors relevant to MDP and research materials, tools and techniques Application of conclusions (drawings, materials) Develop on portfolios communication and presentation techniques. Commence practical Make a start on prototyping and magazine design
This week I was surprised that I had actually completed my predicted activity. I researched materials, tools and techniques I need for my project
The benefit of having information and research on different materials, tools and techniques is to have a better understanding of what will be the best to use,
I haven’t yet finished my drawings, but I do have a clear list of all the materials I need to use. From this point onwards, most of the portfolios major development has been completed. This week I worked on the layout and design of my portfolio
It would be more beneficial if I had my final drawings by this point. However I have only found time to create a list of materials needed. This Is extremely beneficial and important for the development of my portfolio as it will show the marker that I have skills in communication design and presentation.
I started developing my prototype with the program ‘Rhino’. So far I have the basic outline of the metal pendant I want to make. Ultimately I will design it on rhino and print it 3D to get an idea of the final outcome
There are many benefits of having a prototype. One of these benefits is giving him designer a better idea of what the final outcome of the product will be. I will be able to see how the design will turn out I have a prototype
Collect materials for advertisement and finish rhino drawing of pendant to be printed Purchase a metal pendant, that will allow me to engrave my brand and logo
I haven’t yet started to collect materials for the advertisement, however I do know where I can get Perspex and already have access to LED lights (as my dad is an electrician ) My teacher has put in the order for the pendant, it should arrive within the next week
If I don’t start organising my materials for my advertisement I might fall behind and run out of time. I need to keep up. Thus I will make a list of the things I must catch up on

All evaluations are up to date, from what I’ve done so far.
Is will save me time towards the end of the project and portfolio as I won’t have to waste time filling in blank evaluations
During times like these exam blocks, it is a major setback for my project because I am so occupied with other subjects. Lots of time was lost, so in order to regain it I must dedicate at least two weeks of solid catch up work, for the weeks I lost during exam block I did not spend any time on my This meant that I ad to spend more time DT major work after school hours in the workshop working on my projects. During these holidays I spent a lot Through this I am actively exploring and of time, creating different artworks demonstrating my creative side. I Am not as close to finishing my magazine design as I would hope to be.
This is a setback; however I am looking for more inspiration daily, to help me speed up the process of designing layouts. With all of this inspiration can come up with my own ideas and complete more aspects of my magazine I haven’t had enough time by this stage to This set back now makes finalise my magazine and completely edit it. my magazine seem Therefore it is not ready for publishing. Submit final project
Time is starting to run out; therefore I have to stay back at school in the workshop. I don’t want to lose any more time and put my project in jeopardy, so from here on I really sped things up
Dedicating my time to working on my portfolio.
Dedicating one week to editing and adding on to my portfolio was extremely helpful because any changes that needed to be made since I had it last marked and had feedback from my teacher, could now be made. Also any change in direction for my project could now be modified in the appropriate areas of my folio. At the beginning of the week I Coming closer and closer to the due date I was still finalising my pendant, was happy that I had nearly all aspects of and editing my portfolio. By my project organised. This was beneficial to Tuesday of week 6 my portfolio me because this means that appropriately was finished and I was waiting managed my time, even after having fallen on my magazine to arrive, behind in the previous weeks. while I had my advertisement and pendants.
This time and action plan is a highly appropriate form of assessment and crucial during the process of project development and evaluation as it clearly states what you are supposed to have done and what you actually did. It is helpfully critical to the designer be it makes it clear on what you haven’t done. It is also a good form of personal reflection, and keeping up to where you are in the project. Next time, in another project I will know what I need to improve on and what aspects of the design process take up more time than others. In this way I’ll be ahead of myself and be able to start everything when I’m supposed to. Being organised is very important during this design process. - 27 -

Through my record of expenditure it is evident that I didn’t go over my budget, which was ultimately $200. Overall I spent $107.04. In fact I didn’t spend a large amount of money on my project altogether. I am happy with the amount of money I spent on the necessary materials I needed. However I did spend $5.00 more than I expected on the Perspex. The major turning point in my project may be when I evaluate the quality of my magazine as a company called “Peecho” is publishing it for me. Seeing as I didn’t go over budget, there is nothing I will change or do differently if I was to do this again.

Evidence of creativity Evaluation of mind map: The following mind maps were a brainstorm of what I could potentially do for this project. I had to consider many things like the design need, and the factors of design such as function, aesthetics, quality and environment. The “design ideas mind map shows where I generated the idea of creating a magazine. This was the initial step I had to take. From this it was clear that there were many other options available to me; however I felt the best solution to my problem, in entering a design school, would be to create a magazine. These various mind maps were useful in helping me develop a broader idea of a product that will fulfil my design need
- 30 -
Positive This magazine design is extremely appealing to me because of its simplicity. I also admire how the front cover includes an artwork of a wolf instead of a photograph. The title of the magazine is similar to mine (Lone wolf). I like the font of the title, because it is large, clear and easy to read. It also contrasts nicely against the blue background.
Minus Judging from the front cover, potential consumers may not know what is contained with this magazine or what it’s about because I t doesn’t include any information or simple blurb.
Positive

Bus shelter advertisements are a good form of advertisement because they are large and clear in what they advertise. A lot of young people rely on public transport to get around. Therefore this advertisement will appeal to my target audience. Furthermore bus you can find a bus shelter almost anywhere you go
Some advertisements can be unclear and therefore not get their message across to the audience. Bus shelter advertisements are often exposed to graffiti and vandalism.
Positive
Minus
This simple product for a brand (D&G) is effective in promoting the company, as its sophisticated design displays the name of the brand in a creative way. The designers have taken something as simple as a dog tag (used in military) and created into a fashion piece.
The chain appears slightly small for the size of the pendant. It may appear a little bit crowded with letters, this can make it confusing

Existing promotional ideas “Dolce & Gabbana”
Examples of the genre/type of magazine I’m looking at creating. These magazines follow the ideology that “less is more’
Artistic magazine
Examples of art (paint on Perspex) I admire the allusion it gives of an image floating, as the Perspex is transparent. I believe this sort of advertising will grab the audience’s attention
- 32 -
In this section I have shown how my idea is new and different from products that already exist in the market place. I have also annotated the differences to show how my designs are innovative, creative and different from anything else available. Relating this back to my project constraints to show how I am answering the project’s design factors.
Different chain
Brand name Similarities One similarity between my design and the Chanel ‘dog tag’ is that they are the same shape. They also both include an image of the brand logo, to represent the brand itself. Both pendants are silver and contain a small hole in the top centre of the tag. From this degree of difference analysis I have come to realise that there are a lot of products already in the consumer market that are very similar to my designs. This is why the final product (function, quality and aesthetics) are extremely important to allow my product to stand out
Differences My dog tag design is different compared to the design above because my design has a different chain, compared to Chanel’s. Also my dog tag includes the name of my brand, whereas the other one only includes a logo. Chanel’s dog tag has a specific chequered pattern in the background. However, I believe it is more effective when the design is plain, so it draws the audience’s attention to the logo and brand rather than the background - 33 -
The following is another degree of difference I conducted to point out the similarities and differences between this existing magazine cover, and a sample magazine cover I have created for my project.
Similarities Both covers are created with the grey background. They are very simplistic, and don’t have too much writing or confusing words.
Differences The salient images are different in composure. My photograph is quite eye catching, where as the other magazine, featuring Lorde, is more simple.
Influences From looking at this magazine cover, it inspired me to use grey as a background colour. Either black or white would be too contrasting, whereas the grey colour is just perfect. The simple title also influence me to create a heading that was simple and straight forward.
The advertisements featured in my magazine are all representations of things I am interested in. Each advertisement is significant to me. For example I included an advertisement for Billy Blue College of design, to show that I am highly interested in it and to prove I have substantial advertising skills. All of these advertisements can be seen as examples of ads that I create and can be used in the future. Hopefully, one day I will be using my graphic design skills to advertise and campaign different products.
This advertisement is personal and unique because I drew it and photo shopped jewellery onto it - 34 -
As evident through my “Princess Polly” advertisement (an online shop I buy my clothes from), I make my advertisements with programs, and edit existing pictures to make them my own. Here I used a “subtract” overlay to give the three dimensional effect. This is the difference between my advertisements, and other magazine advertisements you see in fashion magazines. Most other art or design magazines do not include clothing apparel advertisements.
- 35 -
The difference between articles in my magazine and articles in any other fashion magazine is that my articles are based on a more personal basis. The articles or interviews with people I know are aimed at promoting their talent to all the readers. From this, hopefully they will gain the recognition they deserve for their efforts and talents. Whereas other magazine articles mostly focus on celebrity styles or the latest gossip.
Examples of fonts used in my magazine
Examples of magazine Fonts (Titles) The difference between the fonts I have used in my magazine (as evident above) and the fonts used in “high fashion magazines is that they are much more diverse and unique. Which is initially what sim trying to promote in my magazine (uniqueness and individuality)the fonts I have used are quirky and eye catching, whilst the fonts, above one the right, are very generic and simple. They all in fact feature thick and thin variations in the font. I prefer to use a variety of different styles and themes of fonts in my magazine to make it more interesting. - 36 -
The following is a comparison between an existing bus shelter advertisement and my design. I developed my sketch of the bus shelter from this image. However, my design of the advertisement is different compared to this existing advertisement.
Differences: My advertisement is designed to look like a large version of a magazine cover. I thought this would be an effective method of advertising since I’m selling a magazine. The other design however is also effective and different to mine because it mimics the image of the city in the background. At first I thought the advertisement was transparent.
Similarities Both advertisements are clear in what their advertising; including a small blurb of information. Both include effective graphics, to draw in the viewer’s attention.
Influences: the existing design of the bus shelter advertisement influenced me and my design in a number of ways. As mentioned earlier, I thought the above design was transparent, as you can see in the picture, the street continues through the poster. However, this is not the case. Because of this I generated the idea of making my advertisement transparent. I have decided to do this because I think it looks original and unique. Furthermore it won’t look like any other advertisement you would normally see. I am also hoping to attach an LED light box, to illuminate and light up my advertisement. The end product should be really effective through the glow and transparency of Perspex.
Weaknesses: One weakness with this design is that it is not clear in stating what OCAD stands for. Therefore if someone was to walk by and take a look at it, they wouldn’t understand it. This ultimately defeats the purpose of the advertisement - 37 -
This word cloud I have created using the website ‘WORDLE’ has allowed me to type up all of the different aspects and elements that are required of designers. Using wordle is useful when you have a lot of different words and terms that come to mind as you can just enter them in, resulting in a presentable word cloud of ideas. I think this word cloud is a successful method to use to measure creativity because it’s easy to compose and captures the audience’s attention. It can also be seen as an alternative method to creating mind maps.
Original fly pages, following front cover - 38 -
Here are some sample pages of my magazine, which I believe best demonstrate both my theme/layout and progress so far
- 39 -
The following artworks are some examples of the body of work I have created to include in my magazine. With the inclusion of my own artwork, it adds a degree of personality and creativity to my project, which is essential for Billy Blue to appreciate. The following body of work was drawn with Derwent artist pencils, and inspired by the relationship between humans and animals.
- 40 -
Function While generating ideas for my product, function was one of the factors of design that heavily influenced it. The reason for this is because it was important to make sure that the function of my product is successful and appropriate to solve the problem at hand. As a designer my problem that needed solving was to design and create 3 pieces of work that would fit together (magazine, promotion and advertisement) to showcase as an example of the work I can produce. Considering what I have designed for my pendant and bus shelter advertisement, I think it functions exceptionally well because in my view it ticks all the boxes. In order for my product to function successfully it must: Be appealing Unique in design Different form what’s already in the market Portrays and represents me as a designer Appeal to the consumer market In relation to my magazine, there are a lot of different functions that a magazine must fulfil. According to extensive research magazines are designed and created to:
communicate to society advertise products entertain educate relate and connect to its audience Important source of information in day to day life. Captivate the reader Magazines can play a very vital role in establishment and development of a society. Considering there are many types of magazines, there will always be one to suit each individual. Most magazines contain articles, news and some other fun stuff. They are especially good to read if one wants to avoid boredom, perhaps in a waiting room, or travelling on public transport. Therefore the function of any magazine can vary depending on what its main purpose is. My magazine will need to fill each function (as stated above) that is associated with fashion, art and design magazines. Furthermore, research shows that magazines have the longest life span in all the media, so they are especially useful for product advertising. Every function it serves has an influencing effect on society, the consumer and reader. It is important to fulfil these functions to create a successful magazine.
Photographed by
What is needed for a good Billy Blue portfolio? For a good submission, I will need to show extensive desktop publishing skills, graphic design skills (layout, fonts, typography, and colour scheme) and a high quality sample of work (magazine). This will give administrators an insight into my work.
- 41 -
Aesthetics Aesthetics is one of the most important design factors to me because I’m really concerned with the overall appeal and design of anything that I create. Considering I want to be a graphics designer when I leave school, I think this is the main reason why I have become so infatuated in the overall beauty of my products and designs. I really strive to appeal to the consumer market as well as satisfy myself. However the consumer always comes first, in order to satisfy their needs I believe I must make my products as aesthetically pleasing as possible. Looking at existing magazines and advertisement designs that appeal to me, really gives me better ideas as to what might appeal to other people. Surveys that I have conducted have also really benefitted me in the design of my all three of my products. A small survey was conducted to determine how many people within my target audience would be interested in buying my finished magazine. 16 out of 20 said yes, while four said no. Additionally I showed them a sample of the magazine cover, and got helpful feedback as to what looked aesthetically appealing and what didn’t. The aesthetics of any magazine is extremely important. Research has proven that aesthetically appealing magazines sell more than those which are poorly designed and communicated. The magazines ultimate aesthetical purpose is to:
Make an impression on the reader Leave a lasting memory If the magazine is not attractive, It doesn’t draw your attention and therefore doesn’t sell Get in touch with the consumers human senses (sight, touch even smell) Interest consumers into looking and reading articles A Matte finish, gives the magazine a quirky retro look Fashion regresses and fades. Taking a look into fashion of the past is an intriguing thought To be Quirky and against the norm. Also commonly referred to as “Indie” a short term meaning individual. Magazines like mine differ from existing high fashion magazines such as vogue. A vogue magazine would never publish a magazine with a matte finish. Gloss is considered more high class. Vogue is also always looking into the fashion of the future They appeal to the eccentric public
- 42 -
I conducted a survey to explore the different opinions of people within my target audience. After showing potential consumers some samples of a magazine design cover, I asked them their opinion and graphed the results The survey results are beneficial for me as I can take a look at what appeals to my potential consumers, and therefore create something that suits their needs. The most popular and favourable design appeared to be design no. 2. A lot of people admired it over the others because it includes an image of my own hand drawing. They also admired the way it blended with the background, unlike design no.1 The other favoured design was design no. 3. People said it was interesting and different to include my face on the cover. Similarly like design no.2 the image fits well with the background, and is the perfect size for a magazine cover. However based on opinion, I have decided to change the font of design no.2 as it’s not as effective as the other designs.
- 43 -
Environmental Concerns (paper) The environment is one of my biggest concerns when I am creating any product as I want to make sure that the materials I use aren’t causing a great deal of damage or negative harm to our natural environment. I also want to make sure that the harvesting of the material will also not cause any damage to the environment. However, I am aiming to use materials (paper) that are environmentally friendly. In doing this, I will hopefully appeal and impress to Billy Blue administrators as I am addressing environmental issues and showing my awareness by using environmentally friendly paper. From research done through http://www.paperonline.org/environment I found out the life cycle of paper.
According to “Papers Online” Paper is a sustainable product:
it is made from a renewable and increasing forest resource; it is biodegradable and can be recycled; and It is a source of renewable energy at the end of its life.
Concerns about paper and the environment also include its manufacturing process. Although, through the use of new technology and advances, produces have made sure it is manufactured in a sustainable manner.
“Product-side innovation has allowed papermakers to reduce the quantity of raw material used while maintaining or even increasing the paper produced and its performance” Regarding recycling paper, only certain papers can be put through the process of recycling. It is confirmed that magazine paper is one of the types that is 100% recyclable. - 44 -
Paper also uses a large amount of electricity in the process of manufacturing it as well as the printing process. This is why I have considered with digital publishing. This alternative will reduce the impact that the published version of my magazine will have on the environment.
“GREEN PAPER” Will Green paper give the same quality as any other normal paper? Research shows that environmentally friendly paper is almost identical to any other normal paper. The obvious differences however, include the fact that it is recyclable and has a slightly different texture. In fact “green paper” is sourced from alternative fibres, such as hemp, kenaf, bagasse, wheat straw and rice straw. Although it is produced through these alternative materials, the paper produced is still good quality and highly durable. Environmentally friendly paper uses less pulp and minimal papermaking emissions. Which is one of the main environmentally damaging aspects of paper production. Furthermore it does not use chlorine bleaching. This type of paper is sourced from ecologically managed plantations such as eucalypt or pine. Therefore, environmentally friendly paper is proved to be just as good as normal paper, if not even better, as it is not harmful to the environment. And the quality is durable and sustainable. With these recent discoveries, I have learnt a lot about paper and the damage it can cause to our environment. Thus, in consideration of the environmental factor of design, I will you sustainable paper.
A picture of a paper production factory
- 45 -
Quality The quality of my magazine is a factor of design that I will consider during the design process, to ensure that the final product demonstrates the best of my ability (in all factors of design; function and aesthetics.) To ensure a good quality magazine I will have to use quality printing paper as well as a good publishing company.
A silk matt finish paper is what I wish to use to print my magazine. A smooth, nonreflecting finish should be of high quality, and consequently make the whole magazine a quality product.
- 46 -
Durability A durable product is one that will appeal to more consumers because they know they will spend their money on a product that is worthwhile and something that won’t, break or get ruined easily. This factor of design is important to my project because it will also determine its overall quality. If the paper used to print the magazine is of good quality, and not flimsy, than the overall product should last the consumer a long time. The front and back cover of the magazine should also be printed on thicker paper, to prevent the corners from bending or folding. Some research I conducted helped me to investigate what the oldest continuously published magazine in the world was: Květy. The magazine was first published in 1834. It’s celebrated its 175th anniversary next year. The magazine was famously known for serving as a major forum of „national revival “especially during the 19th century. “Today weekly magazine Květy is well-known for its unique family concept, safeguarded by Editor-in-Chief Pavel Traub. With an average sold circulation of 115,000 copies and the most impressive readership figures (488,000 readers per week) it still maintains its number one position in its segment.” The above extract explains why this magazine has been the oldest continuously published magazine since 1834. The magazines unique family concept, has kept it alive and well known in today’s society. My aim, with my magazine is to have it filled with something that will appear to a great array of consumers. Furthermore its content will be timeless and continuously relevant to society’s trends. The durability of my magazines quality and its content should allow further appreciation in respects to college administrators.
- 47 -
Cost The cost of my project is something to consider as an important factor of design because it can contribute and determine the success of my project. While the magazine will be sold to make a profit, the pendant and advertisement will make no profit, however I still have to spend money on them in order for them to be successful. I’m on no tight budget, so I am willing to spend what it takes to make my project successful. Regarding the retail cost of the magazine, overall this will be determined once the final cost from the printing and publishing company is confirmed. From that point forward I will decide the price of my magazine, and make sure I will make a profitable amount from it. At the moment I am looking around $7.00 To verify my decision making about the cost of magazines, I did a survey, and asked 55 people to tick a box, indicating their ideal price, and what their willing to spend on a magazine. I graphed the results in a table below. Evidently the most ideal cost was $8.00. This is fairly close to what I had predicted my magazine will cost. The least I deal cost was $13.00. From this survey I can now see what would be an ideal price to sell a magazine.

It is believed that digital magazines correlate to destruction of forests, as they do not use any paper. Since it does not use paper, it saves a large amount of waste that could go in landfills. “In 1993, the… [Environmental Protection Agency] …estimated that 30-40% of US landfill volume is taken up by paper.” In using digital publishing this percentage will decline dramatically.
I think it is worthwhile, to provide readers with the option of reading a published version of my magazine or digital/online version. Readers also have the option to order a print online. All of this will be done in the efforts to reduce both the environmental harm that is caused through paper, and also the amount of electricity and energy that is needed to generate certain devices and store the magazine online.
In order to allow readers to read the magazine online, my magazine will be branded with a QR code. This will allow the reader to scan their purchased issue of the magazine and read it online, wherever they go. This QR code is another technology which I will be using to gain greater audience approval. This fulfils the design need and Billy Blue requirements, as they expect candidates and their students to prove that they can use new and innovative technology. Especially if it is a technology that is becoming more common and frequently used, in popular culture. The magazine will also come with an engraved metal copy of the QR code, as a promotional advertising campaign. This can furthermore be attached to the bracelet. - 49 -
Component LAYOUT: Experimenting with different magazine cover designs, one of the most important aspects of a magazine, as it grabs the reader’s attention
Materials Microsoft word and Adobe Photo shop CS6.
Tools
Techniques Simply playing around with different images and layouts for my magazine. Compared to my final design I have settled on a different picture, decided to make it black and white and used a different font. The title is also position slightly to the left rather than in the top centre.
Testing images:
The above screenshot is evidence of experimentation with different headings/fonts, sourced from Dafont.com. After some thought, I decided to choose the last font “joystick”. This is because I feel it best represents my magazine. It is simple yet effective which will grab the audience’s attention.
Additional format experimentation on a website called “Polyvore” - 50 -
In this section I had to experiment with the QR code pendant and use different materials, tools and techniques to ensure that it would work properly. I had a little trouble getting this organised and manufactured. I the beginning I created a QR code that linked directly to a draft copy of my magazine that I uploaded to Issuu. The problem with this was that had the wrong QR with the wrong link. After the code was drawn up in rhino, casted from wax into silver, I realised that this will not link to the final upload of my magazine. Once I had finalised my magazine which was on 8/8/14 I could then create a new QR code. The only problem that occurred here was that, I had ordered and printed my magazine on the 11/14 without changing the QR code on the front cover. There was now nothing I could do about this as my order had already been dispatched. Now that this had occurred the QR code I already had made into silver was now useless and only became useful to me as a prototype and something for me to experiment and work with. Therefore, while the other QR code pendant was in the making I experimented with my existing one. Now I had to enamel this pendant so that it would become readable form a device. This now becomes a prototype for me to experiment on.
What is Enamelling? Enamelling is the art of applying a vitreous material to an object, as decoration, to the surface of which it is made to adhere by heat. -Enamelartistic.com The enamelling process was successful as it was the process that initially allowed the device to read the QR code. Without the enamel the code wouldn’t be readable. The final picture below shows the enamel setting in, after it came out of the kiln.

MARKETING: In this section I am going to test whether a piece of Perspex is an appropriate material to create my bus shelter advertisement on.
Materials
Tools
For this experimentation I will need the following:
Techniques
To complete this experiment successfully I will need the following tools:
A piece of Perspex Paint Pencils
A spreading knife A cloth, newspaper An etching pen\ Paint brush Sponge brush
The technique I am using for this experiment is called etching. I will use a sharp etching tool that scratches into the Perspex. The reason I am doing this is because I found out through the advice of my teacher, that if I wanted to combine Perspex and light together, it would be a good idea to consider scratching into it, as every mark in the Perspex will become illuminated (and glow)

This experimentation was useful to determine the materials tools and techniques needed to create this project. Additional experiments will need to be carried out to test other materials. Overall I was happy with this experiment and surprised with the results. I love the look of the see through Perspex and the simple silhouette of the image.

Rough sketches of different shapes and forms of the pendant.
The following rough sketches show my initial ideas for the project I have carried out. Above are the initial designs of my brand pendant for my magazine. After all the experimentation with the different shapes I decided to go with the oval shaped pendant. To the right is an image of how I envisioned my bus shelter advertisement. However the final drawing will show that this design has become an edge lit sign. However the concept is still the same. - 54 -
I chose this sketch as my final design because I favoured this shape over the other shapes. It fit both my brand name and logo. I think it’s simple yet effective. This is the final annotated drawing for the design of my bus shelter advertisement. The add; will be in the form of an enlarged magazine cover. It will also be created on Perspex, with an LED light box so that it glows. All dimensions and measurements are annotated in the final drawing This final drawing of my magazine cover design shows the positioning of the title and the sub titles, as well as the QR code. It also depicts the photograph that I had chosen to put on the front cover, as I had many different choices.

Thus, a need exists, not only for me, but anybody wishing to apply to Billy Blue; to develop a portfolio of work to demonstrate my ability and eligibility to enter the college. Achieving this goal is a design project in itself. The Billy Blue entry requirements require students to provide examples of 6-10 pieces of their best work. This portfolio documents the process and developments of three products; two which derive from the project of creating a magazine. With this in mind, I will only have to create another 3 examples of work to fulfil the entry requirements. With the completion of this major design portfolio and project, there are a range of different opportunities that can arise. This is especially beneficial to me as an aspiring graphic designer. In my point of view this project is to initially display my skills in communication design as well as explore the different opportunities that this portfolio can offer me after its completion. Thinking icon: I have chosen to use this particular thinking icon because I have already established it as my company emblem, along with my brand logo of the wolf. The reason I have included it is because it shows the reader that I am making an informed decision. As well as this they will become more familiarised with my brand every time they see it. The idea behind the icon was the inclusion of a wolf, considering the name “LoneWolf”. Evidently there are three wolves, despite the name ‘Lone”. However there are 2 additional wolves in the shadow of the centred wolf to symbolise people following the Lone Wolf. My brand symbolises the individuality of people. However it also symbolises others who follow in the footsteps of any one individual, who sets trends in our modern society.

Magazine: My magazine will contain articles about unknown designers, artists and people in the fashion industry. It will also contain photographs, artworks other unique and original designs. The reason I have chosen to do this is to give these people who deserve more recognition for their work, an opportunity to appeal to people who don’t yet know about their incredible stories and talents in the industry of the arts and design. I also chose to do this because I am in the same position as many of these people; trying to sell my own artworks. However I need recognition of my artworks from the public in order to try and sell them to consumers. Therefore, from the creation of my magazine and the inclusion of various people in the creative arts and fashion industry, hopefully I will give them as well as myself an opportunity to get the recognition they deserve. Furthermore, I will be including advertisements, like any other magazine would have. In doing so I am presenting the skills I have in designing and advertisement of existing products in the market. I am hoping this will prove to be a good example of what I am capable of doing.
Issuu – online Publishing website I found Issuu when I was searching for a website that would allow me to digitally publish my magazine, so essentially it would be an online magazine.
“With over 15 million publications, Issuu is the fastest growing digital publishing platform in the world. Millions of avid readers come here every day to read the free publications created by enthusiastic publishers from all over the globe with topics in fashion, lifestyle, art, sports and global affairs to mention a few. And that's not all. We've also got a prominent range of independent publishers utilizing the Issuu network to reach new fans every day. Issuu has grown to become one of the biggest publishing networks in the industry. It's an archive, library and newsstand all gathered in one reading experience.” It is for the reasons above why I chose to publish my magazine online with Issuu. In the process of doing this I gained a lot of inspiration and ideas from independent publishers like myself. I also like the fact that the website allows the reader to read a magazine replicating the experience you would have, if it was a hard copy. Peecho – Printing and publishing services Peecho is the printing service that is offered to publishers who publish with Issuu. This service is also available to readers who wish to print/buy their own copy of an online magazine. I decided to print with Peecho because it was relatively cheap compared to other printing services. They also offer perfect binding in the form of a magazine. I chose to print with Peecho because of their high reputation with other using and outstanding quality of printing. - 58 -
Why Magazines? I chose to do a magazine, ultimately because it will help me improve my desktop publishing skills. Furthermore, I chose to create a magazine over a website or blog, which serves a similar purpose, because research shows that magazines are favoured among most women as a form of entertainment or spare time reading.
Why I chose Magazine advertising: Magazines are a good form of advertisement because amongst all the reading one does, the reader comes across an ad every few pages or so. Unknowingly, the reader automatically recognises the advertisement, even if they are unconscious of it. This is why advertising can be so effective. If someone was to come across a product on the shelf that they may have seen in a magazine advertisement they would unconsciously recognise it. Furthermore this will show Billy Blue that I have knowledge of advertising and campaigning and give them an idea of how I would design an advertisement.
Pendant (Promotional item)
This image shows a graph of the results conducted by a survey. The survey demonstrates the percentage of women who are endorsed with any kind of advertisement, and which is most popular. The results vary between magazine (the most popular) newspapers, on the road, TV, Smartphone app; outdoor billboard sign, online banner, social media site, and an online pop up. - 59 -
MARKETING – Pendant+ QR code For the project I am making, I decided to not only create a magazine, but also include a form of promotion and advertisement for the magazine. For the promotional idea, I did some secondary research to find out what kinds of products are given as magazine promotions. Looking at the magazines in store, it was clear that a lot of giveaways included tote bags, lip gloss, nail polish or jewellery. This pendant can then be given away free with every purchase of the magazine. The packaging isn’t a major concern for this pendant because I will just attach it to the magazine and have the whole package in a plastic sleeve. Any other packaging that wasn’t transparent would be in affective because the consumer won’t be able to see the cover of the magazine. Finally, I decided the pendant was a good idea; I then had to decide what kind of pendant I wanted to make. Immediately the thought of a dog tag appealed to me because it’s simple yet effective. This pendant could also be in the form of a charm. Furthermore it can be accompanied by another charm; the QR code - used to access the online magazine. Effectively a customer would receive a new charm (QR code with every purchase of the magazine). This is the design pitch and point of sale initiative I will propose when applying for Billy Blue. Ultimately I will need to use a machine in order to engrave my image and brand name into the dog tag. The colour of the dog tag was either going to be between silver and gold, I wasn’t going to consider any other colours, simply because they would be less admirable, because other colours won’t match with everything people wear.. Finally I chose to make the dog tag silver instead of gold because silver is a more neutral colour compared to gold and it complements the initial theme of grey throughout both my portfolio and magazine. Rhino I used Rhino (4.0), a design program to 3D model my two charms. These designs would then go on to be printed using a 3D printing machine and be cast in to silver from wax. I used rhino because it is a highly professional program used by many designers to create things such as jewellery and footwear. Now that I have some experience with the program I can continue to expand my knowledge and hopefully use it in the future. Palloys Palloys is the casting company I used to cast my pendants from wax into silver. They specialise in all sorts of casting from CAD and CAM. Palloys is the largest precious metal services group in Australasia and has served the jewellery, arts & antiques industries since 1951, so I thought it would be fitting to use their services for the production of my silver pendants.

Bus shelter advertisement: When I was generating ideas for an advertisement for my magazine, I brainstormed through all the different types and forms of advertising. However what I realised was that not all forms of advertising would be appropriate or effective for my particular product. For instance you wouldn’t advertise a magazine on a TV commercial, unless you were selling the audience a subscription to the magazine. Similarly you wouldn’t advertise a magazine with a brochure or pamphlet. I did think about posters, however no one really reads posters, especially if they’re small (A4). They also get taken down, blown away or vandalised. Another advertisement I considered was web advertising. However, I wanted to produce a physical product of advertisement, considering I will be producing my whole magazine through desktop publishing. This is when the idea of a bus shelter advertisement occurred to me. I chose to stick with this idea because in reality there are bus shelters almost everywhere you go. Furthermore, a lot of young people catch public transport and busses, especially in the city. Because of this, a bus shelter advertisement would be effective to get the attention of my target audience. I chose to create my bus shelter advertisement using Perspex and LED lights. The reason for this decision was to attempt to enhance my advertisement and make it more intriguing than any other boring ad, one sees in their day to day lives. Perspex has always been an interesting material to me. I love the fact that it is transparent and allows you to see through it. For instance if you painted a picture on one side and looked through it, you would see a reflection come through the other side. It creates a type of illusion that captivates the audience and makes it appealing to the viewer. I have previously used Perspex in a school art assignment. I found it easy and simple to use. Ever since then I have had a strong fascination for it.

I had come to the conclusion that a bus shelter advertisement would be fitting to advertise my magazine, however seeing as I couldn’t physically produce one to scale, I created a working prototype of the advertisement in the form of an edge lit sign. Through doing this college administrators looking at my work can appreciate the concept of my transparent advertisement and see how it works in accordance with an LED light box.
Trans Electrical In order to certify my electrical fixture and ensure that it is perfectly functional and safe to use I had to use the help of an electrician. My dad happens to be an electrician, with a company called “Trans Electrical. He tagged the LED light and power point to certify its safety.
Industry advice interview: For this section I chose to interview my cousin Leisa Maait (creative arts director) because she is in the magazine industry and knows a lot about graphic design, desktop publishing and of course magazine design. Leisa was a very helpful source to the development of my project and portfolio because she told me a lot of information about the industry, and what is involved in creating magazines. Another important piece of information she gave me, was what she did when she left school, and what her portfolio was like when she applied for a private design school, called Shillington. This information was useful in developing both my design need and brief. Leisa included 7 examples of her work in her portfolio. Therefore I thought it would be fitting to do the same. After she graduated for Shillington, the college referred her to Cosmopolitan, where she works now. If I complete this folio and design products to the best of my ability, I can definitely use it for applying into a design school.

2
Brainstorm & mind mapping
Created various mind maps to get all my ideas down and further broaden my ideas. Mind maps are a good way to brainstorm. After creating mind maps I have a better Idea of what I’m looking towards.
3
Rough sketches
Started drawing my initial rough sketches. I had about 5 different ideas that I drew up
4
Magazine cover design
After brainstorming, I chose the design which I believed looked the best and the most aesthetically appealing. I did some rough sketches of the design that I had chosen out of my initial rough sketches. This was helpful because I began to expand on my ideas. As evident in the images on the right, my initial idea went from a plane none detailed designed to an innovative and unique design.

Throughout the folio the Lone Wolf icon has been used to signal to the reader that evaluation processes were occurring. These processes would then help the developing design idea or change the direction that the project was taking. The formative and ongoing evaluation processes can be found in all sections of this document. Throughout the portfolio I successfully kept track of evaluation of new ideas and thoughts on my progress through the use of my consistent thinking icon. This is a really successful way of measuring your ongoing criteria to success, because I was able to look at all of my decisions and modifications made throughout my portfolio, and efficiently piece them together in order to create an overall picture of what I wanted to see in my final product, and the steps I was going to take to complete it. The most important evaluation or decision that was made was when I decided to include a digital copy, as well as a published print, through the technology of a QR code, and embedding it on the magazine & a (free) pendant. This decision was extremely significant because it turned my whole project around and significantly improved it. Compared to what I had started out with, a simple design; the use of new and innovative technology such as the QR code has led to an improved project. Through this evaluation, the requirements of Billy Blue College of design were addressed and satisfied. For instance, because the college requires a submission of a portfolio and 6-10 examples of work, I believe I have satisfied these needs through my innovative project. The digital/published magazine and QR code, jewellery and artistic advertising, all contribute to my collection and body of works. Not to mention my magazine, this demonstrates communication design as well as artistic skill. This decision was made during the “appropriate research and experimentation section of the folio (pg48). If I had not researched and experimented with this technology, my project would not have been as innovative as it is now, the evaluation and decision ultimately changed the outcome of my project. Thus, as a result of this reflection and evaluation I have come to the discovery and establishment of new ideas. Therefore the evaluation process is highly important in the process of design.

As function and aesthetics are major components of any design project, the completed prototype will now be examined to determine the level of success achieved in these aspects.
FUNCTION When I first started my idea generation, I began with a really general idea of a design project (which was initially a magazine). Compared to the final outcome I have now (electronic copy of a magazine, pendant and advertising campaign), a lot of change has occurred. All of this change is positive though, because it has improved the overall look of my final project. The function of my magazine will be to enter into a design school and show people that I have managed to self fund, design and publish a magazine. My initial rough sketches gave me a clear idea on the path of magazine design that I would be following. After establishing my ideas, I narrowed it down to one, based on my peer’s opinions and the one that I thought was the most appealing and would effectively represent me as a designer. The most change throughout this project occurred when I decided to take my magazine to the next level and make it available as an electronic copy. Now that I know how to generate fonts and logos, and create my own brand I can use this technique elsewhere including in my magazine.
Something I need to improve on would definitely be time management for the future. For future references I have to keep in mind, that if I want to produce good quality work I must use my time wisely, and am as organised as possible. If I had to do it all again there wouldn’t be much I would change except for the way in which I managed my time. After all of the work I put into making my product I am proud to say that I am happy with the overall outcome. Ultimately, the underlying purpose of this magazine is to function as an example of my graphic design potential, and application into a design school, to further my studies and gain a degree in graphic design. Through evaluation of the function of this magazine I would say that I have accomplished a very complex task, as magazines are often put together by at least 20 different people who all have different roles. The overall outcomes of my magazine, although it is not to a ‘professional’ standard can be seen as me developing my skills as a designer. I think it functions very well, and I look forward to further expanding it and using it in the future.
- 69 -
AESTHETICS The aesthetics of my project is the second most important design factor after the function of the product. The reason for this is because I believe one of the greatest reasons that consumers are attracted to certain products or brands, is because it appeals to them and stands out form other products or brands. The look, form and ultimate design of a product is very important when it comes to the advertising and selling within a consumer market. For example if I was a customer looking to buy a magazine I would search for one that looks appealing and professional. As well as this I would look for a magazine that has a good reputation and choose the one that stood out. Not to mention the one with the most unique and original design, because this shows the abilities of the designer themselves.
In relation to the design brief, I believe my project fulfils all of the aesthetical aspects of design. My magazine is almost entirely based on aesthetics, communication, representation, layout and understanding; through design. The way in which I present and communicate my articles in my magazine, must all be carefully considered in order for it to be appealing. A reader’s reaction will tell me whether my communication skills were successful or not, in appealing to the audiences and grasping their attention. The aim of my project is to build my skills in communication design. Therefore through doing this, I will further broaden my skills and gain an understanding of what it may be like to work with magazines; which is something I aspire to do in the future. Quirky and unique fonts
Large letter heads to grab attention
Usage of my own photograph, as a means of creativity

THE INDIVIDUAL: When I began brainstorming for ideas, thinking about what kind of product I was going to design and create for my project I took in consideration what I wanted the individual to feel like and the impact my product would have on them Initially my aim was to create a product that would be aesthetically appealing to an individual. I was determined to design an original and unique magazine that dealt with aspects of art, design and fashion, with the inclusion of my own personal artwork in it. In order to find out if my design and concept was successful, I surveyed a number of people who suited my target audience. One survey revealed Her response: initially she felt that it was a slightly different to other designs that already exist, however still maintaining a generic magazine layout with my own twist. She liked the fact that my design included my own art and other really talented artists and photographers. Furthermore the colour scheme and the way all of the colours either work together in harmony or contrast each other effectively. The interviews and articles were relevant and interesting, especially for people her age (18) Steph’s feedback was really helpful because it made me realise that an individual’s opinions are really important when it comes to designing, especially considering they are the niche market in which I would sell my product to.
SOCIETY: In addition to what the individual feels about the product, it is important to acknowledge views society can have. I have undertaken a community survey to determine the level of success achieved for the product to be of use for society. The following is a graph of the results. I surveyed 106 people, and asked them a couple of questions. From the results I have gathered that my product will affect society in a positive way as its purpose is to inform and entertain the reader, giving them insight into the rare and incredible talents of many young people of today. This is something I believe, society needs to be more aware of and learn to appreciate not only academic talents of people but also the creative and unique talents of many. Through my project I hope that society will help support those
Society
who are striving to achieve their dreams and pursue their talents. Overall the contents of my magazine are a positive influence (as evident through the survey- 41 people would purchase) and source of entertainment for society which breaks away from a lot of clichĂŠ and celebrity filled magazines.
Survey on society and their opinion towards my magazine
- 71 -
THE ENVIRONMENT In order to determine the type of environmental harm my product will cause, I have researched the life cycle of products and completed a life cycle analysis of my finished product.
1. Materials 2. Creating product 3. Manufacturing 4. Packaging 5. Distribution to shopping 6. centres and the consumer market 7. Purchased 8. Usage 9. Brake/updated 10. Disposal 11. Recycle 12. Cycle begins over again One of my main concerns and aims was to design a sustainable magazine. Sustainability means producing products without sacrificing the future generation’s needs and natural resources. Sustainability is not merely about saving rainforests or decreasing air pollution, it is about making choices that considers the Environment, social equity, and economics. In the long term, my magazine will not greatly affect the environment. The reasons for this include the fact that it will be published on environmentally friendly paper. As well as this my magazine has a QR code on each issue. This will allow the reader to access the magazine online through any device (Smartphone, tablet, laptop). Ultimately this will decrease the amount of publishing and printing for magazine production. The reader will then have a choice if they want to purchase the magazine, or instead read it online. Thus my magazine will not be harmful to the environment in the long term.
Reflect on life-cycle analysis and critically evaluate the short term impact of the product on the environment. Through a reflection of the life cycle analysis of my product, the short term impact that this magazine can have on the environments resources as well as human manufactures includes the problems that can occur while printing, and publishing the magazine. This can be harmful to the manufacturer as this must be done in a safe and controlled environment to prevent the risk of danger/hazards. For example inks may include solvents. In order for the inks to fully dry, the solvents must evaporate which will produce volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Volatile organic compounds create pollution and contribute to the greenhouse effect. Magazines can also contribute to litter in the streets in the short term. Printed magazines affect the environment with their use of paper and digital magazines affect the environment with their electricity used from servers hosting the digital magazines. With the amount of paper used for magazines, we are decreasing the amount of trees in our environment. Trees are great resources to decrease the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) and therefore, decreasing trees does not help the environment. Because of the rising issues of global warming and climate change, society is now looking towards buying environmentally friendly or “green” products. This in turn reduces the publication of printed magazines.

Key: Criteria 1 = Function Criteria 2 = Aesthetics Criteria 3 = Environment Criteria 4 = Personal Interests Criteria 5 = successful product Criteria 6 = use of skills Based on the criteria to evaluate success established earlier in this portfolio, and components of the management phase initially created, this evaluation is a personal reflection from the information gathered in surveys and/or reports from industry professionals, used to determine if what was stated in the original brief has been achieved in the final prototype. This tests if constraints and issues mentioned in the Areas of Investigation have been satisfied
Overall I can say I used my skills to the best of my ability and discovered how to use different technologies and techniques through the use of some experimentation (rhino- enamel). I used my artistic skills, design skills and computer skills to finish with a successful, complete product; that fulfils the design brief/need and is aesthetically appealing in all areas.
Criteria 6 Yes/no
Criteria 1 Yes/no
Criteria 2 Yes/no ‘Yes’ = +1
Criteria 5
‘No’= -1
Yes/no Total= 4/6 Overall I think I ended up with a successful product because a lot of research, idea generation and thought went into the creation of my designs. I created everything to the best of my abilities and showed who I am as a designer. I hope that my products will appear appealing and intriguing to the intended user (Billy Blue)
Criteria 4
Criteria 3
Yes/no Yes/no In my final product I included everything I’m interested in. i.e. Fashion, animals, graphics design and art! This is the very reason that made this project worthwhile
My magazine and marketing projects successfully fulfil the design need, and can now serve to be examples of work, to submit for Billy Blue
I am really happy with the
overall look of all aspects of my magazine. The one thing I was a bit disappointed with however was the quality of some pictures and the overall editing. Other than this, in my opinion, my magazine is aesthetically appealing and will hopefully appeal to the niche market and design college administrators
I decided to rate this ‘no’, for the criteria of environment merely because, If my magazine was to be mass published, then it would use a lot of paper and ink for printing. However to minimise this impact I have decided to use recyclable, environmentally friendly paper and also provide the magazine online as an e-book. In doing this a number of readers will resort to reading it online, therefore there won’t be as much print and publishing demand - 73 -
